Ihave always considered myself a creative, but not necessarily an artist. As a child, I often struggled with drawing, feeling frustrated by my inability to create realistic shapes or capture the scenes I imagined in my mind. My lines were wobbly, and proportions never seemed right. However, where my drawing skills fell short, my ability to work with color shined. Fast forward to today, and my natural instinct for combining hues is at the forefront of everything I create. Whether it is layering soft tones to reflect a cotton candy sky or boldly pairing vibrant colors for an eye-catching contrast, I find joy in the way colors can transform my work. While I can’t always draw what I envision, I can always bring it to life with color.

In bridal fashion, color plays a powerful role in expressing personal style. While classic white and ivory gowns remain timeless choices, we see brides embracing a wider variety of shades that reflect their individuality. In our feature, “Blush, Not Bashful,” on pages 78-91, we present light lavender, radiant red, and even bold black as inspired alternatives to traditional tastes. Color also influences the overall mood of the wedding. On page 92, you’ll see ethereal, pastel tones that evoke a sense of dreaminess. Later on page 100, we share rich jewel tones that convey luxury and drama.

Eating with the eyes first emphasizes the importance of presentation which we showcase on page 64. Vibrant hues and visually appealing appetizers can stimulate the senses before the first bite, sparking curiosity and anticipation of what is to come. A plate filled with a rich array of colors

immediately draws the eye, suggesting freshness, flavor, and creativity. The artistry behind colorful food encourages a connection to the ingredients themselves, making the act of eating feel more like an immersive experience, where flavor and visual appeal work together to delight both the senses and the soul.

Year after year, one of my favorite sections is our Real Weddings, which begins on page 116. Not only does it serve as the ultimate mood board of inspiration, but it also shows how diverse style can be here in Alabama. Allyson and Ashton’s forest fête is a shining example of how to push the limits of tradition and integrate vivid color. Ann Casey and Taran’s autumnal affair is a great showing of how to incorporate natural tones paired against an industrial setting. Jonica and James show us that using vibrant hues is nothing to be afraid of. I would be remiss if I didn’t note that in most of our submissions, even for The Color Issue, the palettes remained relatively neutral. It is our goal to be inspirational, yet still admire the beauty that well-edited selections can create. It is in these stories and the privilege of telling them that reminds me how important individuality is to the world in which we live.

This issue is devoted to color. Be brave. Use all the crayons in the box.

TICKLED PINK

“Infusing color into your wedding gown is a creative way to show off your unique personality. Whether it is through embroidery, applique, delicate floral patterns, or entirely made from a color, a bride can choose her level of imagination.”

Cathy Kelley, The White Room

If you know me, you know I adore color – my last name is one, after all. As you flip through these pages, I hope you fall in love with the endless array of hues this world offers and discover ways to weave it into your wedding story.

Color is more than what meets the eye. It’s emotion, personality, and storytelling all wrapped into one. What shades tell your love story? Nature is where I find inspiration on my travels. Perhaps it’s the warm blush of a summer sunset at Bryce National Park, the tranquil blues of the Caribbean Ocean, or the lush greens of the Hoh Rain Forest.

Let this issue inspire you to use color as a reflection of not just your style, but also your heart. After all, your story deserves to shine as bright and bold as your love.

Stay Golden!

As an artist, I often say that my only real skill is being good with color. On my desk, I have markers and pencils in every hue along with an endless supply of Smarties, which I find to be the perfect color palette for any occasion. Add a dash of neon, and I’m a happy camper.

Color has the power to both unite and define difference. Where Southern wedding traditions can often be the same, color is what makes them special. Where cultural traditions may differ, color can be the common ground. We may share the same word for a color, but we all hold a different hue in our minds. Together, they create a complete color wheel.

