Genova’s Ark (Genova’s Parking Lot of Porta Siberia, Genova, Italy) ARCH 3510: Synthesis Studio + Digital Ecologies | Professor Dan Harding Team Members: Alexis Pagano + Thomas Murray + Krista Wise + Cam Currie | Fall 2020 | 4 months

Our team was asked to design a 50 person library in the heart of Genoa’s port. For Genova’s Ark we really wanted to celebrate the rich history of the surrounding port. If you take a look at our Mind Map on the previous page, you can see how we deduced our architectural design. Some key takeaways include using boat hulls to boolean our CLT wall panels, the use of CLT to play off of the initial wood shipbuilding native to the area, boat cleats to influence our mullion system, and steel roping was used to mimic nautical ropes for cross bracing and safety railing within the building. Above, you can see what each team member worked on specifically as well as our initial premises when beginning this project. Overall though, our team worked hand in hand to complete Genova’s Ark.

Since our library is located in the heart of Genoa’s port, we really wanted our library to reflect and emody the surrounding rich history. We chose to utilize CLT as our structure, and we used the idea of a ship going through our building to boolean out arches. To the right you can see the process for the final booleans.

Once our building had been completely thought out, we set out to implement a library. The ground floor and first floor are more public spaces while the second and third floor are more private.

Looking at the sections, you can see that our building creates a sense of permeability both transversally and longitudinally.

Genova’s Ark is construcuted with vertical elements going in first, the the floor is constructed with panels that lock together using dove tail joints. Once the panels are locked together, a cap permanently locks the floor together. Once that is complete, concrete can be poured to add texture.

The first model we constructed was a 1/16� chipboard model. The purpose of this model was to figure out how our vertical CLT elements would work with our floor panels and if they would lock together correctly.

This was the last model we constructed at a 1/2� scale. This model was super helpful in helping us determine what kind of reinforcement was needed. We had to implement a new facade system that would not only serve to brace the building, but also hold the glass facade. We used this model to help build a more accurate digital model.

The Den (Ciutadellla Park, Barcelona, Spain) ARCH 3540: Studio Barcelona | Professor Miguel Roldan Alexis Pagano + Alyssa Halloran | Spring 2020 | 3 months

Barcelona is known for it’s dense, urban population. Green spaces and public plazas offer the public an oasis away from this density. It’s a way for them to reconnect with nature and each other. Our proposal is to restore the site where the current Martorell Museum is located and give back usable, public, green space.

As of late, the Martorell Museum acts as a barrier between the Born neighborhood and the Ciutadella Park. Because of this, The Den is a community building that has been sunken underground in order to give public plaza space back to the surrounding community. The program that would originally be placed inside the existing museum will now be spread out within the site limits underground.

Above ground, the landscape reflects what lies beneath. Where skylights jut from the ground, users can catch a small glimpse into what lies beneath the surface. Water fountains collect rainwater in order to be filtered into a biofiltration system that will supply water to not only the atrium below but also to the bathrooms. Excess water can be used elsewhere in the park. Greenery that once existed on the current site has been replanted and dispersed into the new, desired landscape as well as additional greenery.

Alexis Pagano Portfolio The Den’s unique organic form originates from the particular placement of program bubbles around a central light well inside the buildable limits. Whenever unique intersections happen between certain program bubbles, skylights have been placed in order to filter natural light and air down into the area below. The Den is a flexible design that will be able to accommodate any type of program that is desired.

To accommodate The Den’s unique program, a specific structure has been designed to support not only the building itself and what lies within, but also what lies above it. The idea is to make the user feel at home and comfortable 6 meters underground. We didn’t want to overwhelm the users so far underground so with the filtration of natural light, high ceilings, and the use of wood paneling, we have created a seemingly airy and light space. Steel beams have been placed in a concentric layout following the program inside. The massive steel beams do not overpower the space, but they do allow the user to feel comfortable knowing that they are well protected within the space they are in. The outer limit walls have also been reinforced to become retaining walls with overlays of wood panelling to bring back a since of light and airy space underground.

