Lent Term: March 2025 Freedom to Flourish

From the Head
Grimston Cup
The annual cross-country squad competition was a great afternoon of endurance and tenacity from all who took part, as well as a brilliant display of camaraderie, as pupils cheered on and encouraged their squad mates to complete the course.
It was wonderful to see pupils pushing themselves to the limit whilst being supported and cheered on by their fellow pupils and parents alike.
In the end, it was a substantial victory across the Forms for Meads, who came out on top to lift the trophy!

Is it really mere coincidence that the Grimston Cup seems so aptly named?! This iconic annual event at Aldro always seems to evoke, in both nature and nomenclature, a sense of the grim determination required of pupils and staff alike to reach the end of a busy term! Perhaps we all now share that same blend of elation and exhaustion as we cross the finish line into the Easter holidays beyond.
Along the course, we have enjoyed many highlights from the landscape that is the Aldro Lent term. The Middle School production of Frozen enchanted us all, whilst our girls and boys have achieved outstanding success on the sports fields. The girls triumphed in both the IAPS netball and the regional ECB indoor cricket competition, while the boys claimed victory in the U12 and U13 Rugby Sevens at Farleigh before topping their group at Rosslyn Park. These pages chronicle these achievements and much more besides.

Science Week
Aldro embraced Science Week 2025 with its theme of ‘Change and Adapt’. Pupils across the Forms got outside to complete activities including pond dipping, where they collected samples of any lifeforms found and recorded their findings.
For Forms 6, 7 and 8 there were a series of fascinating lectures by visiting speakers on Particle Physics, Computer Brain mapping and Penguinology.
Having reached the goal and claimed the prize that is the end of term, may I wish all our children a well-deserved break over the holidays. I hope it is a time of rest and renewal for all, especially as we reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus in the biblical account of the first Easter. Enjoy everything that follows in this special edition of the AldroLink, and my best wishes to all our readers for a very happy Easter!

Boarding Trips
Boarders have been busy getting out and about on a range of fun-filled trips, including watching the England rugby team come out victorious over Italy at Twickenham as part of the Six Nations. They also went to Coral Reef water park in Bracknell and Chessington World of Adventures.
All at Aldro are incredibly excited about the opening of the new girls’ boarding house which will be opening at the start of the summer term!
Our U12 and U13 boys rugby sevens teams both enjoyed tournament success recently at the Farleigh Rugby Sevens Tournament. The U13s final against Farleigh was particularly exciting and finished with Aldro winning with a last-minute try. The U12s were also unbeaten all day and came out on top in a had fought final against Ludgrove. This week the U13s sevens team competed at Rosslyn Park and won all of their matches (including Millfield prep who have won Rosslyn Park over 15 times in their history!) and scored a total of 34 tries!
It’s been another successful term for girls’ sport as the U13s were winners of IAPs Netball Tournament, with the U11s finishing 3rd. In cricket, the U13 girls were winners of the ECB Indoor County Cricket Tournament.

Forms 5 & 6 Production: Frozen
Aldro’s production of Disney’s Frozen was a rousing success and a brilliant showcase for the school’s array of talented performers and its skilled backstage crew pupils.
There was drama and comedy in equal measure as well as catchy, sing-along tunes, all enhanced by some wonderful set design and impressive lighting. A huge thank you to Mrs Allen and Mrs Davy for coordinating a truly spectacular show.

South Africa Cricket Tour
Over half term our 1st X1 boys cricket squad headed out to South Africa for a very successful cricket tour.
A great time was had by all, as the team got to take cable cars up Table Mountain and visited a cheetah sanctuary, all whilst remaining unbeaten in all matches!

Aldro Community
There have been some fantastic events for the Aldro community this term.
Weekend events included Form 8s facing off against their mums in a netball match and Forms 3 and 4 welcoming their parents for an Aldro breakfast.
We were also paid a visit by Old Aldronian and British Olympic rower Oliver Wynne-Griffith, who kindly gave a thought-proving and inspiring talk to the children and staff and even spent some time back on the lake!
