SMART HOME
Efficient & Convenient
Living in the city can be noisy and stressful, the home is our private haven to destress and relax in. Lighting is the key to a relaxing environment, too much or too little can change the experience dramatically.
Inspired by hotel experiences that offer luxurious and rejuvenating experiences. With the pandemic causing travel bans & national lockdowns, this proposal is aimed at creating an environment to alleviate anxiety & stress from the outside world, providing a relaxing and stimulating experience.
To accomplish soft ambient illumination, cove uplighting is the main source of light throughout the house. However, with such large rooms, cove uplighting is restrictive and needs to be complemented with additional downlights to avoid shadowed areas in the centre of the rooms. To solve the problem, downlights flushed into the recessed ceilings act as accent lighting, eliminating darker areas.
Layering lights are aesthetically pleasing and this project successfully achieve the desired effect. However, lightings within this project can be costly to maintain. Within this project, chosen efficient bulbs and combined with technology, this project gives the desired effect, and it is cost savings in the long run.
Utilising the latest technologies - Google nest Hub, RGB controllers and dimmable switches - all the lighting can be set and changed according to preference and function to achieve a hotel experience that offers different levels of brightness & warmth through colour.
ALEXA WILSON

The goal of this room is to provide 2 different rooms: 1) a relaxing snug for private contemplation or reading 2) a home cinema experience utilising the latest in audio and visual technology. To fulfil the desired effect, small yet powerful speakers and a fully mo torised & retractable projector screen were required to transform the room from snug to cinema.
The cove lighting, wall mounted lamps, and custom-made fibre optic are lights that will set the ambience according to its uses. Controlled using your phone, the cove lights colour and brightness are adjustable to suit any entertainment scenario.
When used to watch a movie, dimming the cove & recessed lights will reveal the custom-made fibre optic ceiling star effect ligh ts. Immerse yourself into an unforgettable cinematic experience film with motorised projector screen, the 4K Ultra-High Definition projector and The GoldenEar Supersat 60C speakers compliment the JVC projector unconditionally.

Mini Bar Snug

The inspiration for the tube pendant was from a Japanese restaurant, minimal and focused to highlight the sink as a task light. Under cabinet display lighting was needed to highlight the work surface.

The display cabinet is custom-made to accommodate Mike’s vintage memorabilia and book collection. As the second lounge, this is the perfect place for relaxation in front of the fireplace appreciating the custom-made accent lighting features.

We designed a custom-made panel divide to separate the upstairs sitting room with the bathroom, powder room and laundry room.
This innovative centrepiece divider serves to create privacy for guests using the bathroom while also providing a reliable night guide light.

Accent Lights

The kinetic light feature has been designed to recreate the motion of a wave, mesmerising to watch while relaxing in the 1st floor sitting room – inspired by Changi Airport in Singapore.

Corridors Corridors
Inspired by the Padstow Harbour Hotel in Cornwall and American International Hospital in Vietnam, a fusion of modern & classic style was created to design the lighting scheme. Sleek and elegant passageways directing the occupants from room to room. Flushed LED central strip lights direct the way towards the bedrooms in an ultra-modern & minimalistic fashion - suiting Lewis’s design for the modern touches. Cornice-cove uplighting with semi-flush classic ceiling lights complement Mike’s preferences.
Skirting board lights, low level sconces, and the staircase strip lighting enveloped the house and functions as night lights.
Internal windows and glass doors have been used to capture the natural daylight into the office space and living room. The dark wood flooring and navy-blue walls –selected to create an elongated dramatic entrance – in the hallway absorb what little natural light there is, to compensate cove white lighting provides sufficient indirect lighting giving the illusion of natural daylight.

Pendant lights are stylish and space saving.“

Lorem ipsum Cove lighting is the ambient lighting throughout the project; however, the spare room comes with colour changeable LEDs as the room doubles up as a movie/sports theatre room.
In the 2 master bedrooms, the luxury hotel theme shines throughout.
Exquisite designer pendant lights replace traditional bedside table lamps savings space and adding sophistication to the space.
Classy designed Semi-flush ceiling mounts provide enough light for dressing areas. The cove and recessed spotlights are smart lights and are fully controllable – dimmable and light temperature changeable – from your smart phone or the Google Nest hub.
In the dressing room area of the master bedrooms (Mike and Lewis’) Bang & Olufsen speakers featuring Google Assist can be used to play music and control the cove and recessed lights throughout the house.
In the spare bedroom a Bang & Olufsen Beosound Edge can be used to privately play music through Bluetooth, or it can be connected to the other wireless speakers in the house for a party atmosphere.

