MAKING AMERICAN ARTISTS: STORIES FROM THE PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF THE FINE ARTS, 1776 – 1976
Some of the most acclaimed and recognizable works of American art are presented in five thematic angles – portraiture, history, still life, genre scenes, and landscape. They remain popular subjects for artists today, and by exhibiting objects from different time periods together, they provide striking visual counterpoints that encourage new dialogues about who makes American art, and thus, American history and identity.

CHIP THOMAS - VISITING ARTIST
Chip Thomas’s large scale photo installations serve as a poignant reminder that art has the power to transcend boundaries, connect with communities, and inspire change. Thomas is Albuquerque Museum’s 2024 visiting artist supported by the Frederick Hammersley Foundation. In this project, he collaborates with Sabrina Manygoats to create an installation on the museum’s lobby walls to show how uranium mining impacts the land and people of New Mexico.

FOCUS ON YOUTH
Focus on Youth, an annual juried exhibition of photographs and films created by high school students from the Albuquerque Public Schools, returns to Albuquerque Museum. The exhibition includes nearly 100 photographs and short films, reflecting mastery across a range of techniques including silver print, digital and special techniques in photography, art books and digital film.

PEARL IN THE NIGHT SKY: REFLECTIONS ON THE MOON IN ART AND POETRY
A selection of the Albuquerque Museum’s permanent collection of works on paper addresses our collective fascination with the moon, and with bodies more distant still.

RAVEN CHACON: STORM PATTERN
Storm Pattern (2021) is a textile score and eight-channel hyperdirectional sound installation created by Raven Chacon who recently received the Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur Fellowship. The work consists of isolated field recordings of flying drones that were captured at the 2016 Standing Rock Oceti Sakowin.

NUCLEAR COMMUNITIES OF THE SOUTHWEST
This exhibition explores some of the constructed communities of nuclear production and activity in Albuquerque while paying special attention to uranium mining and storage of nuclear waste in the state. The exhibit also highlights the stories of downwinders, or those who were exposed to nuclear fallout, as well as artists’ responses to the nuclear age in New Mexico.

VIVARIUM: EXPLORING INTERSECTIONS OF ART, STORYTELLING, AND RESILIENCE OF THE LIVING WORLD
The works of Nathan Budoff, Patrick McGrath Muñiz, Steven J. Yazzie, Eliza Naranjo Morse, Stanley Natchez, Julie Buffalohead, Eloy Torrez, and more explore the delicate balance within nature through a variety of visual languages and cultural lenses. Latin for “place of life,” Vivarium demonstrates how painters create stories that highlight the complex intersections between humans and the non-human living world.

AROUND WE GO: PANORAMAS IN ALBUQUERQUE
From multi-plate images to today’s smartphone panoramas, the panoramic format intrigues viewers with its distortion and large-scale views. Around We Go features Cirkut prints, some encompassing a full 360-degree view, from the Museum’s photo archives.

Free event
Focus on Youth , an annual juried exhibition of photographs and films created by high school students from the Albuquerque Public Schools, returns to Albuquerque Museum. The exhibition includes nearly 100 photographs and short films, reflecting mastery across a range of techniques including silver print, digital and special techniques in photography, art books and digital film. The exhibition is free to the public on May 5 and an awards ceremony takes place at 2 p.m.

Exhibition Talk: Making American Artists

Learn about the exhibition, Making American Artists: Stories from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts , 1776–1976 in a talk by Dr. Anna Marley, curator of the exhibition and Chief of Curatorial Affairs at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition offers new narratives of the history of American art, embracing stories about women artists, LGBTQ+ artists, and artists of color within a visual and thematic structure that also features iconic works traditionally associated with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Free public opening from 1 to 5 p.m.

Third Thursday: Nuclear Communities of the Southwest

Hear a presentation by Myrriah Gómez, author of the book, Nuclear Nuevo México Colonialism and the Effects of the Nuclear Industrial Complex on Nuevomexicanos. Gómez tells a new story of New Mexico, one in which the nuclear history is not separate from the collective colonial history of Nuevo México. Enjoy our first outdoor concert of the year, with Son Como Son. Make art related to the exhibitions or do yoga in the galleries.

Lecture Series: Art and Music for a New Democracy

Albuquerque Museum Director Andrew Connors explores the rejection of European rule by the self-declared United States in 1776, when the cultural project for the new country was to decide what we were to become. Connors will consider the original push and pull between an inferiority complex that we were not as skilled as Europe, and the thrill of making something new. This lecture series is inspired by Making American Artists. Remaining lectures on July 3 and August 7.
