REFLECTION. Admiring a freshly polished piece of silver brings a sense of accomplishment. Seeing your reflection reminds you that you’ve done something well. Looking back at twenty-five years of Alabama Weddings, and closely at the six I’ve served as its publisher and Editor-in-Chief, assures me of the same. My goal has been for every reader to see a reflection of their love story on these pages. Through our real weddings, you’ll discover that no matter one’s color or creed, everyone is represented. I began my journey with Alabama Weddings in 2008, producing my first editorial feature and putting my fresh marketing degree to work designing ads for its pages. Just as I felt with my very first issue, I am deeply proud of what we’ve created for this 25th Anniversary Edition in your hands today. This year, I am thrilled to share with you new talent, such as Gracie Eddins, who photographed Miss America 2025, Abbie Stockard, for our premier cover. Though, within the pages of the Silver Issue, it is the legacy stories that move me most. On page 90, you will meet Dorothy McDaniel, Susan Mason, and Kathy G. Mezrano, three extraordinary women who shaped the special events industry and remain hard-working examples of legacy in action. Featured artist, Mo Davis, comes home again to share her talent in photographing “Down to the Courthouse,” as seen on page 100. Mo and I began our creative journeys here in Alabama near the same time, and it has been a delight to see her growth recognized on the global stage. To all contributing creatives who lend your talent to our pages, I thank you. To every couple who hopes to find trusted professionals that will care for your wedding, the ones contained within these pages are Alabama’s best. As Alabama Weddings reaches such a milestone, a tremendous note of gratitude to David Kirk, who keeps the wonder ahead of us at all times. No matter how many years pass, when we work hard and commit ourselves to excellence, resilience shines through, and dedication always finds its reward. I look forward to seeing where the next twenty-five years take us all.

My time with Alabama Weddings began in 2009 as a model for Christopher’s "Pretty in Pink" signature style shoot at Workplay Theatre. It was the day I not only saw how the magazine came to life, but also met its founder and publisher, Michelle Van Every. Christopher later reintroduced me to her as a writer and visual designer while I was preparing to graduate from the University of Alabama, and I stepped into my role as an editor to begin producing the 2013 edition alongside Michelle. Over the hills and through the woods, this is now my tenth annual edition. I have produced four issues with Michelle and six with Christopher. We have all worn many hats over the years, and I am thankful for every single one I have learned to wear. In my humble opinion, no similar publication comes close to what we have produced, cover to cover, with local small businesses, pure ingenuity, and a long-lasting legacy. My work in this 25th anniversary edition is dedicated to Alabama. Everyone has their own notion of what Alabama means to them. For me, Alabama is Southern cooking in Orrville on Sunday and James Beard Award-winning chefs in Birmingham on Thursday. It is afternoon conversations with artists in Pelham and morning hikes in Tuskegee. It is styling musicians in Montgomery during the day and spinning house music in Avondale at night. Everything is what you make of it, so live in the moment, and the rest will come. Celebrate life’s greatest moments in a way that is meaningful to you. When in doubt, follow your North Star. Never lose your Wonder. Choose your own Adventure.

David Kirk

Art Director

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a collector, of stories, of memories, and, quite literally, of salt and pepper shakers. My collection began when I was nine-years-old, and with every new journey since, I’ve added another tiny pair to my shelves. Each set tells its own story, where I’ve been, what I’ve seen, and the moments that have seasoned my life with meaning. As Alabama Weddings celebrates 25 years, I find myself reflecting on how much that mirrors what this magazine has become: a beautiful collection of stories from across our state. Each issue, like one of my keepsakes, represents a place, a couple, a creative spark, a reminder of how love takes shape in countless ways. This anniversary issue is both a celebration and a journey. It is a reflection of where we’ve been, a toast to where we’re going, and a love letter to every couple and creative who has added their flavor to our story. Wherever life takes you, whether across the world or right here in Alabama, may you always find beauty worth collecting, stories worth telling, and colors worth celebrating.

GIRLS ON THE GREEN Round out your wedding weekend at Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa. Photography by Sam Jasper Photography

If you have ever dreamed of whisking your guests away to a place that feels like its own little world, where rolling hills, elegant architecture and warm Southern hospitality meet, Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa might be your perfect match. Tucked into the peaceful landscape just outside Birmingham, the resort does not simply host weddings; it creates fullweekend experiences that couples and their guests talk about for years. “Ross Bridge is more than a venue; it’s a destination experience,” said Jonathan McKinney, Director of Sales and Marketing. With recent renovations that blend modern style and timeless charm, the property now feels even more like the storybook setting couples crave. “From the moment your guests arrive, they’ll feel like they’ve stepped into a storybook setting curated just for them; one filled with warmth, hospitality, and unforgettable moments.”

for relaxation before or after the big day,” said Melissa Chambers, Director of Catering. At Ross Bridge, you can create a unique experience to match your style, whether it be a round of golf with your girls, a bridesmaids' tea, or a combination of both. “Every touchpoint is designed to make your wedding weekend feel like a luxurious, all-inclusive retreat,” she said. It is easy to see why couples fall in love with that idea. With multiple spaces to choose from, Ross Bridge makes it easy for couples to shape their weekend exactly how they want.

