ARCHITECTURE

I am Aliah Maisarah. I have always been intrigued by how a structure can also be a form of art hence I pursued architecture. My journey in Nanyang Polytechnic has enabled me to translate my ideas through design and structural planning while boosting me with self-esteem to articulate my ideas during a presentation. Upon completing 6 months of internship, it has trained me to be more adaptive while also gaining a better understanding of cultural context and social dynamicof architecture as I get to work with several organisation to collaborate on a public project. Outside of school curriculum, I love to bake desserts and read novels.

01 Reminiscence Of Boat Quay

Singapore river has a lifeline of almost 200 years. For many, Singapore River is a source of income. Many migrant workers came to Singapore to work as coolies Communities were form by the river. Due to their labourius job, the coolies had first hand experience of the river. They were able to go in and out of the riverbank freely. After the clean up of the sg river, there’s a loss of connection and relationship between the river and people of the newer generation. There are many rules and regulations implemented based on what we can’t and can do. Unlike the coolies, who could go into the river on their bumboats and experience the life by the river.

Hawkers

Many migrants worked as coolies, rickshaw pullers, craftsmen, etc in the harbours, quayside, on boats and supporting services. Many others worked as street hawkers feeding the poor and hungry multitudes

Coolies (labourers) would carry the goods like tea, coffee, spices, rice, etc. in heavy bales ashore from the bumboats berthed at Boat Quay to the traders’ store houses and godowns.

Point 1: not steady, swaying on bumboat, transporting the gunny sacks from the bumboats, careful steps

Magic: Sway (calm)

Point 2: Carrying the gunny sack on the shoulder while climbing the wooden plank, meticulous

Magic: Rocky slow motion (slightly moderate)

Point 3: Collection stocks point, push the sacks on a trolley, herculean and laborious, more force and effort needed to push, slow but continuous

Magic: a stream of swamp vessel (intermediate)

Genius In Nature - Acro Fortress

An intriguing study of how giant clams supports itself with its heavy weight. Giant clams as guru for the Genius In Nature project. The essence of its genius is the expanding space within as the calm opens up and the self-support structure which gives of the essence of defying gravity

Narrative:

Emotions create feelings that flow naturally. Humans are hard-wired to express themselves. In order for emotions to move through us freely, they must be accepted and expressed. Doing so enlivens us and fuels our creativity. Hence, people come about together to create this bond as a means of self-expression in the heart of a forest. This relates back to the peace acroyoga offers.

Offers a wider and higher space. Level 3 is more open to cater for the aerial skill activity. Here they practice their aerial performance and exercises.

With the space expanded, more people can be invited to watch the aerial silk performance.A big stage is set up for that. Then the stage will be kept after then end of the performance, and the space will return as per normal

Jurong East Station Rendering

“Love The Last March” Animal Sculptures Proposal

I was involved for the animal sculptures proposal for Keppel Station which I was tasked to propose a suitable location for the sculptures at the station.

Created a story to propose an ideology of the placement of the animal sculptures I got to practice how to draw sectional details to show interface of the plinth and granite. This task helped me to widen my creative-thinking skill and attention to detailing necessary information to construct the plinth underneath the sculpture plates.

Did a commuters movements mapping to gain a better understanding of how the commuters would move about in the station.

Helped me to navigate how to place the animals sculptures on the triangular turfing.

Technical Drawings

Helped to check materials used in the station according to M&W specs ( Materials & Workmanship) and General Info (GNI) sheet for ALP & ALE dwg.

Checked the room data box in the ALP dwg for all levels in the stations against the Architecture Design Criteria (ADC) codes. To ensure compliance in the stations rooms.

Prepared a station map for jurong station using photoshop and illustrator. Had to follow a certain requirements for fonts sizes, colour codings and image resolution for linewide purposes.

Reviewed the toilet compliance for Jurong East Station for concourse level according to ADC, BCA accessibility codes and JRL line wide design standard. Doing this task, enabled me to better understand how the accessibility codes are being integrated in toilet as I took the time to read the codes and try to understand them as I do my mark-ups for the drawings.
