America’s political campaigns in 2012 set an all-time high of $7-billion in general spending; it is expected that 2016 will reach a number far greater than the last Presidential election cycle. So what does this mean to Joe and Jane Public, and why should we as Americans care how much is spent electing the “best” candidate to represent our interests? American society is governed by elected officials voted into office by a majority of the voting public. However, special interests and Political Action Committees invest significantly ensuring their candidate succeeds in a public image campaign of convincing the public on whom to elect. So why do you need to know your elected officials? Well, it is important to understand who supports their interests, funds their campaigns and how they vote to benefit the voters, not the donors. In California, according to, a website that Reveals Money’s Influence on Politics, over 500 special interest’s groups donated $56.2 million during the 2011-2012 election cycle – Which accounts for nearly 4,000 thousand special interest bill positions from 2013 to 2016. Lobbyist groups promote the self-interests of their employers, the very same donors engaging with your elected representatives to pass laws and regulations beneficial to their corporate interests. To be fair, there are California officials at local, county, state and federal levels, not persuaded by the power of the purse, and they fight for Joe and Jane Public’s particular interest; though they raise funds for a campaign, they place voters first! GET OUT AND VOTE! Learn about your local, state and federal representatives, don’t buy into the glossy mailers or highly produced television ads, these visual materials are scripted and vetted through focus groups to determine the most impact in convincing voters to vote a specific way. Become your own advocate, seek out information on your candidates, attend public events to meet them in person, and talk to your neighbors about their thoughts – this makes you an informed voter and a dominant force in the electoral process. The 2016 election season is a vital point in American history, as the potential exists for two or more Supreme Court appointments, restoration of a flailing economy requiring entitlement and social program reforms, addressing regulations stifling business development and growth -- these topics only scratch the surface of what is at stake in 2016. It is vital that the general public is no longer an uninformed voter, IECommerce magazine, its staff and contributors are dedicated to ensuring Californian’s are well-informed and prepared to elect the most qualified representatives. 8

Dr. Raul Ruiz (D-i)

U.S. Representative Raul Ruiz, M.D., grew up in the community of Coachella, California, where both of his parents were farmworkers. Dr. Ruiz achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a physician through public education. After graduating from Coachella Valley High School, Dr. Ruiz graduated magna cum laude from UCLA. He went on to Harvard University, where he earned his Medical Degree, as well as a Masters of Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government and a Masters of Public Health from the School of Public Health, becoming the first Latino to earn three graduate degrees from Harvard University. He completed his Residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and a Fellowship in International Emergency Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The program became part of the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, where Dr. Ruiz served as a Senior Associate Dean. Through the group Volunteers in Medicine, he helped to open a free clinic to help underserved communities in the Coachella Valley. In 2010, Dr. Ruiz started the Coachella Valley Healthcare Initiative, which brought together stakeholders from across the region to address the local healthcare crisis. He has also worked internationally in the medical community. In 2010, Dr. Ruiz flew to Haiti immediately following the 2010 earthquake and served as the Medical Director for the J/P Haitian Relief Organization. The U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne awarded him the Commanders Award for Public Service for his work. Dr. Ruiz continued his work as an Emergency Room Doctor until he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012. He represents California’s 36th District, which includes the entire Coachella Valley, as well as the cities of Banning, Beaumont, Blythe, Hemet and San Jacinto. He resides in Palm Desert, CA.

Candidate Jeff Stone (R) Jeff Stone has lived in Southern California his entire life. He moved to Riverside County because of the quality of life it offered. Jeff knew this was one of the best places to open a business and raise a family. In 1983 Stone opened a local pharmacy and began building his strong ties and local involvement within the community. In 1992 Jeff began expanding his public service involvement when he ran and was elected to the City Council for three terms. Stone served as Mayor until being elected to the Board of Supervisors. He successfully defeated an incumbent Supervisor in 2004 and was reelected to the Board in 2008 and 2012.Jeff believes in a fiscally responsible and more efficient government that is less intrusive and more productive for its citizens. He is a strong advocate for policies that foster economic growth and job expansion and a champion for taxpayers. Jeff makes public safety a top priority. Stone created the county’s first juvenile sexual predator interdiction program and passed a county resolution making it easier for law abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms for personal protection. In addition to his public service, Jeff continues to own and operate his local business, Innovative Compounding Pharmacy. Jeff is a graduate of USC, where he earned a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.




Mark Takano (D-i)

Mark Takano worked to improve the lives of young people as a teacher at Rialto High School. Born and raised in Riverside, Mark's commitment to public service began at an early age. His family roots in Riverside go back to his grandparents who, along with his parents, were removed from their respective homes and sent to Japanese American Internment camps during World War II. After the war, these two families settled in Riverside County to rebuild their lives. Mark attended La Sierra High School in the Alvord Unified School District, where he played football and wrestled at the junior varsity level. In 1979, he graduated as the school's valedictorian. Mark attended Harvard College and received his bachelor's degree in Government in 1983. As a student, he bused tables to help make ends meet. In 1990, Mark was elected to the Riverside Community College District's Board of Trustees, finishing first among eleven candidates competing for two seats. At RCC, Mark has worked with Republicans and Democrats to improve higher education for young people and job training opportunities for adults seeking to learn a new skill or start a new career.Today, Mark Takano represents Riverside, Moreno Valley, Perris and Jurupa Valley in the United States Congress. As the Congressman from District 41, Mark works with members of both parties to advance local priorities: creating good-paying jobs, keeping local families in their homes, improving public education, cutting taxes for small businesses and hardworking Americans, and honoring the service of our veterans. He continues to fight to protect Medicare and Social Security, strengthen America’s middle class, and honor the service of our veterans. In Congress, Mark is a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee and the Education and Workforce Committee.

