What an event-filled year for the AHA!! Across the province for 4 days and 5 club meetings. I really enjoyed getting out and hearing from all the Alberta members. Many deep discussions were had & good ideas will be brought back for the board to review and make decisions on.
Last year’s Provincial AGM was held in Lacombe. Still the focal part of many conversations was the hockey games that saw participants from every club. Great job Central Club on a well organized event. In the evening we were privileged to hand out many awards to very deserving individuals. Four scholarships were given out. Aaron Van Steeklenburg, Alana Slingerland, Rolynn Bikker, & Berenda Helmus were all recipients & were all in their 2nd year post secondary studies. The 2021 Breeder of the Year was Mars Dairy- Gert and Sonja Schriyjver. Alberta’s President’s Cow was DeerField Colony’s Lynx Pamela EX-93 8E with lifetime totals of 140000kg of milk.
In April, the National Convention was hosted next door in Saskatchewan. Many Alberta exhibitors made the trip west. AHA was a proud Sponsor of the Best Bred and Owned and also supported our Alberta Breeders with a travel grant. At the AGM our resolution to make The Westerner Championship Show a “National Show” was passed with overwhelming support. The resolution would now move to the next stage where it was reviewed by the show committee and Holstein Canada’s board of directors. It was voted down and did not get support from Holstein Canada. At the Master Breeder Gala, Alberta was very proud to have New Mars Dairy and RockyMountain Holsteins receive their shields.
Alberta Dairy Congress held in June in Rimbey saw a great show with AHA handing out Best Bred and Owned in both the Red & White and Black & White. A judging school was hosted with Gary Vanderpost as the official.
In July, we again headed to Rimbey for the Alberta Youth Dairy Show. A jam-packed couple of days with judging, dairy science, clipping, showmanship and confirmation made for many tired youth! What
an awesome event to see with all the energy and excitement they bring to the industry. During the wrap up, the Marj Atkins award was given to 2 very deserving people…Ev & Marylee Simanton. The youth listened closely as many stories were told.
WCC was finally a go again in 2022. What a great showing Alberta had! Again, a very busy week in Manitoba. The much coveted Premier Province came back home. Points tallied from each team member resulting in the highest score per province is how this is scored.
Congrats Team Alberta!!
The Westerner Championship Show was as competitive as ever, with 200 or so head, exhibited from all 4 western provinces. The holstein and jersey shows once again proved that the quality of cattle in Western Canada are among the best. The best bred and owned was again handed out by the AHA in the milking classes.
Madison and The Royal saw a great number of cattle that have, or do call Alberta home. Many animals placed very well. Congrats to all breeders and owners. A great amount of work and dedication goes in, to compete at those levels. AHA again handed out the Curtis Clack award at The Royal to Pierre Boulet.
Alberta is very proud to have a 3X Master Breeder just recently unveiled, Wendon Holsteins. Wow! Congrats to the whole team at Wendon. Come to Montreal for the National AGM to celebrate with Chalacks in April!
Any well-run branch can only be successful with a great team. Benita and Amanda continue to do an amazing job at…all the things! I can not say enough good things about every member of the board! We’ve had some great discussions, & many great ideas have come forth from our time ‘around the table’.
Thank you, Andrew
It was an exciting 2022 ! To see everyone in person again. After two years of not being able to have a Royal Winter Fair, the 2022 RAWF National Holstein shows were a huge success! Record numbers in both the black & white (429 head) and red & white (129 head) of awesome quality showed before judge Paul Trapp. We witnessed history when Blondin Unstopabull Maple Red won grand honors in all 3 shows. Congratulations to all Alberta breeders and exhibitors on your success!
We closed out the year with a thorough and detailed budget process as we moved into 2023. Holding each other and the association accountable for every dollar of our members money is not only our mandate as directors but also something we take great responsibility for. Thank you to to our senior management team for all their work as we finalized the 2023 budget. As a member owned and governed association, we know it is important to all our members that Holstein Canada maintains its viability for years to come. Recent price changes at Holstein Canada were a necessary and responsible step in achieving that viability.
The recruiting committee for the new chief executive officer for Holstein Canada has concluded their interviews. We are excited about the prospects that are in front of us and the alignment they have with our vision, we look forward to a bright year progressing in our existing 2023-2025 strategic plan.
