Beaters/sticks: Reibestock (a dented friction stick), superball mallet, two wooden sticks, two wooden chopsticks, shaft of stick (to be used with Wooden Edge), two triangle beaters, two medium-hard mallets, brass mallet, Tam-tam beater, Contrabass bow. “Ad hoc” instruments (see Performance Notes): Three empty spray cans (tin, to be rolled off a table), metal chain (to be dropped from a table, long enough to sound for 6-7 seconds), bag of seeds (ca. 1 kg. of grains such as rice or wheat, to be poured into a container [ossia: a large rainstick]), water (ca. 1 lt., to be poured from a bottle into a container already filled mostly with water, large enough to perform a water-gong effect with the Thai Gong at the end of the piece). Score is written in C.

Program Notes In Abbas Kiarostami’s 1990 film Close-up, a real-life event (trials of Hossein Sabzian, who cons a family by introducing himself as the famous filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf) is retold through use of documentary footage from the trial, as well as fictional narrative. In addition to this, Kiarostami’s use of the actual people involved (Sabzian and the members of the family) as actors gives way to a complex narrative situation where real life and fiction become entangled. My piece, borrowing its title from the film, attempts at a similar scenario in which 'fictive' sounds (musical/traditional) and 'documentary' sounds (sounds of the mundane, unintentional, even accidental) are placed in relation to each other; keeping in mind that such a division may itself be purely fictional in a musical context. In placing this dualism within a musical parenthesis, perhaps my intention is also to open to question the conditions and circumstances under which this parenthesis appears.

Performance Notes General Microtones: Quarter Tones (from lower to higher):

For reasons of practicality, only quarter-tone flats and sharps are used. Other accidentals (for smaller inflections like eighth tones [where no partial number or cent deviation is specified], and 5th and 7th partials, ca. 14 and 31 cents lower):

Default playing mode is without vibrato.

– dynamics in quotation marks indicate the force of action in the instances where the sonic outcome does not match the action required.

– single mordent above.

– single mordent below.

– highest and lowest possible notes.

– note held for the duration of the line, with the ticks marking the beats.

Woodwinds

– mixture of tone and breath sound.

– (Flute) breath sound with lips completely covering the embouchure.

– (Flute) occasionally, vowels and consonants are specified to modify the breath sounds.

– (Flute) altering intonation by adjusting the embouchure, ca. quarter-tone higher or lower.

– (Flute) jet whistle.


– (Flute) overtone of the indicated fundamental.

– dense multiphonic built on the indicated fundamental.

son roulé – (Bassoon) a special kind of multiphonic that is obtained by strong lip pressure, and has a prominent beating content.

– (Bass Clarinet) slap tongue.

– (Bass clarinet) open slap: a strong slap articulation with very little or no pitch content, achieved by opening the mouth immediately after the slap tongue.

– (Flute and clarinets) tongue ram.

– (Bassoon) flap: produced by hitting the reed with the tongue, very little pitch content.

– bisbigliando: either with the rhythm written out, or given as a duration in which the bisbigliando is performed as fast as possible.

Brass Brass instruments make frequent use of non-tempered partials of the harmonic series, do not correct the intonation of these pitches. For example:

– indicates the seventh partial of a trumpet low F#, sounding 31 cents lower than the tempered E natural.

– open – (Trumpet & trombone) closed – (Horn) stopped

– quick alternation between closed and open (used with plunger and harmon mutes).

– bisbigliando: trill with the same note.


– shake: lip trill between two adjacent partials of the overtone series.

– breath sound. Only for the trumpet, the pitch is indicated, and sounds approximately a seventh below the written note.

– occasionally, vowels are specified for breath tones in order to modify the breath sound, altering its “shading”.

– strike the mouthpiece with the palm. Only for the trombone the pitch is indicated as well.

Percussion Wooden Edge: A wooden surface, like the edge of a table. Played by scraping a wooden stick along the edge. The frequency content of the sound depends on the contact point of the stick to the edge (higher towards the tip, lower towards the hand). C – center E – edge

– circular motion, with the indicated trajectory (from center to the edge, in this instance).

– dead stroke. “Ad Hoc” instruments: At various points in the piece, the percussionist is asked to drop or pour various materials. While initially the actions are controlled (such as rolling the empty cans, or slowly dropping the chain), the performer should quickly let the sounds take their own course.

Piano Preparation: Following strings are to be completely muted, inserting piano mutes between both sets of strings:

Following strings are to be prepared to sound slightly out of tune, almost creating a ‘chorus effect’, using cigarette filters. Insert one or two cigarette filters in between only one set of strings:

A glass guitar slide is used in various ways:

– strike perpendicularly on the metal frame inside.


– drag the slide across the tuning pins, creating a rattling effect.

– modify the speed of the rattling, occasionally breaking down to individual grains (indicated by dots), and accelerating to a more steady stream (lines). Occasionally a sharp and fast scraping gesture is also specified. In addition, a superball mallet is used. Drag the superball mallet on the specified string inside the piano, creating a continuous sound.

Strings Bow positions: SP – sul ponticello ASP – alto sul ponticello (almost on the bridge) ST – sul tasto AST – alto sul tasto ORD – ordinario – bow directly on the bridge, with left hand muting the strings. Arrows to and from the notehead indicate the gradual movement to or away from the indicated bow position (for example, the passage starting in viola and violoncello between mm. 22-24).

Bow pressure: flaut. – flautando bowing, very light bow pressure. – granular sound: increased bow pressure and slow bow speed, creating a scratching sound. Few variants of this technique: 1) The passage in violoncello, starting from m. 21, where there is a gradual intensification of the bow pressure, resulting in the granular quality. 2) The passage in violin II, between measures 57 and 61, where the bow pressure alternates between flautando and over-pressure bowing, loosely following the graphic indications in the score. 3) The passage in contrabass, starting at m. 63, in which the granular sound is achieved by dragging the bow vertically (with a little horizontal motion added) with extreme bow pressure, with left hand mutes the strings.

– bowing clef. Used with the vertical granular sound, indicating the general direction of the bow.

– clef for playing behind the bridge (plucking the second string behind the bridge in this instance).

– circular bowing, with the direction indicated above (from the bridge to the fingerboard in this case).

– “bisbigliando”: finger the same pitch (on the same string) with different fingers, minute fluctuations of intonation are welcome.

– half-harmonic: left hand pressure somewhere between the light harmonic touch and a normal stopped tone, creating a noisy and grainy mixture of both.


A word about harmonics: Apart from their traditional use, ‘harmonic’ pressure is used at unusual nodes to produce complex sounds that will not correspond to a specific overtone (for example, the ‘touch major-second’ harmonics occurring in violoncello in the second measure). One can think of it as a spectrum from a stopped note, through a half-harmonic, to a full harmonic finger pressure.

– pizzicato with a guitar plectrum.
