The Aldro Chapel Choir headed to Paris to showcase their abilities and take part in performances at some impressive Paris locations.
The Choir took to the Videopolis stage at Disneyland and then pupils had some well deserved fun on the rides and attractions.
One of the highlights was a choral concert at the stunning La Madeleine Church in the city centre. Mrs Davy said: “It was absolutely incredible to perform a sacred programme of choral repertoire to an appreciative audience. What an experience for all involved!”
With exams behind us and the sun smiling favourably on the second half of term, Aldro has once again come alive with a burst of activity and celebration.
Activity Week remains a highlight for many, packed with exciting trips, from Form 6’s adventure to the Isle of Wight to Form 8’s fun-filled residential in the Brecon Beacons, and even the Juniors enjoyed an overnight stay in the boarding houses.
Sports Day brought the school community together in true Aldro spirit, and this year’s event was particularly impressive, with an astonishing 27 school records broken.
New to the summer programme this year were two stand-out additions: a fabulous Choir Tour to Paris, with unforgettable performances at Disneyland and La Madeleine, and the inaugural Boarders’ Summer Bash; a joyful day of family fun in the school grounds.
The Summer term, for all its fun and activity, is also a time for farewells. We congratulate all our Form 8 Leavers on their exam success and for securing places at their chosen senior schools. We are immensely proud of all they have achieved and look forward to seeing where their paths lead. We also say goodbye to six highlyvalued colleagues and thank them sincerely for their loyal and dedicated service to Aldro.
As you turn the pages of this edition, I hope you’ll be reminded of the many happy moments that have filled this Summer Term. My very best wishes to all in the Aldro community for a restful and refreshing holiday.
The Aldro Independent Project is an opportunity for the Form 8 pupils to delve into a world that they are truly passionate about and which they may not have a chance to study within the curriculum, writing a 1500-word essay and producing a short presentation The range of topics is always vast and exciting.
This year, we had several sport-related projects such as the efficacy of VAR in football and a detailed comparison of Rugby League and Rugby Union. Away from sport, several looked at transport in a variety of guises (air travel, sea travel and land travel), with focus on the impact of these on the planet. Extra-terrestrial life came up this year, as well as what happens inside a black hole.
Of the 49 projects this year, 6 were awarded with a distinction having produced really outstanding work.
Aldro junior pupils shone in their performance of ‘Dragon Days’ - an exciting musical tale full of colourful characters and catchy numbers.
It was a joy to see such a range of skills from our young performers, with drama, music and comedy on show for all to see.
Head of Drama, Miss Allen said “The pupils worked incredibly hard, showing creativity, dedication, and team spirit at every step of the way to bring the work to life.”
Activity Week saw pupils taking part in a broad range of pursuits across the school and out and about at various locations.
Form 8 headed to the Brecon Beacons, Form 7 enjoyed trips to West Wittering and The Watts Gallery, Form 6 spent time at Tapnell Farm Park, Form 5 went to Arundel Castle and Three Peaks at Barfield, and Form 3 & 4 explored Alice Holt Forest.
It was an honour to welcome The Right Honourable Sir Jeremy Hunt MP to Aldro for this years’ Prize Giving and Speech Day.
As well as handing out the array of prizes and awards to pupils, he talked about the importance of happiness and connection with those close to us whilst on the path to success.
Well done to all who received prizes!
The Leavers’ Supper was a highly entertaining affair and a fantastic send off for Form 8.
Pupils wowed parents and with a series of sketches and performances as part of ‘The Big Night In’ including send ups of Traitors, Bake Off and Britain’s Got Talent. The crowd were also blessed with a performance by pop star ‘Adele’.
The end of the summer term has also brought about some sadness as we say goodbye and wish well several staff members who are leaving Aldro.
Rob Ivall, Katie Radcliffe, Sir James and Lady King, Maddie Clemmons and Sarah Evans all part ways with the school this summer and whilst it is a shame to have to say goodbye, everyone at Aldro would like to take a moment celebrate everything they have brought to the school over their time here and send our best wishes for their future endeavours.
