Requirements Students who graduated from high school in the year 2000 and thereafter will be required to earn a “B” average in their core-curriculum subjects.

Students must also graduate meeting the curriculum requirements in their program of study.

Check with your high school guidance counselor for more information on the corecurriculum requirements.

The HOPE Scholarship is Georgia’s unique and nationally recognized program for helping its students succeed. Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally (HOPE) is former Gov. Zell Miller’s educational program to reward students who have earned good grades by helping with the expense of continuing their education after they graduate from high school.

HOPE may be used at public technical colleges and eligible public or private colleges and universities in Georgia. The program is funded by the Georgia Lottery for Education which began in 1993.

Full-time enrollment is not required, but you must be making satisfactory academic progress to maintain eligibility. You are not required to maintain a “B” average to renew your HOPE Grant.

HOPE Grant Awards The HOPE Grant covers tuition, HOPE-approved mandatory fees, and a book allowance of up to $100 per quarter.

How It Works

How to Apply

You may receive HOPE assistance if you enroll at an eligible Georgia public technical college.

The HOPE Grant is awarded for study leading to a certificate or diploma. Many technical colleges offer two-year degree programs as well. The HOPE Scholarship is awarded to students in degree programs, who must meet different qualifications than students earning a certificate or diploma.

All HOPE applicants attending an eligible technical college must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the HOPE Scholarship and Grant Application each year.

Empowering the Workforce of Southwest Georgia

Dear Friends and Supporters, Albany Technical College is growing in more ways than one. Not only are we expanding our academic programs and constructing new buildings to better serve our students and the community, we are adding specific programs to our Economic Development training for those workers who need to earn the certifications needed to enhance their job performance.

Last summer marked an exciting time at Albany Tech as we began offering the Lean Six Sigma training to our manufacturers and industries.

As the exclusive provider of Six Sigma in the Southwest Georgia region, I know this will be beneficial not only to our business and industry community, but the community as a whole to take advantage of.

Besides being a credited program, one of the greatest advantages our students will have who enroll in the Six Sigma program, is the HOPE Grant eligibility.

Through our partnership with The Quality Group in Atlanta, Albany Tech is able to offer our students the convenience of earning a green or black belt 90 percent online and only five days of in-the-classroom training needed.

It is my hope our business and industry partners, as well as other community members, will read and learn more about our new Six Sigma program.

Our Economic Development department is here to answer any questions about this new endeavor.

Not only is Six Sigma enhancing our Economic Development programs here at Albany Tech, but our Work Ready initiative continues to flourish.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: One objective of the Certified Warehousing and Distribution Specialist (CWDS) curriculum is to create a pool of skilled employees from which Georgia companies can draw as they staff their warehousing and distribution centers. A second objective is to provide training for employees currently employed in warehousing and distribution to prepare them for greater responsibility and growth in their careers.

Skills taught in the courses are drawn from typical job skills requirements as determined by needs analyses and interviews with supervisors and managers of Georgia’s leading edge warehousing and distribution operations.

Eliminate Waste and Increase Productivity with LEAN SIX SIGMA from Albany Tech

The old cliché, “Less is more,” is true now more than ever, as the struggling economy forces manufacturers to drastically cut cost while maintaining a high quality product. Manufacturers, both large and small, are implementing a program called Lean Six Sigma to eliminate waste and increase productivity and profit. Until recently, southwest Georgia manufacturers who needed Lean Six Sigma training had no choice but to send employees on costly trips to Atlanta or other states where training was offered.

“Lean Six Sigma is a vital part of our Continuous Process Improvement Program at the Maintenance Center Albany,” said Colonel Terrence Reid, the Commander of the Maintenance Center Albany. “One challenge to this program is the significant amount of training that is initially required. Past history of the training element required extensive travel, cost and time away from our normal task.”

Colonel Terrence Reid, who also serves on the Albany Tech Board of Directors, encouraged Albany Technical College to implement a Lean Six Sigma Program closer to home. Within a few months of the base’s request, Albany Tech had partnered with Atlanta-based The Quality Group to offer two new programs in Lean Six Sigma. The partnership with The Quality Group allowed Albany Tech to offer a hybrid Lean Six Sigma program.

“Students receive 40 hours of online instruction and two and a half days of inclass training, which was tailored to meet the needs of businesses in this region,” said ATC instructor, Dr. Steve Eidson.

certificates of credit (TCC) courses, including a Quality Assurance Specialist TCC and a Quality Assurance Professional TCC. At the specialist level, students earn a Green Belt in Lean Six Sigma.

At the professional level, a Black Belt certification is earned. A student who completes the course can also sit for a national certification in Lean Six Sigma through the American Society of Quality.

“We focus instruction on five steps to achieving Lean Six Sigma: define, measure, analyze, improve and control,” said Dr. Eidson. “These steps help manufacturers mass produce a product that will satisfy all customers without costly production errors.”