We recently had the opportunity to watch nationally our 3rd annual virtual Master Breeder reveal where we announced and celebrated 20 impressive farm families as they were awarded the very prestigious Master Breeder shield. This event has become a staple in our industry and it has been a privilege allowing us into your homes to share this exciting new.
Big Congratulations to Wendon Holsteins on winning their 3rd shield, is a huge accomplishment and thank you for the influence you continue to make in our industry! Also congratulations to the Breeders that were in the top 10 in their categories .
In conclusion, we will continue to make Holstein Canada evolve with the support of our members and employees. it’s very important to get grassroot ideas feedback and support! I would like to thank the Alberta Holstein branch and all the members for this support
This year Holstein Canada came out with a new standard genomic offering called CLARIFIDE, which was launched mid December 2021. This new standard offering comes complete with a high density Canadian genetic evaluation and a full suite of recessives. Automatically included with each test are A2A2 (Beta Casein), Coat Colour, Cholesterol Deficiency and Canadian Haplotypes, to help you make the most informed decisions on your replacements.
Genomic testing is increasing in popularity across Canada as margins tighten, and accurate decisions on the next generation of replacements become more crucial. Genomic testing is the science of translating an animal’s genetics into a predicted genetic value. These predicted genetic values can be used to evaluate replacements, make better mating choices, and to avoid mating errors between carriers of harmful recessive conditions.
Holstein Canada offers a Genomics Catch-Up Program, which provides you with special pricing for your first bulk submission of genomic samples!
Holstein Canada was pleased to announce a new communication tool for our customers to reach us: Holstein Canada Chat! This new tool connects our customers in real time to the Customer Service team while they are on our website as well as when they are logged into their web account. Holstein Canada Chat is available to all our customers and any visitor to the website who may have questions. Our helpful customer service representatives are looking forward to chatting in real time.
During this year’s September classification round, Holstein Canada organized a classification workshop. This was an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with classifying. It was hosted at Wendon Holsteins and was well participated. Thank you to everyone that did take part.
This fall Holstein Canada caught up with the eartag situation. Which was very good news. We are almost back to normal shipping time (3weeks or less).
Holstein Canada recently launched a new podcast called “Connexxion”. It is available on Apple and Spotify. The podcast will cover topics such as registration, classification and genomics. Our English podcast hosts are Classifier Alex Mckay and Atlantic Field Rep Natasha McKillop. Many will have met Alex with a classification visit, and the two combined give for a good, down to earth discussion on the core Holstein Canada services. Be sure to give it a listen and let us know if there are any topics you would be interested in hearing.
And more with no added fee!
A common question our Western Field Services representative (Toby Kleinsasser) had to answer this year regarding DairyTrace was: “When can I use yellow tags vs. white tags for my animals?” Any calves born on farm and destined for purposes other than dairy production may be identified with a white single RFID ear tag (outside of Quebec). Using this new single white RFID button tag in place of the yellow button tag is preferred as it keeps those animals within the DairyTrace program. If an animal on your farm loses a single white button tag, replace it with another white button tag to maintain traceability. Yellow beef tags remain an acceptable option but, it is expected that the allowable use of these tags on dairy farms will be phased out by September 1, 2023.
We are your breed organization and offer unbiased advice for your herd’s future.
Another exciting news is that the Holstein Canada mobile app call Connexxion is set to be launched this spring! This is going to make registration and genomic submission easier.

This past year things started to open up again and the Alberta Holstein Association – AHA booth was up at a few shows including the Alberta Youth Dairy Show and Alberta Dairy Congress. New breeder directories were made and sent out in the beginning of the year. Thank you to all the breeders and industry members who tookpart in making another great Breeder Directory! There are still copies available wherever the booth is out and if you contact a board member or the office. A new calendar was also made for the upcoming year, once again thankyou to everyone that took part in this!
Traffic to the website remained steady with the previous year with over 2600 visitors and over 5000 page views. We’d like to thank the advertisers that take part online, we appreciate the support! The facebook page continues to grow with over 2500 followers now. Alberta Holstein also started an instagram account @albertaholsteinassociation.
We continue to do our quarterly newsletter, now it is done through an enewsletter as well as mailed out as many members wanted to have the physical copy of the newsletter at their coffee tables in the barn, all the better to spread Alberta Holstein’s news! This is still a popular spot for advertising space as well.