Candidate Doug Shepherd (R) Doug Shepherd has been a small business owner for over thirty years. He and his wife have owned and operated several businesses over the years. Currently, they are the owners of Shepherd Realty Group and Outlook Escrow Inc. located in Riverside, California. As a family and as business partners, the Shepherds work together to support their customers and their community. Doug and Shelley Nuhn married in 1984 and they raised their family in Riverside County. They have two adult daughters. The eldest daughter is married and has one child with a second on the way. Doug and Shelley boast most about their happiness of being grandparents. They share the love of family with their extended family of customers and employees, who have become lifelong friends.Doug is a 32-year veteran of the real estate sales industry. After moving to the Inland Empire in the 1987, Doug became managing partner of the Veteran Housing Center in Riverside and went on to obtain his broker license in 1991. As a Realtor, Doug has helped thousands of individuals and families realize one of America’s dreams, owning a home of their own. Throughout Doug’s career, he has hired and employed hundreds of folks that have become part of the Shepherd family. Through hard times and good times, Doug has put his team members and their families first. Doug has been a longtime advocate of mentoring employees, many of whom have moved on to become business owners and successful realtors.



U.S. CONGRESS DISTRICT 42ND CANDIDATES Ken Calvert (R-i) Ken Calvert, a lifelong resident of Riverside County and 17-year small business owner, currently represents the 42nd Congressional District of southern California. Calvert attended neighborhood public schools, graduating from Corona High School in 1971. He attended Chaffey College in Alta Loma for two years and then enrolled at San Diego State University, where he graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. Rep. Calvert’s legislative work has received top ratings from the Americans for Tax Reform, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Christian Coalition, League of Private Property Voters, National Federation of Independent Businesses, 60 Plus Association, Small Business Survival Committee and Citizens for a Sound Economy. The 42nd Congressional District encompasses western Riverside County, including the cities of Eastvale, Norco, Corona, Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Canyon Lake, Menifee, Murrieta and a portion of Temecula. The district also includes the unincorporated areas of El Sobrante, Woodcrest, Temescal Valley, Lakeview, Nuevo, Homeland, Winchester, and Aguanga. Rep. Calvert was the author of legislation that created the E-Verify system, which is used to verify to legal status of newly hired employees. While the free, Internet-based system is currently used on a voluntary basis by businesses around the nation, Rep. Calvert has sponsored legislation that would make the use of E-Verify mandatory for every business. In the House of Representatives, Rep. Calvert’s priorities have been: supporting the military in our national defense; improving our local and national economies; strengthening our borders and reforming the immigration system; creating long-term solutions to California’s energy and water problems; working towards the implementation and funding of new transportation corridors vital to Riverside County’s future; and much more.

Candidate Tim Sheridan (D) Tim and his wife Debbie live in Lake Elsinore. They have been married for 11 years. Prior to moving to Lake Elsinore, they lived in Menifee. Tim’s stepdaughter Brie lives in Texas with her husband Daniel Ramirez. Tim grew up in a middle-class family in Syracuse, New York. His father, a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, worked for Continental Bakery and drove Wonder Bread and Hostess Cakes trucks. His mom worked various jobs in the local school system and later for United Parcel Service. Tim had two siblings – a sister Tracy, who lives in Central New York with her husband and her daughter, and a brother Thomas who passed away at age 21 in April 1992 of Leukemia. Given his experience with student loans, Tim is committed to ensuring that students get the best possible terms so that they can reasonably afford to attend college without having to worry about being saddled with a massive amount of debt when they finish. He is also committed to lowering the interest rates on current loans, and working toward fairer repayment terms so that students can spend money on things other than student loan repayments when they get out of college. Tim has also served as chief spokesperson in negotiations between those he represents and against the Federal government. He has also represented employees before the Federal Services Impasses Panel (FSIP) on two occasions and has served on three bargaining teams representing his colleagues in term contract negotiations.



U.S. CONGRESS DISTRICT 50TH CANDIDATES RIVERSIDE COUNTY Duncan Hunter (R-i) Duncan D. Hunter currently represents California’s 50th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, consisting mainly of East San Diego County. Duncan is a native of San Diego, graduating from Granite Hills High School in El Cajon before going on to San Diego State University, where he earned a degree in Business Administration. Soon after graduation, Duncan began working full time as a Business Analyst, utilizing his degree and his experience creating websites and programming databases, while a student at San Diego State University. For Duncan, like millions of other Americans, everything changed when the nation was attacked on September 11, 2001. In the weeks that followed, Duncan quit his job and joined the Marine Corps. Between 2002 and 2006, he served two combat tours in Iraq, before making the decision to run for Congress, where he saw an opportunity to continue serving the country. Only a few weeks after declaring his candidacy, Duncan was recalled to active duty and deployed to Afghanistan. Though unable to campaign in any way while serving on the front lines, he carried out his campaign through his wife and family as they reached out to the voters on his behalf, until his return in late November of 2007. In November 2008, Duncan was elected to his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives Duncan and his wife Margaret reside in Alpine, California. They are proud parents of Duncan, Elizabeth and Sarah. Duncan is a strong conservative whose priorities include a strong national defense; enhanced border security, fiscal accountability and transparency, and protecting taxpayer interests. He currently serves as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, as well as a member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and the House Education and the Workforce Committee.

Candidate Patrick Malloy (D) Patrick Malloy was born in 1966 in Norwood, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. He comes from a family of educators; his parents, John and Patricia are retired school teachers. He attended University of Massachusetts and American University in Washington, D.C. studying international business. After college, Patrick went on to be a successful businessman in marketing in San Francisco and New York City. During extensive travel in Australia and South Asia, he met the love of his life, Karuna, a young businesswoman from Bangladesh. They married in 2007 and now live in Escondido. Karuna followed the long path to become a naturalized US citizen They are both so proud of America and its potential. Today, Karuna works in the health care field, and Patrick developed a thriving business as a real estate specialist and realtor in the region. Patrick knows the "lay of the land" as a realtor. His knowledge of the 50th District includes understanding the strengths of each community and their unique needs. He finds daily inspiration working with young families who want to buy homes, find fulfilling work, and create a good life in this part of the world. Malloy sees the arrogance of our incumbent using his campaign funds for personal uses and his mindless promotion of vaping in Congress. Malloy has read the stories of our incumbent acting like a "party animal," as the employees in the Capitol have labeled him. Malloy firmly believes this must end. Democrats, Republicans, and Independents need to rise up together to rid the US Congress of this embarrassment.





