Virtual Reality In Landscape Architecture

DESIGNING WITH FORESIGHT

PRODUCED BY ALEXANDER SAUNDERS BA

v Modern day technology gives Landscape architects and Urban designers to create spaces and places that offer increasingly important social benefits. Virtual reality used throughout the design process can now give designers the opportunity to predict and experience designs before they are constructed in a manner that allows places to be modelled, and experienced first hand before being adjusted. The data and experiences recorded from designers, clients and public consultation will allow the potential for a much more responsive and collaborative design process leading to places that respond to the end user reducing risk.

Initial concepts and plan design

3d development

Technology isn’t the end of the hand sketch and initial plans. Quick and dirty sketching develops ideas which can then be rationalised in 3d.

Designer will often utilise 3d models to better develop designs, work through issues and form the foundation for visualisations and animations.

CURRENT METHODS OF VISUALISATION

Techniques used to create current visualisations can vary from the crazy conceptual to accurate scale models with varying degrees of artistic expression and interation. Basic images are limited, regardless of quality by their static nature depicting a single view designed to show perfect ideal. Animated fly throughs give a greater range of views however the user is limited by the flight path. Standard video games give even greater interaction however they are limited to screens inhibiting the experience of scale.

EXPERIENCE THE POSSIBILITIES

FROM CONCEPT TO EXPERIENCE

Client demos sell a designers vision to the realist especially when discussing scale and form.

3d model to video game engine Utilise game engines such as Unity 3d to input an interactive character into 3d models to turn a model from static to a functioning game.

Designs can be visualised under different daylight conditions to maximise the usability of space.

virtual reality integrated experience The interactive character connects to Virtual Reality Goggles to project realtime image rendering into the user as they move about through the space with the freedom to experience any part of the 3d model at human scale.

Designers can collaborate in early design stages to predict social interactions, desire lines, scale issues, character and more.
