Rotary Club of Shrewsbury GUEST SPEAKERS – Rachel Cooper and Daniella Baur

At our Rotary Club of Shrewsbury luncheon meeting on 26 October 2016, our speakers, Rachel Cooper, and her colleague Daniella Baur, spoke to us about Village Water, a Shrewsbury based charity which is helping to change lives in Zambia through the supply of safe water and sanitation. Village Water raises money in the UK and uses it to encourage and finance local groups in Zambia to take ownership of the projects and trains them in the necessary building skills. Zambia has a high water table so there’s not a lot of drilling required. One of the main benefits from the supply of safe water is that health is improved, especially with children. Add to this the saving of time in having to carry water over long distances, and the result is improved attendance at school and a better education. Village Water has begun to introduce a similar programme into Mozambique where only 1 out of 10 homes has access to a safe water supply.