T General Roth was elected to the State Senate on November 6, 2012, by a 55-45% vote margin. In his first year in office, he delivered on his campaign pledge to secure full, ongoing funding for the UC Riverside School of Medicine. The Medical School is a critical first step in solving Inland Southern California and the State’s dire primary care physician shortage. To further solve this shortage, Senator Roth has also championed legislation to train tomorrow’s doctors by establishing a public private partnership to fund additional medical residency slots - alleviating California’s doctor shortage by training more physicians in the areas that need them most. Senator Roth is also leading the fight to save Riverside County’s four newest cities, who were hit especially hard when the State suddenly shifted funds they would have otherwise received to public safety realignment. One of those cities, Jurupa Valley, could face disincorporation. Senator Roth delivered critical funding to connect our veterans with real jobs, because everyone who has served our nation should be able to achieve the American Dream they fought to

protect. General Roth is married to his wife Cindy who was born and raised in Riverside. Roth entered active duty in the US Air Force in 1975 and was stationed at Riverside’s 22nd Bomber Wing in 1978. In 1979 Roth transferred from active duty to the Air Force Reserves, serving at Riverside’s March Air Force Base for the next 13 years with Strategic Air Command and Military Airlift Command units. In 1986,















he was named Air Force Judge Advocate of the Year, and in 1992 named California Reservist of the Year.

Richard Reed (R)


Born in Houston, Texas, Richard’s family moved to California in 1958 when his father was stationed at March Air Force Base. Richard graduated magna cum laude from California Baptist College with a bachelor’s degree in English and completed history/theatre arts double minor and secondary teaching credential at University of California, Riverside and taught in the Riverside Unified School District for about twelve years. Having a strong passion for the performing arts, Richard ran his own acting company for ten years before deciding to pursue a law degree. After receiving a Juris Doctorate from California Southern Law School in 2000 he established his own practice in downtown Riverside for ten years.Richard has stayed involved in the Riverside arts scene by sitting on the board of the Riverside Ballet and the Riverside Dickens Festival. He is a member of the Republican Central Committee. Richard supports smaller government with more local control, lower taxes, fewer regulations and investment in California’s long neglected water infrastructure. Guns: Strict gun control only takes guns away from law-abiding citizens, as criminals will still acquire them through illegal means. The Second Amendment assures every citizen that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. Public pensions: No public employee should have a


better pension than his equal counterpart in the private sector. Eminent Domain: Private property may be taken by the State only for a


proper public use and for just compensation. Richard has invested a great deal of time fighting against improper use of eminent domain.




The son of a town dentist and small business owner, Tom Lackey was raised in the small, high desert mining town of Boron and graduated from Boron High School in 1977. After graduation, Tom served as a missionary for two years, later returning home to attain a bachelor’s in special education and start his career as a special education teacher. To this day, Tom continues to serve those who require special care in the community as a champion for state funding to the developmentally disabled. A proven and gracious leader for the region, Tom Lackey’s career has been underlined by a dedication to service and safety. In 1985, Tom was provided with an opportunity to use his passion for helping people in another way when he was hired as an officer with the California Highway Patrol. For nearly 30 years, Tom helped to keep the region’s streets and neighborhoods safe, working in the areas of Los Angeles, El Cajon, Baldwin Park and the Antelope Valley, and retiring as a Sergeant in 2014. During this time, he also worked as a member of the Antelope Valley Crime Task Force. Those who know Tom will tell you that he has taken the oath to protect and serve to another level, and the number of ways he has helped to both lead for, and strengthen his community, exemplify this deep level of commitment. Before being elected

to the State Assembly, Tom served as a member of the Palmdale Elementary School District Board of Trustees, and was elected to three consecutive terms on the Palmdale City Council.

Steve Fox (D) Steve Fox ran for the Assembly to get things done for our families and us. While serving in the California State Assembly, Fox focused on restoring jobs, invigorating our local economy, expanding educational opportunities and keeping our families safe. For a freshman Assemblyman, he got a lot accomplished to help our community. Assemblymember Steve Fox (Antelope Valley) authored aerospace Bill AB2389 which directly created 1100 aerospace jobs and 4782 jobs in supporting fields. The Antelope Valley has a high school graduation rate that is higher than the statewide average. Yet our students have no opportunity to seek a four-year public college or university locally. Assemblyman Fox worked to authorize the first step; a study on the feasibility of establishing an independent college campus, CSU Antelope Valley. Steve Fox should be allowed to finish this project. We need him to bring us that four-year college right here. There are 900 severely violent sex predators set to be released. Many of them if left unchecked will be sent right here to the Antelope Valley. Assemblyman Fox authored and the Governor signed a Bill which gave our local courts the ability to violate these predators and send them back now. Now Steve wants to sponsor a Bill that will force violent sex predators to live out their lives on hospital grounds, in another district and not in our backyard.

ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 42ND CANDIDATES RIVERSIDE COUNTY Chad Mayes (R-i) Although he held over a decade of local government experience prior to his election to the state Assembly, Chad Mayes knew serving in the state Assembly would require an entirely different set of skills to succeed. For that reason, Chad made a commitment to keep his eyes and ears open and his mouth closed for the first six months of his term. Whether it’s his service at the local, regional, or state level, Chad Mayes is noted for bringing a spirit of responsive, servant leadership to every position he has held. From his tenure as a Yucca Valley Town Councilman and as a board member of the San Bernardino Associated Governments, to leadership on the Statewide Board of Directors for League of California Cities, it’s clear that Chad’s ability to build relationships on both sides of the aisle benefit the communities he serves. A governing conservative, it was Chad’s reputation for building consensus that resulted in his appointment to a number of key legislative committees including serving as Vice Chair of the Assembly Human Services Committee. In addition to his Vice Chairmanship, Mayes was appointed to the Governmental Organization Committee as well as the Insurance committee. Also noteworthy was Chad’s selection to serve on the important Assembly Rules Committee, which serves as the administrative body governing the Assembly, as well to the Special Committee on Legislative Ethics.

