One of the most talked about things at events this summer is the moisture situation throughout the province. I hope everyone will have a good harvest despite this!

The GAHC had a great show, followed by another great show at the Alberta Dairy Congress.

The first Alberta Youth Provincial Dairy Show was a highlight , thanks to all of the organizers and volunteers that made it a big success. The picnic and awards banquet was attented by 180 people where the CAHC provided a pig roast for supper! Congratulations to Don & Carol Wright who received the Marj Atkins Achievement Award.

The branch is organizing a trip to Europe in April 2019 check the website for details.

As some of you may be aware I will be retiring as the AB National Director effective the national AGM in the Maritimes April 2019.

With that a new person will be taking over for me as your national director at that time but the election process begins much earlier. The nomination form must be in by early December with the election being held early January. Any Holstein Canada member in good standing is eligible to run and I would encourage anyone who is interested in Holstein Canada affairs consider this opportunity as a chance to be part of a great breed and dairy organization.

For the last 5 decades Alberta has had a national president, Curtis Clark in the 70’s, Lawerence Henderson in the 80’s, Dale Bienert in the 90’s, John Iverson in the 2000’s and myself in the 2000 teens. Alberta has always been a force in Holstein Canada affairs with many people being on committees, boards or developing many great cows at home or internationally.

Much has changed in the last 50 years from an organizaton that focused on sending live purebred cattle and semen around the world.

With the change in breeding strategies, the advent of genomics, embryo markets, the changing AI industry and the shrinking of the farmer breeder herds to large dairy operations Holstein Canada’s focus has also changed.

Providing the services and programs to make dairymen more profitable has become a major focus whether it be classifacation, traceability, registration, proAction, the support of DFC and supply management awards programs and even programs to keep youth involved on the farms of the future. Social media, the internet,

robotics and cattle monitoring have all changed the way we manage our operations.The Holstein breed has proved its value to dairymen and we have challenged ours to be better and she met these challenges with flying colors. Calving at under 2 years, giving over 50 kgs of under 100000 cell count milk and doing it for many lactations have all been achieved and now new focus on health traits and feed effiencies. The industry is constantly changing so we need to as well so think about being part of that change.

My favorite part of being involved has always been the cows and the people and with the major shows and events coming up in the fall the heartbeat of the industry and the breed is fast approaching and I am sure Alberta will be part of it. The ups and downs of dairying have always been there and will continue to be in the future but our members have always adapted and came back stronger with the help of our holstein cow.

Think about getting involved in the national holstein future. Thank you for the opportunity to be your voice in Brantford.

Holstein Canada to Conduct Cattle Assessments Ottawa, ON – Dairy Farmers of Canada and Holstein Canada are pleased to announce the signing of a four-year agreement reaffirming Holstein Canada as the preferred supplier for proAction Animal Care cattle assessments across Canada. Both national organizations renewed their agreement in July, which takes effect starting this fall.

“This step of assessing animals is part of our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement,” said Pierre Lampron, president of Dairy Farmers of Canada. “In this day and age, it is essential to demonstrate our world-class standards in producing high quality milk and meat in a sustainable way, and to measure how we improve over time. This agreement ensures that our industry stays in line with Canadian values.”

In September 2017, Dairy Farmers of Canada and its members developed and added two new modules to the proAction validation process: Animal Care and Traceability. Holstein Canada has been a key partner in assisting farmers to prepare for both of these modules, including providing animal care assessments independently to all farms since October 2016. The assessment is based on the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle. This renewed agreement between the two national organizations solidifies Holstein Canada’s position as the preferred supplier of proAction assessments.

“Holstein Canada is very pleased to continue our well-established partnership with DFC to deliver a key service to farmers, which ultimately serves consumers,” said Holstein Canada President Harry Van der Linden. “Our Team members are highly trained in animal observation and it is great to have two national organizations work together to deliver a consistent program coast to coast.”

Holstein Canada evaluates a random sample of animals in the herd to verify indicators of animal comfort, such as body condition, locomotion or lameness, and the state of the hocks, knees and neck. Afterwards, when validators visit farms, farmers must show this completed independent assessment, Standard Operating Procedures, and records to meet the requirements of the proAction initiative. The initiative is how dairy farmers across the country demonstrate they implement good management practices that enhance animal well-being, care and comfort.

AWARDS REPORT Lee Simanton Congratulations to Don & Carol Wright on recieving the 2018 Marj Atkins Achievment Award! Get to know the Wright’s and how they have been involved and dedicated to the Alberta Holstein industry over the years in the biographies below.

Don Wright Growing up at Springbank and later Didsbury, AB, Don helped run his parents Francis and Helen’s family farm Wrighthome Holsteins. Competitive in 4-H Don and his six sisters, Betty, Margaret, Linda, Patty, Dorothy and Gail along with niece Brenda and nephew Mike had many successes growing up. In 1971 Don along with his wife Carol took over the family farm and established their own prefix Wrightside Holsteins. For over 25 years they worked side by side running Wrightside Holsteins just down the road from Acme Holsteins and the Clark Family. During this time children Lexi, Ella and Casey entered the picture and became active 4-H members and Western Canadian Classic participants. This homebred herd was well known in Western Canada for their deep pedigrees and had numerous successes in the show ring. Some of Don’s biggest achievements included winning AllWestern Breeders herd 6 times and 12 Premier Breeder banners at a variety of shows across the prairies as well as Wrightside Melody Johanna EX 3E 1* winning Grand Champion at the PNE in 1985.

