MGT 5015 - Leadership Alexis Lake Citizen Behavior - 2/28/17 The concept of organizational citizenship behavior focuses on how individuals go beyond the prescribed or assigned roles. These individuals feel a close relationship or stake in the success of the overall organization. In the workplace this means followers go beyond their normal duties without much reward. Organizational citizenship or “good citizenship is thought to include a variety of employee behaviors, such as taking on additional assignments, voluntarily assisting other people at work, keeping up with developments in one’s field or profession, or following company rules when no one is watching,” (Bolino, Turnley, & Averett, 2003). As an example, students demonstrate behaviors consistent with good organizational citizenship. College students demonstrate citizenship behaviors many different ways. One way is that college students often volunteer their time to help with classmates projects, even if they are not directly involved in the project. For example, when I was an undergrad, more than 50 graduate level students were willing to be in a focus group for my team’s research in a public relations student competition at the national level. The focus groups were time intensive with no immediate reward, but the students were still very willing to pitch in and help us. Many students even expressed that they knew that our group winning the competition meant positive news and success for the college as a whole. By helping the student become more successful, the college or university has more successful students, which helps attract more students (or revenue) in the future. This behavior happens in the workplace as well. In the office, many co-workers are willing to volunteer for committees or special projects to improve something, even if it is outside their day-to-day responsibilities.
