PRESIDENT’S REPORT- Bob Reck

I can’t believe two years has come and gone so quickly. As I am completing my second year as president I look back and reflect on a successful and eventful 2017.

Last January I had the privilege to ride with Orville to all our club AGM’s. From that, I learned that each club has its own strengths which lead to a successful branch. The Alberta Holstein board has representation from each club which keeps interest and direction from all areas of the province. Last year we welcomed Joe Folkerts as a new director to the branch and this year we will be looking for a new director as Tim Hummel’s nine years with the branch have been completed. We also thank Dale for his second go-round with Alberta Holstein. His time as a director, president, and past president brought experience and passion to our board. Thanks, Dale & Tim! We have reduced the branch meetings to four a year but have found that we get everything accomplished. It also has been a treat having the president of Holstein Canada at our meetings.

Some of the events for Alberta Holstein included the AGM in Westlock hosted by CRHC. That evening we recognized our breeder of the year, president’s cow, scholarship winners and Marg Atkins award recipient. Last year’s recipient of the Marg Atkins award was Dale Bienert, the presentation was made to Dale at the Alberta Holstein Picnic in July. It was a great evening in which Dale celebrated with family, friends, and breeders from the area. This is still one of my highlights as I got to sit with Dale and write the story and history of his years growing up in the Alberta Holstein industry.

Besides our AGM and picnic, we had our six dairy shows throughout the province. Along with a 4-H show in each club and the provincial 4-H show that gave us a lot of opportunities to interact with each other and promote the great Alberta cattle and genetics.

Another area Alberta Holstein is very focused on is youth. Thanks to Lee Simanton who organized our first youth tour in May. The threeday action-packed event had about 25 youth visit 10 different dairies in three days. Everyone got to see new technologies and different aspects of dairy from north to south in our province. This was also one of the last official duties of Brian Nelson in field service from Holstein Canada. We now look forward to working with Morgan Sangster in this role.

In 2017 Alberta Holstein also launched our online store in conjunction with Agritising Solutions. Please take time to check it out by following the links on our website or Facebook page.

It has been a busy year from traveling to all the shows, meetings, and events. I had a chance to travel to the Holstein Canada AGM, the Royal, and almost all our branch Christmas parties.

I would like to thank our staff, Benita and Amanda, for doing a tremendous job and the commitment of all our directors for helping plan and execute each event we attend.

I look forward to the growth and excitement of the Alberta Holstein branch and industry in the future.

NATIONAL DIRECTOR REPORT- Orville Schmidt

2017 was indeed a very surprising year in the dairy industry.with unprecedented demand for dairy products, across Canada, especially butterfat. Fat saw many provincial quota increases some being over 10 percent. This prompted many producers to fill their facilities and many going into an expansion mode not seen in over 20 years.

With all of this at Holstein Canada much activity from fewer members resulting in a record year for registration and close to a record year in classification along with over 30 000 cows being evaluated for proAction. As a result, what started as a small negative budget turned into a modest profit thus allowing us to move ahead faster on some new projects.

With all this positive news in Canada, not all the world shares this optimism. As president, I was at events in four countries and all of them wish they had a supply management program like ours.

Mexico, USA, and Spain all have breed programs similar to ours, however, milk pricing is not as predictable. Canadian genetics are still the envy of the world and they are in the forefront at all the shows, sales, and herds in all these countries. But as in all areas of business, we continue to try to improve.

You are all invited to be part of this gala event and take in “Old Quebec Culture” with new Quebec hospitality and some of the best Holstein cows in the world. As much as we are based on Holstein tradition and core programs our involvement with our industry partners will move us into the future and we will be an important player in the dairy and genetic industry going forward.

As we currently enjoy this time of expansion let us also use this environment to be ready for the next stage whatever it may be. I know as dairy farmers you will be “United we stand, divided we fall”.

Our two main priorities are moving ahead with the new classification rewrite and developing new management programs for our members.

One of these initiatives is the continuation of our Western Field Service program bringing Morgan Sangster on board to replace Brian Nelson. At Holstein Canada having someone “in the field” is a priority going forward with our new programs which will include proAction, Traceability, and such management tools as genomics.

As I conclude my comments for 2017 I would like to congratulate some Alberta members for their achievements in 2017. Dale Bienert for the Marj Atkins award, the Don & Wendy Chalack family for the Whitey McKown award at Madison, Chad Crest for the Andrea Crowe award at the Royal and to Zimmer Holsteins for earning a Master Breeder shield which will be presented at Holstein Canadas annual meeting in Quebec City in April.

FIELD SERVICES REPORT- Willem Vanderlinde Field Service support is available for all Holstein Canada members and non-members in hopes of creating future members.

Having a field service rep come on-farm or visit with you at industry events creates a perfect opportunity to answer questions, talk about services and help resolve issues while also serving as a learning opportunity for both sides.

Field Service Reps help in several different areas including: -Visiting members and answering questions -Visiting non-members to explain the value of Holstein Canada services -Acting as a liaison between members/county clubs, branches and the head office -Promoting value-added services on and off the farm -Delivering presentations -Assisting producers with record-keeping, problem solving and breed improvement -Helping members catch up on registrations

Morgan has several Alberta producer workshops in the works for Spring 2018 centered around what are Holstein Canada, Genetics 101, CDN and Pro-Action. Stay tuned for more details on these!

