Rats! How these rodents can ruin your day

• Albany • Americus • Bainbridge • Cordele • Moultrie • Sylvester • Tifton

(BPT) - Say you’ve just gotten home after a long day. All you want to do is put your feet up, but you notice what looks like rodent droppings on the floor, find evidence of something having nibbled at the food in your kitchen and ... what is that scrabbling sound coming from inside your walls? You may feel like panicking at the thought of rats in your home, but a little knowledge about these rodents can go a long way toward preparing you for what to do in the event of an infestation. The experts at Terminix have the answers to some important questions homeowners might have about these particular pests.

Are all rats the same?

Here’s to homeownership!

While they can all cause damage to your home, not all rats are created equal. The main difference lies in their behavior and general geographic location. Roof rats, for example, are found mainly along the coastal regions and port cities in the U.S. These rats are excellent climbers, and are known to use overhanging tree branches or vines to get into a house. Norway rats are a separate species that are more likely to enter your home from the ground floor.

Rats don’t need an open door to make their way into your home. In fact, they can fit through a hole as small as a quarter. Don’t start measuring holes with coins, though - a rat can use its strong teeth to widen a hole that’s too small to fit through. Once inside, the type of rat you’re dealing with impacts where the rodents will hide. Norway rats are more likely to nest on the ground floor of your home or inside crawl spaces, while roof rats are more likely to be found nesting in attics. But rats aren’t picky, and you could find them in stranger places such as chimneys or in old furniture.

What dangers does a rat infestation present? Make no mistake - the rat that winds up in your house isn’t the cute-but-cunning character of cartoons and imagination. In reality, the rodents present multiple dangers to your health and to your home. Not only can rats damage electrical wiring, wooden beams, insulation and food stores, they can also carry pathogens that may transmit diseases to humans, such as hantavirus. These pathogens can be transmitted and even become airborne through urine and droppings, meaning that you could be exposed to disease without ever seeing the rat itself! Because of this, you should never disturb a rodent nest, and instead allow a rodent control professional to handle it. How can you get rid of a rat infestation? Ideally, you’ll prevent rats from entering your home in the first place through methods such as inspecting possible entry points and trimming back trees and shrubbery. But prevention isn’t always possible, even for the most diligent homeowner. If rats do make it into your home, contact a pest control provider such as Terminix. Trained technicians can help diagnose what kind of rat you’re dealing with and come up with a treatment plan.

Balancing 2 (or more) generations under one roof

Tips for seniors who opt to live with family (BPT) - If one family trend is an indicator, aging in America is in for a transformation. As people plan their retirement years, more and more are preferring to make the right adjustments at home to age in place, rather than exploring alternatives such as assisted living facilities and nursing homes. For many, that can mean opting to live under the same roof as their grown children and perhaps even their grandchildren. The advantages of living together The post-war shift away from communal living is in reverse. A recent report from Pew Research says 20 percent of Americans are now living in multigenerational households, a significant increase from the all-time low of 12 percent back in 1980. For many families, living together under one roof is a financially practical solution to offset the increasing financial pressures felt across all generations, from healthcare costs to child care. Where housing is concerned, a majority of California seniors saw living at home - and renovating it to accommodate their needs - as a less expensive option over assisted living or a nursing home, according to a market research survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of SCAN Health Plan, a Medicare Advantage plan that serves California seniors. In addition, 61 percent expressed a preference to make changes to stay in their existing home as long as possible rather than move out. Aside from the financial advantages, living together holds other benefits for seniors. More than half (55 percent) of seniors said they’d be most comfortable living in their current home as they age, ideally with a spouse or other family members. Less than half (47 percent) voiced a preference for living alone at home, 17 percent favor moving in with their children, and 9 percent expect to need assisted living or a nursing home.

MORTGAGE RATES

It’s clear that the idea of living at home with family members - with a spouse, or together with grown children and even grandchildren - is gaining traction. Communal living has many social, emotional and economic upsides that benefit all family members, but it’s important to plan ahead so everyone is comfortable.

LENDER

If this sounds like a solution that would work for your family, it’s important to think through how you would handle some basic things, from adapting your existing space to managing money, to ensure a smooth transition.

Rates can be reduced with discount points. Rates are subject to change upon short notice, and discount points could change frequently. One discount point is equal to one percentage point of the loan amount and is paid when the loan is closed. Most lenders have a variety of programs. ORIGINATION FEE IS NORMALLY ONE ADDITIONAL POINT, BUT CAN VARY. Maximum amount for conventional loan is $417,000. To Participate in the column, call 888-9333. For information on specific mortgage programs call The Lender.

Communication: Combining households can be difficult, and there will be a period of adjustment. Both sets of adults may come in with schedules and habits they’ve grown accustomed to, along with varying tolerance levels for TV, noise and dust. This is especially true if family members are readjusting to the presence of children after a decade or more of childfree living. The key to making it work is a commitment to communicate, which means everyone gets a chance to be heard, and everyone works toward a compromise.

MORTGAGE PAYMENTS CALCULATOR Monthly interest, interest payments for 30-year, fixed rate mortgage. Escrow payments for taxes, insurance not included. Payments are rounded to the nearest dollar.

Money mindfulness: The other issue to be mindful of is money. Unlike a roommate situation, family finances can get murky. From the start, be clear on who pays for what, from utilities, to child care to dinners out. To make sure things stay on track and to anticipate upcoming onetime expenses, a monthly budget meeting is always a good idea.