As always, we ask that club’s continue to send in or post to their facebook pages their show results and event details in order to be shared and posted to the website. Thanks to Amanda for all the hard work on advertising and social media.

With two years of Covid restrictions in the rearview mirror, youth activities were thankfully able go ahead without interruption.
Every 4H Club was able to hold their achievement day, including for the first year, the MountainView 4H Club which held their show on July 6th in Olds. Also, the Udderly Unique 4H club was able to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of their club.
The Alberta Youth Dairy Show was once again held in Rimbey on July 12-14 with over 50 4H members participating. The Grand Champion Calf was Thornspyc Attraction Diona-Red shown by Kristy van de Brake of the Udderly Unique Dairy Club with Reserve Grand being shown by Eleanor Slingerland of the Green Acres Club with Kenbert Doorman Enjoya.
Youth shows also took place at the Alberta Dairy Congress and Red Deer Westerner.
After having been cancelled for two years, the WCC was held once again in Brandon, Manitoba on August 23-27th. The Alberta team showed itself well with Alyssa Congdon winning Grand Champion with Quality Genie Lauren and Levi Congdon winning Reserve Grand with Mosnang A2P2 Living the Dream. Also, Silas De Lange finished second in Showmanship. On a sad note, it was tragic to hear of the accident that happened the day after WCC was completed in which three truckers lost their lives in a highway accident near Field BC, along with the show heifers that were being transported.
Congratulations to Aalte Jansen of Innisfail who has been awarded one of this year’s Youth Scholarships. She is currently enrolled at Olds College where she is working towards an Agricultural Management Diploma, while Majoring in Agricommerce.
With 2023 well under way, we look forward to what the rest of the year brings for the youth of our province!

de Wildt Dairy is run by Kees de Wildt and his two son’s Thijs and Job. The family moved to Canada in 2005 and built a brand new dairy barn (we bought property from a grain farmer so there were no barns on site). The first milking was just before Christmas 2006. Our cows were bought from a few different hutterite colonies (no cows with high genetics). The herd now consists of 100 milk cows, and 120 youngstock.
Genetics have always played a large role in the de Wildt herd. To ensure they continued this tradition when moving from The Netherlands, the family brought over embryos from our herd there. These embryos were used to accelerate the herd’s genetic progress. To this day the top percentage of the de Wildt herd are genetics descending from the Holland herd.
Currently de Wildt Dairy is ranked #39 for LPI in Canada and #2 in Alberta, #38 for Pro$ in Canada and #2 in Alberta.
The herd has cows ranked on the Top 100 list for LPI in Alberta at the following spots:
o #29
o #69
o #76
o #89
o #94
Cows from the herd ranked in the Top 100 for Pro$ in Alberta include:
o #49
o #54
o #96
de Wildt Dairy has some impressive Herd Management Scores, including Milk Value of 11,000 -placing the herd in the top 90th percentile and Udder Health score of 1.8- placing the herd in the top 85th percentile.
The de Wildt family is actively involved in the Country Roads Holstein Club, attending all functions as well as participating in the clubs annual production competitions. de Wildt Dairy consistently receives awards through the club for highest BCA and Deviation in 1st, 2nd and 3rd+ lactation classes. The herd has been presented with the Highest RHA BCA award in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and has received the most improved RHA BCA award in 2017, 2013, 2012, 2010.
Thijs has been coaching basketball at Barrhead Composite High School for about 6 years now.
BREEDER OF THE YEAR- Country Roads Holstein Club- DE WILDT DAIRY
Henk and Lizette emigrated to Canada from Holland in 2004 with their 2 boys Niek and Ruben, later on they had another boy named Justin that was born in Canada. They started New Mars Dairy a few miles west of Millet Alberta. Today Niek and his wife Mikayla & Ruben are involved in learning, working, and taking care of the dairy. Justin is still in high school and helps out on the farm in his spare time.
Currently New Mars operates with 5 full time hired help they milk 400 cows and farm 1200 acres of land. They grow corn, barley, and alfalfa on those 1200 acres to provide enough feed for the year.
