in partnership with TICKETS : THEATRECALGARY.COM 2 - 27 APRIL , 2024 WORLD PREMIERE MARTHA COHEN THEATRE
As we gather today in the embrace of the Martha Cohen Theatre for the extraordinary production of The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon, I am thrilled to share in the joy and excitement of this momentous occasion with each one of you. This play, with its fantastic charm and supernatural curling match, has truly warmed our hearts, and I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey that Alberta Theatre Projects has embarked upon over the past 49 seasons.
We have witnessed incredible stories unfold on this stage, stories that have sparked conversations, ignited imaginations, and left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of our country.
The Black Bonspiel serves as a fitting prelude to the grand celebration that awaits us. This play encapsulates the spirit of Alberta Theatre Projects – a fusion of tradition and innovation, a blend of the familiar and the fantastical. Just as Wullie MacCrimmon faces the unexpected on the curling rink, our upcoming season promises to confront and engage with the unexpected, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and theatrical expression.
The success of The Black Bonspiel is a testament to the unwavering support of our dedicated audience, the boundless talent of our creative teams, and the rich tradition of storytelling that make up the Canadian theatrical landscape. It reflects the excitement and anticipation that will define our 50th anniversary season.
Here’s to the countless stories that lie ahead. Together, we will explore new horizons, revisit cherished stories, and continue to be inspired by the power of live performance. I express my deepest appreciation for your continued patronage and enthusiasm.
With immense excitement and gratitude,
Haysam Kadri
Artistic Director, Alberta Theatre Projects
Good evening all, and thanks so much for coming to see the show! I’d like to thank Haysam for asking me to direct this wonderful classic, Orm Mitchell and family for trusting me with W.O’s wonderful play, and the entire team involved in getting this show up and running, and for their huge hearts and immense talents. It’s been a really fun ride, and now we get to add the final collaborator in you.
To me, this show is a celebration. It’s a celebration of the audiences like yourself that support ATP, many of you for years. It’s a celebration of ATP’s past, while also celebrating a new dawn for ATP under new leadership as the company heads toward a 50th anniversary. It’s a celebration of an amazing cast of Alberta actors, and of a renowned Western Canadian writer, who himself was celebrating the prairies, and the characters that inhabit it, with this play.
Most of all, though, it’s a celebration of the great game of curling. 1936 curling. No embedded hacks, no long slides, no stretchy pants. Old School. But while the game looked a bit different than the contemporary game we know now, Wullie’s competitive nature, and unwillingness to accept defeat sits somewhere deep in all of us, certainly in every curler, then and now.
Whether you believe in the devil is one thing, whether you believe in yourself is another. When the chips are down, and souls are on the line, can you make the shot? Would you even let the devil in the door if it came a knockin’? Let alone sign it’s contract and curl it a match. Can Wullie beat the devil? You’ll have to wait and see, but he believes in himself, and the rink he skips, and to me that’s worth celebrating.