New Western Canada FIELD SERVICE REP Hello, my name is Morgan Sangster and I am the new Holstein Canada Field Service Rep for Western Canada!

was fun doing the milking training with other students not from a dairy background and exposing them to this great industry!

I have been working in the dairy industry for over a decade now and have a strong passion to continue to learning and growing with it. The majority of my experience has been based around different sized operations spanning across the prairie provinces.

When the opportunity came along to be the Field Service Rep for Western Canada, working with Holstein Canada, I knew it was one I couldn’t let pass by. I am excited about the new experiences this role will bring into my life, as well as hopefully the good I can do while I’m in it! I am looking forward to getting out onto the farms, meeting all of the members, past, present and future, and being able to discuss a wide variety of topics and lend a helping hand whenever I can! So please feel free to contact me whenever you have a question, concern or are even just looking for clarification on something, I will do my absolute best to help you!

My passion for dairy started out at home, on a small farm in southwestern Manitoba, where we hand milked a Holstein cross cow and raised Holstein bull calves. Eventually we got our first purebred Holstein cow, and got an old belt milking machine so gone were the days of the stool and bucket, and things were moving up! Those early days doing chores really made me realize how much I enjoyed working with animals and gave me a better understanding of responsibility and commitment when it came to looking after livestock. After school I moved out west to Alberta, and starting working on a large commercial operation where we milked 400 cows, 3x/day. It was the type of environment where there was always something happening, and so many learning opportunities were available, it really was a great fit for me! Since then, I’ve worked in a variety of different set ups and have learned new skills from each farm. As of most recently, I was managing the herd at Lakeland College which was an exciting opportunity to do both, work with the cows, but to also work with the next generation of young dairy farmers.

Working with the students was both challenging and rewarding at the same time, as they all had different backgrounds and levels of experience to offer. Along with the dairy students, it

ADVERTISING & MARKETING REPORT- Joop Garretsen

2017 was a busy year. The Alberta Holstein booth was present at lots of different events including the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar, Alberta Milk AGM, Alberta Dairy Congress and the Westerner Dairy Showcase. It has proven to be a great way to network with our members.

At the Westerner in Red Deer we kicked off the Alberta Holstein online store with a selection of apparel and promotional items.

Hoodies are the biggest hit followed by the travel mugs and childrens items. In 2018 we hope to continue to grow the store by adding new products! All the items can be customized with farm logos along with having the Alberta Holstein logo on them. 5% of sales come back to the branch, so thanks in advance for supporting this initiative. Samples are always available at the booth but to get a full listing of what is available the website is the best place.

Linsey Whalen is the Alberta contact for ordering and she will be warehousing many of the items in Millet.

Thank you to all of the Breeders and advertisers who made the 2018 Calendar a great success this year, selling out every page!

A few web stats, since launching the website at the AGM last year,

the website has received 9000 views from 3200 unique visitors.

One of our focuses for 2018 will be to increase viewership on the website.

The Facebook page continues to be a great place to share the successes of Alberta Breeders, we now have 1600 likes with an average reach of 970 people per post. The most popular posts from 2017 were the Youth Tours in May and the launch of the online store in September with a reach of over 5000!

In the first year of its availability, several companies have taken the opportunity to advertise on the new website. And we expect that to grow as we continue to grow our web prescence. Newsletter advertising continues to grow as well. Contact myself or Amanda about advertising rates and availablility.

Just a reminder to clubs to send in pictures and results from shows and events in order to be posted on the Branch’s website and also shared on the Facebook page.

A very big thank you to Amanda for doing a great job on social media and the website.

YOUTH REPORT- Sue Crest What a great year it has been for the Alberta Branch and its youth.

Starting out in April the AB Branch sponsored 4 young leaders to participant in the Young Leaders program at the National Holstein Convention in Ontario. Chad Crest, Maaike Van Kuilenburg, Mikayla Morden and Jos Bikker represented Alberta at the conference where they took part in tours, sessions, sale, show and of course the Master Breeder Gala. Each members enjoying their experience and gaining new friendships.

The Alberta Holstein Branch also is proud to be s supporter of the Lakeland College Dairy Club. With our donation and money raised the clubs goes on trips that give insight into how our industry works and different operations throughout the dairy industry.

The first annual Youth Tour was a great success. From May 23-25, 22 young dairy enthusiasts toured 10 different farms from Legal to Lethbridge, Alberta. Much was learned and there is high expectations from the participants to keep this tour going next year.

judges were in attendance and events included a panel discussion, in-class training focusing on judging etiquette, ethics, ringmen and associate judges and public speaking. Hands on training followed with judging 3 heifer classes and 3 milking classes.

July is busy as the Branch sponsors the 4H clubs of Alberta. Each club is given a Holstein Canada True Type model cow which the club awards to their Efficiency/Top 4Her member or to their Grand Champion. This year the awards went to • Udderly Unique Club-Zoe Meinen, • Rollview 4H Dairy Club-Niek Schrijver • Moos on the Moove 4H Dairy Club-Rolynn Bikker • Green Acres 4H Club- TBA in March.