New Mars has currenty 15 home bred cows in the herd over 100,000kg of milk, one of those cows is the 10 year old NEW MARS FEVER BEYONCE EX-90-6E, who has produced over 135,000 kg milk. Another mentionable cow is NEW MARS DENISON EARNMART VG-88 who is producing over 165,000 kg of milk.
Every year New Mars Dairy shows some cows at the local club show in Millet where they have a great time with friends and family. NEW MARS TATOO ARALUEN owned with Mosnang won 2nd in Junior 3 class at the Westerner Dairy Show in Red Deer, she is as well an amazing young cow that stands out to the Schrijver family.
The whole herd is purebred and they are using 50% high type proven sires, the other 50% is high type genomic sires, bottom end is bred to Angus.
Registration and classification is very important for New Mars for their own use and mating program also to get reliable numbers on sires.
The Schrijver family is honoured to be nominated by the Northern Alberta Holstein Club for the breeder of the year award. Last year they won the Master Breeder Shield which was a great time for them at the convention in Saskatoon, thanks to Holstein Canada and Sask Holstein they had an unforgettable experience with family and friends.
In June we showed at the Alberta Dairy Congress where we had 1st Jr. Breeders herd and were Junior Premier Breeder. Next was the CAHC Mid-Summer Classic where Wyatt and Adair also had their first 4-H Achievement day. Mosnang Believe in me was Reserve Champion that day.
In July the kids once again showed their 4-H animals at the Alberta Youth Dairy Show. We are lucky that it is close to home being in Rimbey!
Mosnang Holsteins started in 1980 when Heini & Ruth emigrated from Switzerland to the Rimbey area. Now their oldest son Markus and his wife Amanda along with their four kids, Wyatt, Adair, Georgia & Sawyer take care of the day to day operation of the farm. We are milking around 110 cows in a step up parlour. We make all of our own silage (barley, haylage, corn) and buy in our dry hay and straw.
In 2022, we had 24 VG 2 Year Olds, 9 VG-86 and 1 VG-88 in the US. We were also very proud to achieve our first EX-95 classification with Mosnang Solomon Liquify in the summer of 2022after she was sold to Westcoast Holsteins. Our herd classification is now 9 ME- 10 EX- 83 VG- 24GP.
We had several Superior and Longtime Production awards throughout the year and 7 Star Brood Cows, 1 CAHC production winner with Mosnang Wickham Ladybug, BCA 315-498-312. As well we had 1 Super 4 Award from Mosnang Doorman Lady Love. Our current RHA BCA is 226-263-233.
We continue to work towards our 1st Master Breeder Shield as we have been in the top 10 in our category for 5 years now!
2022 was a big year at the shows, as we went to a lot of them throughout Western Canada! Starting with the National Convention in Saskatoon where we had Jr. Bred & Owned Champion with Mosnang Miranda Lambert. We also bred 3 class winners there, Mosnang Little Sister, Mosnang Unix Lipstick & Mosnang Unstopabull Karma (owned with Lucky Hill & Lovholm).
In August we sent 4 heifers out to Manitoba for Team Alberta at WCC, the kids did a great job with their animals throughout the week and Levi & Alyssa Congdon ended up with Grand and Reserve Champion with Quality Genie Lauren and Mosnang A2P2 Living the Dream. Nicole Verhoef was 1st in her class with Mosnang Miranda Lambert. If things had gone as planned the heifers would have met us out in BC as we were showing at the Interior Provincial Exhibition in Armstrong that week. Sadly, the liner was involved in a collision on the way out to BC, as many of you know, and the heifers were lost in the accident along with the lives of the drivers. It was devestating news to get the day we were packing up the trailer to head out, but we were committed to making the trip and still managed to make the best of the show. Our kids had fun showing their calves and we had Junior Champion with our Holstein, Mosnang Chief Darla & Jersey, Mosnang Dell Never Give Up. While it was difficult it was also amazing to see the resillience of Team BC and the BC breeders as they still made the show happen and were able to spend time together following the accident.
In October Mosnang Bred animals were shown down in Madison at the World Dairy Expo. Mosnang Unix Lipstick and her dam Mosnang Solomon Liquify placed 3rd & 5th in their classes, which was exciting to watch! A partnership cow we own with Crestomere and Stanhope Wedgwood also placed well in the Jr. 3 class, Crestomere Sidekick Valkyrie. She was also Grand Champion at the Vancouver Island Show this summer.
