JOURNEY- THE HOMELESS WOMAN: SEEKING EMPLOYMENT

THE LIVING WATERS CENTER

Using water from the Thames to provide opportunities and healing to the homeless and the Woolwich community.

This proposition seeks to heal the homeless as well as the Woolwich Dockyard community- cultivating and providing them with financial, social and psychological opportunities to get them off the streets and offer healing facilities through filtered Thames Water.

SITE

The scheme sits on the two pools formally known as ‘Woolwich Dockyard’. Each building floats on the water like the boats that resided there at one point in time. The water from the Thames is taken through large pipes and is filtered to be used in all the spaces on the site such as the café, the hydroponic garden and is given directly to the homeless who have come to seek refuge.

THE CONTEMPORARY (RELACED)

The Contemporary Relaced deconstructs and relaces the art gallery typology to create an inclusive and inviting artistic hub for the city, bringing learning to the heart of the Nottingham Contemporary.

This scheme has been brought together by untangling and recomposing the threads and ‘lost connections’ within Nottingham’s rich industrial past so that the proposal is interwoven within the complex contextual fabric of the city. Central to the proposal is the idea of integrating a scale of permeability within the existing, oppressive boundaries of a contemporary art gallery, introducing fluidity to the design and blurring the boundaries between the institution and its home.

The scheme is set out over two sites: Site 1 is the original site of the Contemporary, on which we propose a two-storey extension, Site 2 is connected to the gallery via the main road, located under a viaduct by the canal. Interrogation of the site and wider context allowed us to identify some key issues and opportunities to respond to within our scheme.

INTERACTIVE LEARNING SPACE

PERFORMANCE AND SOIREES

The ‘Market square’ learning space is divided up with a curtain system developed from investigation of the architectural qualities of fabric and the inherent permeable qualities it possesses. The space can be adapted according to the desired use offering more enclosed and intimate nooks from meetings and drawn open to reveal a space for presenting and entertaining

Upon journeying further into the learning space there is the ‘theatre’, an enclosed and contemplative space filled with fixed tiered seating allowing for presentations and teaching to take place effectively.

PROPOSED LEARNING SPACE

The lace factory typology has been translated into a workshop space for practical, collaborative and performative activities on site 2. The building has been developed to encompass various levels of permeability, with bi-fold doors running along the perimeter and an outside activity area covered by beams. Reclaimed timber decking will be used for the walkway and canopy

Pigmented concrete using recycled aggregate will be used for the flooring throughout. The recycled steel beam structure will be used for the building framework The grey bricks will be reclaimed and utilised throughout the design.

GREENWALL FAÇADE

For this project, we were tasked with designing a new façade for our existing Architecture Building. The aim was to create a façade that was sustainable, has contextual relatability and is aesthetically pleasing. (Located in Loughborough University).

My concept derived from the initial observation of there being an abundance of fallen leaves on the site, due to the season. I was then interested in the shapes that are generated within leaves. These shapes were then used to create wooden panels. In addition, the topography and nature of the site informed the façade layout. I also understood that I wanted to extrude panels for the facade to be more dynamic.

EXISTING ELEVATION AND SECTION

My proposition uses modular form vegetation at different extrusions to create a versatile façade that is also sustainable and encourages wildlife.

STAINED GLASS WINDOW STUDY

Stained Glass has been used in churches for generations. Colour psychology is the link between colours and emotions. Using stained glass, I want to evoke certain emotions throughout the library so different occupants will have their own unique experience of the space.

Using the most popular colours from the ‘emotion popularity’ diagram, I performed some light studies to compare how coloured lighting can change the atmosphere of a space compared to normal light I also used different scaled spaces to see how the same sized shapes/ openings can alter the atmosphere. The scale of the spaces were determined by looking at church typologies.

PARK(ING) LOT: PLANT(ING) A LOT

For this Competition (LOVE ARCHITECTURE 2020: Leicester), we were tasked to imagine we were no longer able to drive cars within our cities and design an installation that would occupy a single parking space (ca. 3m by 5.5m) with an opportunity to reinvent life on the City street.

Our team recognised that due to COVID, many vulnerable people had no way to communicate with families and were often lonely. The planting instalments we created were designed to encourage pensioners specifically to go outdoors and interact with each other and their families safely, following COVID guidelines.

The allotments can be arranged in different ways depending on the previous type of parking spaces. In addition, the plant pots are at different heights for them to be accessible to all and more personalised. Therefore, each pot is unique and customised for many different users e.g., wheelchair users and children.

HARROW LANE – FUSE ARCHITECTS

Harrow Lane is a 116 Home development in Hastings. There are 5 House Types ranging from affordable rent to shared ownership homes. Construction was halted in 2021 and is set to begin again in 2024. Our role was to amend drawings from client comments for tender.

In this project, a major change that was made was the wall build-up. Therefore, the site layout needed to be updated. I made amendments to the site plan on Autocad. Additionally, I made changes to the 40 Block elevations for the development – making sure that the layouts are to brick dimensions. I also issued drawings for the bathrooms and kitchens for all the house types in Revit.

ARTWORK 07

My passion for Architecture and Design derived from my passion of art. Therefore, in this section, I would like to showcase the art I do in my spare time which helps me to always be creative. This piece is a self-portrait of my mother where I experimented with colour to express her characteristicsvibrancy and warmth.

SELF PORTRAITS - DISTORTION

This project looked at how facial expressions can be created when reacting to everyday situations and doing everyday tasks e g putting on mascara, finding out you have passed your exams. I also looked at deliberate distortion with hands. In essence, this project challenged me as it was a step further from just normal self-portraits, due to the increase of frown lines, shading and extra details.
