MGT 5000 - Evaluating Research in Management
AEA Guiding Principles May 13, 2017 | Alexis Lake
Assignment: Provide a one page summary of an evaluation you're aware of that was ignored that resulted in damage to a corporation, individual, or the public at large. This could include one done/used by your own organization.

At my previous employer, a specific division within the company conducted two evaluations. One evaluation was focused externally on customers and how to improve the manufacturing methods and products. The other evaluation focused internally on the employees and ways to improve the work environment. While these were separate evaluations, there was overlap in the stakeholders. Essentially the external evaluation found that in order to meet the global needs of the customers, the company needed to expand the manufacturing efforts and locations. This meant more locations in places like Germany and China. While this created exciting growth potential for the company, many employees did not understand the objectives for the expansions, which underscores the employee evaluation results. Those results demonstrated that employee morale was low. Many employees felt that their work and responsibilities did not contribute to the collective success of the business, or even the company as a whole. The employees expressed that they did not understand how the business and products fit within the company. These were some serious human resources and employee communications issues, that unfortunately were ignored to focus more on the customer specific evaluation. The business charged ahead with expanding, creating new facilities, and then requiring new training, recruitment for new employees, and relocations for some current employees. Needless to say, the expansion was not as successful as could have been. Employees struggled to complete the work. While the work did get completed, as soon as the ribbon-cutting ceremonies ended, many employees began looking into new opportunities in other businesses within the company, or just left the company. This essentially left these new locations with less qualified and experienced leadership to get the business underway. This then lead to more serious business concerns. Products were not being made fast enough to meet customer demand. Soon the business had to go into allocation mode for all of its customers. If the business had simply taken the time to respect all the stakeholders and understand the general welfare of the stakeholders it could have better avoided this business issue. By focusing on the customers and not enough on the employees, the customers were eventually impacted.