Greg Rodriguez (D) Raised in Southern California by a single mother who worked three jobs to support her three children, Greg Rodriguez had the values of personal responsibility and a strong work ethic instilled in him early on. In 1996 Greg left his company and became a stay-at-home parent after adopting his nephew, a threemonth premature baby facing a multitude of developmental challenges at birth and eventually being diagnosed with Autism. Four years later he adopted his second son, who at the age of four had been in five different foster homes. Becoming a father, his passion for education and disability issues grew as Greg experienced first-hand the shortcomings of services available for his two boys. Greg became active in forging solutions for children with developmental disabilities and served on the Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council. After visiting the desert for over thirty years, Greg and his family permanently called the desert home in 2006. Greg immediately became active in the community focusing on education and local community activities. He served as PTA President and Treasurer, School Site Council Chair, Chair of the School District’s Bond Oversight Committee, District parental advisory committees, member and President of the Foundation for the Palm Springs Unified School District, board member of the Desert AIDS Project, and as the First Vice Chair of the Palm Springs Human Rights Commission.





ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 60TH CANDIDATES RIVERSIDE COUNTY Eric Linder (R-i) Eric Linder was elected on November 6, 2012 to represent the 60th District in the California State Assembly, which encompasses the Riverside County cities of Corona, Norco, Riverside, Eastvale and Jurupa Valley. It was his first campaign for elected office. Because of his enthusiastic support of private sector job creators and innovative ideas about the best ways to keep our state economy moving forward, Eric has received a 100% Rating from the California Chamber of Commerce during his first year in the State Assembly. Linder represents a new generation of citizen legislator in Sacramento, blending business experience and public service to lead the fight for leadership on the “quality of life issues” that significantly impact people’s lives. Assemblyman Linder helped push for funding for the new UC Riverside School of Medicine, the state’s first new public medical school in 40 years. This was one of Linder’s top priorities, because it will ensure that the region will have more physicians and better health care access for Inland Empire residents, while simultaneously establishing an economic anchor and stimulating the local economy as much as $150 million every year.

Sabrina Cervantes (D) Sabrina Cervantes is a lifelong Riverside County resident with a proven record of advocating for the issues that matter to working families. As the District Director for State Assemblymember Jose Medina, Sabrina is in the frontlines of the fight to implement progressive policies in the Inland Empire. Working with local stakeholders and community partners, she has fought to expand access to higher education, strengthen our regional economy, improve the delivery of government services to our most vulnerable citizens, and protect the natural beauty of Riverside County. Prior to joining Assemblymember Medina’s office, Sabrina served as a Director for the California Voter Registration Project, where she spearheaded strategic planning for field operations to register new voters and increase civic engagement throughout the state. Sabrina’s commitment to promoting equitable change is shown through her years of partnership with non-profit organizations that promote diversity, equality, and social justice. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the UCR Chicano Latino Alumni Association (CLA) and the non-profit organization, TruEvolution. She is also a member of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), and the PICK Group of Young Professionals.



ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 61ST CANDIDATES RIVERSIDE COUNTY Hector Diaz (R) Restaurant owner, insurance consultant, and real estate agent Hector Diaz has dedicated his life to creating opportunities for others. He is running as the Republican candidate for the 61st State Assembly to offer practical, common sense solutions to the ineffective state government in Sacramento. Hector is not afraid of the Sacramento establishment or the challenges of this race. Like many residents of the 61st AD, Hector came from humble beginnings being raised by both parents who immigrated to California for a better life and opportunity for their children. His father worked two jobs to make ends meet and still able to take the steps necessary to teach their children the values of hard work and education. They emphasized the importance of chasing the American Dream. Hector is the youngest of 11 children and the only one blessed with the privilege to attend school in the US. He has earned two bachelor degrees from California State University of Fullerton, one in Criminal Justice and one in Political Science. He was accepted into the California Highway Patrol explorer program before being medically disqualified for the academy.

Jose Medina (D-i) "For over 30 years, I have served Riverside County families as a classroom teacher, Community College Boardmember, and State Assemblymember. I have dedicated my life to preparing our children to succeed, improving our schools, creating new opportunities for middle-class families, and delivering results for our community. As a classroom teacher and Community College Boardmember, I helped improve academic standards in the classroom, put more students on the path to college or a career, and invested in job-training programs to give more students the opportunity to succeed. I am proud of what we accomplished at the local level. Yet, bad decisions and misplaced priorities in Sacramento were holding back Riverside County families. I ran for State Assembly to change that and bring a new set of priorities to Sacramento. As your State Assemblymember, I helped deliver the first on-time balanced state budget and surplus in over a decade; pay down our state debt and eliminated waste; secure over one billion dollars to improve classroom standards; pass the state water bond to fight the drought; deliver funding to open the Medical School at U-C Riverside; and created new tax credits that promote economic investment, new jobs, and make it easier for small businesses grow. Jorge Lopez (D)

Jorge Lopez emigrated from Mexico when he was 10. He grew up in an All-American community in San Diego, California with his parents, and is the eldest of 3 brothers and 2 sisters. At age 18, Jorge enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps to serve the country that had given him so much. He felt it was his duty, like so many other patriots, to protect his adopted country and all its citizens. Jorge hoped to help liberate the people of Kuwait during the first Persian Gulf war, but the war ended before his orders were given. Instead, Jorge’s first mission was to help evacuate. After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Jorge worked for a family-owned business as a delivery driver. His work ethic, ability to foresee potential issues, and resolve them without supervision resulted in his eventual promotion to General Manager. While working full-time, Jorge also enrolled in college full time, and received his first Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Information Science. During this time, Jorge helped his employer successfully automate most of their business processes and set the standards necessary for accelerated growth.

