Catherine Balet Catherine Balet si è laureata all’École des BeauxArts di Parigi. Il suo lavoro mette in discussione le trasformazioni della società, facendo riferimento sia a dipinti storici degli antichi maestri che ai costumi contemporanei in continua evoluzione. La sua serie Strangers in the Light, presentata in questa mostra, è stata ampiamente esposta riscuotendo il plauso internazionale.
Jake e Dinos Chapman Jake e Dinos Chapman hanno collaborato a una lunga serie, esposta con successo, di sculture, installazioni, dipinti, disegni e stampe sin da quando frequentavano il Royal College of Art di Londra. Le loro opere sono spesso deliberatamente scioccanti così come lo sono le loro dichiarazioni pubbliche che rendono la loro arte controcorrente e fuori dalla manipolazione dei media. In un gesto particolarmente noto si sono appropriati dei dipinti originali di Adolf Hitler inserendoli nel loro lavoro. Nel 2003, sono stati nominati per il prestigioso Turner Prize.
Tim Craven Tim Craven ha lavorato nel campo della conservazione dei beni culturali e artistici per collezioni museali di immenso rilievo e la sua conoscenza dei metodi e dei materiali degli antichi maestri illustra chiaramente il suo approccio alla pittura. Nei suoi ultimi lavori esplora la relazione spesso complessa e inquieta tra pittura e fotografia, opponendo uno stile impeccabilmente fotorealistico ai romantici paesaggi inglesi.
Claudia De Grandi Nata a San Paolo, Brasile, Claudia De Grandi ha conseguito un Master in Transnational Art presso la University of the Arts di Londra, Camberwell. Questi studi hanno ispirato e formato il suo approccio alla pittura, alla performance, alla scrittura e alla curatela. I suoi lavori sono stati estensivamente esposti a livello internazionale. I dipinti presenti nella mostra sono tratti dalla sua serie Horizon, un progetto ancora in corso e acclamato dalla critica.
Oska Lappin Nata negli Stati Uniti, Oska ha conseguito un master in incisione presso la Camberwell School of Art di Londra. Il suoi recenti lavori, nella serie Scary Amerika, su carta stampata, disegno e collage, affrontano direttamente le sue preoccupazioni sullo stato attuale della politica americana.
Stephen Newton L’artista e scrittore Stephen Newton possiede un Master in Belle Arti e ha scritto la sua tesi di dottorato sulla psicoanalisi del processo creativo. È stato descritto dal critico e filosofo newyorkese Donald Kuspit come ‘Uno dei migliori pittori oggi al mondo.’ I suggestivi dipinti di Newton ritraggono scene spoglie della vita domestica quotidiana che creano un inquietante senso di disagio – un ritratto tetro della moderna condizione urbana.
Overlap Il duo artistico e musicale fu fondato nel 1999 da Michael Denton e Anna McCrickard al fine di produrre performances ed installazioni. I progetti di Overlap, tra cui Trees and Keys presente nella mostra, esplorano la relazione tra immagini fisse e in movimento utilizzando piani immagine discreti, tecniche di oscuramento e movimenti impliciti. Le loro opere sono state esposte in diversi festival in tutta Europa. Matthew Radford Importante pittore e incisore di fama internazionale che si è laureato alla Camberwell School of Art. Radford ha esposto in musei e gallerie di tutto il mondo, tra cui la Hayward Gallery, Londra, Tate St Ives e il Drawing Center di New York. Una recente mostra personale alla Cat Street Gallery di Hong Kong ha messo in luce i suoi innovativi e radicalmente nuovi approcci all’atto tecnico e viscerale della pittura.
Alan Rankle Alan Rankle ha studiato al Goldsmiths College di Londra. Come artista e curatore ha svolto un ruolo chiave nello sviluppo dell’arte del paesaggio come strumento polemico per affrontare i cambiamenti ambientali. Recenti progetti includono la sua acclamata mostra Sublimate Sublime Subliminal a Londra e l’installazione permanente di quadri, Alluvione di Nero, per la rinomata Isola delle Rose dell’architetto Matteo Thun a Venezia.
Kirsten Reynolds Celebre a livello internazionale come artista per installazioni e performances, la pratica diversificata di Reynold comprende pittura, scultura, collage e incisione. Le sue installazioni con Powerplant sono state esposte in importanti festival tra cui Edimburgo e Sydney. Le opere presenti nella mostra sono stampe della sua serie di grande valore da collezione Light Drawings.
Cat Roissetter Cat Roissetter ha studiato al Royal College of Art di Londra dove ha ricevuto il Premio di stampa Augustus Martyn per l’incisione. Il suo lavoro parte da fonti fotografiche maltrattate tramite sbiancamento del sole e raccolta di polvere. Le immagini, osservate attentamente, degenerano attraverso queste distorsioni di stampa mista, disegno, incisione e pittura.
Charlotte Snook I dipinti di Charlotte Snook, che ha studiato al Royal College of Art di Londra, ricordano la maestria pittorica degli artisti del tardo barocco come Velazquez e Tiepolo. Le sue opere sempre più ricercate sono esempi eccezionali di pittura figurativa. Le loro opere riportano i precedenti storici del surrealismo e dell’avanguardia teatrale in un importante contesto contemporaneo. Sono stati protagonisti di Personal Structures: Crossing Borders alla 56° Biennale di Venezia insieme, tra altri, a Yoko Ono, Lawrence Weiner e Daniel Buren.