I dedicate my work in this issue to the artists in Alabama that add a splash of color to our lives. I find a great deal of inspiration in the murals of downtown Birmingham, including the work seen behind me by Dewon Moton, as well as those by Erica L. Chisholm, Marcus Fetch, Bendy Knees Design, and other contributors that make our shared spaces more colorful. My hat is off to all those that dare to express themselves through any medium, whether it be with a calligraphic pen, floral design, needle and thread, photography, paintbrush, or so much more. Keep making the world more beautiful.

Never lose your Wonder. Follow your North Star.

OF GUNN THE GRIT

If beauty is a journey, Dr. Holly Gunn is the guide.

iMages

Dr. Holly Gunn, owner of Gunn Dermatology in Mountain Brook, offers care for all ages and specializes in medical, surgical, cosmetic, and laser dermatology. When it comes to beauty, Dr. Gunn practices in and out of the office. Combining her passions for fashion, a healthy lifestyle, and stateof-the-art practices, she embodies her work boldly so that her clients can feel as empowered as she is when they step into the world each day.

Q: What do you feel defines your individuality and personal style?

A: Grit is definitely something that defines me. My personality and style is a mix of classy, educated hipster with a flare for art and science and all things beautiful and healthy.

Q: What range of services does Gunn Dermatology provide?

A: Based on an individual’s consultation by one of our aesthetic staff members, we offer PHYSIQ body contouring, Envi skin tightening, non-surgical butt lifts, Vivace microneedling, cryotherapy, an infrared sauna, and even spray tans. We also have numerous laser and skintightening treatments that make the skin stronger. We choose treatments based on the client’s individual needs.

Q: Is there a service you have been loving for your clients recently?

A: We have loved recommending Ellacor when it is the best approach. It can remove sagging skin without surgery!

Q: If someone is looking to book a consultation with you prior to the wedding day, how far out should this be planned?

A: Sometimes we have brides walk in a few weeks before the wedding, and we can still help them look their best. I prefer to have nine months before the wedding in case we need a series of treatments and multiple modalities. Everyone needs a consultation to create a customized plan for their personal needs.

Q: What is your top piece of advice for brides wanting radiant skin on their wedding day?

A: One week before the wedding, we recommend getting an Aquagold facial treatment, and then the week of the wedding do a hydrafacial and dermaplane! Wear sunscreen daily, get skin checks yearly, establish a good skincare routine, and do regular facials. Healthy skin is a marathon not a sprint!

ETERNAL PLATINUM

Building a legacy with bridal pieces.

If diamonds are forever, platinum is its eternal equal! Platinum has been heralded over the centuries for its durable properties, making it one of the most sought after and rare precious metals on the planet. In fact, there is more platinum found in meteorites and on the moon than here on mother Earth.

Platinum is unique in the sense that it is almost completely pure. That means no or few alloys are added to it to make the metal jewelry quality, making it an excellent hypoallergenic option. Though platinum is dense, it is still very malleable, which works in the ring's favor. When a platinum ring is polished, bumped, dropped, or nicked, the platinum simply moves to the side, and can be polished back into place to look good as new. Many jewelers refer to platinum as, “heirloom quality,” for this reason. Maybe you have inherited platinum pieces or plan to pass down your bridal jewelry one day. Platinum metal maintains its brilliant white hue over time, making an excellent duo to your gorgeous diamond or gemstone center stones. Additionally, platinum for a gentlemen’s band is a smart option to ensure that you both can enjoy effortless upkeep over time.

When considering platinum for your engagement ring, wedding bands, or day-of jewelry, it’s important to identify the sentimental value that these items possess. In an ever-evolving landscape of rising prices and cost-effective alternatives, investing in fine jewelry cannot be underestimated. At the end of the day, we want our jewelry pieces to maintain or increase in their value over time – and platinum allows you to do just that!

TO ALL OPEN

Owners of Avenue D, Chuck and Laura Turner, welcome you to their inclusive venue venture.

Q: How would you best describe Avenue D to potential couples?