Melissa Melendez (R-i) A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Melissa proudly entered the United States Navy upon graduating high school. She attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., where she spent a year and a half in a Russian language immersion course, to become fluent in Russian. Her mastery of Russian would come in handy, as she was one of the first women approved by the U.S. Navy to fly aboard EP-3 reconnaissance and intelligence aircraft overseas. She served her country with honor and distinction as a Russian translator for ten years during the height of the Cold War, as well as during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. While serving in the Navy, she received numerous awards for her strategic acumen, operational insight, professionalism and impeccable leadership skills. While serving in the Navy full-time, Melissa also attended college in the evenings, and received her BA in History and Political Studies and later her MBA in June of 2008. After the multiple tours with the Navy, Melissa entered civilian life and started her own successful transcription company, contracting with the Chief of Naval Operations, and providing services to the Secretary of the Navy as well as other high-level Pentagon officials. Melissa has five children with her husband, Nico, who works for the Department of Homeland Security. Nico is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served 10 years on active duty around the world. He proudly continues to serve today in an active naval reserve unit.




In 1979, with just $125, I started my business, Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers. I’ve grown it to six locations, employing hundreds of San Diegans over the last 37 years. I was born in Balboa Navy Hospital and have watched San Diego County change in a lot of ways, some good, some bad. Today, I’m running for State Assembly because I want to fight for common sense in state government. As a small business owner, I know what it takes to grow and create jobs. I understand first-hand how government gets in the way of entrepreneurs who take risks and move our community forward. I have been active in our community, supporting the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, San Diego Police Foundation, animal shelters, food banks, and our deputy sheriffs. These efforts have always been about making East County a better place for our families. I believe in a smaller, less-intrusive government and accountability and transparency in our state agencies. And that those of us who are capable, should help those who are less fortunate. I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, free speech, and freedom of religion, and believe I can be strong voice for our values in Sacramento.

Randy Voepel (R) As Mayor of Santee for the past 15 years, I’ve worked hard to implement a conservative, limited government vision for Santee. I’m happy to say that these efforts have paid off, as Santee has become a model for how conservative principles can be applied at a local level. Now I’m ready to take my experience to Sacramento, which is in desperate need of strong conservative leadership. While serving as Mayor my record of accomplishment includes: Building up large budget reserves to strengthen our fiscal stability. Contracting out recreation programs, public safety, and many other city services to keep staff low and reduce pension liabilities. Dedicating the highest proportion of our budget to public safety. Achieving one of the lowest crime rates in the region. No sales tax increases. Reducing city spending by 16% during the lean years to keep the budget balanced. Implementing pro-business policies that attract the restaurants we want, as well as vibrant new retail, residential, and office development. Establishing a teen center, ball fields, concerts and recreational activities for children, families & seniors. As a result of these policies, Santee now boasts the best business environment, highest citizen-to-employee ratio, and smallest pension liabilities in the region.




Marie Waldron (R-i)

Over the past two decades, Marie Waldron has been deeply involved in North San Diego County. As a local business owner, she understands the economic impacts of burdensome government regulation and spending on taxpayers and small businesses. Elected to the California State Assembly in 2012, Waldron serves as Republican Floor Leader. Prior to her election to the Assembly, Waldron served for 14 years on the Escondido City Council fighting for public safety, fiscal restraint and neighborhood revitalization. Waldron also served as Escondido’s Deputy Mayor, as a board member for the North County Transit District, the city’s representative to the League of California Cities, the Regional Solid Waste Association Board, and Escondido’s Investment subcommittee. Her commitment to her city was recognized by the Escondido Rotary Club when she was presented their Outstanding Community Service Award. Marie and her husband Steve have owned and operated Top End Tees Screen-printing and Apparel in Escondido for over 20 years. Waldron has also been a member of the Escondido Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association and many other groups. She served 4 years as Honorary Chairman of the California Business Advisory Council which advocated on behalf of California’s small businesses to Congress.

Andrew Masiel (D) Andrew Masiel has devoted more than 25 years of his life to serving California tribal governments, accumulating extensive experience in tribal economic development for tribal government projects. Mr. Masiel was first elected to the Pechanga Tribal Council in 1982 and served until 1986. He then served on the council from 1996 – 2000. In February 2009, Mr. Masiel was elected to the Pechanga Tribal Council in a Special Election.



Stanley Sniff, Jr.

Sheriff-Coroner Riverside County, California Stanley Sniff, Jr. has served as the 13th Sheriff of Riverside County since October 2, 2007. He was subsequently re-elected in 2014 to a second full 4 year term. He is the third Sheriff to also serve as Coroner-Public Administrator after that Department was merged in 1999. The Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department was created in 1893 and is the second largest Sheriff ’s Department in California with 4,600 full-time staff and over 1,600 volunteers. He oversees countywide patrol operations, jail operations, court security and coroner investigations. The department has an operating budget of over 640 million dollars for the current fiscal year. Sheriff Sniff has over 38 years of law enforcement experience and is the eldest grandson of one of the pioneering date and citrus families of the Coachella Valley and grew up in the Indio area. His father, the late Stan Sr., served 25 years as a La Quinta City Councilman. He joined the Coachella Police Department in 1975 after graduation from the San Bernardino Sheriff ’s Academy and then transferred to the Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department in 1979, initially assigned to the Indio Station, serving across the Coachella Valley. His initial expertise was in traffic enforcement and accident investigation and he was instrumental in creating the department’s very first specialized traffic safety programs. He has held subsequent assignments in uniformed patrol operations in Riverside, the San Gorgonio Pass area, and Southwest Riverside County. As a Captain he held command assignments of the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside, the Banning Sheriff ’s Station and the Ben Clark Training Center. As a Chief Deputy he held assignments over Training and Personnel, East and West county patrol operations. As an Assistant Sheriff he was assigned oversight of all county court operations, jail operations and patrol operations divisions. A retired colonel in the Army Reserve, Stanley Sniff was commissioned as an Armor officer out of the OCS program in 1973 at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA. He served 30 years in a variety of military staff and command assignments in infantry, armor and cavalry units.