Albany Tech is the first college in the State of Georgia to offer the program for credit. Plus, the course is free to students and employers. The HOPE Grant covers 100 percent of tuition. A portion of that tuition then goes to The Quality Group.

“This program is a win-win for Albany Tech, The Quality Group and the student,” said Dr. Eidson. “This same certification can cost up to $6,000 elsewhere.”

The Quality Group CEO, Rob Stewart, said Albany Tech is one of approximately 30 colleges across the country offering the company’s Lean Six Sigma program.

“We like to partner with community and technical colleges, as well as universities,” said Stewart. “The partnership allows these institutions to deliver our company’s world-class work solutions to their communities.

The learning modules can be adjusted to meet the needs of a customer.”

first Quality Assurance Specialist program this summer. These students represented businesses, including Interstate Warehouse Services, Mars Chocolate North America and Miller Coors.

Mike Clark, Operations Manager for Interstate Warehouse Services, said the course introduced new ways to improve production.

“During the in-class instruction, we performed simulated exercises that really made me think about how our company can improve processes,” said Clark. “We discussed root causes for defects in our product and then worked towards eliminating those defects.”

Clark also said many manufacturers are cutting back on employee training and workforce development to reduce budgets. But with the HOPE Grant covering the cost of this new program, employers can increase the skills of their workforce without breaking the bank.

“This is an excellent opportunity to build the skills of our employees for free,” said Clark.

The program is expected to grow as manufacturers, especially the Maintenance Center Albany, begin to send more employees to Albany Tech.

“One of the goals developed in the implementation of our Lean Six Sigma program was to be self sustaining in every facet of our lean journey,” said Colonel Reid. “To achieve this goal in a timely manner, an accelerate training program is required. Albany Tech now provides us a local resource to facilitate this initiate. Albany Tech serves as one of our most dependable training resources.”

Assessment The Work Ready assessment is administered by ACT’s nationally accredited WorkKeys® system and measures both core skills and work habits. The Work Ready Certificate quantifies skills in two areas: • Core skills assessment measures skills in Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Locating Information, three skills that are highly important to the majority of jobs in the workplace • Work Habits assessment measures work-related attitudes

Dear Friends and Supporters, Albany Technical College is growing in more ways than one. Not only are we expanding our academic programs and constructing new buildings to better serve our students and the community, we are adding specific programs to our Economic Development training for those workers who need to earn the certifications needed to enhance their job performance.

Last summer marked an exciting time at Albany Tech as we began offering the Lean Six Sigma training to our manufacturers and industries.

As the exclusive provider of Six Sigma in the Southwest Georgia region, I know this will be beneficial not only to our business and industry community, but the community as a whole to take advantage of.

Besides being a credited program, one of the greatest advantages our students will have who enroll in the Six Sigma program, is the HOPE Grant eligibility.

Through our partnership with The Quality Group in Atlanta, Albany Tech is able to offer our students the convenience of earning a green or black belt 90 percent online and only five days of in-the-classroom training needed.

It is my hope our business and industry partners, as well as other community members, will read and learn more about our new Six Sigma program.

Our Economic Development department is here to answer any questions about this new endeavor.

Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally

HOPE

Requirements Students who graduated from high school in the year 2000 and thereafter will be required to earn a “B” average in their core-curriculum subjects.

Students must also graduate meeting the curriculum requirements in their program of study.

Check with your high school guidance counselor for more information on the corecurriculum requirements.

Please contact the financial aid office at the technical college you are planning to attend for information on tuition costs and residency determination.

The HOPE Scholarship is Georgia’s unique and nationally recognized program for helping its students succeed. Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally (HOPE) is former Gov. Zell Miller’s educational program to reward students who have earned good grades by helping with the expense of continuing their education after they graduate from high school.

HOPE may be used at public technical colleges and eligible public or private colleges and universities in Georgia. The program is funded by the Georgia Lottery for Education which began in 1993.

or diploma are eligible for a HOPE Grant regardless of high school graduation date or grade average. You may receive the Hope Grant for an unlimited number of programs that qualify under the guidelines.

Full-time enrollment is not required, but you must be making satisfactory academic progress to maintain eligibility. You are not required to maintain a “B” average to renew your HOPE Grant.

HOPE Grant Awards The HOPE Grant covers tuition, HOPE-approved mandatory fees, and a book allowance of up to $100 per quarter.

How to Apply

You may receive HOPE assistance if you enroll at an eligible Georgia public technical college.

The HOPE Grant is awarded for study leading to a certificate or diploma. Many technical colleges offer two-year degree programs as well. The HOPE Scholarship is awarded to students in degree programs, who must meet different qualifications than students earning a certificate or diploma.

All HOPE applicants attending an eligible technical college must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the HOPE Scholarship and Grant Application each year.
