Hello Santa Barbara Community, Youth Networked Services On behalf of PathPoint, I want to echo my gratitude for your ongoing support of the important work we do for individuals with disabilities. For over 52 years, we have been equipping individuals with disabilities to live as valued members of our communities.

PathPoint is happy to announce our newest program here in Santa Barbara County, Youth Networked Services (YNS), starting this October.

In Santa Barbara alone, we impact over 800 people a year and promote independent living for individuals to succeed.

YNS provides educational and employment support to youth ages 16-24 that are seeking opportunities and meet Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) eligibility requirements.

YNS connects youth to educational and career related opportunities as they prepare for the next stage of independence.

We are grateful for the Santa Barbara Community continually supporting our mission of learning, living and building communities. Because of your invaluable support, we have pioneered a platform for 52 years, and look forward to 52 more of continued impact and success.

Community Access At PathPoint, we believe that all individuals, regardless of their developmental disability, physical challenges, or concurrent medical conditions, need stimulating activities and social interaction in a meaningful environment.

Activities are designed to maintain a high quality of life while encouraging maximum social, intellectual, and physical capabilities. Our services provide the support necessary to allow people with special needs to live with dignity and selfconfidence in their community and enjoy their lives.

Community Access Programs provide: • Vocational training • Work-readiness assistance • Community access skills • Assistive Technology • Social survival skills, such as banking, budgeting, public transportation, etc.

We have recently partnered with The Rhythmic Arts Project (TRAP) and are proud to implement their curriculum in our Community Access programs. To learn more about TRAP, visit www.TRAP-Learning.org

Employment PathPoint values every life, and we believe every individual should be equipped to live a full and independent life.

Through these efforts we’ve teamed up with local employers to create job opportunities for the individuals we serve. Connecting with over 100 employers in Santa Barbara County we have enabled individuals with disabilities and disadvantages to have the opportunity to broaden their skill set, provide income for themselves and build a satisfying career they love.

Participant Spotlights Elizabeth attends our Community Access Program (CAP). CAP works on goals in relation to socialization, communication, physical development, use of assistive technology and enhancing independence in many areas. Through this, Elizabeth is able to further develop her physical and sensory-motor development, as well as communicate with her father on the East Coast. With the support of CAP staff, Elizabeth is able to communicate in ways she never has before.

Because of this assistive technology, Elizabeth has been able to achieve greater independence in operating a computer and an iPad by clicking a switch with her head.

This allows Elizabeth to open any application she desires and communicate with her family and friends in ways she never knew possible before.

Jon is part of the Employment Program at PathPoint. Since joining the program, Jon has obtained a job at Best Buy. Initially, he had difficulties with typing, spelling and navigating his employer’s database system. However, Jon was able to utilize a hands-free headset, which helps him communicate with customers and coworkers in other departments. The use of this adaptive device has allowed Jon to become more independent, productive and comfortable in his work.

Through PathPoint, Jon utilizes a Job Coach to help him establish work goals, learn new skills and solve employment-related challenges. Despite the obstacles Jon has faced, he has been able to keep a positive attitude, dedication and professionalism, which have all become a recipe for his success.

Independent Living For many PathPoint participants, the goal of living independently is best achieved through the support of others. We believe that fostering independence allows those with varying abilities and circumstances to thrive in their local communities.

PathPoint facilitates greater independence in daily living, less dependence on direct care and increased community integration. Our Independent Living Programs offer individuals with special needs the assistance and support required to live in their communities as independently as possible.

Independent Living Programs are designed to teach participants the following: • Independent living skills • Household responsibilities • Community mobility and safety • Personal effectiveness • Social skills • Social-sexual education • Health and nutrition • Recreation planning • Budgeting and banking

Dave is a participant of PathPoint’s Independent Living programs. After a visit to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital eight years ago, he decided that volunteering with patients would be a great way to help in the community. Through the support David receives from PathPoint’s Independent Living Services, David has thrived and has grown to become one of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital’s top volunteers. PathPoint staff not only support David at Cottage Hospital, but also at home as well. Staff support him in completing everyday tasks, such as sorting through mail, paying bills and doing household chores to ensure his life is running smoothly.

When asked what he enjoys about volunteering, he simply replied, “I just love helping the hospital and meeting new people.” Dave recently received the distinguished honor pin for volunteering over 100 hours at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, and when asked if he was going to reach 200 hours, he excitedly replied, “Yes!”

Behavioral Health Since 1980, PathPoint’s Behavioral Health Division’s cost-effective residential programs have prepared destitute people with mental illness to achieve the basic self-care and homecare responsibilities that lead to true independence. Our low-cost housing and services have a proven success record and include rehabilitation, crisis prevention and stabilization, counseling and reduction in use of high-cost emergency services, homeless prevention, and increased functionality.

Celebrating one year in October, PathPoint’s new Counseling Center offers confidential therapy to our local community. Our services aim to help you throughout the many stages of your life. Our highly trained and supervised therapists and interns provide services to children, adolescents, and adults that are individualized, client centered, and strength based. Conveniently located in downtown Santa Barbara, we offer both day and evening appointments.
