Council celebrates 50 years this July In 2021, Alice Springs Town Council will mark 50 years of serving the Red Centre and we want you to help us celebrate!

Alice Springs Town Council’s first election was held on 25 June 1971, with the town officially becoming a municipality on 1 July 1971.

Some of this town’s most notable names were part of the first Council with Marlene Brown, Brian Martin, Paul Everingham, Len Kittle, Dave Baldock, Andrew McPhee, Peter Leunig and Allan Dunstan all elected as Aldermen with Jock Nelson voted as our first Mayor.

This revolutionary group held their first meeting on 5 July 1971 and now, 50 years later, it’s time to celebrate.

The day will begin with a special citizenship ceremony at 8am where we will welcome some of Australia’s newest citizens with a free community BBQ to follow from 11am-1pm.

You’ll be able to take a trip down memory lane with displays featuring the history of Alice Springs Town Council.

Council are also marking the occasion with a new anniversary logo (pictured).

So make sure you come on down to the Council lawns on Thursday July 1 to join in the festivities and help us celebrate!

Elections for the 14th Alice Springs Town Council are just around the corner and it’s time to consider putting your hand up and nominating to run for Council.

Alice Springs residents will head to the polls on Saturday, 28 August to elect nine Councillors, including a Mayor, but have you considered putting your name on the ballot?

Councillors serve by listening, working together and making decisions on behalf of the community and our Council in Alice Springs represents one of the most diverse communities in the country.

Becoming a Councillor is your opportunity to influence the direction of services, programs, infrastructure and policies that

You certainly do not need any local government experience to put your hand up for election, nor do you have to be a born and bred Territorian but you do need to be an Australian Citizen and resident of Alice Springs.

While it can be a challenging position, the role of Councillor

also offers opportunities for personal growth.

Councillors commit an average of 20 hours per month to the role but receive ongoing training and constant development opportunities.

If you care deeply about Mparntwe-Alice Springs and can spare some time over a four-year term, put your heart where your home is and consider nominating now.

National Reconciliation Week has begun and provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the ways in which our community have and continue to work together as Australians from many different backgrounds to make our community the wonderful place it is. We are all very lucky to live on beautiful Arrernte country and, as I was taught growing up as a Warlpiri person with family connections to this land, no matter what your background is if you too were born here, you too belong here, and you too carry Jukurrpa (Dreaming) within you!

We’re hard at work for our municipality. The draft Municipal Plan and budget is out for consultation and I encourage everyone to have

their say. Feedback from our community ensures that we as Council are lead by our community in the work we carry out for our community.

Pre-game preparations are well under way for the up and coming AFL match between Melbourne and Brisbane at TIO Traeger Park on Friday 4 June. Council Officers have been working hard to ensure the facility and our town of Alice Springs shines under the spotlight. Council is proud to play a role in bringing events like this to town.

We as a Council pride ourselves on providing high quality events and programs for the town such as May’s Big Day Out in Harmony, Pets on Parade, plus many more to look forward to in June. Coming up is our biggest night markets of the year in conjunction with the Tatts Finke Desert Race, as well as Phoney Film Festival Workshops and Our Life in the Centre pop up gallery is running until 17 June.

We’re all looking forward to Council’s 50th Anniversary and will mark the occasion with a free community BBQ on the Council lawns on 1 July so mark your calendar and join us to celebrate 50 years of Alice Springs Town Council!

In an exciting first for both the Central Australian Football League and the Alice Springs Netball Association, the inaugural Mayor’s Cup has been presented in both competitions.

Vision of TIO Traeger Park will be beamed into living rooms across the country when the home town Melbourne Demons take on Brisbane Lions.

A new addition to the calendar, the Mayor’s Cup will see the grand finalists from the previous season go head to head in the senior netball and football competitions respectively.

The CAFL mayor’s Cup saw Rovers take on Federal on 8 May, the first football fixture under lights at Albrecht Oval with Rovers claiming the silverware 114-101.

With Alice Springs the focus of the sporting world for the night, Council Officers have been busy getting TIO Traeger Park in top shape ready for some of the country’s top footballers to strut their stuff.

Work on the oval began in August 2020 to ensure the turf is of the highest standard possible with an independent auditor recently giving their seal of approval ahead of the big game.

The netball Mayor’s Cup coincided with the competition’s 50th birthday celebrations, seeing Rovers defeat Federal 53-47.

Melbourne Demons will host Brisbane Lions at TIO Traeger Park on Friday 4 June from 7.20pm.

Finke Again

Alice Springs will be showcased on the national stage in June

Finke fever has swept across Alice Springs and with the

famous desert race nearing, and that means it’s almost time for the famed Finke Night Markets & Street Party!

In collaboration with the Tatts Finke Desert Race, the June Night Markets is one of the biggest of the year and one not to be missed.

The night features daredevil stunt riders doing the near impossible, a meet and greet with some of your favourite Finke stars, bikes and cars on show as well as your favourite regular night market vendors.