Bathr ms

The main bathroom foliage feature wall has vertical accent LED strip lights to highlight the area.
Decorative pendants in both the main bathroom and the master en-suite, adds depth, character, and elegance.
Both have customisable lighting either using the dimmer switch or by smartphone app.
Both bathrooms have IP44 certified in-ceiling Bluetooth speakers to further enhance the hotel feel.
Listen to your favourite music while bathing.

Living, Kitchen & Dining

The living room has a Bang & Olufsen Beoplay A9 which can be used individually to play music through Bluetooth, or it can be connected to the other wireless speakers in the house for an entertaining atmosphere.
The Panasonic 65” 4K Ultra High
Definition OLED TV is state of the art and accompanied by the powerful GoldenEar Supersat 60C speakers make the perfect entertainment centre for sports or movies.
The lighting has been designed to show illuminated borders between the kitchen, the living, and the dining areas by using brightness & colours (Kelvins), and positioning of the light fittings to create beautiful layers of lighting.
Whether you are entertaining, cooking, or eating, the lights are customisable by the dimmer switches or by using the Google Nest.
The kitchen has bright cool white colour light (4000k) under cabinet task lights, soft accent lights from the skirting board. The steps and bar ledge provide enough illumination for guidance through the room and highlight the characteristic of the building softly. Adding a chandelier adds drama and finesse to the dining area complementing the marbled picture frames.
The living area has smart recessed spotlights, column spotlights, picture spotlight to highlight one-of-a-kind art piece, and skirting board lights that complement the cove lights.

Natural light is the ideal for activities that requires focus or colour recognition. In the laundry and study, brighter Pure White (5000 kelvins) cove LED strip lighting has been used and the smart recessed spotlights setting have been changed to Cool White light (4000k) to compensate natural light to help you focus. In the study room the lighting colours are changeable between warm white to cool white. With the options to change the colour and brightness of the lights in the room, you can change according to your personal preferences.
The floor & table lamps in the study are perfect for reading but provide insufficient light for more focused work.

Keeping it simple in the workshop for Lewis, white colour lighting reflects off the white wall providing better lighting as the room only receives limited direct natural light.
Specialised LED colour changeable (3000k, 4000k, and 6000k) workshop linear light has been selected for the key working areas in the room.
Additionally, a Cool White low glare ceiling panel has been used to eliminate darker areas in the room.

focus

Placing the light from above and behind reflects away from the user and objects in front of them, illuminate the surface and eliminating glares (glares can cause eyestrain). For comparison, a bare bulb causes too much reflection against the workshop top and having reflector shield your eyes but also affect glare onto shiny surfaces. It is important to understand the position of task light so as not to give distracting shadows and glares.

Introduction:
My client Mr Mike Turner owns the property and is now letting the property to his son Lewis.
Coming from different age groups and design preferences, this renovation comes with its own set of challenges to combine an interior design that suits both. Mike stipulated all historic elements – oak timber floorboards, skirting boards, cornices – will be left untouched while Lewis prefers a minimalist approach. To blend with historical design elements, all partition walls will be built in with cornices & skirting boards. Adding historical design elements such as the Georgian style columns, for aesthetic purposes, will further enhance the historical look. By selecting contemporary design pieces, non-patterned furniture with clean horizontal lines, it is possible to accomplish the minimalist style too within the historical elements.
The requirements within this building must accommodate kitchen & dining with a flexible social area for entertaining. Lewis requires personal focus space and he has requested a separate workshop. The vast amount of space in this property has made it possible to divide spaces into two zones by working around the structural element in the middle of the property. Creating 2 separate zones such as quiet and heavy foot traffic will assist in distinguishing areas efficiently. Further requirements include but not limited to, master bedroom with en-suite and (a) guest room(s), main bathroom & a small study.
The concept for this floorplan is combining selected Georgian architectural design elements into contemporary so it will remain timeless as this property ages. Timeless elegance is the mood we try to achieve in this floorplan, by doing so, we believe combined styles like so will suit both occupants
ALEXA WILSON
Ground Floor
Ground floor has been divided into 2 zones, private quiet zone & open entertaining zone.
The left side of the property accommodates a flexible and well-ventilated private living room, small study, common toilet & Lewis’s workshop. The right side of this property focuses on open entertaining space by combining kitchen-dining-living in one. The floorplan was designed to give occupants options to have their personal spaces without compromising the flow of ventilation & natural daylight and sharing spaces for entertaining with/without guest.
Fl rplans
First Floor has been divided into occupants’ spaces & guest space.
The right side of the building accommodates main bathroom, separate toilet, utility room, living/reading area, flexible snug that has an option to turn into guest room. The guest room has been made a flexible option to prioritize ventilation and natural daylight to flow into the building. Loft style sleeping arrangements was designed to create levels within the interior, it provides privacy, natural daylight and ventilation.