Later in October at the Westerner Dairy Showcase Mosnang Chief Darla (owned with Garritt Schmidt, WI) did well once again winning Reserve Junior Champion. Our Junior Breeders herd was also 1st in class. Two partnership cows also did great at the Westerner, New Mars Tatoo Araluen (owned with New Mars) was 2nd in her class and Kozak Alligator Erica (owned with Stanhope Wedgwood) was 1st.
November at the Royal WInter Fair was certainly the highlight of the year when Mosanng Unix Lipstick was 1st Jr. 3 and went on to be Reseve Intermediate Champion! Later that day Mosnang Solomon Liquify along with her two daughters, Unix Lipstick and Bridgsetone Live Wire (6th Milking Yr) placed 2nd in the Breeders Herd class! Mosnang Holsteins was also 2nd Premier Breeder at the Royal. An unbelievable experience! A huge thank you to Westcoast Holsteins for taking such great care of these cows and getting them to this show level!
With the great show results in the fall we also had several nominations, 8 bred or owned All-Westerns, 3 All-American and 5 All-Canadian nominations.
A high numers cow we sold a few years back, Mosnang Jacoby Legendairy also produced a son that we co-bred with Blondin Sires that went into AI, Blondin Legend. It is exciting seeing this line of breeding doing well.
Markus is a director on the Central Club and is on the organizing committee for the Westerner Dairy Showcase. As well he is an official judge and was able to get away in April to judge the California State Show.
Heini finished his term with Alberta Milk in 2022 , he has dedicated a lot of years of service to the organization and enjoyed it greatly! Amanda is on the staff for Alberta Holstein as the Social media /Publication rep. We are also becoming more involved with the Udderly Unique 4-H Dairy Club as our kids get older! Markus also continues to be a mentor for the Alberta WCC team.
In a year that had some extreme highs and lows, we’d like to thank the Central Club for the nomination for Breeder of the Year, it is an honour!
Happy Cow Dairy started in 1999 when Kees and Miranda Verhoef immigrated from the Netherlands in the same year. They purchased a farm with a herd consisting of Holsteins and Brown Swiss cows from the Aare (Holstein) and Kama (Brown Swiss) prefix going back to Lausen Dairy (Scotchman prefix). They started crossbreeding in 2000 because it was difficult to find suitable Brown Swiss semen and because of the desire to reach higher components.
Kees and Miranda have 3 children; Simon (23), Robin (21) and Nicole (17). They are all involved in the farm around work and school.
We have a few influential and favorite cow families: Aare Megabuck Renate VG85 was one of the 45 cows we purchased with the farm when we started farming in Canada. When we relocated in 2002 to a newer and larger dairy farm down the road, we took our cows with us, but sold all our youngstock to make the move happen. While we were still milking offspring from Renate who clearly transmitted milk and longevity, we later purchased offspring of some of the young stock we previously sold in our move to our current farm. Ten Brummelhuis Dairy sold us two crossbred grand daughters of Renate from one of the animals we sold to them eight years earlier: Brummelhuis Jordan Rammer VG87 and Brummelhuis Firelight Rabber VG87. We kept a bull out of Rabber who bred offspring that is still in our barn today. There are also promising heifers in the youngstock barn that go back to Renate.
In 2000 we purchased from the only Brown Swiss herd in Alberta (Bob Galloway in Cochrane) a pregnant heifer: Pleasant View Lacy GP81. Although the first couple generations did not radiate perfection, the strong cows out of this family did not
fail to impress. Out of this family we have bred multiple Very Goods and an EX-90-2E cow. Many of the animals still in our herd, that go back to Lacy, still show the strength and power that the earlier generations had as well.
Happy Cow Rosemountain Rome VG88 was one of the crossbred Jersey cows we purchased in 2006. Two of her daughters are still in our herd and they both in their 9th and 10th lactation: Happy Cow Pickel Rhodos EX-90 and Happy Cow Omega Rhodos EX92 4E. The third daughter Happy Cow Return GP-83 was sold as a bred heifer and went on to produce 110 760 litres in 9 lactations.
In order to take advantage of the genetics of this family, we decided to collect semen from a son of Happy Cow Omega Rhodos, named Happy Cow Axl Robinhood, as we saw very promising results of the seven sisters of this bull. Two of these sisters are EX-90, two are VG-88, two are VG-85 and all contribute greatly to our overall production and components. Semen is readily available with high fertility results.
