DorchesterARTS SPRING 2012 Becoming the Chair of Dorchester Arts in such an important year is immensely exciting and challenging! A huge ‘thank you’ to Alastair Nisbet, my predecessor, for all that he has done for Dorchester Arts over the last six years. We now have so much to look forward to with our Dorchester Festival 2012 at the beginning of June, whose theme - The World Comes to Town - will be even more fitting in this Olympic year.

Fact and fiction in appearance research CAFÉ SCIENTIFIQUE DORCHESTER ARTS CENTRE • 7.30pm (doors and bar 7pm) • Free, but booking recommended According to the media, physically attractive people are happier and have better social relationships than those who are less attractive. Research findings in the 1970s and 1980s overwhelmingly endorsed the notion that in social situations ‘what is beautiful is good’. However, later research has found outward appearances bear little relationship to adjustment and wellbeing. In this debate researchers from the Centre for Appearance Research, Department of Psychology, University of the West of England share how the latest findings challenge our beauty myths. PAM ZINNEMANNHOPE: ON CIGARETTE PAPERS

MIDNIGHT TRAIN

BOOK LAUNCH DORCHESTER ARTS CENTRE • 8pm (doors and bar 7.30pm) • £6 / £4 members and concessions An extraordinary story begins with Pam’s parents’ elopement from Nazi Germany. After her mother’s death in 1990, Pam finds a tiny pile of cigarette papers with writing penciled in Russian in her hand. Surely these are recipes? They are the starting point for a journey of discovery, stretching from 1905 to 1995, a story of love and exile, dislocation and survival. “The cigarette papers of Pam Zinnemann-Hope’s title stand for the frailty and resilience of her grandparents, parents and their contemporaries. Pam’s poems, written in idiosyncratic, sometimes fractured voices, tell a secret history and allow us insights into a wounded century and its personal legacy.” (Paul Hyland)

DorchesterARTS IN THE COMMUNITY Arts for Everyone

Heartbeat Project

Taking part in arts projects can be a life changing experience. It’s good for our social and emotional wellbeing. It can open up opportunities in the creative industries and it can give a voice to hard to reach groups in our community.

The Heartbeat Project works with neglected children using dramatherapy to develop a language for self-expression. The young people work as a group in an intensive way sharing their stories through projection. This means they use a variety of drama techniques such as role-play, puppetry, masks and music, drawing and dance to distance themselves from their emotive experiences and find a way of living with their story. ‘The students seem to really enjoy doing this and a lot of care was taken in creating colourful, safe dens. I would like to see it run every year for the nurture group.” (Kim Hampson, Teaching Assistant) Dorchester Arts delivers this work in local schools and is supported by Dorset County Council’s Early Intervention Service for children and young people in partnership with Barnados.

Youth Music We provide music making activities for those who would not normally have them due to their circumstances such as rural isolation or being disaffected in education. Through funding from Youth Music and West Dorset District Council we have been able to offer every Year 8 child in Dorchester and Puddletown three days of work with international, professional musicians SHIVA NOVA to create a piece that was performed to all the Middle Schools and the children leaving First Schools. In the evening the children took part in the professional performance alongside SHIVA NOVA at the Corn Exchange. “We know that children can switch off from education during their transition years but enabling them to have a positive experience of music with professional musicians can give them greater self-confidence and renew their motivation.” (Sharon Hayden, Artistic Director)

Wind, Sea and Sail With lottery funding from the British Film Institute’s First Light initiative and support from the unit for Innovation in the Cultural and Creative Industries at Plymouth University, children from primary schools overlooking the 2012 sailing events are making three Olympic-themed films which will have an audience of 100,000 plus at the sailing events in Weymouth and Portland. They follow the highly successful pilot The Sadness of King George created by thirty children at Beechcroft St Paul’s Primary School involving a race through time by Weymouth’s most famous holiday-maker King George III. Assistant head at the school Craig Holloway said it had been a life-changing experience for his class.

The film went on to be screened at Britain’s oldest film festival the Co-operative Film Festival at the National Media Museum in Bradford. Filmmakers from Dorchester Arts are now working with school children in Weymouth to create these three short animated films for the Cultural Olympiad:

Combined Arts Week 2012 Monday 20 August - Saturday 25 August PERFORMANCES THE PORTLAND RACE: In a world where oceans rule the relationship between a boy and his dad is put to the test as they race against time to haul in their precious fishing catch. THE HELPFUL DEAD: When Olympic boats are blown off course and the rescue helicopter grounded, sailing crews seem doomed as they are blown into the notorious Dead Man’s Cove. THE BIG SPLASH: Alone in the sea - out of their depth man versus nature - a group of children discover what it’s like to swim for their lives as they venture across Weymouth Bay during the Olympics. This immensely exciting project is a unique opportunity to engage local children in the thrill of the Olympics and enable them to have a sense of ownership and pride in their community’s contribution.
