Diagnostics, mapping and engagement meetings

Accomplishment of several expeditions along the banks of the Rio Doce to recognize impacts, listen to those affected, audio visual records and make diagnosis and articulation of strategic partnerships along the Rio Doce Basin. After each expedition, several meetings were held to share, systematize and co-create solutions. From this process comes the Rio Doce Alliance.

Co-creation and strengthening of the Rio Doce Alliance

Co-creation and improvement of a collaborative network to support the regeneration of Rio Doce. The Alliance is in the process of training and improving its organizational model. We work in the co-creation of regenerative projects, in the strengthening of local initiatives and groups and in communication processes, bridging the territory and other socioenvironmental and cultural engagement networks. Be an Ally, join us on this journey of learning, engagement and regeneration!

Integrated Actions in foz of Rio Doce Integrated Actions in Foz do Rio Doce is the result of the partnership between Alianรงa Rio Doce, Instituto Unidos Pela Vida and RioDoce.Help Through the recognition of territory was carried out a mapping of some needs and planning of collective actions with the community and organizations locations. The actions were carried out in 4 territories of Foz and 1 an itinerant action "Great Cycle" that will cover all the Rio Doce. The themes of the actions cover varied fronts such as arts, sports, culture, permaculture, events, festivities, ancestry, education, among other forms of regeneration. In general terms, the Integrated Actions Project in Foz will be developed by activating two axes: the experiences of engagement and social impact that consist in the promotion of activities / events in the mouth of Rio Doce and the Continuous Actions that consist of regular activities in the chosen territories, among them : weekly workshops, cinema, support for the operation of local organizations, visits and technical support to communities.

Regenera Rio Doce Festival The proposal of the Festival Regenera Rio Doce is to create a fertile space for the construction and sharing of knowledge, challenges and collaborative methodologies, capable of strengthening community ties and engaging in actions necessary for the Rio Doce Regeneration. The I Festival Regenera Rio Doce took place from July 14 to 30, 2017 in Foz do Rio Doce and had an intense program of workshops, talk wheels and community actions. The idea is that the Festival is annual and itinerant along the banks of the River Doce. The greatest socio-environmental disaster in the history of Brazil deserves the greatest collective regeneration movement ever seen! www.regenerariodoce.org

Cisterns, Sand Filters and Social Integration in the Areal Community An initiative of the Rio Doce Alliance in partnership with Expediciones Rio Doce Vivo, Associação Prosciense and LUSH, the project was held from July 14 to 30 and took place during the Rio Doce Regenera Festival, a beautiful experience of immersion in the Areal community with great love , hand in hand, conversations, workshops, mutirões, artist presentations and much learning !!! Five systems were installed to capture and treat rainwater. 4 of the systems have a capacity of 1200 liters and were installed in 3 houses and in a community church and another system with a capacity of 5200 liters was installed in Areal school. video: https://youtu.be/cUyNZjfVzUo

Water Game Water Game - A game under construction. A playful experience to discuss the biggest socio-environmental disaster in Brazil, learn about the local culture and put into action for the regeneration of the region impacted by the breakdown of the FundĂŁo Dam in Mariana in 2015. The game was started in 2016 to conserve and engage communities during a project to strengthen local forums throughout the Basin has since been improved and played in schools, events and community gatherings. http://wikiriodoce.org/Jogo_da_Bacia_do_Rio_Doce

Instituto Unidos pela Vida Cultural and Educational Center Support for the structuring of the Headquarters of the United Institute for Life and the realization of activities and workshops for children and young people in the mouth of the Rio Doce. We co-create projects and actions to help in the maintenance of the institute and the accomplishment of pedagogical artistic activities, which help in the symbolic elaboration of the drastic transformations in the daily life of the affected children. The activities bring together a photography, mosaic, painting and music and capoeira workshop in order to value the cultural heritage and stimulate the self-esteem of the affected communities as well as find joint ways to deal with the new local reality.

The Digital Plataform of the Rio Doce Regeneration WikiRioDoce.org is a collaborative project that aims to integrate and assist the processes of Regeneration of the Rio Doce Basin. It is the Free Wiki for the collaborative systematization of contents related to the Rio Doce Basin in general, and especially the contents generated in relation to the developments of the Greater Socio-Environmental Crime in the history of Brazil. EVERYONE can edit it! This platform in Wiki format emerges as a social technology that experiments the network organization to deal with processes of great magnitude, and its mission is to become the great Encyclopedia of Regeneration of the Rio Doce Basin. www.wikiriodoce.org

Ancestral Encounter in Areal This project consists of actions aimed at articulating interethnic, human and community relations through valorization, rescue and reconstruction of historically silenced and invisible ancestral cultures in the region, with the objective of strengthening political action to mitigate the impacts experienced by the arrival of mud with mining tailings. Based on ethnic studies that are being carried out in the region, initial training and development actions are being carried out in ceramic modeling inspired by archaeological traditions, as well as the construction of a community center in bioconstruction based on the ancient ancestral indigenous dwellings (the construction material is available and we are waiting for joint effort). Another action in October 2016 in Areal is a series of holistic and ancestral health activities.