Happy Cow Toldos GP-81 was a grade heifer purchased in 2005. Although her progeny tree is short, the longevity showed. The tremendous frames and exceptional milk production has lead to high classification scores and production awards. Happy Cow Albiorix Toffee EX-90-3E and Happy Cow Fever Tracy VG85 both contributed to our herd of distinction award. Toffee was a special 4H calf to Nicole and is ready to receive her 4th EX. Toffee has two promising daughters, Happy Cow Fever Tamika GP-83-2yr and Happy Cow Amaretto Taffy, in the herd and she herself has currently a lifetime production of 90 000 litres as she just started her 6th lactation. Her Daughter Tamika is projected for 13 800 litres for her second lactation.
Our crossbreeding program is with three breeds; Brown Swiss, Holstein (Black & White and Red), and Jersey, although we make the decisions based on what breed we feel fits each cow. The hybrid vigor is a great help in our goal to have high longevity and excellent feet and legs. Mating programs are not
effective for our cross breeding program. Like every farmer our semen tanks are overflowing with options ranging from proven bulls such as Victorious, Dynamite and Rager-Red to upcoming sires such as Ryder-Red, Legend, and Burgundy-Red. Kees enjoys adding to his collections as he scans the choices of favorite sires by looking at health traits, very good udders, excellent feet and legs, and survival rates of 4th lactation plus. Red Holsteins are also a bonus. Influential sires are the Shottle son HOLCANM471838726 Albiorix and Ruti Appleboy CANM12076784 (Brekem out of Epic). Our herd currently contains 31 Appleboy animals (7 of them are VG+) and 23 Albiorix animals (with 10 of them scored VG+).
Highlight this year again was receiving the Herd of Distinction Award from Holstein Canada. This is based on the cows with a breed code of Holstein and 75% or more purity. Because of the purity, seven 100 000 litres cows were not recognized.
Besides working on the farm, Miranda also spends time with Alberta Milk as a Director. She is cleaver leader for the 4H club and helps with Breakfast on the Dairy Farm events with the East Olds Dairy Farmers Club. She also is a Simulated Client in Communication classes with Veterinary Students at University of Calgary. Simon works off the farm as a heavy duty mechanic but still enjoys helping out with corn silaging, other field work and repair and maintenance. Robin is working full time on the farm. Nicole is active in the Udderly Unique 4H Dairy Club and participates in the Provincial Youth Dairy Show and WCC.
Because we value registration, we do register every animal at Holstein Canada with the right sire and breed. By doing this, it does not help us with % purity of our animals, but we still hope that in the future it will be one Canadian herdbook for all breeds. We also value tools such as milkrecording, the Canadian Dairy Network database from Lactanet as a resource as well as classification, mainly in herd trends and individual linear scores. Over the last couple of years, we experience more appreciation for a correct, long-lasting crossbred cow from the classifiers. We appreciate the Alberta Holstein Assocation because of their support for the youth programs.
Our Rolling Herd Average is based on 76 supervised milkrecording cows with BCA 262–291–261 = 814. 11,776 kg milk, 483 kg fat and 374 kg protein. Our current herd classification over all our cows is 7 EX, 39 VG, 101 GP and 25 G cows making it 85.5% GP or higher.
We enjoyed participating in the 2022 Barn Cow Competition where it is so good to see that every farm has an opportunity to participate in. Nicole placed first with Happy Cow Immunity Trombone and 2nd place with Happy Cow Redstar Beauty. Happy Cow Indigo Liberall VG85 got 1st place in the 2nd lactation category. Happy Cow Pickel Rhodos EX-90 was 2nd place in the 100,000 kg Lifetime class.
2nd Junior 3yr old – Nifera Army Button
1st Mature cow – Nifera Activator Annika
In the GAHC barn cow competition we placed 2nd in the second lactation class with Nifera Army Dispute.
My family attends Nobleford CRC, where I’m currently serving as a Cadet counselor and Jen as a GEMS counselor. We were able to host a couple of school classes at the farm as well this past year to give kids a chance to learn about our industry. This past year Jen and myself also worked with a high school student from Nobleford with no dairy background to help her achieve her Green Certificate.