The Branch is also proud to support Alberta 4H 71st Provincial Dairy show, that was held in Red Deer where around 60 head were shown by 43 members.The 4 clubs from Alberta competed in judging,clipping,quiz and marketing competitions.As well as showmanship and Conformation Classes of their 4H animals .Congratulations to Paige Whalen from the Rollyview club winning Grand Champion Calf and Lee Morey from the Moos on the Moove club winning Reserve Grand Calf. Maryje Bikker from Moos on the Move took home the Grand Champion Showman honour with Rueben Schrijver from Rollyview for Reserve Grand Champion Showman. Aaron Van Steekelenberg from the Green Acres club also went home with Overall Judge.

This summer the branch continued to sponsor Team Alberta at WCC consisting of 27 participants which headed off to Weyburn Saskatchewan for the 33rd annual Western Canadian Classic.

Over the years WCC has grown and now consists of 3 showmanship classes, 6 Conformation classes, judging and pedigree competitions, best of three class, stall competition, clipping competition, Premier Province Competition and dairy science quiz which involves general dairy anatomy and nutrition questions. A pair of sisters from the Lethbridge area, Simone and Emma Huisman, brought home the Reserve Grand and HM Grand Champion calf awards. Team Alberta dominated in the clipping competition with Alice Hehli and Lee Morey winning their respective age groups.

We didn’t bring home the Premier Province award but the future looks very bright for this young team!

The National Judging Conference took place in Victoriaville, Quebec at the end of June with Official & Aspiring Judges, Chad Crest attending as part of the Young Leader program. Over 60 ALBERTA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION 2017 Annual Report

YOUTH REPORT- Sue Crest It is also rewarding to see our youth who have gone through the programs and are now active in the showring. Joe Folkerts, Lee Simanton, & Chad Crest just to name a few are now seeing the view from the judges eyes as they took on judging responsibilities. Thank you to the show committees for giving these young leaders the opportunity.

Fall brought us to awarding our 4 scholarship winners and this year our winners are Matt Hummel, Maryje Bikker, David Abersold & Chandler Hofstra. Congratulations to our winners of $500 each.

Finally, this November the Andrea Crowe Achievement Award which is presented at the Royal Winter Fair, was awarded to Alberta young leader, Chad Crest of Athabasca. This award is designed to recognize a young Canadian adult who demonstrates enthusiasm and dedication to the dairy industry, as well as active involvement in their community, a true reflection of the awards namesake Andrea Crowe.

The Alberta Branch is very proud that our young leaders are being recognized around Canada!

2017 Scholarship Award WInners Maryje Bikker- Barrhead, AB Maryje grew up on the farm at Mellowdale Dairy and is currently taking her Animal Science degree at the University of Saskatchewan with hopes of becoming a veterinarian one day. 4-H sparked Maryje’s interest in the dairy industry and has played a big role in her life as she has been a member of the Moos on the Moove club for 12 years.

“At the end of the day I plan to stay in the industry for the rest of my life because this is what I’m passionate about.”

David Aebersold- Didsbury, AB David is currently in his 2nd year of the Animal Science course at Lakeland College, specializing in dairy. On the Student Managed Farm, David works as the Reproduction Manager for the dairy herd. In the future he hopes to start up his own dairy farm and is enjoying the transition phase to Lakeland College’s new barn as it is an awesome experience for his future goals.

“I believe with hard work and determination I will eventually reach my end goal. Dairy farming is more than just a job, it is a lifestyle that allows you to work closely with the land and animals alongside family & friends.”

Chandler Hofstra- Millet, AB Chandler is currently in her 4th year of the Bachelor of Applied Management Program in General Business the University of New Brunswick. Part of Corlane Holsteins, located in Millet, AB, Chandler has always had an interest in the dairy industry and was involved in the Rollyview 4-H Club . She hopes to come home and farm with her family in the future!

Matt Hummel- Picture Butte, AB Matt and his family farm near Picture Butte, AB at Marylander Holsteins. He is currently enrolled in his 2nd year of the Agricultural Science Program at Lethbridge College, majoring in Animal Science. Matt is involved with the Aggies Club at College and has been involved with 4-H and WCC for several years. After college Matt plans to come back to the farm.

JUDGING AND SHOW REPORT- Andrew Wildeboer The 2017 show season has wrapped up and what an exciting year it was. Many Alberta breeders made the trek through the mountains, late March and exhibited at the BC spring show. An impressive day for Wendon Holsteins with Grand Champion honors going to Wendon Goldwyn Diode and reserve to Wendon Dempsey Prude who is owned by Westcoast Holsteins. Skycrest Holsteins had Res Jr Champion with Skycrest Atwood Diamond.

The first show of the year in Alberta was the Calgary Dairy Classic judged by Blair Weeks (PEI) and saw 74 head exhibited with Jr Champ going to Skycrest Holsteins on Skycrest Atwood Diamiond and Grand Champion Wendon Goldwyn Diode. While Mosnang took home Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners.

The Green Acres Holstein Show was again a big hit seeing 76 head under the watchful eye of Carl Barclay (BC). Van Den Pol Dairy had a great day with Jr. Champion Polbutte Foremost Freya and Sr Champion Polbutte Beau Elaine. Diamond Park Dairy was the recipient of the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor Banners.

Linsey Whalen (AB) had the honors of judging the Millet show and sorted out Kozak Millenium Morgan exhibited by Kozak Holsteins for Jr Champ while New Mars Lauthority Daisy was Sr. Grand Champion for New Mars Dairy.