A: We describe our design aesthetic as, “bougie industrial.” The space itself is unique enough that it won’t look like everyone else’s wedding, but is also able to fit into your specific design. Our outdoor area, which is almost the same size as the indoor space, has a truly Birmingham view of Sloss Furnaces. Almost year-round, more people can be found out there during receptions than inside. We are one of the only venues in the city of Birmingham with such a large, unshared outdoor space.

Q: How did the venue come to life?

A: Well, it was a completely impulsive decision. We were looking for office space and a bit of storage space for a previous business. Our realtor showed us this property and it didn’t work for what we were thinking; however, we saw the location and the view and I asked, “Why don't we open an event venue?” Chuck said, “Okay!” and the rest is history.

Q: What have you enjoyed most about the events that Avenue D has hosted?

A: We really do love meeting so many different couples and their families and friends from all over the world as well as seeing how each couple has their own special thing that they bring to their wedding. It makes our day to get comments from the couples and their guests about how the wedding was even better than they thought it was going to be. What truly sets us apart, however, is our customer service. Our attention to detail and personal involvement are our superpowers.

Q: What do you look forward to most working together on this venue?

A: Truthfully, just seeing what it all becomes. Because we had no plans to do this, we have no expectations. Everything has been a wonderful surprise! We also love seeing how our clients bring their creativity and personalities into the space to make it their own. If you can dream it, you can do it at Avenue D.

SETTINGS STATELY

Susan Newman, Executive Director of the Eufala Heritage Association, take us inside the historic Shorter Mansion.

Shorter Mansion was completed in 1906 by Eli Sims Shorter, II and his wife, Wileyna Lamar, of Macon, Georgia, heiress of the SSS Tonic fortune. It has been designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as an outstanding example of Greek Revival architecture and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home was purchased from the granddaughter of the builder in 1965 by the newly formed Eufaula Heritage Association. Later, the Alabama Legislature appropriated funds to furnish the home and to establish a museum honoring the six governors of Alabama from Barbour County. Since then, the public has enjoyed renting it for weddings, receptions, teas, and other special occasions. Located right in the middle of downtown Eufaula, The Shorter Mansion was featured in the movie, "Sweet Home Alabama," as the home in which Reese Witherspoon returns to get married. It is a stunning example of the Southern lifestyle.

Q: What different areas of Shorter Mansion are available for use during weddings?

A: Areas that are available for rental are the entire inside of the mansion, the outside green space, and the outdoor pavilion. Wedding parties can rent separately the pavilion and the mansion itself or both. Our rentals include linens, tables, and chairs (inside the mansion only) as well as china and silverware. We also offer a suite for the bridal party to get dressed. Couples can provide any vendor they would like to partner with. We do offer some options locally if they need help. All caterers must be licensed in the City of Eufaula.

Q: What would an ideal wedding day experience look like from start to finish at Shorter Mansion?

A: With more than 29 years of experience in the event and wedding industry, I am well-versed in ensuring a smooth day for couples and vendor teams. We would have the bridal suite

ready for the group to begin getting ready. Pictures would be taken all over the property, including first looks, beautiful portraits, and cherished family photos. If a vendor needs to arrive a day earlier, we will work with them to have a seamless event. The caterer would set up in our catering kitchen and work out of that area to provide service. The band or DJ would set up in the pavilion and be ready for the evening of fun. Cake cutting is done inside along with a champagne toast and a fabulous send-off from the front porch to their honeymoon.

Q: What advice do you have for couples as they begin their venue selection?

A: Find a place that makes you feel at home – so comfortable and easy to see yourself in. Also, it should be a place that allows you to enjoy the most incredible day in your life! Make sure that the site has someone who knows how to handle all aspects of a seamless event. Forget all worries and have a wonderful time.

DOWN the

LANE

Michael and Linda Adler reflect on ten years of memories at Shady Lane.