What makes Ross Bridge so appealing is how effortless it feels for both couples and their guests. Everything from the ceremony space to the farewell brunch can happen on the same beautiful property. That means no coordinating shuttles, no stressing about transportation, and no guests For the main celebration, the Grand frantically entering addresses into Ballroom offers soaring ceilings, their phones between events. sparkling chandeliers, and plenty of room for dining and dancing. For couples wanting to round out the weekend with special activities, the resort’s team handles that too. “We specialize in creating one-ofa-kind experiences tailored to each couple’s vision,” said Rachel Pace, Event Manager. The team can also coordinate welcome parties, rehearsal dinners, poolside gatherings, and those lingering farewell brunches that guests never forget. Because most guests want to stay on-site, Ross Bridge offers easy roomblock options. Couples can reserve a set of rooms at preferred rates, and the staff handles everything from reservations to welcome gifts. “At Ross Bridge, we want our wedding guests to focus on enjoying every moment while our ambassadors take care of every detail in between,” McKinney said. When it comes to planning a celebration with a destination feel, Chambers had one final piece of advice: choose a place that feels like home for your guests. “Our all-in-one resort layout eliminates the need for transportation between venues,” she said. With so many amenities, it is easy to create a weekend that is seamless, authentic, and deeply memorable. “Above all,” she added, “choose a venue that reflects your story.” At Ross Bridge, celebrations unfold beautifully and wedding weekends turn into treasured memories from the moment guests arrive.

SERENITY & SELF-CARE

Calm your mind and body at the Spa Reserve at Wind Creek Wetumpka. For many brides, the wedding weekend begins long before the music, the flowers and the walk down the aisle. It often starts in a quiet room filled with soft light, calming scents and a sense of anticipation that makes every moment feel special. At The Spa Reserve at Wind Creek Wetumpka, that feeling is at the heart of everything they offer. The spa is known not only for its treatments but for creating an atmosphere where brides, grooms, and their bridal parties can relax and prepare for the celebration ahead. “Your wedding day is one of the most memorable moments of your life, and we are here to make sure you look and feel your absolute best,” said Cindy Brown, Spa Reserve manager. For many couples, that reassurance sets the tone for the personalized care they experience from the moment they arrive. Unlike traditional spas that offer fixed wedding-day packages, the Spa Reserve takes a more thoughtful approach. Every bridal group is different, and the team believes each celebration deserves its own plan. “While we do not offer pre-set spa packages, we would be

delighted to schedule a personalized consultation with the bride,” Brown said. “This allows us to design a luxurious and memorable experience tailored specifically for her and the bridal party to make their special day even more extraordinary during their time with us.” These consultations help brides shape the kind of experience they want to share with their closest friends and family. Some choose quiet mornings filled with facials, massages and soft conversation. Others prefer a lively, celebratory atmosphere as they enjoy body treatments or gather in shared spaces before the festivities begin. Whatever the preference, the spa’s goal is to create a relaxing start to the weekend. Skincare is one of the most-requested areas of focus, and the Spa Reserve makes it easy for brides to feel confident about their glow. “We offer a complimentary consultation with one of our highly trained aestheticians, who will analyze your skin and recommend the perfect treatments to achieve a flawless, radiant look for your special day,” Brown said. benefit from having expert guidance during the months leading up to the wedding, especially when they want their skin to look its best for photos. The spa also offers a variety of luxurious body treatments that help release tension and create a sense of renewal. “We provide body treatments designed to prepare your skin, release toxins and leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed, and absolutely glowing for your big day,” Brown said. Brides often describe these treatments as the moment when the stress of planning finally melts away. Grooms are never overlooked at the Spa Reserve. Many make it a part of their own pre-wedding ritual, sometimes solo and sometimes with groomsmen. “We have not forgotten the groom,” Brown said. “He can start with a relaxation massage or opt for our Power Play Massage to work out any tension before the big day.” To complete the experience, Brown recommends the spa’s signature men’s facial. “Follow up with our Mandatory Facial, a revitalizing, moisturizing and anti-aging treatment tailored to his unique skin care goals, helping him look sharp and feel confident when it matters most,” she said. Because the spa is a popular destination for both locals and guests staying at the resort, Brown encourages bridal parties to plan ahead. “Due to high demand on weekends, we kindly ask that bridal parties book at least three months in advance,” she said. Weekday appointments also remain a favorite option for couples seeking a more flexible schedule. At The Spa Reserve, the days leading up to the wedding are treated with as much care as the wedding day itself. Whether it is a relaxing morning for the bride, a moment of calm for the groom, or a shared experience for the entire wedding party, the spa creates a space where memories begin to form quietly and beautifully.