A "YES" vote would be a vote in favor of the state issuing $9 billion in bonds to fund improvement and construction of school facilities for K-12 schools and community colleges. A "NO" vote would be a vote against the state issuing $9 billion in new debt to fund the improvement and construction of education facilities. A "YES" vote supports requiring voter approval to change the dedicated use of certain fees from hospitals used to draw matching federal money and fund Medi-Cal services. The initiative was also designed to require a two-thirds majority vote of the Legislature to end the hospital fee program. A "NO" vote opposes this initiative, allowing the legislature to change, extend, or eliminate the hospital fee program with a majority vote. A "YES" vote will be a vote in favor of requiring voter approval before the state could issue more than $2 billion in public infrastructure bonds that would require an increase in taxes or fees for repayment. A "NO" vote will be a vote against the voter approval requirement and in favor of continuing to allow the state to issue new debt without voter approval. A "yes" vote will be a vote in favor of prohibiting the legislature from passing any bill until it has been in print and published on the Internet for 72 hours prior to the vote. A "YES" vote supports extending the personal income tax increases on incomes over $250,000 approved in 2012 for 12 years in order to fund education and healthcare. A "YES" vote favors increasing the cigarette tax to $2.00 per pack, with equivalent increases on other tobacco products and electronic cigarettes. A "YES" vote supports increasing parole and good behavior opportunities for felons convicted of nonviolent crimes and allowing judges, not prosecutors, to decide whether to try certain juveniles as adults in court. United States Senate Candidates

Kamala Harris (D)

As chief law enforcement officer for the State of California, my office has focused on combating transnational gangs, working with Mexico to prevent gangs from bringing guns and drugs across our border. We have also worked to fight human trafficking, safeguard California’s many environmental protection laws from efforts to weaken them, and improve public safety by reducing recidivism. I’ve fought to reduce elementary school truancy, preserve the state’s natural resources, increase the adoption of technology and data-driven policing by law enforcement, and ensure marriage equality for all Californians. I’ve also worked with the technology industry to improve online privacy and safety, and developed new tools to fight cyber exploitation. The national foreclosure crisis was one of the first things that I had to tackle after my election as Attorney General. Negotiations for a national settlement started shortly after that, and I thought the amount being offered by the banks was too little. California was ground zero in our nation’s foreclosure crisis, and I thought homeowners deserved better. I fought the big banks and secured from them more than $20 billion for struggling California homeowners. As Attorney General, I also created the Division of Recidivism Reduction and Re-entry at the California Department of Justice so that we could improve public safety by focusing on combating recidivism and addressing the root causes of crime, rather than just treating its symptoms. And I created the Bureau of Children’s Justice to institutionalize my longstanding work of protecting our state’s children. From my first job until now, whenever I’ve prosecuted a criminal, protected a child, or stood up for a Californian, my work has been about fighting for the vulnerable and voiceless, and making our state a safe, equitable place for all families to live and thrive.

Lorretta Sanchez (D) Take the time to read my story and join our campaign. Paul Cook (R-i)

With America's economy in turmoil and thousands of veterans returning from wars abroad, we deserve a Congressman with the experience to get the job done in Washington. Retired Marine Corps Colonel Paul Cook's service and sacrifice to America make him uniquely qualified to serve as our next Congressman.An infantry officer who served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps and a veteran of the Vietnam War, Paul's military career spanned twenty-six years. His actions in combat earned him a number of honors, including two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device. Paul retired from the Marine Corps as a colonel.Retired from active military duty, Paul continued his service by seeking and winning a seat on the Yucca Valley Town Council, ultimately serving as Mayor. Paul became known for his commitment to conservative fiscal policies that protected working families from higher taxes. In 2006, Paul's neighbors elected him to represent them in the California State Assembly. Since then, Paul has distinguished himself by tackling some of the most important issues of the day, like fighting government corruption, reducing taxes, and increasing penalties on sex offenders who prey on children. As Chair of the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee, he has been a tireless advocate for veterans and military families. Holding a lifelong commitment to education, Paul has taught history and political science at Copper Mountain College, California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB), and University of California, Riverside (UCR). Paul holds a master's in political science from UCR and a master's in public administration from CSUSB. Paul has held leadership posts with his local United Way and Red Cross chapters and served as past Executive Director of the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Candidate Rita Ramirez (D) I, Dr. Rita Ramirez, support home, family, and country. For family, I want to create job opportunities by reforming Wall Street and balancing the federal budget. By reforming Wall Street, Wall Street and big banking will be regulated, so that the powerful will not be able to gamble with the economy as in 2008. Hard-working Americans need to receive a cost of living wage, rather than a minimum wage. Every family should have expanded healthcare coverage and extended marriage equality. For the home, I want to improve public education and college opportunities. For the elderly, I support protecting Social Security and Medicare and defending a woman’s right to choose. For our country and veterans, Americans will not be put in harm’s way, except in a direct attack, for I believe in peace with a wellprepared and well-paid military ready to defend our democracy. Above all, I will protect and defend the right to vote. Furthermore, I will protect the environment from “fracking” and the Keystone Pipeline, for water is life and food is survival.



U.S. CONGRESS DISTRICT 27TH CANDIDATES SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY Judy Chu (D-i) Judy Chu was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in July 2009. She represents the 27th Congressional District, which includes Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley of southern California. Rep. Chu currently serves on the House Judiciary Committee, where she is a member of the Subcommittees on Intellectual Property and the Internet as well as Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations. She also serves on the House Small Business Committee, which has oversight of the Small Business Administration. Rep. Chu is the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access. She is also a member of the Subcommittees on Contracting and Workforce as well as the Subcommittee on Health and Technology. In 2011, Chu was elected Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, which advocates for the needs and concerns of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community across the nation. Chu founded and co-chairs the Congressional Creative Rights Caucus, which advocates for the copyright protections of those in the creative industries, such as music, film and visual arts. She also serves in leadership of the House Democratic Caucus as a Member of the Steering and Policy Committee. Chu was first elected to the Board of Education for Garvey School District in 1985. From there, she was elected to the Monterey Park City Council, where she served as Mayor three times. She then was elected to the State Assembly and then California’s elected tax board, known as the State Board of Equalization. In 2009, she became the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress in history.