Calgary Stampede Dairy Classic

Alberta Dairy Congress was again home to both a Black & White and Red & White show. All the judging was done by the very capable David Chalack (AB). Settling to the top in the black and white was Kenbert Avalanche Belize, Jr. Champion for West Coast Holsteins and the Sr. Grand Champion was Zimmer Krusader Ava who was shown

by Benbie, Robella and Zimmer Holsteins. On the red & white side Rietben Lotus Mya won Jr. Champion for Rietveld Holsteins while Sr Champion honours were taken by Westcoast Holsteins on Lookout Elmbridge Likely Red. Premiere Breeder and Exhibitor banners were won by Mosnang Holsteins.

The CAHC Mid Summer Classic was judged by Ryan Friesien (SK) The futurity winner was taken home by Crestomere Holsteins on Crestomere Beemer Verdette. While the Grand Champion was won

by Mosnang V Hero Waterfall.

The stage was set as over 200 head moved into for the Westerner Championship Classic, the biggest show in the west. Thierry Jaton (QC) took the challenge very serious and found his winners with Westcoast Holsteins winning both B&W and R&W Jr Champion with Smith-Oak Avlnche Rosette and Cedarwal Diamondback Licorice, respectively. B&W Sr.Champion was Wendon Goldwyn Alberta for Wendon Holsteins and in the R&W was Oakfield A Shampagne for Westcoast Holsteins. Mosnang finished the day with Premier Breeder and Exhibitor.

JUDGING AND SHOW REPORT- Andrew Wildeboer The Tier I Judging School was again held during the Alberta Dairy Congress. The official for the day was William Wikkerink from BC. Everyone from 4-H members and aspiring to official judges were involved. A lot was learned and great discussions were had.

AWARDS REPORT- Lee Simanton

The 2017 year has been a year of learning and adjusting for me as the new Awards Chair. As the results of 2018 roll in later this evening its nice to see the industry keeps moving forward and outstanding results have made it harder than ever to reach the top for many awards. I see clubs awarding five times as many 100,000 kg milk awards to members as they did not more than five years ago. The new standards are higher than ever as management, new technologies and great breeding strategies have pushed the Canadian cow to new heights.

As usual Alberta breeding has been noticed all over north America and the world again in 2017. It’s a great industry filled with great people and I am excited to see what we bring forward in the future.

BREEDER OF THE YEAR- Country Roads Holstein Club- SKYCREST HOLSTEINS In 1973 John & Vic along with John’s dad, Bob, started shipping cream and then in 1975 started shipping milk. Today this 5th generation family farm is run with John & Vic, Rob & Sue and their children Chad & Katelyn, with one full time employee of 10 yrs, Malcolm Smith. This spring John & Vic started the life of retirement but John still love the cattle and comes to the farm to help out where he can.

class and then Skycrest Mincio Prickles won 2nd in the 3 Year Old Class as well as the Production Award for Blondin, Sicard & Villyvon. This later earning them both All-Canadian nominations with Prickles going on to be HM All-Canadian. As well they were both nominated All-American.

Our RHA is 733 with the Oct 2017 BCA of 235-268-230.

Herd Classification 22 EX/ME, 54 VG, 6 GP

We find that we have 4 favourite families that have a large impact on our herd.

- Skycrest Juror Piper EX-91-3E 5* has 13 daughter with 92% scoring GP or better.

- Skycrest Hlight Cinder Sasha EX-92-5E 5* with 12 daughters scored 92% GP or better.

- Skycrest Oustide Lover EX-91-4E 4* has 7 daughters with 85% scored VG or EX. -Skycrest Blitz Nock Out EX-92-3E 4* with 5 daughters 100% GP or better.

Chad is President of the Country Roads Holstein Club.

This past year, from our 66 tie stall herd we have bred 25 VG 2 year olds. We bred 11 EX cows and also bred 10 Multiple EX cows.

For production we received 5 Star Brood Cow awards, 6 Longtime Production Awards and 3 Superior Production Awards. We also had our first 6E cow this year, Skycrest Royal Devil, who is close to getting her 100,000 kg.

At the BC Spring Show we had Junior Champion Best Bred & Owned who was also Reserve Junior Champion, Junior Champion and HM Junior Champion at the Calgary Dairy Classic. At the Alberta Dairy Congress we had Reserve Jr. Champion & reserve Intermediate Champion. AT WCC, Reserve Grand Champion and also Reserve Junior Champion of the Youth Show at the Westerner Dairy Showcase. Our highlight this year was at Madison when Skycrest Atwood Diamond, our milking yearling, won 2nd in her

Sue is a Director on the Alberta Holstein Branch, sits on the committee for the Alberta Dairy Congress Show and was also a committee member for the 2016 National Holstein Convention. Sue is also involved with the youth as a committee member for Alberta WCC and she is a past 4H Assistant Leader of 10 years.

Katelyn volunteered to coach Team Alberta at WCC this year and has coached the EPC Junior High School Girls Baketball team for several years.

Rob is past Director of the Alberta Holstein Branch and past Director of the Twlight Holstein Club. He is also a volunteer with WCC. John is a past Director of the Alberta Holstein Branch and 4H Leader. Vic is a past volunteer of WCC & 4-H. Together they are members of the Classic Cruiser in Athabasca.

One interesting fact about us is we hate scary movies!