It is important to note that road closures will be in place during the event with Todd St and Gregory Tce closed between 2.30-9.30pm.

The Finke Street Party & Night Markets will be held on Thursday, 10 June from 5-9pm on Todd St and down the Todd Mall.

Youth Climate Series

Council Connects June 2021

Young residents of Alice Springs will have more opportunities to attend a Planateers Youth Climate Series workshop with another two sessions to be held in June.

On Saturday 5 June, Arid Edge Environmental Services will present a Permaculture & Composting workshop at the Westside Community Garden, at 56 Milner Rd. This session will give participants the skills to create a compost heap in their very own backyard!

The final AEES workshop will be held at the Alice Springs Community Garden, 105 Burke St on Saturday 19 June. It will be based around plants, animals and sustainable irrigation focusing largely on developing practical skills around pruning and sustainable irrigation.

Phoney Film Festival

The closing date for entries into the 2021 Phoney Film Festival is fast approaching, but if you’re stuck on ideas we are here to help.

The Alice Springs Youth Action Group will be hosting another free Phoney Workshop to give you the kickstart you need to take your phoney film to the next level and help you take home your share of the $1,500 prize pool!

So, if you’re between 12-25 years of age come along on Saturday, 12 June from 11am - 3pm at the Council Civic Centre Function Room. Register at YDO@​astc.​nt.​gov.​au or call 8950 0548.

One person’s rubbish is another’s treasure as the old saying goes, and that’s certainly the case at The Rediscovery Centre.

The Rediscovery Centre can be found within the Regional Waste Management Facility, and offers a wonderful array of pre-loved goodies.

Some of these goodies have been fashioned into entries for Council’s Alice Upcycle Art Prize.

The Alice Upcycle Art Prize features recycled & repurposed art made by Central

Australian artists, with $7,000 worth of prizes to be awarded.

Entries for the Prize have closed with the awards night to be held at The Rediscovery Centre on Friday, 18 June.

All entries will be available to view at The Rediscovery Centre in a special exhibition for the public to enjoy from Saturday, 19 June to Saturday, 3 July.

Head down to The Rediscovery Centre this month to find your next upcycle project.

School Holiday Fun

The YTAA are an annual writing competition where entrants write and produce their own book. The Awards aim to inspire children and young people in the NT to explore their ideas and turn them into stories.

Did you know the Alice Springs Public Library has a wide selection of books in languages other than English?

School holidays are almost upon us, and that means it’s almost time to look for ways to fill those class-free days.

That’s right, your Library stocks books in languages from across the globe so you’re sure to find something to tempt the linguist in you!

The Alice Springs Public Library is currently planning for the school holiday period, beginning late in June and will be offering special activities for Alice Springs youth.

The competition is open to all Territorians 18 years and under and entries close on 27 August.

This is the perfect opportunity for a school teacher, aquatic industry worker or community organisation to upskill right here in Alice Springs.

Royal Life Saving NT are offering two courses in June: the Bronze Medallion Trainer on 17 June 2021, and the First Aid Trainer on 18 June 2021.

Cost is $100 per course, plus an annual trainer membership of $50. Participants must hold the award they are training for (Cert 4 preferred).

ASALC Manager Receives 2021 NT Administrator’s Medal Award Congratulations to Petina Franklin for taking home the Northern Territory Administrator’s Medal, awarded for exceptional contribution to Lifesaving, Water Safety and Drowning Prevention in the Northern Territory.

Petina has been an active advocate of drowning prevention for the past 20 years and a Board Member of Royal Life Saving NT for 8 years, ensuring that Central Australia and people in remote locations have a voice and can access services.

NEW K9-Kube

Alice Springs Town Council Rangers now have a safer method of transporting lost animals.

One of the Ranger team’s fleet vehicles has now been fitted with a new K9-Kube, a secure cage that can be lowered to the ground via a hydraulic system.

This allows dogs or other small animals to walk directly into the cage, removing the stress of trying to lift an animal from the ground into a cage while also reducing the risk of injury to the ranger and animal handlers.

When the animal is securely in the cage, the K9-Kube is then lifted back onto the vehicle and securely locked.

“This is a fantastic addition to assist our Ranger Team and it’s something that will reassure pet-owners that duty of care is being taken with their lost pets,” Mayor Damien Ryan said.

“The K9-Kube will help reduce stress for any

missing animals our Ranger team come across and improves safety for both the animal and our team.”

The Alice Springs Town Council Rangers will always endeavour to find the owners of animals captured, however this is not always possible.

All animals captured are taken to the Alice Springs Animal Shelter.

All dogs and cats over the age of six months need to be registered with Council and owners are strongly encouraged to have their pets microchipped.

Having your pet microchipped assists in a speedy return back home.

If you find a lost pet you can take it to the Alice Springs Animal Shelter on Len Kit­tle Dri­ve, next to Blath­er­skite Park.