Several years ago, the Adlers helped lead some marriage retreats and conference weekends for a Nashville organization. Thoroughly enjoying that experience and then launching into branding and leading their own events, they got to a point where they began to be more serious about it on a larger scale. The vision for Shady Lane came as a byproduct of those years of marriage events. Having already served as singers or officiants in most of the area venues, they had a good idea of what improvements they wanted to bring to their own venue if it could become a reality. They spent about five years and every spare moment focusing on location and scope and style and finances and design. After selling their major assets, they took a giant leap of faith, really believing that this was God’s purpose for their next chapter in life. While the challenges were many, the Adlers can now laugh and say those challenges made them stronger. The truth is they didn’t realize how challenging much of this process would be until they were standing in the middle of an empty field with a 100’ tape measure trying to make their vision into reality. True to any construction process, there were typical challenges such as permits, engineering, and topography, but the Adlers believe that the process was nearly painless because of the stellar construction team led by Scott Gurosky of the Birmingham design and build firm, Myrick Gurosky and Associates. Architect Michael O’Kelly, Engineer Joel Childers, Landscape Architect Don Jones, and Project Manager David Peeks were four of the generals that supplied not only their expertise, but also a healthy measure

of true passion for this project and their success. They consider each of these people gifts from God along the way.

Linda’s dad was a coach and PE teacher all his life. He was passionate, loved people, loved his family, and was a man of faith. He was also an artist before his passing. Linda was a competitive swimmer and singer and has brought those unique skills into every design element of Shady Lane. Michael’s dad was a US Marine, a hard worker, loved his family, and was also a man of faith. Linda and Michael are most often the first to unlock Shady Lane in the morning and lock it down at night, but they both cherish the roots given them by their parents.

One of Linda’s main highlights was the marriage of two of their four sons at Shady Lane. “Being able to be in a place to provide this space for our own children was worth every bit of work we have put into it,” said Michael Adler. For Michael, several highlights have been the personal relationships he

has built with clients. When a potential bride and groom decide to be married at Shady Lane, they are most often new at everything. Michael enjoys those times when conversations help to live out the Proverbs 27:17 verse in the Bible that says, “Iron sharpens iron.”

“We are better people for having met the hundreds of couples who have been married at Shady Lane,” says Adler. “We have had many highlights in our ten years of business, so we will offer two. The first is the moment we laid a 100’ tape measure down in the weeds of this massive empty field and prayed. There was no Shady Lane and no business, just a sense that we were supposed to do this next thing. It was exciting and scary and one giant leap of faith. Our second is the other bookend of this journey just a few weeks ago. We finished an event and actually had a minute to pause and take it all in. We marveled and laughed and sighed and groaned at ten years of investing in brides and grooms and families. It has been such a ride.”

The celebration doesn’t have to end after the reception; many couples host a farewell brunch the next day to cap off the weekend in style. With so many on-site amenities, your guests will feel like they’ve stepped into a luxurious getaway, all while celebrating your special day."

PLANS MAKING

Wedding planner Symone Shaw takes us inside her team's process for picture-perfect Occasions.

Q: How did you get started with the wedding industry?

A: I am a bit unique in the sense that I have always known that I wanted to be involved in the wedding and event world! I remember going to a wedding when I was a child and absolutely falling in love with everything about it. Always knowing what I wanted to do career-wise gave me a great head start and I was able to start learning and working in the industry as a teenager.

Q: What are the cornerstones of your planning process that make a wedding signature to your team?

A: One of the cornerstones of our full-service planning process is how accessible we are to our clients when it comes to communication. Unlike others, there is no limit to the amount of meetings, phone calls, or texts that a client can schedule or send. We are truly your best friend when it comes to all things wedding, so blow our phones up! We also have a long history of event design experience that truly allows us to bring every couple's vision to life no matter the obstacle.

Q: What do you love most about getting to work with couples planning their wedding?

A: I adore getting to know and becoming lifelong friends with the couples that I work with. Celebrating and going above and beyond for them is so easy when you are surrounded by kind and amazing clients.

Q: What is the final week before the wedding like for your team?