Gastronomic Festivals Gastronomic Festivals and community experiences of adaptation of traditional riverside recipes. From the collective recognition of the traditional dishes and ingredients that have been impacted by the arrival of the mud, find new ingredients and ways of cultivating them in the territories aiming at the autonomy of food, the valorization of traditions and healthy and nutritional ways of replenishing nutrients in food everyday life.

Potential Projects

1. Environmental Regeneration, Permaculture and Eco Technologies

1.1

Regenerative

Backyards:

prototype

of

regenerative backyard and experimental model of mud stabilization in the landscape through the application of S.A.F., with the accomplishment of a practical workshop of agroforestry management in an area directly affected by the mud, possibly Barra Longa or Paracatu in the State of Minas Gerais. (Project to be carried out in the short term and continued in the medium term)

1.2 Integrated Permaculture and Water Management and Participative Design in the Krenak Indigenous Community: participatory diagnosis, permacultural design and installation of integrated water management systems in the community. Engaging action of installation of cisterns in the village and round of open conversations with indigenous leaders. Diagnosis

and

participatory

planning

of

systems

and

technologies as demanded. (medium-term project) 1.3 PDC Permaculture and Environmental Regeneration Course in the Mid Rio Doce together with the CIAAT: permaculture course for family farmers impacted in Governador Valadares. This is the largest city in the Mid Rio Doce, an ideal place to gather

representatives

from

different

regions

of

the

Hydrgraphic Basin to hold a PDC course. The NGO CIAAT has a field headquarters that can accommodate about 60 people, between facilitators and participants, with a cafeteria, and an area for theoretical and practical activities. (short- or medium-term project)

1. Environmental Regeneration, Permaculture and Eco Technologies

2. Social Entrepreneurship and Solidarity Economy

2.1 Development and continuity of the Native Plant Project, sustainable extractive management project in the Rio Doce mouth. Starting from an ethnobotanical study already carried out in the community of Povoação about the use of traditional plants of high symbolic value and economic potential, develop a laboratory and a line of dermo cosmetic products having the 'aroeira' and the 'breu branco' as base substances. Stimulating new prospects of income generation and self-esteem in the local population. (long-term project)

3. Community Engagement and Social Technologies 3.1 Support and training program of the Rio Doce Defense Forums: To stimulate and support the articulation of a Collaborative Network and continuous formation of leaderships, groups and organizations engaged in the defense of the rights and social-environmental regeneration of Rio Doce. Continuous and multidisciplinary training of instrumentation with tools of collaborative creation and social and environmental regeneration for the agents of the forums of the Rio Doce basin (high, mid and mouth) - build agenda with local forums. (mediumand long-term project) 3.2 Production of pedagogical games and booklets: development of tools that approach the crime/tragedy contents in an interactive and playful way and facilitate the understanding of the general context and stimulate the co-creation of solutions. Development of a kit that consists in the improvement of the 'Facts and Affects' game and distribution of the same to three schools along the Rio Doce. Creation of a memory game and a RioDoceDeNovo stickers album. 3.3 Cartography of mud and struggle: systematization of historical facts, mappings, actions, partners and possibilities along the Rio Doce basin. Creation of an interactive virtual map open to collaborations and development of a printed version map to be distributed in the communities along the Rio Doce.

3. Community Engagement and Social Technologies, 3.4 Community mobilization, engagement and development with the Oasis Game methodology. The Oasis Game is a social technology to support citizen mobilization and the realization of collective dreams in a community. In a simple, fast, and transformative process, we map out local beauties, resources and talents, connect with people and stories, and identify common dreams that locals have for the community. They decide what will be accomplished in a 2-day task force and everyone mobilizes to enable the networks and resources needed to make it happen. The power of the community is revealed and everything shows itself possible when we unite from dreams and boost local potential. Then it's time to celebrate and plan new, more structured, medium-term dreams. This methodology of the Elos Institute is free to use and has already driven transformations in more than 200 communities of 20 countries. We propose two possibilities of realization: a single application in Areal, in the Rio Doce mouth, or several simultaneous applications in different communities along the Rio Doce basin, thus promoting an OASIS Rio Doce Movement. (Short-term project, with the possibility of medium-term extension with follow-up)

3.5 Places to remember and play. Collective creation of public spaces of coexistence, reflection and leisure in the affected communities. Aiming to promote meeting spaces and alternatives for leisure since traditional social interaction spaces such as river banks, river and beach are unfit for use.

