“Research as a Parametric Design Tool”

All problems of society are problems of communication…The city is a complex text and permanent broadcast. All its spaces and territories are communications. Entering a territory implies the acceptance of a framing communication… The more free and the more complex a society, the more will it have to spatially order and orient its participants via perceived thresholds and semiotic clues rather than via physical barriers and channels. Background

The photo of “El Tecnologico de Monterrey” was photographed by Ricardo Elizondo, circa 1950.

In1950, Eugenio Garza Sada founded the first campus for “Tecnologico de Monterrey”, stimulating attraction on potential residents. With time, the habitually defined, pedestrian and residential zone became an important commercial district called the “Zona TEC”.

6

Intro

On account of the drastic transformation to a commercial zone, the next thesis will propose a plan aimed on the development of a residential complex located at the southern part of Monterrey. The target site will be located across “Zona TEC” focusing on Ave. del Estado, main avenue which can be characterized by the lack of identity and social/economical inconsistency between the people inhabiting the area.

7

Site Analysis The site’s surrounding environment has a direct relation to the project. Therefore, several factors are being taken into account such as: population density, adjacent circulation, future habitants, location of already existing trees (it is not advisable to ignore them in architectural projects), etc. The use of personal transportation, such as cars, will be omitted due to the implementation of new alternate routes between locations in the neighboring area that is envisioned. The purpose of this is to encourage the use of public transportation. Being Monterrey well known for its unstable climate and extreme heat changes, the ground has a tendency to dry more quickly leading to fragmentation and fissures on the ground. This fragmentation develops a unique air flow that can be of interest to the project due to its advantages, such as the creation of natural air vents.

Research In order to create the algorithm a study involving the soil’s fragmentation levels was performed. The results of the test showed that locations that have dry weather, as Monterrey, tend to suffer from shattered grounds due to different factors such as low moisture levels, high heat rates and habitual soil contractions.

Acting circumferential tension evaluated as a factor of the intensity in critical tension and the radial length of the critical tensions. In order to input these formulas into the algorithm, it is necessary to apply a study of the Voronoi System in order to obtain a representation of the fragmentation. Some of the advantages of using the fissured system were, the upward flux of air and a more cyclical circulation of winds in the lower parts of the system.

When the soil is exposed to a continuous dry weather, particles tend to generate tension, which creates fissures. The Lee Model was used in order to calculate the propagation of the fragmentation on the soil. This was calculated by using the following formula:

Hoop stress acting. Which evaluates the following parameters:

Factor in critical stress intensity

Radial length from the tip of crack

The values of the sinking pressure were measured and compared taking into account the uniformity and the specific weight of the terrain (18 KN/m3), giving a result of 7Âş for the inclination.

11

Relation Site The terrain is fractured as a way to fragmentize space. Guided by the principles of tree and wildlife preservation during the iteration, polygons were chosen to represent edifications or green areas. After the polygon is generated an extraction is made, next an offset is performed to it through an specific measure to generate clusters, thus getting a greater light input and generating interior yards. In order to have a better connection between edifications the most apertures possible were made.

The inclination value is given by the summer solstice.

Iteration 1

Interactions are important for a parametric project due to any modification in the algorithm returning interactions of the project, in which case, formal questions are analyzed, making the process more convenient.

Structural Logic

Floors and columns are generated for the structure.

Once the floors are present they are repeated to achieve the shape given by the algorithm.

Columns are created by the assigned values of height and width given by the algorithm.

Finally, they are incorporated with the floor in order to generate the structure.

Sustainable qualities

After extruding the fragmentations areas, the volume of the buildings is inclined to counteract the sun rays from the southeast, in order to provide shading. With the incorporation of walk ways to the complex, car routes are reduced, providing a benefit for the future residents and for the possible commercial areas. Monterrey is Mexico’s second most contaminated city, in order for this complex to be classified as a sustainable project important trees will remain untouched and new trees which belong to the region will be incorporated.

Conclusion

Applying crack parameters an optimization of people circulation across a complex, made up of three types of land (commercial, residential and commercial/office), was achieved. The implementation of green areas contributed to the social interaction and to communal living, acting as a deferent on violence. We realized that the Parametric Architecture isn’t all about creating elaborate geometries; rational approaches can also be achieved with parametric tools that enable us to be more efficient during the design process.