Foyer

The foyer design separates the entrance of the home and the living area while allowing in natural light. An Accordion glass door to the left of the foyer is there to divide the living room and the hallway while still allowing the light in and when open fresh air.
Workshop Study
The workstation has been placed in front of the window to provide as much natural light as possible. Lewis has been allocated ample space for his workshop and combined office station.

Mike’s study room receives natural light into the space by creating an opening parallel to the external windows, illuminating the corridor and the internal study room

Contemporary Chesterfield inspired sofas dominate the living space using masculine tones. Wood carved Georgian inspired columns divide zones (not structural), to complement the historical aspect of the design. The fireplace surround is inspired by the local redbrick buildings. A small bar has been fitted into the void area for entertaining. The accordion glass door can shut for privacy or opened to a brighter and airier space for entertaining.

Minimalistic carpentry work flows horizontally throughout the room seamlessly connecting shelving, seating, and the kitchen staircase. The bench seating offers storage for practicality

Dining

The Kitchen has a little tea-time nook, designed for cooking inspiration this area will house the cookbook collection.
The cabinetry work of the kitchen is a light shade of blueish/ grey in contrast with the dark woods of the living area, again highlighting the zones of the open place living space.

The fridge has been placed in between the dining & cooking area allowing convenient access from both sides of the space. Round dining table to fit into the awkward area from structural staircase. The allowance between the island & cooking area is 1200mm, giving it enough space for 2 people to cook at the same time. The breakfast bar is in between the living & dining area on the same height as the kitchen’s island/worktop to emphasize the inclusivity.

Placing 2 common toilets on both sides of ground floor allows more functionality to the two separated areas and provides convenience. Inspired by lace market, lace wallpaper was well used in the Nottingham Georgian era.
Toilets

Rotatable artistic partition panels have been used as an artistic design piece and to obscure vision from the main bathrooms entrance. Main bathroom centrepiece is a cast iron vintage bathtub with a vertical garden.

Flexible guest room/snug room on the first floor comes with seamless flushed doors to blend in with the surrounding walls. The doors fully open when the room is not occupied thus allowing daylight & ventilation.
When the room is in use, and privacy is required, the doors are shut seamlessly blending in with the walls

Private Living Room
Private living room is flexible social or personal space that gives the options to both Lewis & Mike to have separate entertaining spaces. Instead of a solid wall blocking natural sunlight from 2 windows, a curtain wall with glass sliding door will allow natural light & ventilation to pour into the building thus it will not make the building feel enclosed or claustrophobic. This room has been kept minimal by making it clutter-free, however, bringing in the historical design elements by installing wainscoting , it frames the faces of the wall, adding new dimension and depth to the room.

Bedrooms

Inspired by studio loft style, the floor has been raised by 400mm for the sleeping areas while the dressing/study areas are at the structural floor. The elevation is to provide separate living spaces within the bedrooms. The loft style design for bedrooms are combined with customized wardrobes and study/dressing areas, keeping it minimalistic and masculine, using muted tones allows for subtle pop of colours from objects to come alive in the room.