4. Legal Support and Strengthening of Local Associations

4.1 Support the restructuring of the Caboclo Bernardo Cultural Development Association: an organization that has been in existence for 15 years, with the potential to host different

projects

of

affective

regeneration,

political

confrontation and academic research in the line of socio-environmental regeneration of Rio Doce. Prototyping model of regularization of a local association at the mouth of the Rio Doce, introducing and developing joint forms of governance and participative management models. Provide legal advice and support for institutional regularization and insertion in national and international investment funds in order to foster and stimulate the autonomy and executive capacity of trustworthy local organizations that genuinely represent the interests of their populations. (short-term)

5. Art, Cultural Rescue/Preservation and Heritage Education

5.1 Circuit of Popular Art Museums and Heritage Education in Regência Augusta: The project consists of developing cultural valorization actions, seeking alternatives to foster tourism and self-esteem in the Vila de Regência at the mouth of the Rio Doce. The Project provides for a series of pedagogical, patrimonial and artistic education actions, with the central axis being the reopening of the Naif Art Museum of General Primo Pelissari. The museum's collection includes an important

set of sculptures and naif

paintings with great pedagogical potential to discuss the environmental crime that ravaged the Rio Doce. The popular artist used to collect in the mouth of the river, other than the wood, different materials discarded by the riverside cities, and through modeling, collages and paintings, reinvent the tailings giving them anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and extraordinary creatures forms. This collection is part of a Naïf production complex, a heritage capable of reinventing the foundations of the tourist vocation in the community. (medium-term project)

5. Art, Cultural Rescue/Preservation and Heritage Education 5.2 Sweet Schools: development of play games and educational activities in schools along the Rio Doce to stimulate reflection and learning about the crime-tragedy of the rupture of the FundĂŁo Dam and its consequences, as well as the encouragement of co-creation, with students and masters, of forms of engagement in concrete actions of regeneration. We have already applied a prototype model of the Rio Doce Game, 'Fatos e Afetos' Game, in schools, communities and groups and we want to improve it. The Water Game will be an unfolding, with a playful approach to address the theme of water in a different way: origin, care, contamination, regeneration, practical actions, among others. We aim to create a regional and national network of schools (which can expand to international) that can interact with local schools in the Rio Doce basin to exchange knowledge, experiences and perceptions among students on themes that permeate play, territory, culture and the relationship with rivers, seas and waters. (short- and medium-term project)

5.3 Interethnic Perspectives on Ancestral Culture of Areal Project: this project consists of actions that aim to articulate interethnic, human and community relations through the valorization, rescue and reconstruction of ancestral cultures historically silenced and invisibilized in the region, with the objective of strengthening the political action of struggle by the mitigation of impacts experienced after the arrival of the mud with mining tailings. Based on ethnic studies being carried out in the region, initial training and development actions in ceramic modeling inspired by the archaeological traditions are being carried out, as well as the construction of a bioconstruction community center based on the ancient ancestral indigenous dwellings (the constructive material is available and we are waiting for the joint effort stage). Another action in October 2016 in Areal is a part of a series of holistic and ancestral health activities.

5. Art, Cultural Rescue/Preservation and Heritage Education 5.4 Support the structuring of the Headquarters of the United for Life Institute and the realization of the second summer camp and counter-school activities for children affected in the Rio Doce mouth: realization of artistic pedagogical activities that help in the symbolic elaboration of the drastic changes in the daily life of the impacted children. The activities bring together photography, mosaic, painting and music workshops seeking to enhance cultural heritage and stimulate the self-esteem of the affected communities as well as find joint ways to deal with the new local reality.

5.5 Development of actions with artistic, theatrical and circus activities. Perform presentations in schools and public spaces using the approach of art and humor to generate affective connections and educational processes. Expand Riso Doce Expeditions. (short- or medium-term project)

6. Network, Communication and Articulation

6.1 Art and Video Activism meeting: development of a call for a meeting that brings together artists and activists for 5 days. This meeting will have a program of artistic interventions developed for each context and will bring together proposals for performance, dance, urban interventions, music and video documentary. During the festival "public edition islands" will be assembled, consisting of Hubs of collaborative creation and editing. The idea is to summon all those who have gross audiovisual material produced to work together on collaborative assemblies. The "edition islands" will also have free wifi and will serve as a channel for the dissemination of the contents generated during the Festival. The proposal is to hold 3 Festivals, one in the HIgh, one in the Mid and one in the Low Rio Doce.

7. Physical, Emotional and Food Health 7.1 Alive Body_ integrated experiences. Program of experiences and activities that integrate environmental awareness, corporal activities and food reeducation in communities affected by the mud that had their basic daily activities seriously compromised and that need to reinvent their ways and subexistence, leisure and relationship with the environment in which they live. From the sharing of life experiences and the presentation of inspiring experiences in other post-disaster contexts, experiences will be offered, from the rescue of self-confidence, reconnection with internal and external waters, to stimulating the creation of joint solutions and forms of replicate them in the community. Within a perspective of personal strengthening and restructuring of affective bonds and environmental care.