The Collect (Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn, New York) ARCH 3500: Architectural Foundations II | Professor David Lee Alexis Pagano + Kara Ammon | Fall 2019 | 3 months This was a joint project done alongside Kara Ammon.

The Collect is a multi-use co-working building that houses a variety of programming that caters to both the Gowanus community and the greater Brooklyn area. Located between the 9th St. subway station and the Gowanus Canal, the Collect connects users to the canal promenade, subway station, and the programming inside the building. The first and second-floor plaza creates a connection between both the public and private users of the building. The eighth-floor terrace provides a subway connection and a secondary gathering space accompanied by a food court. Through the collection of many programs, a mini-city emerges fit for the everyday worker and the general public.

The Gowanus Canal is a former industrial hub situated between two residential communities. Right now, the Gowanus Canal is a contaminated wasteland that is looking to be revived.

To embody the history of Gowanus, the building is comprised of two massing strategies. The first strategy reflects the brownstone homes in the surrounding neighborhood. Volumes that are proportional in plan to the homes are broken up and arranged in ribbons parallel to Huntington St. The rigid programmatic spaces are shaped by the volumes and the more fluid mosh-pit spaces lie between the volumes. The second strategy echoes the industrial history of Gowanus via a connective glass shell.

When choosing the facade for our building, Kara and I decided to use terra cotta pipes to encase the areas where glass was desired and use terra cotta panels where a more solid facade was desired. When looking at the terra cotta pipes, we designed a fixture to hold the glass as well as the pipes together as one. We then ventured to build a 1”:1’ scale of this fixture. Everything was built in house at our school’s woodshop, and Kara and I each cast our own “pipe.” The pipe pictured is my plaster cast.

The Collect is a mini-city that provides Gowanus with a space to gather, work, and play.

Kara and I built a scale model to fit on a scale site model. We used high quality wood samples of Mahogany and Ash to represent both the terra cotta pipes and the solid masses respectively. To construct these pieces, we once again used our school’s woodshop. To represent the glass shell, we 3D printed two separate pieces due to the restriction of 3D printer sizes. For this, we used our school’s Digital Design Studio to construct the prints.

Bellevue Branch Library (Cottontown, Columbia, South Carolina) ARCH 2520: Architectural Foundations I | Professor Tim Brown and Brandon Pass Alexis Pagano | Spring 2019 | 9 weeks

The Bellevue is unique in many different ways. First, the site has been excavated to create a terraced amphitheater effect for outside gatherings. Users are able to occupy space below the ground level as well as enter the library from down below. In regards to the design of the Bellevue, the initial massing was two rectangular masses with a smaller rectangular mass in between. The middle mass is a solid curtain wall that allows sunlight to penetrate the building at all times of the day. Because the middle mass is smaller than the other two, the upper mass begins to look like it is hovering while the bottom mass is grounded below grade. One other unique feature is that the Bellevue has a large, open void in the center that allows users to look from one floor to the next without any obstacles. This allows users to feel like they are connected throughout the library as well as simulate the flow of information.

The Bellevue Branch Library is sited in the Cottontown neighborhood of Columbia, South Carolina and would serve the Earlewood, Elmwood Park, and Cottontown neighborhoods. The Bellevue will provide many full-range library services, public education programs, support citizen initiatives, and provide space for public forums, public workshops, and host community meetings.

This project was nominated and was a finalist for the AIA-SC People’s Choice Awards 2019.

The model above was the final model that I presented.

I constructed the final model by casting separate plaster and soap pieces. Each piece had its own different size/shape mold that was used. The plaster molds held together after removing the hardened plaster; however, to get the soap out of its mold, I had to deconstruct the soap mold. There was one plaster piece that ended up breaking, but I just reused the same mold and ended up with a flawless model.