Jack Orswell (R) Jack Orswell, 66, was born and raised in Pasadena, California. He attended Pasadena High School and Pasadena City College and in 1971 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California. Upon graduation, he worked for a local Certified Public Accounting firm in Pasadena. In April 1973, Mr. Orswell received an appointment as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. For 15 years, he served in the Denver, San Francisco and Los Angeles offices, working white collar crime cases such as political corruption, government fraud and labor racketeering. Mr. Orswell received specialized training from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and he was one of the first FBI Agents to work with the EPA in investigating federal environmental crimes. One of the highlights of his career was helping coordinate security of the judo venue at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. His company employs 10 people and conducts environmental assessments for financial institutions, real estate companies and law firms. Mr. Orswell is also a licensed Private Investigator with the State of California and conducts environmental investigations throughout the United States. In 2009, Mr. Orswell returned to college and earned his Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership from Woodbury University. Mr. Orswell and his wife, Janet, have been married for over 45 years, and they have lived in Arcadia for the past 30 years. They have three adult children and five grandchildren.






Pete Aguilar (D-i)

Pete Aguilar is a proven leader who has worked across party lines to get results for Inland Empire families. San Bernardino County is still struggling to bounce back from the recession. That’s why Pete has focused on finding ways to jump-start our economy and put people back to work. Pete Aguilar grew up in a working-class family in San Bernardino. His dad was a union worker for a local utility company and his first job was working with his grandfather bussing tables at the San Bernardino County Courthouse. He worked two jobs in college, and with the help of Pell Grants, he was able to get a college education. In Congress, Pete has fought every day to create jobs, stand up for students, seniors, and veterans, and make sure our economy works for the middle class. Pete has worked across party lines to bring people together and delivered results that support Inland Empire families. He’s helped secure federal funds to invest in our infrastructure, and he has introduced legislation that would provide opportunities for job training and incentives for small businesses to grow and hire locally. He worked to address high unemployment among our veterans by helping those who served in the military translate their skills to fit job opportunities here at home. These are the types of commonsense solutions we need more of from our leaders. Pete will continue to fight to make college more affordable and accessible, to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare, and to reduce air pollution and improve our environment. Pete believes we can accomplish more by working together, and that’s the type of fresh approach to public service Pete has brought to Congress and will continue to do so as San Bernardino County’s representative.

Candidate Paul Chabot (R) Paul Chabot, age 42, is the President of Chabot Strategies, L.L.C. and Chabot Securities International. He is also an Adjunct Professor teaching American Government at California Baptist University, and in June of 2016 he learned the Navy selected him for promotion to Commander. Paul has strong military credentials. He is an Iraq War veteran who began his reserve military intelligence career in 2001, serving first at the Office of Naval Intelligence. Later, he worked with the Defense Intelligence Agency, in conjunction with an assignment in the Pentagon working for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the National Military Command Center, where he identified and assessed immediate national security threats. Paul has over 21-years of law enforcement experience. He served as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department with specialized assignments to the narcotics and street gangs division. Paul also served full-time with the University of Southern California Public Safety Department where he received the department's meritorious service medal. Paul holds a B.A. in Administration from California State University at San Bernardino, a M.A. in Public Administration from the University of Southern California (USC), and a doctorate (Ed. D) in Executive Leadership from George Washington University. U.S. CONGRESS DISTRICT 35TH CANDIDATES SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY Norma J. Torres (D-i) Congresswoman Norma J. Torres represents California's 35th congressional district which includes Bloomington, Chino, Fontana, Montclair, Ontario, Pomona, and Rialto. She previously served as a State Senator, Assembly Member, and as a Mayor and Council Member in the City of Pomona. Throughout her career in elected office, Norma Torres has worked to make government more responsive to the needs of Inland Empire residents. As a State Senator, Torres played a significant role in making the Affordable Care Act work for California’s patients and consumers. She led efforts to increase access to care and improve the quality of care in underserved areas. Her law to diversify Covered California so that it is better prepared to enroll the uninsured earned her statewide recognition and national attention. A proud supporter of the US military, her third son, Christopher, is a veteran of the United States Air Force. Torres received her bachelor’s degree in Labor Studies from the National Labor College in Silver Springs, Maryland.

Candidate Tyler Fischella (R) I am running for a position in the U.S. House of Representatives because I believe We the People can still fix this great country. Scott Wilk (R-i) Assemblyman Scott Wilk is the only candidate born and raised in the 21st Senate District. Scott Wilk was born at Antelope Valley Hospital. Likewise, Scott co-authored AB 2389 – a $420 million tax incentive that helped land a $60 billion aerospace contract expected to create 6,500 new jobs in the High Desert.

Scott Markovich (D)

As your representative, Scott Markovich sees it as his duty to take his constituents’ best interests and reach across the aisle in order to help his district. Jay Obernolte (R-i) Jay has over 25 years of private sector experience as one of the nation’s leading high-tech innovators and has served as a public servant for nearly a decade. His unique background led to his selection as the Assistant Republican Leader of Innovation and the New Economy. In this capacity, Jay serves as the leading voice of the Assembly Republican Caucus on policy goals that encourage growth and opportunity within California’s vibrant innovation economy. Jay earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and Applied Science at Caltech where he also founded his business out of his dorm room. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence at UCLA. Regionally, Jay has served as a Director on the Mojave Desert and Mountain Integrated Waste JPA Board, the Mountain Area Regional Transit Authority Board, and on the League of California Cities Desert-Mountain Division. In November 2014, Jay was elected to represent the 33rd Assembly District. In addition to Jay’s dedication to public service, he has a number of other interests including martial arts and aviation. Abigail Medina (D)

Abigail Medina the oldest daughter of working-class immigrants, was born in Torrance, California. The hard work of her parents exposed her to new opportunities and a chance of the American Dream. A mother, Abigail moved with her husband to San Bernardino to raise her family. Abigail has been an effective parent leader, advocate and a strong voice in education. Abigail worked as the Senior Parent Organizer for Congregation Organized for Prophetic Engagement (COPE) where she spent her time and effort addressing the issues of working class families. Abigail is also the founder of a not-for-profit organization, Talented and Gifted in the Inland Empire (TaGIE). She is a parent representative to the California Association for the Gifted and previously served as the vice president of the District English Learners’ Advisory Council; the parliamentarian of the District African American Advisory Council, a member of the District Advisory Council, the district strategic-planning team, the Community Budget Advisory Committee, and a number of school-level organizations. She also served 2 years as an Odyssey of the Mind coach at Richardson Prep-Hi Middle School.