A: We are in the final stretch and production builds have typically started so it is a lot of vendor communication, unboxing all of the specialty rentals

that have arrived, and triple-checking seating charts. For couples that do not have a planner, the amount of vendor communication that occurs when production starts would be very stressful. An Occasions team member is always on-site while vendors are present in order to direct and answer any questions that may arise. The couple and their families cannot do this once their family and friends start arriving, nor should they have to.

Q: How soon should a couple try to book a planner before the wedding date?

A: As soon as possible! A big misconception couples have is that they have to book their venue before they can hire a planner and that is not the case. We are here to help guide you throughout the entirety of this season of life.

Q: What advice do you have for couples planning their wedding?

A: Besides the obvious, “hire a planner,” I would advise couples to always remember why we are here in the first place – to celebrate your marriage! This celebration is about the two of you and the new chapter of life you are entering together.

THE BAND! STRIKE UP

Founder and Manager of Nationwide Coverage Music, Matt Casey, starts the party on the right note.

Q How did the band get its start?

A: I started Nationwide Coverage in 2003 with some good friends and fellow musicians. Our humble beginnings had us playing at bars and clubs in and around Birmingham. While we still call Birmingham home, we also play all over the country: Napa Valley, Jackson Hole, Chicago, NYC, Miami and more. We are truly living up to our name, Nationwide Coverage!

Q: How would you best describe the ultimate experience for your clients?

A: Well of course our clients having the best night of their lives is our number one priority. Additionally, we have a wealth of expertise behind the scenes that we share with our clients that we've developed over the past 20 years. We are very much a part of the planning process and work closely with event planners and coordinators to help execute our clients' vision. We emcee the event that night and help gather details leading up to the event. Watching our clients' dreams come true at their wedding is such a joy!

Q: What is the range of services offered by Nationwide Coverage?

A: We provide a high-energy dynamic performance on the highest level. The full band stage show is the primary feature but we often provide other additional services. These include, but not limited to: live ceremony music and all tech needs, live cocktail music ranging from solo piano to a jazz quartet, elegant dinner music, and emcee services throughout the event, including announcements, help with toasts, and always providing the highest quality wireless microphones

Q: What advice do you have for couples as they consider their event's entertainment selection?

A: I always encourage clients to do their research. There are lots of bands out there, and there is the perfect band for each couple. We are always honored to be the band for our clients and be a part of their unforgettable night.

"The

full brass section upgrade is unforgettable and one you want for your event. The Nationwide horns take the party to the next level!”

FITTING ROOM

Deborah Wiggins dresses Southern ladies for life's greatest moments.

The Clothes Tree by Deborah celebrates its 60th anniversary in May of 2025. Deborah Wiggins' grandmother opened the store when she was in her early 50s and dressed all of the professional women in her day. It has since become a crossroads in the South for ladies of all ages finding styles for every day and milestone moments from prom to being mothers of brides and grooms.

“We have been in our Old Rocky Ridge location for 30 years,” says Wiggins. “Our first customers have had daughters and now granddaughters that shop with us. It’s so awesome to see these generations coming through the store, especially as my pageant girls are bringing in their daughters for their pageants and proms. We have worked with many state title holders from all 50 states in national pageants from kids to Mrs. Senior World, and have been dressing Miss Alabama for the Miss America pageant for more than 27 years!”

Many of the same ladies that The Clothes Tree has dressed for the main stage at pageants, including Baskin Champion and Hannah Brown for Miss Alabama USA and Miss America 2005, Deidre Downs, have all appeared in the pages of Alabama Weddings over the years. It is especially rewarding to see these ladies continue to grow beyond the pageants as they pursue careers, get married, and bring their daughters to The Clothes Tree for their first time.

“After expanding to Nashville, Tennessee two years ago, we have also been able to work with Reba McEntire for The Voice, Pam Tillis, Linda Davis, Pia Toscano, and so many inspirational women. Through the years, the store has made a lot of changes, but we have always stayed true to customer service being the most important.”