The Cabins (Issaqueena, Clemson, South Carolina) ARCH 2520: Architectural Foundations I | Professor Tim Brown and Brandon Pass Alexis Pagano | Spring 2019 | 4.5 weeks Alexis Pagano Portfolio

The Cabins are sited on Issaqueena Lake in Clemson, South Carolina. They are shelters for decompression, contemplation, reflection, and relaxation. Each cabin is uniquely designed to fit into their own respective part of the site. The Cabins are sunk into the ground and to accommodate such modifications, the site has to be rethought and supported by retaining walls where the Cabins are sunken into the site. Users will enter the site by climbing down stairs that have been carved into the site. Users may then look out upon entering to the lake below. The purpose of creating such intentional site change is to create an experience for the users of the cabins.

To figure out how I would carve out areas for the cabins located at Issaqueena, I first constructed a foam model of the topography of the desired area.

I then made smaller topography models and began to carve out random sections with my Xacto knife. I also inserted mock cabin models into those cuts to see how the cabins would interact with the site.

The Yowie Spartanburg Prep, Spartanburg, South Carolina) ARCH 2510: Architectural Foundations I | Professor Rob Silance Alexis Pagano | Fall 2018 | 2.5 weeks Alexis Pagano Portfolio

The Yowie was an exercise that introduced the boolean operations - using intersecting shapes to essentially carve one volume out of another. Using a 12”x12”x12” cube as a base, I was challenged to create a small folie architecturale for the students of Spartanburg Preparatory School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The structure of the folie will be developed based on input from the students themselves. I began by using four diagonally positioned rectangular prisms to pierce each face of the cube. Through many iterations, I began to add more prisms by shifting and manipulating them to make the complexity of the inside appear from the outside.

Alexis Pagano Portfolio This project first began with a Boolean workshop where the idea of a piece of cheese being a 12”x12”x12” box was being “cut” with a knife (other rectangular objects). For the workshop, only 3 rectangluar prisms pierced the box. For the actual project itself, the box could be pierced with as many rectangluar prisms in order to get the shape we so desired. For the Folie, I used over 15 different prisms to cut with.

When cutting through the Folie, there are many unique spaces created. Users can interact with the Folie in numerous different ways.

Some areas are more open and you can stand completely upright.

In other, more intimate spaces, children can sit and rest.

Alexis Pagano Portfolio To complete the Folie project, we had a workshop where traditional and advanced timber framing were both introduced. I was asked to frame the Folie using both framing methods where two faces would be traditional framing and the other two were advanced framing. The roof and floor followed typical guidelines regarding each system respectively. I was also asked to think about siding for one side.

I was given the Milam Residence as my second real area of study beginning my spring semester of freshman year. I was asked to analyze every last detail about this residence.

I had to conduct my own research in order to find floor plans, sections, photos, etc.

From there I was asked to draw those same documents myself and put myself in the architect’s shoes. It was definitely a great learning experience.

This project introduced me to almost every media type there is to use. I did everything from graphite plans and sections to my first ever watercolor drawings for an interior rendering. I also constructed my first model using matte board and my second model using chipboard, wood, and matte board. I also created some of my first ever digital drawings and renders.

This was a great project to orient myself in the world of architecture.

This was a mini project at the beginning of the studio.

I was asked to create a one person library for a nomadic adolescent. The In-Between is completely collapsible and a pop-up library that can be transported by land or sea.

For the sisters project, I was asked to create candle shrouds for three tea candles. I thought about the idea of a cave and a cool way to give the shroud texture. I chose tin foil because you can ball it up and manipulate it in different ways.

I started with a large sheet of tin foil and started balling it up into a shape I found aesthetically pleasing. From there, I drizzled the plaster on top of the tin foil. Once I had enough plaster, I sat the entire thing on top of a bowl so as to keep the round shape. The weight of the plaster on the tin foil was causing it to flatten so that is the reason the bowl was used.I also balled up some smaller pieces of tin foil for the top of the mold.

