By: Gabrielle Eslava On the evening of June 13th, 2019, delegates of the 77th Girls’ State gathered for the Inaugural Dinner honoring the newly elected and inaugurated Governor of Alabama Girls State, Brianna Byrd. Earlier in the day, the county and state positions, which included Attorney General Chloe Kinderman and Lieutenant Governor Terri Kim, had been sworn into office at an official ceremony located on campus at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. The first speaker of the night was Dr. Cathy Randall, an alumna of Girls State and Girls Nation where she was elected and served as both Governor and President, respectively. She gave an inspiring speech honoring the achievement of participating in Girls’ State and touching on the great things the future has in store. Following Dr. Randall, the second speaker at the dinner was Governor Brianna Byrd. Making her genuine compassion for her peers clear, Governor Byrd gave a tear-jerking speech praising the enormous potential of each delegate. She urged the delegates not to forget the feeling of the night, but to carry it with them. To wrap up the evening, the counselors from each city gave toasts to their delegates, while Chairman Jane Shelton Dale toasted her staff members, and Director Lee Sellers gave a toast to the American Legion Auxiliary. These melancholic speeches also highlighted the growth of the delegates throughout the week. The toasts exemplified the bonds and memories that the delegates will carry with them for the rest of their lifetimes. Lastly, the annual Jane Shelton Dale outstanding counselor award was given to Mary Elizabeth Gasson, a loyal and long-time member of the Girls State staff and family!