My wife Jen and I and our two kids Mason (13) and Makayla (11) are honored to be nominated for Breeder of the Year. Nifera Holsteins Ltd. started in 2010 in partnership with Kooy Dairy. In 2015, we purchased a farm South of Nobleford and in 2016 built a new dairy barn with 2 DeLaval VMS.
Some of the most influential cows up to this point are KOOY FINAL CUT 460 VG-87 6* who had 3 daughters contributing to her star brood points. All 3 daughters made over 100,000 kg of milk! Also KOOY FINAL CUT 493 EX-90 5*who has a lot of offspring in the herd. This year we did quite a bit of embryo work flushing Vogue Mirand Sunny Side Up VG-2yr and Jacobs Sidekick Blush VG-2yr 2x each along with a couple of older cows so we are looking forward to those calves hitting the ground in 2023!
This year we had 6 VG-2 YR olds, 4 of them homebred. And 2 new EX and 6 homebred star brood cows. 4 homebred cows achieved over 100,000 kg lifetime this year. Our current rolling herd average is 299-335-314 and herd classification since September classification is 7ME 2EX 59VG 31GP 1G.
For the 18th time since 2002 we received AB Milk’s Award of Excellence for Quality Milk Production. Another nice achievement this year was placing 8th in the province for Herd Management Score with a score of 891 and also we placed 1st as a herd of distinction in the 90-129 cows category from Holstein Canada recognizing farms with the highest average lifetime production of their active herds.
We were also excited to once again participate in the GAHC show this past year with these results:
Some of the most valuable services of Holstein Canada are obviously classification, but also I use their website quite a bit. This past year we also started genomic testing all of our calves with Holstein Canada especially because they now offer the A2A2 testing at no additional cost.
BREEDER OF THE YEAR- Green Acres Holstein Club- NIFERA HOLSTEINS
In 2022 things finally started to return to normal. Our year started with the local AGM on January 24 at Elk Creek Dairy. Elected to the board for a three year term again were Dirk van der kooij and myself Tim Hummel.

Vice President: William Slomp
Treasurer: Dirk van der Kooij

Also on the board are Allan Oudshoorn, Clarence Slingerland and John Muller.
One of the highlights of 2022, was the assembling of 41 heifers from our club area for BC dairy farms that were affected by the major flooding once the highway opened. These heifers were distributed to 11 different farms in the Abbotsford area.
The following is a thank you from Richard Bosma whose farm was effected and helped with the coordination to distribute the cattle.
The Club once again hosted an awards night at the Coast Hotel on March 25,2022. There was an excellent turn out and the evening was enjoyed by all. If you have trophies at your farm please contact John Muller for pick up.
In February the provincial AGM was hosted by Central Club and held at the Best Western in Lacombe. At the AB AGM Andrew Wildeboer remained as President and Tim Hummel vice-president.
In April the Holstein Canada AGM was in Saskatoon host by the Saskatchewan branch those who attended were treated to a great event.
May saw the return of our local show at the Exhibition in Lethbridge. Thankyou to all the exhibitors for coming out to put on a good show.
The Barn Cow Competition was held in early September. This award recognized those cows in a breeder’s barn who have never been shown but these animals are an integral part to the success of any farm. There were four classes in this competition congratulations to Deerfield Colony, Decoy (van der Kooij) Holsteins and Diamondpark Dairy for winning their respective classes. Vanderkooij Dairy hosted a BBQ at the farm in conjunction with an open house to announce the winners. Thankyou to Diamond Nutrition, Dirk VDK JR. and Shurgain, Ben Reimer for sponsoring the food and Westgen for the beverages. Jan Vandebrake was the judge and went to approximately 17 farms over 2 days with about 75 cows entered.
The Green Acres Holstein Club is pleased to announce that Nifera Holsteins (Ard and Jenifer Vanderkooij) as our nominee for the Alberta Holstein Association Breeder of the Year award. They also have our clubs nomination for the Alberta Holstein Association President’s Cow award with Rietben Lis Royale. Good luck at the provincial level in February.
I would also like to extend invitation to everyone to attend the Alberta Holstein Association AGM hosted by the Country Roads Holstein Club, Friday, February 10 in Westlock.
Thank you to Justin and the rest of the Green Acres board for all the work done throughout the year. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact any one of the board members.