"I hope all the girls that have come through these doors love the way they look, and keep coming back for all of life's greatest occasions. We always have room!"

"I've always been captivated by Dutch still lifes – the colors, compositions, and the way each flower or object has its moment. When we apply these principles to floral design, we create our own masterpiece, even if ours is fleeting and temporary."

"The 1616 House is our labor of love, thoughtfully restored and meticulously designed as the ideal wedding venue. Every detail, from the elegant historic architecture to the monochromatic dressing suites, was carefully chosen to evoke emotion and create a meaningful experience for every couple."

The Color Story

“The girls in my family have always worn my grandmother’s pearls on their wedding day, so I wanted to incorporate pearls and other antique elements into my wedding. I love the look of all different bridesmaids dresses, so I decided dusty purple, blush, and champagne dresses would fit my antique vision. I gave them total freedom to choose dresses, and I was thrilled with how the completed look turned out!” Mariel

Advice From the Bride

“My biggest piece of advice is to truly enjoy your day. I had so many people comment on how chill and relaxed I was on wedding day, and I truly was. I had an amazing team of vendors, and I knew they were going to take care of me and protect the vision that I had dreamed up for so long. I just let go and let my team do their jobs. How They Met

“I moved to Mountain Brook as a junior in high school. We were best friends for a year and attached at the hip. Everyone always said that he had a crush on me, but I didn’t believe them until he confessed his love at the beginning of senior year. It took me a while to come around, but the rest is history! He proposed at his farm in Pike Road. We woke up early to go hunting, and he stopped on the way there and got down on one knee. To say I was surprised would be an understatement!” Luci

The Color Story

“Our wedding palette took inspiration from the French country, honing in on the elegant ash blues and warm whites. I wanted a palette that complemented and highlighted the traditional French restoration of The 1616 House that Cristina and Spencer have spent so much love and time crafting. Pops of romantic pale pinks and the dark natural greenery expanded the palette to feel complete.”

Advice From the Bride

“I would say to not stress during wedding planning! I know it can be a lot, but at the end of the day it’s just about you two. The day goes by so fast, and all you’re really concerned about is you and your husband and having fun. It’s not worth the stress of perfecting all the little details. It all ends up being perfect anyway, and all that matters is that you two spend it together and soak it all up! Those memories will last forever.”

The Color Story

“Our wedding color palette was a simple cream and green with pops of pink. We wanted these colors to complement rather than compete with the beautiful colors of the Greek Orthodox Church. This choice also allowed the natural beauty of The Club and the lights of Birmingham, visible from The Club’s view, to shine. We incorporated the design from our invitation and envelope liner as a subtle background for the bars, tying everything together seamlessly.”

The Vow Renewal

“Ten years ago, Spencer and I exchanged vows in my hometown of San Diego. It was the start of a beautiful journey that led us across the country to Montgomery. There, we found a historic gem, The 1616 House, and poured our hearts into restoring it, turning it into the wedding venue of our dreams. It wasn’t just a building to us; it was a symbol of our love and the life we were building together. A decade later, we celebrated our anniversary in the most fitting way: an elegant black-tie dinner surrounded by our closest friends. Filled with laughter and love, I couldn’t help but reflect on how far we’ve come. I know it will only get better with time.”

"Almost nothing is presented to you on a silver platter. You have to really work for it."
Katarina Witt

Color evokes emotions and adds depth to our lives. The colorful characters that I am lucky to create with color my world and give it so much joy and excitement. Color influences our mood, creativity, and perception. Whether in nature, art, or design; it enriches our lives, making the world feel more dynamic, alive, and full of possibility.

As we look forward to the year ahead, I think about legacy.

The 25th anniversary, celebrated with silver, marks a significant milestone in our journey and symbolizes a quarter-century commitment to inspiring couples. We will continue our work by creating beauty and showcasing memories that will endure a lifetime in Alabama Weddings 2026: The 25th Anniversary Issue
