Olympian and Paralympian Join our Board of Directors

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame has made some exciting changes to their Board of Directors. We would like to welcome Diane Jones Konihowski, Patrick Jarvis, and Sara Pretzlaff to our Board.

Diane Jones has been the director of the Alberta Olympic Game Plan, the Athlete Services Manager/ Director Public Relations of the National Sport Centre, the CEO of KidSport Canada. Her Athletic Resume is also impressive, with placing #1 in the world in 1975 and 1978 in the Pentathlon, along with being a three-time Olympian.

Patrick Jarvis has been involved in sports all of his life, resulting in his induction to the Paralympic Hall of Fame, and he has also received the Members of the Order of Canada. Additionally, he has had direct involvement with seventeen Olympic and Paralympic fames, and competed in the 1992 Paralympic Games, along with serving as the Chef de Mission for the Canadian Paralympic team at the 1998 Games in Nagano.

Sara Pretzlaff has been on multiple different swim meet organization committees with a variety of age groups in provincial, national, and international competitions. Sara’s passion for Volunteering has led her to coach along with dedicate her time to swimming, snowboarding, hockey, soccer, and BMX.

Thank You to our Retiring Members

Welcoming new Board members also means that we are saying goodbye to our retiring members. Dr. Robert Steadward has worked to promote the development of sports for athletes with disabilities in Alberta and around the world since the mid-1960’s. Desmond Bouteiller is an instructor at Olds College teaching Business and Sport Management courses.

Thank you Dr. Bob Steadward and Desmond Bouteiller for your contributions to the Hall.

A Year of Events

Your Hall Out and About in the Province

Over the past year, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame has participated in a number of events. Some of the events have been our own, such as our 2022 and 2023 Induction Ceremonies, Golf Tournament, and Pub Night fundraiser, which, like our annual Golf Tournament, was held in conjunction with the Innisfail Eagles AAA Senior Mens Hockey Team. We have also held smaller events for our community during Halloween, New Year’s Eve, and Easter.

This past year we had the opportunity to coordinate and present 49 Albertans with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for Sport. We asked provincial sporting bodies as well as the public to submit nominations. Once all the nominee’s were notified, we held presentations in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and Red Deer. Among the 49 recipients, 12 were alumni of the Hall.

We have continued our outreach, meaning we have been taking our artifacts, Honoured Member Alumni, and Alberta’s sport history out into the community and across the province. As such, we have attended both major sporting events like the Northwest Alberta Sport Excellence Awards with Kelly Sutherland or the Arctic Winter Games, as well as smaller events like the Central Alberta Family Expo. Each event gives us the opportunity to connect with people all over the province.

A Year of Changes

New Exhibits and Interactives Come to the Hall

The ongoing goal of our collection is to see steady and healthy growth while ensuring the ongoing preservation of our over 17, 000 artifacts. 2022 saw over 900 new artifacts enter the collection as part of a large donation.

In an ongoing attempt to showcase as much of the collection as possible, we changed over 30 exhibit cases in the museum showcasing themes such as the Arctic Winter Games, the Battle of Alberta, Honoured Member Family Ties, and more. We partnered with the Canada Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Military Museums to host Play Hard Fight Hard for six months.

We set up pop-up exhibits in 11 locations from Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie in the North to Lethbridge and Calgary in the South. These exhibits highlighted local Honoured Member Alumni and sporting events.

Within the museum, we continued to upgrade signage with three new pillars containing information on basketball, wheelchair basketball, and Special Olympics. We removed our outdated press box and moved some of the interactives around to make room for a full-size inflatable curling rink, and installed a low-tech basketball interactive. We installed outdoor exercise equipment in front of the building for free public use. The addition of inclusive hands-on sports panels and a sensory corner for our younger visitors rounded out the new interactive components and museum changes. There are always more changes coming.

A Note From Dale Henwood

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame stands as a testament to the triumphs and achievements of our sporting champions and heroes, immortalizing their indomitable spirit, dedication, and unwavering pursuit of excellence. For over 60 years, we have been dedicated to honoring the individuals and teams that have shaped the landscape of Alberta sports and inspired generations to come. We exist for many reasons, such as:

-to preserve a legacy: Our Hall exists to safeguard the legacy of Alberta’s finest athletes, coaches, builders, and sport pioneers. These remarkable individuals have left an indelible mark on the sports world, and it is our responsibility to ensure that their stories and contributions are never forgotten.

-to inspire future generations: Beyond the recognition of outstanding achievements, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame serves as an inspiring beacon for aspiring athletes and sports enthusiasts. By celebrating the journeys of our inductees, we ignite the flame of determination and dedication in the hearts of those who dream of greatness.

-to foster community pride: Sport has the incredible power to unite communities, fostering a sense of pride and belonging. Our Hall serves as a rallying point for Albertans, reminding us of the collective strength we possess and the shared love we hold for sports.

- to educate and entertain: Through engaging exhibits, interactive displays, and thoughtfully curated collections, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame provides an educational and entertaining experience for visitors of all ages. We have plans to take the stories of our Honored Members across the province and to develop new displays and exhibits that will be accessible to all Albertans.

You are invited to join us on this inspiring journey. Together, we will ensure that the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame remains a pillar of inspiration, a repository of history, and a tribute to the unwavering spirit of Alberta’s sporting legends.

RBC Beyond the Classroom

This year we welcomed over 1 700 students through the Beyond the Classroom education program, sponsored by RBC. This is an increase of 32% from the number of students that participated last year.

Our Lasting Traditions program has been the most popular program this year. This program teaches students about how Albertan Indigenous culture has provided many sport traditions that continue today. There is also a physical literacy component where students get to try traditional Dene Games.

Testimonials

My association with sports and athletics has afforded me the opportunity to experience a thankful and fulfilling life journey. I was fortunate during my career to be associated with people and sports institutions that provided wisdom, support and friendship to me over the years. I am especially proud to be an honoured member of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame exists to preserve and share Alberta’s sport history. In order to continue to do this, the staff and Board of Directors are working to raise the profile and relevance of the Hall. This means that we have been working to not only increase the physical number of guests that come through the building , but are expanding our outreaching efforts by bringing the Hall to other parts of the province. We need your help to do this.

Donations are used to fund our exciting initiatives, such has the creation of traveling exhibits that will be sent to communities across the province, purchasing an interactive game for the museum, or sponsoring a classroom visit to the Hall of Fame.
