The Birds and the Bees Program

Page 1

Welcome to our presentation of The Birds and the Bees by Mark Crawford. This production is truly special in that it signifies a second collaboration with our friends at Arts Club Theatre Company. This partnership is an exciting opportunity to unite with another reputable Canadian theatre company, merging our dedication to storytelling. We are sincerely grateful for the chance to collaborate with the Arts Club, and we are confident that this partnership will elevate your theatre experience.

The Birds and the Bees also continues our relationship with playwright Mark Crawford. Many of you may remember his previous work at ATP, The New Canadian Curling Club, which was produced here in 2019 to critical and audience acclaim. ATP was also integral to the development of The Gig which had its world premiere at Theatre Aquarius in 2023. We are thrilled to welcome Mark back to our stage and to present another of his heartfelt and hilarious plays to our audiences.

As we bid farewell to this remarkable season filled with joy, emotion, and unforgettable performances, we invite you to join us in celebrating our milestone 50th Anniversary Season next year.

In celebrating half a century of Alberta Theatre Projects, we are committed to bringing you an extraordinary lineup of productions that honor our rich history while embracing the future of theatre. With each show carefully curated to reflect our core values, our 50th Anniversary Season promises to be our most memorable yet.

If you have not already, now is the perfect time to become a subscriber for our upcoming season. By subscribing, you become an essential part of our Alberta Theatre Projects family, supporting our mission to bring exceptional theatre to our community for the next fifty years and beyond.

We hope you find joy in the camaraderie of the talented cast and creative team of The Birds and the Bees, and may you leave the theatre tonight with a renewed appreciation for the beauty and complexity of human relationships.

Thank you for your continued support and for joining us at Alberta Theatre Projects!

We are thrilled to be able to bring this production to Alberta Theatre Projects, and share this version of Mark Crawford’s much loved sparkling comedy with Calgary theatre lovers. We have enjoyed huge laughs in the rehearsal room, and we look forward to sharing the follies, mis-steps and joy of these characters with you too. We can all do with a good laugh right now.

For the characters in this play things don’t always work out, but something else happens instead, that offers the chance for change and growth - perhaps not as intended, but another way. We follow them trying and failing, attempting connection but often unable to get past their self-imposed walls. We also find hope in the notion that accepting ourselves as part of a bigger system - not separate, but together, might be our ultimate salvation in the end.

Through comedy, we connect with laughter, joy, forgiveness, and release. Through embracing ourselves as natural beings of expression, we open up to more joy, more love.

I sincerely hope you enjoy tonight’s performance of The Birds and the Bees as much as we enjoyed making it for you.