Marc Steinorth (R-i) Marc Steinorth was elected to the California State Legislature in 2014 to represent the 40th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, Highland, Loma Linda, and Redlands. Prior to his service in the Assembly, Marc served on the City Council for the City of Rancho Cucamonga. Chris Holden is a public servant, small business owner and lifelong resident of Pasadena. He has dedicated his career to finding solutions that create and protect jobs, preserve vital services and strengthen the economic vitality of the San Gabriel Valley. Serving the Foothill Communities in the State Assembly In 2012, Chris was elected to serve the Foothill Communities in the State Assembly. He has authored and led the passage of several bills, including legislation to make the state’s small business loan guarantee program more accessible, and expanding innovation hubs throughout the state to spur business start-ups focused on emerging technologies. Chris was a strong proponent of Middle Class Scholarships legislation that will reduce fees at UCs and CSUs by up to 40 percent for middle-class families. Casey C Higgins (R) Hello, my name is Casey Higgins. I have spent my entire life in the 41st State Assembly District. I know it to be a place where people take pride in living in small communities. I live in San Dimas with my wife, Estrella, and our children. My wife and I chose to remain here because we wanted to grow our family in a small and safe community. My father, as son of an Irish migrant, learned to work hard on the farm and developed a passion for seeking justice. He instilled those lessons in my seven siblings and I. John McMahon Sheriff John McMahon is a resident of the High Desert with over 30 years of law enforcement experience. He has been married to his wife Shelly for 25 years and has two daughters, Abby and Allie. He began his career with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department as a patrol deputy at the Needles Police/Sheriff’s Station, after which he was assigned to the Victorville and Hesperia Patrol Stations. Once promoted to sergeant, he worked supervisory positions at the West Valley Detention Center and Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center jail facilities, as well as the Victorville City Station and Employee Resources. At the rank of lieutenant, John was second in command of the Sheriff’s Academy and the Fontana Station. As Captain, he was commander of the Central Detention Center, the Apple Valley Station, and West Valley Detention Center. As deputy chief, John oversaw the Detentions and Corrections Bureau, followed by an assignment to manage the Desert Patrol Bureau. John was then promoted to assistant sheriff, overseeing Operations. On December 31, 2012, John McMahon was appointed to Sheriff by the Board of Supervisors to fulfill the unexpired term of Sheriff. On Friday, June 21, 2013, John formally announced his candidacy for Sheriff and on June 3, 2014, he won in the primary election. John is committed to maintaining the department on its current path of providing only the best public safety service to the citizens of San Bernardino County. John possesses an Associate of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Victor Valley College, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Management from Union Institute & University. He is certified as a Jail Manager through the American Jail Association, and is a graduate of the Los Angeles Police West Point Leadership Program. John was also inducted into the Victor Valley College Alumni Hall of Fame in 2007. The Sheriff’s Department continues to be challenged by an economy that necessitates certain budget restraints. Eloise Gomez Reyes (D) Eloise Reyes grew up near the train tracks in south Colton. Although her family had modest means they had great aspirations for their children. They knew it would take hard work and a great education to live a better life. So she could pay for school, Eloise worked in the onion and grape fields. After high school, Eloise worked up to three jobs to put herself through San Bernardino Valley College and the University of Southern California. Then she earned her law degree from Loyola Law School. Eloise is a pioneer. She was the first Latina to open her own law firm in the Inland Empire. She opened her law offices first in San Bernardino and then in the heart of Colton where she grew up. That made it easier for working families to have access to quality legal services. In 2013, Eloise assisted and represented local residents to help stop a planned toxic waste dump in their Colton neighborhood. Eloise's legal career has been marked by awards from everyone from the California Bar to the League of Women Voters.

Paul Avila (D) I was born and raised on a California farm, by hardworking father and mother. My father was born during the peak period of the great depression. He was forced to leave elementary school to help the family with basic food and shelter needs. In my early years, as a youth, I had innumerous times observed my father wake to the crack of dawn to work body and soul into the late darkness of night, continuously, without a dayoff, at times, too tired to finish his meager meal. En los últimos doscientos y más años una nueva Verdad empezó a desarrollarse y reemplazar creencias anteriores. Esa verdad es, que la Humanidad es Supremo sobre las instituciones y no las instituciones sobre la humanidad. En otras palabras, la humanidad tiene imperio natural sobre todas las instituciones. las instituciones son para ellos, según su avance y desarrollo, y no él para ellos. Las instituciones, o los hombres que gobiernan, solo gobiernan por el consentimiento de los gobernados. Obviamente, hoy es fácil decir tales declaraciones, pero la historia nos demuestra que no siempre fue así. solo después de miles de años de desarrollo humano, de guerras, de dictaduras, y los “derechos divinos” de muchos gobernantes, o impuestos por la iglesia, fue que el hombre decidió y declaró merecerse libre y de darle a su patria ó su país su libertad, con el compromiso de mantenerla siempre libre. Los grandes pensadores, padres fundadores y cofrades de los movimientos de libertad, comprendieron esa verdad, y más importante, reconocían su propia responsabilidad para engrandecer tales derechos y el compromiso con los deberes anexos a tales derechos.