Strong cow families and high type also brought them a sixth place ribbon at the Royal Winter Fair along with an All-Canadian nomination for Wrightside Prestar Ruby EX. The Wrights also exported members from their best cow families to Semen World in the UK where Lexi also had the opportunity to work for 9 months experiencing their success. Best summing up 25 years of breeding Holsteins Don was quoted saying, “Pride and Accomplishment is truly its own reward.”

Carol and husband Don have been active in the Holstein Fraternity for many years and both served on the Alberta Holstein Association for 15 plus years, as Branch Secretary and Fieldman respectively. Both were actively involved in the local Holstein and 4-H clubs and Western Canadian Classic. Don contributed to the Calgary Dairy Classic committee for years helping out in all areas. An avid supporter of local and regional events Don continues to contribute to the Dairy committee through his daughter Lexi helping with sponsorship leads and whatever else she needs help with for the show.

year during the Calgary Spring Show until 2010. Today Don dabbles in buying and selling cows and quota and helps with the marketing of his and Carol’s successful MUCK BOOT and show supplies company Cowsmopolitan Country.

The dream of publishing their own magazine was realized in December 2004 and today Don, Carol and daughters Lexi and Ella have built a successful world-wide all breeds publication Cowsmopolitan Dairy Magazine. Taking on Don’s strong work ethic and determination, he is proud of his children and all of their accomplishments and he continues to be the magazines biggest supporter. Lexi dedicates her time to the magazine as editor and is involved in several committees including; the Calgary Dairy Classic, Western Canadian Classic and Jersey Canada show committees. Ella leads the graphic and website department while she continues to photograph cows in Western Canada. Casey’s love for equipment has provided him with many opportunities in the hay and construction industries. Today he works as an Operations manager for Titan Contracting & Demolition in Calgary and has provided Don with his biggest pride and joy, Granddaughter Brynn.

The Wright’s continue to support the industry through sponsorship at the Calgary Dairy Classic as well as many other shows and events across Canada and the United States.

Carol Wright Growing up in Vulcan, Alberta, Carol helped her parents Jim and Faye McNiven along with her 5 brothers on their grain farm. After school a brief career in banking lead her a chance meeting with her husband Don Wright. Married in 1968, Carol and Don took over the Wright family farm (Wrighthome) in 1971 and established their own prefix Wrightside Holsteins. For over 25 years they worked side by side running Wrightside Holsteins just down the road from Acme Holsteins and the Clark Family. During this time children Lexi, Ella and Casey entered the picture and became active 4-H members and Western Canadian Classic participants. Actively involved on the farm, Carol was also active during the early years at the shows clipping and helping get cows ready. This homebred herd was well known in Western Canada for their deep pedigrees and had numerous successes in the show ring. Some of these accomplishments included winning All-Western Breeders herd 6 times and 12 Premier Breeder banners at a variety of shows across the prairies with several Grand Champions over the years.

Carol was instrumental in the success of the Mountain View 4-H Dairy Club and CDC 4-H Dairy Clubs during her children’s years in 4-H acting as leader. Carol was a true ambassador of the 4-H program making sure the members stuck to the motto, “Learn to do by Doing.” She not only helped her members achieve great success at club level but always encouraged them to broaden their horizons with Club Week, summer camps, selections and 4-H exchanges. A large contribution to Western Canada came when she along with a number of other committed 4-H parents from the Prairie Provinces decided to start a Western Canadian Youth program in 1985. The WCC program was designed around the Hays Classic idea but with more components. This program has provided an overall learning experience for members between 12- 21 years of age to broaden their knowledge and skills in showmanship, conformation, Judging, clipping, dairy science quiz and stall competition. This program has provided many opportunities for Western Canadian dairy youth to succeed in agriculture while making a large base of friends across the prairies. Today Carol continues to do the yearly WCC program while Lexi is an interprovincial committee member and Alberta Chair.

Carol has always been a member of the National Convention committees a number of times and in 2016 her and Don were in charge of tours during the National Convention in Calgary.

After selling their herd in 1993 Carol has built a successful MUCK BOOT and show supplies company Cowsmopolitan Country ran out of her garage at the farm. In December 2004, The Wright’s started Cowsmopolitan Dairy Magazine and have built worldwide recognition in the magazine, website and social media platforms with their all- breed’s publication. Carol has been key in the financial and office management as well as helping put the magazine together at deadline time. Her contribution has provided Lexi and Ella the opportunity to focus on their areas of expertise and has also allowed them the flexibility to travel. Carol’s support of Lexi and Ella’s field of choices in the dairy industry is equal to the pride she has for Casey’s choices in the machinery and crop side of construction and agriculture.

Carol’s dedication to the industry and her family continues to be unwavering. The last few years her focus and nurturing personality has continued into the next generation and her pride and joy are without a doubt are her 4 grandchildren, Brynn, Charlie, Archie, and Oliver. Best said by Rebekah Mathers and thought by her children and many others, “There is no one quite like Carol, she is supportive and always willing to do anything to help. She has the ability to make each and every one of us feel very special.”