Module 2: Space Planning
Workshop:
The breakfast bar has moved in between living & dining area and is on same level as the kitchen’s island/worktop to emphasize the inclusivity - concept 3’s design for the breakfast bar was tucked into a corner and that will cause a separation from everyone else during entertaining. Kitchen floor to ceiling height is 2634mm, minimum reach height of average man is 2060mm. Concept 1’s dining area is too spacious creating an emptiness feeling, concept 2’s is cosy with a smaller kitchen and concept 3 had banquette style seating. I find banquette seating unsuitable and impractical and the area for dining is also quite tight and restrictive, therefore, Choosing a round dining table to fit into the awkward area from structural staircase.
Artiicial lights are required to light up the spaces as the original oak timber loorboards are dark in colour.

The workshop design was inspired and developed from concept 2. The workstation has been placed in front of the window to provide as much natural light as possible. Lewis has been allocated ample space for his workshop and combined office station, allowing for a personal study/work/reading area for Mike with an additional living area (the snug).

Velvet texture for furniture to create luxurious interior settings.

Living Room:
From concept 1 to concept 3, there is only 1 common toilet to share on the ground floor. Even though it is accessible from both sides of the building, it is inconvenient. Placing 2 common toilets for the final floorplan on both sides of the building allows more functionality to the two separated areas and convenience.
Creating a separate closed living room on the left & open living on the right of the building will give both Lewis & Mike separate entertaining spaces. Instead of a solid wall blocking natural sunlight from 2 windows, a curtain wall with glass sliding door will allow natural light & ventilation to pour into the building thus it will not make the building feel enclosed or claustrophobic.
This is a design layout combination from concept 1 and 2.
Lace patterned wallpaper inspired by lace market.
Overall, by following and learning from concept 1 to 3, the design has inluences of the historical aspects without being over the top, highlighting a few elements that blend into the contemporary scheme.

Module 2: Space Planning
Lewis’s Bedroom:
Solving the problems from previous concepts that compromises with Lewis’s privacy & convenience, the final floorplan has considered both bedrooms to have en-suites. In concepts 1 and 2 only the Master bedroom has an en-suite.
Fitting a small shower room for Lewis will give him privacy instead of walking out to the main bathroom, that would be an inconvenience when guest stayover. From concept 3, Lewis’s bedroom is on the ground floor. While it is perfect for his privacy and private residence, it would not be ideal for entertaining as the workshop is exposed to the foyer and is blocking 2 windows worth of daylight. This was the main reason for deciding to have his bedroom up on the first floor

The 1st floor living area has been inspired by concept 3’s design for an open area. The space incorporates a bookshelf design featured in concept 2 –floor to ceiling wall to wall bookshelves to occupy the space thus making the space look grand.
Main Bathroom:
Throughout the development, the main bathroom does not seem to blend in very well and did not serve practicality according to its space around it. Combining designs from all the developments, the main bathroom for the final floorplan consists of a utility room & separate toilet. The main bathroom entrance is adjacent to the top of the staircase, therefore, rotatable artistic partition panels inspired from design concept 1 has been incorporated to obscure the sight of the bathroom door, utility room and toilet.

All the design concepts (1, 2 & 3) for guest bedroom offers a private bedroom, while this is great for the guest, this room remains unoccupied for most of the time and it takes away one window’s worth of natural day light. To solve this, designing a flexible guest room/snug room with seamless flushed doors to blend in with the surrounding walls. The doors fully open when the room is not occupied thus allowing daylight & ventilation.
Advantages:
- plenty of private spaces for Mike & Lewis
- 2 common toilet to accommodate each side of the building on ground floor
- multi-functional customised wardrobe to dressing/study table
- Lewis’s private shower room
- Living room for both floors are flexible
- Plenty of natural daylight & ventilation throughout the house
- Big open space for entertaining as living-kitchen-dining are in one area with common toilet provided.
Disadvantages:
-Lewis’s shower room is too small but sufficient to provide convenience & privacy.
-Sofabed for guest may be uncomfortable but this room are unoccupied most of the time, it serves its purpose when it is occupied.
- 2 ensuite, 1 main bathroom with toilet & 1 separate toilet room may seem excessive but it is necessary to increase conveniences for users.
In this inal loorplan design for irst loor, it creates a balance and spaces are illed to serve practicality and increase functionality for its occupants.
