Girls State Citizens Elected New Leadership

By Megan Kirby This year’s Girls’ State has been a whirlwind of activity and energy, and inauguration night was no exception. After four days of campaigning and hard work, the county and state officials were announced. The room was filled with energy and anticipation as delegates found out who would be their representatives. Dressed in formal attire, the delegates rode buses to the Morgan Theater. Director Lee Sellers called the officials to the stage and the ceremony began with a beautiful performance of the Alabama State Song by the choir. Next, Sixth Circuit Judge Elizabeth Hammer swore the girls into office. The Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor, and Governor received flowers. Counselor Mary Gasson sang “Anyway” by Martin

McBride as homage to the new Governor. Keynote speaker Kate Randall, previously a Girls’ State Governor and Girls’ Nation President, humbly took the stage to talk about leadership and the impact that every one of us can have on some one else. She called this the “lollipop moment”, a reference to Drew Dudley’s Ted Talk. Lollipops in hand, the girls were taken to the Bryant-Denny stadium for dinner. Although Terri Sewell and Martha Tony, U.S Representatives of Alabama, couldn’t attend the event, they sent a video message to inspire the delegates to continue their good work. The counselors spoke of the time they spent with their City’s delegates, and staff member Lillian Roth was recognized for her outstanding contributions to Girls’ State. Ibby Dixon, this year’s Girls’ State Governor, also spoke of her experience at Girls’ State and how the girls influenced her to be “confident” and push through her own “fears and doubts”. As the end of Girls’ State drew near, emotions ran high as delegates prepared to leave their new friends and head home. Congratulations to everyone who attended Girls’ State and represented their schools and community with pride. Congratulations also to the newly elected county and state officers who are fine representatives of Girls’ State in Alabama. As our time together comes to and end, one thing is certain: the memories made and lessons learned will stay with us always.