Everyone at Aldro sends thanks to the wonderful Friends of Aldro Association for their hard work and dedication in bringing so many of this years’ events to life.
Events such as the Winter Fair, Fireworks Night and the Regatta, would not have been possible without the invaluable work done by this group of school supporters and parents. Thank you FOAA!
"From the moment Glenn arrived at Aldro, it was clear to all his teachers and classmates that art is one of his consuming passions. I am delighted that Harrow has recognised Glenn's potential and his talent, awarding him an Art Scholarship. The award is richly deserved, and I anticipate great things from this talented young man. Well done Glenn!" Mrs Fenwick.
“I am incredibly proud of Oscar's musical achievements to date, and he is thoroughly deserving of a music scholarship at Charterhouse. Oscar's love for music is encapsulated in every aspect of his performances, and it is this passion that will stand him in good stead for a successful musical future." Mrs Davy.
"Congratulations to Katie on being awarded a Drama Scholarship to Charterhouse School. She’s made a fantastic contribution to drama at Aldro — shining both on stage and behind the scenes in the lighting box!" Miss Allen.
“We cannot think of a more deserving recipient of this award as Charlie has shown himself to be a skilled craftsman, and a successful business man having founded his own business. Watch this space for more great things from this incredible young man who cannot wait to explore the bigger larger workshop space at Charterhouse!” Mrs Matthews.
"Congratulations to Rufus on being awarded a Drama Scholarship to Seaford College. A key figure in the Aldro drama department, he lights up the stage with his energy and charisma." Miss Allen.
"I can't say enough good things about Charlie! As a student, he truly stands out not just for his impressive average of 97, but for his incredible work ethic and dedication. If you're looking for a role model in the classroom, Charlie is definitely it. His consistent results are a testament to his determination and passion for learning. I have no doubt that he will continue to achieve great things in the future!" Mr Vaughn.
“Will is an outstanding sportsman who has represented Aldro across all sports with distinction throughout his career at Aldro. He is a superb footballer who plays in defence and reads the game incredibly well, distributes the ball exceptional and is a tough defender. We are incredibly proud that he has achieved major sports Scholarship to Charterhouse.” Mr Drayton.
“Congratulations to Alex on being awarded a Drama Exhibition to Cranleigh School. Although relatively new to performing, he has shown real promise and natural stage presence.” Miss Allen.
“Throughout Form 8, Florence has displayed a steady and diligent approach to her academic work, which has now been fittingly rewarded with a Foundation Scholarship. As an Aldro Academic Scholar in her last two years with us, she has benefitted from the rich programme of trips and events designed to broaden and deepen thinking. This has translated to mature reflection and an ability to consider a wide range of evidence and opinions in forming her own. I look forward to hearing news of future successes!” Dr Dodd.
“Felix has made the most extraordinary efforts over the last year. At the end of Form 7 he set as his goal an academic prize to Sherborne, committed to a plan of revision over the summer, and with steadiness and resilience pushed himself beyond what he had thought possible. He is an outstanding role model for what graft and grit can do when joined to intelligence and curiosity.” Dr Dodd.
“This dual award is a testament to a phenomenal amount of effort right across the curriculum both in and out of the classroom. In Form 8 in particular, he has grown in his ability to work independently and with focus, proactively looking for feedback to strengthen his understanding and develop his ideas. This mature attitude will serve him well at Charterhouse and we wish him every success as he accepts this hard-earned scholarship!” Dr Dodd.
“Jamie's commitment to his studies has carried him far this year. He has a keen inquiring mind and spots details others miss. He possesses a love for learning which extends beyond the subjects he offered for examination. I have every confidence of him achieving new heights with this well-deserved Foundation Scholarship to CharterhouseDeo dante, des!” Dr Dodd.