The Warp was an exercise that began by simply folding paper to create a form. The more manipulated the paper became, the more rigid. Many crease patterns were tested but one really began to interest me. The larger I created the crease pattern, the larger the scale of the form. For the Esquisse, I was challenged to make a covering for Lee III Hall at Clemson University in South Carolina. The current covering allows water to seep through and does little to protect. The Warp creates a new, inviting covering to allow users to safely get inside Lee III.

Lady Street (Columbia, SC) POND & Co. | Summer Internship Alexis Pagano | Summer 2019 | 2 weeks

I began my professional career at POND & Co. as an architectural intern in the summer of 2019. The first project I worked on almost entirely by myself was a project for the City of Columbia (South Carolina). Play with Your City hosts an open competition where anyone can submit proposals for a temporary installation during the summer that is sponsored by the City of Columbia. The idea is to bring the community together and out in public during the summer.

Lady Street is an extremely busy street and after visiting, one can see how daunting it is to cross the 8-line highway.

Also upon further research, Lady Street is known to be dimly lit and quite boring. In order to adress these two concerns, first I designed a street painting to slow down traffic and promote pedestrian travel. To address the travels along Lady Street as a pedestrian, I designed a modular shading system that provides shade during the day and light at night.

To further understand the project and concepts, you can follow along through the presentation boards that were presented to the City of Columbia. My design did go on to win the competition and the City of Columbia did end up building the modular shade systems.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Planters were explored for their capacity to bring life and color to urban environments, as well as provide opportunities for seating.

They create a change in scale from surrounding buildings as well as a change in texture and materiality from the brick and concrete of downtown Columbia.

In conjunction with planters, sidewalk painting can be used to break apart the monotony of a typical sidewalk and create a path for pedestrians to follow.

From our exploration of the site, we knew there was a need for additional shading along many points of Lady Street. Improving the quantity and quality of shading would make the area more comfortable for pedestrians, and give more reason to journy between Main Street and the Vista.

River Road House (Columbia, SC) POND & Co. | Summer Internship Alexis Pagano | Summer 2019 | 2 weeks

One of the last projects I got to work on at POND & Co. before I went back to school was a house situated on Lake Murray. A recently married couple had purchased the 1970s built home and was looking to do a complete revamp of the place. I was given complete control of the project and got to work on everything by myself. I also go to schedule meetings with the client regularly to discuss where I was at each stage of the project. To begin the project, my coworker, William, and I visited the residence and took measurements, pictures, and wrote down all necessary information regarding the home. Over the next couple of weeks, I worked on building a Revit model of the home completely from scratch. During this time I was given the task of creating and designing a new entrance to the home as well as trying to reconfigure the existing floor plan as well as creating a new one. I didn’t get a chance to see what the clients ended up going with because I had to leave, but here, you can see the last spread of new proposed floor plans as well as the proposed entrance ideas. 























Floor Plan 1 looks to expand the existing boundaries of the house while maintaining the original floor plan layout. Additional facilities were added per the clients guidelines.























Floor Plan 4 also looks to expand the existing boundaries of the house; however, the floor plan is completely reworked. The point of the two differing floor plans was to see what could be done with the home and compare which option would work in terms of what the client wanted and needed.

The lakeside view introduced a new deck and new wall of windows. 

This exterior idea introduces wood and creates a split roof overhang. 







Part of working on this job was to create a new entrance for the clients. Both ideas kept the existing roof line but used two different styles. This exterior idea keeps the white brick and large windows were added with an overhang.



The Lower Level just had the staircase location moved and also had a revamp of the bathroom.



 

This summer (Summer 2020) I had trouble finding work and someone to hire me. To make up for that and to give me something to do, I started painting shoes. I have always had a passion for shoes and for painting. It was fate that I found a way to create and work with two things Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m passionate about while also making a business out of it.

This is just a small sample collection of some of my most favorite work thus far. I never expected to be where I am now and I love every minute of it.

There is so much more to come in the future!
