Net Zero Housing Authority in Hilo, Hawaii Collaboration with Guadalupe Dominguez

Reconnecting Resilient Roots (also known as RRR) is in Hilo, Hawaii, on the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. RRR is specifically placed on the Public Housing Authority site where the affordable project is designed to accommodate locals while maintaining the connection with nature. RRR site lays on Kapiolani Street and Akahi Street which intersect Hema Street and Wailoa Street. When creating the layout, breaking out the masses of units allows for more air to flow into the site. Furthermore, the orientation of the west and east buildings is crucial as it blocks direct sunlight from the south. This orientation is not only significant from a design perspective but also fosters a sense of community among the locals. It allows them to share views with one another and the shared lanai space.

The island is renowned for its consistent rainfall of about 130 inches of rain annually and high humidity levels. RRR has adapted to the environment by using the island’s extreme weather conditions to create comfortable living conditions. It does so by utilizing passive cooling techniques to harness the island’s hot winds for cooling, which is called cross ventilation. Cross ventilation consists of placing a lower open window where the cool air comes in and higher open windows are for hot air to escape, since warm air rises and cool air sinks. To increase the air flow into the unit spaces even more, permeable brick walls were added 8ft above to nonstructural framing inside the space.

Additionally, RRR is net zero on water and electricity. The project became net zero for water by implementing shed roofs in which can catch the rain fall and be guided by a rain screen to enter a bioswales. The bioswales get filtered through a 5-stage filtration system. The rainwater goes through a mix of native shrubs, mulch layer, bioretention soil, gravel, and perforated underdrain to become clean water. Then this clean water can be used for all the residents and after it has been used, the water system collects grey water and can be given to the plants out in the gardens through a subsurface irrigation system. Plants that can intake the grey water are bananas, coconut, papaya, guava, and sugarcane.

Now how the project became net zero on energy is simply matching the energy consumption of the average use in the units by placing solar tiles along the shed roofs. On average each shed roof has roughly about 700 solar tiles. Based on those tiles the estimated solar system output annually is 499,037 kWh/Year. However, with the help of solar panels being placed above the garden roofs it allowed the number to rise to 630,638 kWh/Year, which offset what the residence would need annually by 47,496 kWh/Year.

Other than the shed roofs, there are also flat parapet roofs which contain gardens and solar panels. These garden roofs help with shading but also allow for crops to grow and nourish the people on the site. Not only do the gardens roofs have fruit trees but there are chicken coops disperse along the site in which residents can collect their eggs to consume.

Overall, Reconnecting Resilient Roots allows for residents to come together and help a community and environment grow positively through a regenerative approach. It does so by becoming net zero on water and electricity, and taking account on the land and how it can be sustainably sourced.

1.Design for Integration The project has integrated itself into the small-scale residential site. Locals highly value a connection to nature which the project offers through enhancing the sound of rain, private and shared lanai spaces, roof gardens, and a vegetated façade.

2.Design for Equitable Communities The project targets local food sourcing, public transportation, regenerative learning, and diversity.

3.Design for Ecosystem Ecosystems are both promoted and restored within the project.

The site will house 100% native or adapted vegetation. The regenerative gardens will utilize grey water resistant, native, nitrogen rich vegetation that will restore the soil health.

4.Design for Water The project will have net zero water. All water needed will be supplied through catchment systems. This was possible through efficient water use with the implementation of grey water in toilets and sub-level irrigation.

5.Design for Economy The project approaches economic concerns through early investments for long-term savings. The project significantly reduces utility bill rates for occupants by producing its own electrical and water demand. The material selection also maximizes recycled materials and allows the building components to be recycled and reused at the building’s end of life.

6.Design for Energy The project is 100% cooled by passive strategies. The project takes advantage of the strong winds to utilize cross ventilation to cool interior spaces. The project produces a surplus of the energy demanded by occupants with all solar roofs. This makes the project completely independent of Hawaii’s dirty grid.

7.Design for Well-Being The well-being of all tenants is accounted for in the maximized connection to nature, on-site physical activity spaces, a regenerative learning center, local food sourcing, and material selection.

8.Design for Resources Hawaii faces many challenges when it comes to building materials because of its dependency on outsourcing overseas. Therefore, the project has turned toward recycled materials to balance the embodied carbon. 30% of concrete used on the project will come from a Hawaii-based company that recycles all components needed for concrete from demolished concrete. Some of the wood utilized in the structure will also be recycled redwood.

9.Design for Change On the macro scale, the project offers net zero water, net zero energy, net zero carbon, and a 100% passively cooled space that will enable the project to continue regular use even in the event of catastrophic weather events. On the micro scale, the unit floorplan layouts promote flexibility and multi-generational households through open floorplans and built-in, transformable furniture.

10.Design for Discovery The project proposed the implementation of streamlined household management that facilitates and accounts for maintenance needed. There will also be surveys depicting how residents react to the design of the project.

ARC 4370 (Fall 2023) Roof Pond Research

Collaboration with Marco Espinoza

This research evaluates and tests an experimental roof pond to create and maximize the passive cooling effect on the interior space of a test cell. Doing so with one of the simplest passive cooling strategies, a roof pond.

In the prime of climate change, our society and architecture rely on electricity and energy to function. However, with many different new technological advancements, we still need to find ways to reduce the CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. An altering way to overcome this obstacle is to become carbon neutral, or even net positive. To do so in a dry hot climate, such as Pomona, California, there is a need to innovate passive cooling approaches. An effective and affordable approach is through water roof ponds. Water roof ponds are used with non-complicated components and can substitute an expensive mechanical system. Water roof ponds can help buildings in hot dry climates in winter and summer time intervals.

With the help of the HOBOware software, we are able to use sensors and pinpoint them in specific areas in our test cell and control cell. This will give us the data we need to fulfill our research and help us find out what we have accomplished and possibly what we could have done better.

The time interval will be 10 minutes during the start date and they will all operate at the same time.

Mixed-Used Multifamily Housing Devopment Santa Ana, California The mixed-use multifamily development in Santa Ana was intended to engage the space near the main train station for future residents. As a result, it allowed the podium level space to be engaged day and night with creating local food courts to create a sense of community. The masses of the buildings allow for private and public spaces to be used for residents or even locals enjoying the area. It enables natural courtyards for communities to gather. On the upper level of the podium, it consists of residential spaces, lobby, or gym which residents can access. Residences are encouraged to take the unique paths of stairways and view the enticing coner windows that the development has offer.

ARC 2021A (Spring 2022)

School of Architecture Cal Poly Pomona Given the task of designing a new school of Architecture on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona, it was important to understand the pre-existing structure it held on to the campus. It was essential that the structure stood on its own, however the building needed to carry a larger purpose and symbol of understanding the growth of architecture students. It became important that there was a hierarchy in the building regarding the years in which the students were in and carrying a circulation path beyond the exterior of the building. From the extrusions implemented to the facade it allowed for students to reach another floor and see the progress work of another year in the program. It allows a sense of community and a sense of connection within the architecture studio experience. Even the facade held a soft appearance so direct sunlight wouldn’t transfer and it brought a sense of peace as anyone can enter the extruded circulation and see the beyond views of LA county.