The Country Roads Holstein Club is glad to be able to be hosting events once again in 2022.
This year we had the honour of supporting two youth shows. We sponsored the Alberta Youth Dairy Show and the junior show at the Alberta Dairy Congress.
After not hosting a Christmas Party for 3 years, our club was able to once again host this past year. We were lucky to have 60 people attend the event and presented our annual production, classification and forage awards. This was a great opportunity for everyone to catch up and recognize the accomplishments of our members. Congratulations to our club Breeder of the Year, de Wildt Dairy and our President’s Club Cow Skycrest Defiant Last Call EX-94-3E owned by Skycrest Holsteins.
We would also like to recognize the recipients of the following awards:
Highest Total RHA BCA- de Wildt Dairy
Lowest SCC- Baas Dairy
Alfalfa Silage Sample- Unique Valleystream Genetics
Barley Silage Sample- Unique Valleystream Genetics
Corn Silage Sample- Baas Dairy
We are excited to be hosting the Alberta Holstein Association AGM on February 10th at the Westlock Inn & Conference Centre and are looking forward to catching up with everyone.
As another year comes to a close, we look back at the year past in delight at all we’ve been able to do. Our year was filled with in person events that were great successes.
We started our year in Stettler at Marsfield where we held our AGM in the barn office. This was followed by a tour of the barns where we took in all the renovations Gert and Sonya were making to the facilities. It was here that Marsfield Denzel Kimmey was named our Presidents Club Cow and Gert and Sonya Schrijver were named our Breeder of the Year.
Two weeks later we had the privilege of hosting the Alberta Holstein Association AGM. Meetings and Banquets were held at the Lacombe Memorial Center. Ambitious hockey enthusiasts came out early in the morning to play hockey at AllynnBrooke Holsteins on their zamboni groomed outdoor rink. Following the days meetings, a bus took the players out to clive to compete for the championship.
Our Mid-summer Classic was held in conjunction with the 4-H acheivement day. The day started with a pancake, sausage, and egg breakfast. Judge Dale Beinert determined his placings and concluded with our first class of Alumni Showmanship. A highlight here was Futurity winner Mazylake Wilson Faith who won her class as a calf, yearling, and milking 2 yr old.
During the summer Brando Holsteins hosted our BBQ and Awards followed by a farm tour. Here we handed out many of the awards from 2021.
Finally in early December we hosted a Casino Night Awards Banquet like we had done many times before Covid. We were greatful that Donna Fenske and her children came to join us after the passing of Ken who has done so much for our club and industry. Here we finally caught up on awards and are back to where we should be. Mosnang Holsteins was awarded the Breeder of the Year Award.
We are already making plans for the year ahead and look forward to what this year will bring.
In early spring we held the yearly judging day at Lacross Holsteins with the Udderly Unique 4-H Dairy Club. Three Holstein enthusiasts from other countries came to compete against us and did exceptionally well.
It was great to have a normal year, without any Covid regulations. This year we were able to organize all our regular events again. The year started good with our club member Rockymountain Holsteins becoming Master Breeder.
It was a great time at the Alberta Holstein AGM in Lacombe. The hockey game that was organized for all members was a lot of fun, our Holstein club was well represented. Happy Cow Dairy represented our club as our Breeder of the Year and Innislake Dairy won our President’s club cow with Rockymountain Super Teatro.
We organized our annual bowling and golf event with good attendance. We also organized educational events together with East Olds Dairy Farmers study group. We organized a Field Trip at 2 colonies and an educational event hosted by Holstein Canada about the economics around functional conformation. I’m always proud of the Breakfast on the Dairy Farm event, our club organizes this with East of Olds Dairy Farmers Study Group. Our classification night was very well attended and we had a lot of sign ups for the Barn Cow Competition.
To finish the year we had our awards banquet in December. It was well attended and I would like to congratulate Happy Cow Dairy, the Verhoef family in becoming our clubs Breeder of the Year. I would also like to congratulate all other breeders that received awards for Production, Type and Management, as well as our Barn Cow winners. We have much to be proud of as a club.
I would like to thank our sponsors for your yearly support towards our club, all our members for their involvement within the club, and our clubs board of directors. I believe we have a very active board that shows great leadership in the dairy industry. Thank you!