We feel that the Classification Program is a useful tool that Holstein Canada provides . The Alberta Branch services that we appreciate are the Judging schools and recognizing Best Bred & Owned Awards.

BREEDER OF THE YEAR- Northern Alberta Holstein Club- NEW MARS DAIRY Fourteen years ago we moved from Holland to Canada and purchased our dairy farm, New Mars Dairy, 13 miles from Millet.

The farm is operated by Henk and Lizette Schrijver and their children Niek (17), Ruben (15) and Justin (11). The work gets done together with dedicated hired help.

In the beginning we took over the Ireton herd, which has been a big influence within our present herd. The purchase of the Malden Valley Farm cows from Ontario was very successful for us. We think that by purchasing these pure bred cows at the beginning, this gave us a good foundation to breed from.

In our breeding program we try to use the best type bulls from Canada and the US and we use Westgen’s G-mate as a guideline. With Holstein Canada, Classification and DHI, we are always working to improve our profitability and quality of our herd.

Two cows that have stood out throughout the past year are New Mars Laumega Bloom at EX-3E, 8 lactations with 155,973 kg milk & 10,171 kg fat and protein. And Summitholm Aerowood April is still working hard on her 10 lactations with 147,800 kg milk, 10,271 kg fat and protein.

Niek, Ruben and Justin are all members of the Rollyview 4-H Dairy Club and enjoy the activities, workshops and showing their calves.

Niek and Ruben also participate in WCC.

Every year we show cows and calves at the Northern Alberta Holstein club show in Millet. That is a good show for the whole family.

Our show results from 2017 include New Mars Goldchip Survivor VG88 being shown in Abbotsford, BC and at the Leduc Dairy Congress where she got the honour of Reserve Intermediate Champion. Thanks to our partners at Skycrest Holsteins. At the Northern Alberta Holstein Club show in Millet New Mars Lauthority Daisy EX 90 was named Grand Champion. Justin also placed 1st in Junior Showmanship. At the Westerner Dairy Showcase in Red Deer, New Mars Alonzo Amaya VG86 participated in the Jr 2 year old class.

In 4-H results, at the Rollyview 4-H Dairy Club Achievement Day in Hay Lakes, Justin placed 1st in Jr. Showmanship and Niek placed 1st in Sr. Calf class with his project calf . At the Alberta 4-H Provincial Show in Red Deer, Ruben was Reserve Grand Champion in Showmanship.

We enjoy the farming lifestyle, from the benefits of being our own boss to the rewarding satisfaction of working with the animals and being connected to the land. We would like to thank the Northern Alberta Holstein Club for the nomination.

BREEDER OF THE YEAR- Central Alberta Holstein Club- CHUBANNA HOLSTEINS In the fall of 2004, Andrew & Anna were married, & purchased a retired dairy farm near Falun, AB. There, they milked 25 cows while Andrew auctioneered & Anna taught. 2 1/2 years later, they relocated to Andrew’s vacant family farm, North of Lacombe where they continue to farm 900 acres, along with Andrew’s parents, Alex & Ann. Following the move, Chubanna began slowly expanding. They purchased 20 head from the Chalacks (Wendon), & in doing so, increased in both quantity & quality. Through buying & leasing in quota, Chubanna’s milking herd gradually grew.

A 1 robot, freestall/bedding pack barn was built, & in February of 2010 began operating. Cow comfort was the main focus in designing the barn, & the cows responded favorably with both increased production, & exciting classifications. In 2014, Chubanna continued to invest in superior breeding when 40 head of milk cows were purchased from Tom Hofstra (Coytee). In July of that year, the second half of the milking barn was completed, & 2 robots were up & running.

Chubanna milks around 100 cows, with a herd breakdown of 1G, 32GP, 62VG, 12EX, 7ME. 2017 saw 4 VG Chubanna 2 Yr olds, 7EX, 3ME, & 8 star brood cows. In addition, they had 36 Superior Productions & 15 Longtime Production awards with BCA’s of 285319-298 - 12 888kgM -533kgF - & 420kgP. Andrew & Anna are believers in the philosophy of breeding for type & feeding for production. It has been of main importance that highly profitable, functional, & stylish cows fill their barn. 3 prominent cow families have had a critical influence in making this a reality…

Lacross Talent Dahlia (EX94 3E 2*) was acquired as an embryo from Lacross Holsteins & was Chubanna’s first R&W animal.

She has 8 daughters, 100% GP+ (2EX, 4VG, 2GP). Furthermore, Dahlia has a number of VG & EX granddaughters & great granddaughters & has had the most significant R&W influence in the Chubanna herd. A daughter, Chubanna Addiction Deena (VG) won first place in the 2017 CAHC R&W Barn Cow Competition, & a granddaughter,Chubanna Diehard Hearts (EX91) went on to be 2017 Western Spring National & California State Show R&W Grand Champion.

The progeny of Rietben Gibson Ellen (VG88) have also contributed largely to the overall style & dairy character of Chubanna animals. Her granddaughters & great granddaughters continue to stand out as herd favorites.

Wendon Roxson Petrice (VG) has 3 generations of impressive descendants. Her family members are both high in production & well put-together.

Family interest & commitment is foremost at Chubanna Holsteins.

Chore time often includes Andrew, Anna, &/or any of their 4 kids helping out in the barn, alongside their hired man & friend, Ben Ford. The 3 oldest, Adyson (11), Graison (8), & Keaton (7) are involved in the local 4-H club, where Andrew is an assistant leader.