569955-1

Seek support: Make yourself aware of the resources in your community to help you or your family member maintain independent living as long as possible. For example, SCAN Health Plan also offers a number of programs and services at no cost to seniors and their caregivers in many California counties. SCAN’s mission is to keep seniors healthy and independent, and that extends beyond its own plan membership.

Last Update 10/04/18

Respect for privacy: The first consideration is recognizing the privacy needs of others. Some developers are building housing designed for intergenerational living. Even if you’re not planning on moving to one of these units, their floor plans can provide some inspiration and guidance if you have the room and budget to renovate your existing accommodations to add more separation. Walls, a private entrance, a shower or a kitchenette are upgrades that can make a home more functional for multigenerational living. If renovations are not practical, it’s still important to talk about how to manage the space you have to accommodate the additional family members. Cooking, showering, bedtimes and parking are all things to think about.

Back to basics: The importance of real grass (BPT) - Well-maintained outdoor spaces increase curb appeal and can bolster property values. They inspire kids' imaginations and support healthy play. They make a homegrown neighborhood hangout, ideal for spending time together. Whether you're a first-time homeowner or looking for ways to improve your lawn maintenance skills, RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment) is sharing the benefits of real grass, and why you should grow some, too: Healthy kids need healthy outdoor spaces to play Nothing brings loved ones together like a grass yard. Your yard and the green spaces around your home are an invaluable extension of playtime, exploration and memory making. According to the USDA, kids and teens should be active for at least one hour every day. When kids get out and play, they not only spend valuable time together, but research shows physically active children achieve 40 percent higher test scores. Real grass places to play boost property values Real grass yards make a great first impression for home buyers and are often a differentiating factor from other homes. Beyond curb appeal, a well-kept lawn transforms your backyard into a neighborhood hangout and an invitation for families to enjoy the outdoors. Desirable public parks and other recreational spaces can boost property values of nearby homes by 8-20 percent. Grass keeps it cool when temperatures get hot Real grass makes for the coolest yard on the block, literally! Whether you're throwing the Frisbee with your neighbors, playing fetch with your furry friend or

kicking the soccer ball with the kids, real grass is an always-cool surface to run and play on, especially when summer temperatures rise above 85 degrees. A well-maintained lawn is a point of pride Green, trimmed and weed-free lawns create homeowner pride. While maintaining a clean-cut lawn may seem like a lot of time and effort, we've simplified upkeep into three easy-to-follow steps. • Prevent. The best way to manage lawn care issues is to stop them before they start. Take a proactive approach to caring for areas of your yard that could invite problems. • Find. Before you choose a lawn care game-plan, make sure you understand common problems. For example, do you have brown or dead patches on your lawn? Certain grass varieties may require specific upkeep. Once you understand your grass type, you can grow a healthy lawn and troubleshoot lawn and disease problems.

3 alarming places where germs are hiding in your kitchen

(BPT) - Your kitchen may look clean, but here’s the dirt on what’s really happening. Although a quick daily clean might keep some of the bacteria at bay, it’s important to remember that germs are lurking in the dark corners often overlooked! Since the kitchen tends to be where family and friends congregate, not only is it alarming to discover that things may not be as clean as you thought they were, bacteria can come in contact with the food you eat. That raises your risk of getting sick. These are three places in the kitchen where germs like to hide, along with things you can do to clean up your act. 1. Your refrigerator It’s true, germs can and do hang out inside your refrigerator, especially in the meat and vegetable compartments. In the NSF study, these tested positive for E.coli, salmonella or listeria 36 percent of the time. To keep food safe, discard food that’s past its prime, and maintain a consistent temperature level in the fridge, ideally between 40 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You should also get in the habit of regularly cleaning refrigerator door handles and meat and vegetable drawers!

2. Your dishwashing station Be honest. How long has that kitchen towel been hanging on that loop by the kitchen sink? A week? A month? Can’t remember? If you’re not careful about how often you wash your towels, your kitchen rags could become a breeding ground for dangerous, stomach-sickening germs. According to researchers from the University of Mauritius, towels can develop some nasty bacteria - the kind that causes foodborne illnesses - when they’re used for a full month. Yuck! And don’t forget the kitchen sink sponge. Other research suggests this so-called cleaning tool harbors some of the nastiest germs, with three-quarters of them contaminated with coliform bacteria, according to a study completed by NSF International. To keep things cleaner, get into the habit of grabbing a clean towel every few days. Sponges should not be used for longer than two weeks. 3. Your food prep surfaces

Whether you’re making your lunchtime sandwich or chopping veggies for dinner, don’t be deceived by the spotless appearance of your countertops, sinks and cutting boards. The NSF study discovered that fecal coliform has a presence on these surfaces - 45 percent of kitchen sinks, 32 percent When it’s time to replace your fridge, consider the LG InstaView Door- of countertops and 18 percent of cutting boards. Even if these are wiped in-Door Refrigerator with ColdSaver(TM) panel, which acts like a barrier or rinsed daily, it’s important to take the extra step to keep bacteria from keeping cold air in where it matters the most - inside the refrigerator, lingering on these surfaces where they can contaminate your food. Before extending the life cycle of your food. The InstaView model also lets you see you gather your ingredients, wash all meal prep areas with hot, soapy water. what’s inside before you open the door. Just knock twice on the tinted glass panel to illuminate, and you can find what you need without letting all the Now that you know what to do to combat hidden bacteria lurking in your cold air escape.