Rebecca Youssefi Diplomata all’università di Westminster, Londra, Youssefi è rappresentata nella mostra da un dipinto tratto dalla sua serie Major Arcana. Ha debuttato nel 2014 con una mostra molto apprezzata di dipinti e performances alla Underdog Gallery di Londra. In una recente intervista ha espresso il suo desiderio di ‘indagare esperienze visive connesse a tutti – nascita, vita e morte’. La sua prima mostra personale a Milano, Major Arcana, è in programma per l’autunno 2018 presso lo spazio espositivo Tracce di Vapore.
NOTES ON THE ARTISTS
Catherine Balet Catherine Balet is a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her work questions the transformations of society and the search for identity, referencing both historical painting and the changing mores of contemporary society. Her series Strangers in the Light featured in this exhibition has been widely exhibited to international acclaim.
Jake and Dinos Chapman Jake and Dinos Chapman have collaborated on a long and successfully exhibited series of sculptures, installations, paintings, drawings and prints since attending the Royal college of Art in London. Their works are often deliberately shocking as are their public pronouncements which make an art out of mainstream media manipulation. In a particularly notorious gesture they appropriated Adolf Hitler’s original paintings into their work. In 2003, they were nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize.
Tim Craven Tim Craven has worked in the field of art conservation for major museum collections and his knowledge of the methods and materials of the old masters clearly informs his approach to painting. In recent works in he explores the often uneasy relationship between painting and photography, contrasting a flawless, photorealistic style with romantic English landscapes.
Claudia De Grandi Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil Claudia De Grandi holds an MA in Transnational Art at the University of the Arts in London, Camberwell. A study which has inspired and informed her approach to painting and curating. The paintings featured in the exhibition are from her critically acclaimed Horizon series. Oska Lappin Born in the USA Oska gained an MA in printmaking from Camberwell School of Art, London. Her recent works Scary Amerika in print, drawing and collage, directly address her concerns about the current state of American politics.
Stephen Newton Artist and writer Stephen Newton has an M.A. in Fine Art and wrote his PhD thesis on the psychoanalysis of the creative process. Described by the New York critic and philosopher Donald Kuspit as ‘One of the best painters painting in the world today.’ Newton’s striking works paintings depict paired down scenes from everyday domestic life which create an unnerving sense of unease – a bleak portrait of the modern urban condition.
Overlap The duo founded by Michael Denton and Anna McCrickard works in video and installations. Projects including Trees and Keys explore the relationship between still and moving images using discrete image planes, and implicit movement. Their works have been shown throughout Europe.
Matthew Radford A prominent and internationally recognised painter and printmaker who graduated from Camberwell School of Art. Radford has exhibited at museums and galleries worldwide, including the Hayward Gallery, London, Tate St Ives, and the Drawing Center in New York. A recent solo exhibition at the Cat Street Gallery in Hong Kong highlighted his ground breaking, radically new approaches to the technical and visceral act of painting. Alan Rankle Alan Rankle studied at Goldsmiths College London. An artist and curator he has played a key role in the development of landscape art as a way of addressing environmental issues. Projects have included his highly acclaimed curated exhibition Sublimate Sublime Subliminal in London and a permanent installation Alluvione di Nero for architect Matteo Thun’s renowned Isola delle Rose in Venice.
Kirsten Reynolds Internationally renowned as an installation and performance artist, Reynold’s diversified practice includes, painting, sculpture, collage and printmaking. Her installations using sound, light, and electronics with Powerplant have been shown at major art festivals including Edinburgh and Sydney. The works featured in the exhibition are unique prints from her highly collectable Light Drawings series.
Cat Roissetter Cat Roissetter studied Visual Communications at the Royal College of Art, London where she was awarded the Augustus Martyn Print Prize for etching. She works from photographic sources mistreated through sun bleaching, dust gathering, scale collecting, damp and general rot. Carefully observed images degenerate through these distortions of mixed media print, drawing, etching and painting.
Charlotte Snook The paintings of Charlotte Snook who studied at the Royal college of Art in London, recall the pictorial mastery of late Baroque artists such as Velazquez and Tiepolo. Her increasingly sought after works are outstanding examples of figurative painting. The titles of these miniscule literary and classical evocations Bacchus and the Hanged Man, Auto da Fe give a further resonance to her intentions.
Walter and Zoniel: The internationally famed artist duo Walter & Zoniel work in installations, photography, sculpture, film and performance. Their works bring the historical precedents of surrealism and theatrical avant-garde into an important contemporary context. They were featured in Personal Structures: Crossing Borders at the 56th Venice Biennale alongside, among others, Yoko Ono, Lawrence Weiner and Daniel Buren.
Rebecca Youssefi A graduate of University of Westminster, London, Youssefi is represented in the exhibition by a painting from her Major Arcana series. She made her debut in 2014 with a much admired exhibition of paintings and performance at the Underdog Gallery, London. In a recent interview with Sussex Life magazine she expressed her desire to ‘look at visual experiences that connect to everyone – birth, life and death.’ Her first solo exhibition in Milan, Major Arcana, is scheduled for Autumn 2018 at Tracce di Vapore .