Adyson has enjoyed her show ring successes, as both a 4-H member, & at local Jr shows. In the 2017 Provincials March Calf class, her project calf, Chubanna Tapps Kenzie placed 1st.

2017 was a strong show season for Chubanna. They attended 4 shows, alongside show string partner, Lucky Hill Dairy. In addition to Tapps Kenzie’s success in 4-H shows, & Diehard Hearts’ winnings for the Borba’s in American show rings, other animals made it to the top of their class. ~Chubanna Doorman Vixen achieved first place Jr Yearling in both the 2017 Calgary Spring Show & AB Dairy Congress. She later won the 2017 All Western Jr Yearling title. ~Coytee CH McCutchen Suri (VG87) received 1st Sr 2Yr Old & Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion at the 2017 AB Dairy Congress. She went on to earn Reserve All Western Sr 2Yr Old. ~Chubanna Contrast Epic, owned by Wendon Holsteins, won Reserve Jr Champion at the Calgary Spring Show.

Further 2017 awards include, ~The CAHC Barn Cow Champion - Chubanna Winners Jayda (VG88). ~5th place Honor List Cow - Bienert September Delighted (VG).

Along with his 4-H leadership role, Andrew serves as a director on the Central Alberta Holstein Club Board & as a Board Member of the Alberta Holstein Association.

BREEDER OF THE YEAR- Southern Alberta Holstein Club- BENTHEMMER HOLSTEINS

Van Benthem Dairy Ltd is currently owned by Evert & Jannette and Rolf & Mary van Benthem. It’s a true family farm, located near Spruce View. Evert and Jannette started a dairy farm in 1983 in the Netherlands. In 2000 they made the move to Canada with their boys Rolf, Merein and Jos. At that time they gave Rolf and Merein full control of all the breeding decisions. Rolf & Mary joined the farm in 2009, and Merein & Kelsey started their own dairy farm in 2012. Jos is a successful barber in Calgary.

The most influential cow families at our farm are: -Namdew Rudolph Anna VG-85 9*: this cow transmits longevity at our farm. Anna was born at our farm, her dam came out of the Namdew herd that we bought when we started in 2000.

Anna has 6 daughters over 60,000L of milk, and currently we are still milking 4 of them. Benthemmer Goldwyn Emilie VG-87 recently reached 100,000L of milk.

-Altappel Formation Rockyma VG-87 6*: Rockyma was purchased by the boys with money they got from their Oma when they made the move to Canada. Rockyma transmits lots of milk and great conformation. Her daughter Benthemmer Inquirer Canama was our first homebred excellent cow. Currently we are still milking Benthemmer Blitz Roma VG-87, she is in her 7th lactation and already has produced over 130,000L of milk. One of our herd favourites is her granddaughter Benthemmer Denzel Raquel VG-88, this year she received a Super 5 production award. Rockyma has 3 daughters that became star brood cows themselves.

-Signature Jolt Janet VG-87 3*: Janet was purchased at a sale in her 4th lactation. She transmits great conformation to our herd, since she was a show winner herself. We bred 1 EX and 4 VG cows out of her. We are still milking 4 of them, and they are great transmitters themselves.

-Suncountry Haiti Lheros EX-92-2E 3*: Haiti was purchased as a heifer at the Calgary Classic Sale. She became the highest scored animal at our farm. She transmits conformation and production really well. Currently she has 4 VG daughters, and 3 of them are still producing. Benthemmer Sailing Hope VG-88 is a daughter with great potential. She is currently in her 3rd lactation and projected for 17,000L, 719kg F and 506kg P. -RF Kee Kasia EX-90 3*: Kasia was purchased as a flush cow out of Bulrush Jed Kallie EX-96-3E-USA. She transmits great conformation and show potential to our herd. Benthemmer Shottle

Kaley EX-91 was her best daughter, and we have 3 great looking Solomon calves out of her.

This year we are very proud of the achievements of our homebred cows. We had 3 VG 2yr olds, 4 EX or ME, five 1* and three 2* cows.

On the production side of things, we are very proud that we had 29 Superior Production Awards, one Super5 and one Super6 Award.

Benthemmer Jorryn Rachna GP-84 was 1 of 7 cows in Canada this year to obtain the Super 6 achievement. According to the Holstein Canada website it is the FIRST cow in Alberta to have achieved this. We also had 14 longtime production awards including two 100,000L cows, Benthemmer Blitz Roma VG-87 and Benthemmer Lheros Verona EX-90-4E. In the Barn Cow competition this year Benthemmer Loverman Maika placed 2nd in the first lactation class. Garedon Aftershock Eloise was 3rd in the second lactation class and Benthemmer Stanleycup Adelina was 3rd in the fourth lactation class. Benthemmer Stanleycup Adelina EX-90-2E was also the runner up in the Westgen barn cow competition.

Our Rolling Herd Average on 127 cows is: 12,108L milk, 515kg Fat, 385kg Protein. Our BCA is: 267-306-267=840. Our current herd classification record is 6EX, 49VG, 44GP, and 6G cows.

Rolf and Mary have been nominated for the 2018 Outstanding Young Farmers of Alberta program. Rolf is currently a director of the SAHC and is also a coach and organizer of Spruce View Minor Soccer. Mary is the manager of the Spruce View Stars Dynamite hockey team. Our family has always been involved with speedskating as well.

An interesting fact about our farm is that we do our own ET work on the farm. This way we have been able to make quick genetic progress in our herd.

The most valuable services of Holstein Canada are classification and calf registration. We believe in longevity and that the classification system is the best tool to be able to achieve this. Holstein Canada also has lots of information available about all our cows and our farm. The Alberta Holstein Association promotes farmers to focus on breeding and genetics so that dairy farmers can work towards raising the perfect Holstein cow.

BREEDER OF THE YEAR- Green Acres Holstein Club- VAN DEN POL DAIRY

“We came here in 1999 from Holland to begin our new adventure together with our 3 daughters Corien, Djoeke and Tilly. From day 1, we have been a family farm, making everything a team effort.

Gys strives for a balance of type and production in their herd.

He doesn’t use mating services and relies on his “heart and guts” when making breeding decisions.

Currently we milk 75 Holstein cows and we strive for cow comfort and health. The cows comfort is very important to us because a happy cow is a happy farmer.”

While Gys is keeping a closer eye on “numbers”, he is balancing that with his continued desire for bulls who can sire long living, good framed, open ribbed cows with good udders and feet and legs.

The Van Den Pol’s enthusiasm and talent for breeding and developing top quality, highly sought after Holsteins is quickly putting their Pol Butte Holsteins on the map. Located just east of Coaldale, the Van Den Pols are proving that when you commit yourself fully to something, good things do happen.

The Van Den Pols remained at the Picture Butte farm for six years. In October 2005 they moved to their present 160-acre farm outside of Coaldale. They started milking two months later in a newly constructed 80-head tie-stall barn. They built everything new here, except for the two houses and a machine shed. Freestall barns dominant the landscape in this part of the province and the Van Den Pols’ tie-stall barn was the only one you’ll find south of Calgary. Cows are fed a TMR once a day comprised of hay, corn silage, and a complete dairy ration built on farm in their grind mix mill. The “Home of Contented Cows” is their slogan and speaks to the emphasis they place on cow comfort throughout the operation.

The milking herd, which is 100% Good Plus and better, consisting of 7 Excellent, 43 Very Good and 26 Good Plus cows. When the Van Den Pols started out their only plan was just to “go dairying”.

Then they started buying a few better cows locally and then began investing in deeper-pedigreed cattle at major sales like the RockyMountain High and Morsan Mountain High sales.

Their efforts seem to be paying off they placed well at the Green Acres Holstein Club Show winning both Grand Champion with Pol Butte Beau Elaine and Reserve Grand Champion with Pol Butte Doorman Jazzmin as well as Junior Grand Champion with Pol Butte Formost Freya. Van Den Pol Dairy was also #66 for LPI and #77 for Pro$ in December 2016 and #63 in both LPI and Pro$ in April 2017. They received 30 Superior Production Awards , 7 60,000 kg awards and 1 80,000 kg award in 2017. The current RHA is 903.

Van Den Pol’s enjoy giving back to the community and this year decided to participate in Breakfast on the Dairy hosting over 700 visitors to their newly renovated barn with a step-up parlour and large straw pack.

In the future, the Van Den Pols’ goal is to win a Master Breeder shield.

Gys has always believed that in life one should “Do what you do good. Otherwise don’t do it. Don’t do it half-way.” It is that kind of attitude and commitment to Holstein breeding that will ensure further success for the Van Den Pol family in the years ahead.

CLUB REPORTS- Country Roads Holstein Club We started off the year with the AGM in January and announcing the 2016 Club Breeder of the Year -Skycrest Holsteins. Following the meeting we had a presentation from the Saskatoon Colostrum company. Then we were able to do hands on, skills training on calves. We were able to take blood samples, tube calves, placing catheters and freezing calves for de-horning.

February was a big month for the club as we were able to host the AHA AGM in Westlock. Thursday night we invited the AHA directors and their spouses to bingo night. We had an enjoyable evening together, and who knew that bingo could get so competitive! Friday after the AGM we toured two dairy farms; Linaria Dairy and Yoke Dairy. This was great opportunity to see to see two different style robots and facilities. We concluded the day with a banquet/awards and entertainment.

The AGM was a huge success and we couldn’t of done this without our many sponsors and also all the many people that attended!

In August we headed over to Rick and Ellie Holierhoek/Slomp Dairy for the annual pig roast.

Christmas Party/Awards night concluded our year where we presented numerous classification and production awards. Our 2017 CRHC Breeder of the Year was announced, congratulations to Skycrest Holsteins. The evening was filled with good food, conversation, and a lot of bidding on the auction floor and silent auction tables. Thank you to all the sponsors and all the producers and their families that come out and support us. Without your support our events would not be a success.

CLUB REPORTS- Northern Alberta Holstein Club The Northern Club had an exciting year in 2017! We started the year off in January with our Annual Meeting in Leduc which was an engaging event for our members that attended. In February we hosted a Classification night at Tim and Deb Hofstra’s where we had a great group discussion around the new Pro-Action measures that were coming in and Holstein Canada was assessing.

In April we hosted our Judging school at Kozak’s farm by Hay Lakes, where we were able to learn and have good discussions on how to evaluate a few different classes with our guest judge Lee Morey.

In July we had the privilege to host the Annual Picnic in conjunction with our Holstein Show in Millet. This year we had the dinner for the picnic the evening before the show where we had a wonderful banquet followed by up and coming and award winning singer Martin Kerr playing his authentic folk style music. The following day we had our Holstein Show judged by Lindsey Whalen, which was well attended as usual followed by a BBQ.

In the fall we had another classifiers night at Wassink’s dairy where another good discussion was had over some of the new changes that were coming to classifying cows, we also had our Barn Cow Award judging with the winner announced at our Christmas party in early December, congratulations to Detimdale on their cow that won. At our Christmas party we had a great dinner followed by handing out plaques to all the farms that had cows get Very Good First Lactation, First Time Excellent, And Top BCA’s in their respective lactations.

Also we presented out winner for Breeder of the Year for the province, Congratulations to New Mars Dairy for winning this award and good luck at the provincial AGM. I would like to conclude by thanking everyone who helped out our club this past year. We appreciate everyone who hosted an event, helped setup, helped make this run smooth at an event, helped cleanup, or just helped in general. We couldn’t have had a great year without you!

CLUB REPORTS- Central Alberta Holstein Club 2017 was another great year for the Central Alberta Holstein Club organizing a variety of events.

The year started out with a judging school at Sterling Park Holsteins home of the Mathers family. The turnout was good and everyone enjoyed the friendly competition judging. Thanks to Dale Beinert for being the official judge.

In July our classification night was held at Sunalta Farm just west of Ponoka, a big thank you to the Brouwer family for opening up their farm and giving us a chance to tour the new barn and sand bedding system. The Mid-Summer Classic was held in the end of July and was judged by Ryan Friesen, there were 51 plus entries including the juniors. Congratulations to Markus and Amanda Hehli, Mosnang Holsteins, on Grand Champion with Mosnang V Hero Waterfall and Honourable Mention. And to Len & Sarah Congdon, Mazylake Holsteins, on Reserve Champion. Once again we held our rail side judging for the spectators, with the prize being a wheel of cheese.

Fall time brings us to our On Farm Barn Cow Competition, with addition of new farms adding entries. Making two full days of judging for Lindsay Whalen. A big thank you to Lindsay and to Lee Simanton for taking her around to all of the farms. Rounding off the events for the year is the CAHC Annual Awards and Banquet. Around 200 attendees from industry partners to local dairy farmers and every age in between, everyone was well fed and the entertainment by Duelling pianos was incredible. The highlights for the evening were: -Chubanna Holsteins for winning Breeder Of The Year -Sylvanside Dairy winning the Herd Management award -Mars Dairy winning the Highest Production award A big thank you to our members and sponsors for showing their support to all of our events. Also a thank you to the CAHC directors who put the time and effort into organizing all of the events.

We hope to see everyone at our events in 2018 and look forward to the upcoming year.

CLUB REPORTS- Southern Alberta Holstein Club The 2017 year for the Southern Alberta Holstein Club was a year of change and great success. We started out like any other year, in April we held our family bowling and pizza night. This event is always a success with many of the club members families coming and some more mature members attending.

In the beginning of June, we had our golf day. This event attracts a lot of our sponsors and club members, it is enjoyed by all. The end of June brought the Breakfast on the Dairy which is held in conjunction with the East of Olds Dairy Club. This event was held at Boom Holsteins, the day was a beautiful day and brought out 670 people, the most successful breakfast to date. This has brought a lot of excitement for the 2018 breakfast. We had a classification night in July at Benthem Dairy. We invited the local 4-H club and had many of the members come, this brought a lot of discussion and learning

on both sides.

We once again held our Barn Cow Competition, this year we saw an increase in cows entered and hope that 2018 will be even more.

The beginning of November we held a hoof trimming workshop at ten Brummelhuis Dairy. Rob Geier and Elbert Koester presented the workshop which consisted of a slide show and then a demonstration of the 5-step trimming method.

We hope to continue these educational events in the 2018 year.

In 2017 we also decided it was time to update our clubs phone directory, as the last one was printed 7 years ago, this directory will be available for at the club’s AGM. We are very excited for the 2018 year and all that it brings.

CLUB REPORTS- Green Acres Holstein Club After a very eventful 2016 for the club, 2017 was a little less hectic. 2017 saw a continuation of demand for milk or more specifically butterfat, not only are our farms being called on to increase production but more specifically the Holstein cow is being asked to produce more high fat milk. These are definitely exciting times to be working with the Holstein milk cow.

The first weekend of June saw us host our family BBQ on Friday night followed by the Holstein show the following morning. The 4H club also held their achievement day in conjunction with the open show.

The club year began with our AGM at the Coast Hotel in January, at this time Clarence Slingerland and Gerrit Haarman were each acclaimed for another 3 year term.

Also in June, the Pol Butte Holsteins hosted a breakfast on the dairy. A big thank-you to the Van Den Pol family for opening up their farm to the public. We also extend a big thank-you to all the volunteers and sponsors for their help in putting on this important event.

In February we again had a family bowling and pizza night. It was enjoyed by young and old alike, with over 70 people in attendance.

In December the club announced Pol Butte Holsteins as our club’s breeder of the year. Congratulations!! And all the best at the provincial level.

March saw our annual awards banquet, We enjoyed listening to three 4Hers present their speeches. Congratulations to all the award winners.

We are looking forward to an exciting 2018.