Tucked into the scenic community of Pike Road, The Chapel at The Waters feels like a place made for love stories. Couples often describe an immediate sense of calm and charm, a blend of elegant architecture, and peaceful Southern scenery that sets the tone for unforgettable celebrations. “Imagine arriving at a timeless white chapel perched atop a gently sloping hill and surrounded by a charming community in Pike Road, Alabama,” said Laura Walter, owner of The Chapel at The Waters. With stately front columns, a soaring steeple and panoramic lake views, the chapel offers a picture-perfect backdrop from the very beginning. Inside, guests enter through double French doors into a foyer with a barrel ceiling and chandelier. The main venue space features tall windows, hardwood floors and a coffered ceiling, with a large picture window framing the natural beauty outside. GRAND BEAU Michael Odom of Grand Bohemian Mountain Brook shares how his team creates artful experiences. Photography by Piper Vine

For many couples, the Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook feels like a destination all its own. Known for its artistic flair and immersive experiences, the hotel blends luxury with creativity, making every wedding weekend unforgettable. Few understand that magic better than Michale Odom, the property’s catering sales manager for the past eight years. Odom’s path to the Grand Bohemian began long before the hotel opened. “I worked for Walt Disney World for 15 years, and knew about Kessler because of the Grand Bohemian Orlando,” he said. When he moved back to Birmingham, he was thrilled a Kessler property would open locally. “I knew I wanted to work for them.” His passion for planning shines through every event. “I love meeting people, and being able to plan their special days,” he said. In addition to weddings, Odom works with corporate groups, and nonprofits on conferences and galas. He attributes much of the hotel’s success to his team. “We have a great team at the Grand Bohemian Mountain Brook who are very knowledgeable, and take pride in what they do. Teamwork is what I take pride in most.” That teamwork was tested during one memorable wedding. A couple planned a church ceremony, followed by a reception at the hotel, but a storm knocked out power just before the event. “Most of the items had been prepared, but not all,” Odom said. The team quickly set up a large outdoor

FLOWER & FARM Stylist Vicka Hansen and Courtney Willingham, owner of Town Creek Field and Farm, share their floral perspectives. Photography by GREDDINS

Vicka Hansen

For Vicka Hansen, floral design is about more than arranging blooms; it is about telling a story, reflecting the seasons, and bringing a couple’s vision to life. "I like to think of my style as garden inspired and playful while still being elegant,” she says. “I love to bring the outside into the space to make things feel cohesive and organic to the season.” Whether designing an intimate bouquet or a grand installation, Hansen’s work is defined by a thoughtful attention to detail and a deep respect for nature’s rhythm. Certain flowers hold a personal resonance for Hansen. “I have to start with tulips. They are my favorite because they remind me of my childhood in Ukraine. I knew when the tulips came up, spring was on the way. I love all the seasons, but there is something so promising in the growth of spring,” she says. That connection to memory and the changing seasons informs every arrangement she creates, giving her designs an emotional depth as well as visual beauty. Hansen’s vision extends beyond her personal style to the unique personality of each couple. “I love nice things. I love elegant, thoughtful design in my personal life. I want to design for clients with that same mindset. My goal is that they understand the quality of floral design as art that will complete their vision,” she says. She sees her work as a collaboration, helping couples express their individuality while ensuring every element feels intentional and cohesive.

Town Creek Field & Farm

For Courtney Willingham, flower farming is both a passion and a form of therapy. As the owner of Town Creek Field and Farm, she has transformed a piece of land into a flourishing haven of seasonal blooms, combining her love of nature with her dedication to highquality floral design. “Town Creek Field and Farm came about after I spent five years working at a local sustainable farm, The Farm at Windy Hill, in Mentone, then another two years working for Wolf Thicket Farm in Fyffe, and volunteering at Crabtree Farms in Chattanooga off and on,” Willingham recalls. “In my time working on other farms, I absolutely fell in love with the rhythms of farming. Growing flowers was always my primary interest. My brother Chase found the land for sale where Town Creek Field and Farm is located today and encouraged me to go for it. The land was beautiful, and the opportunity to start a flower farm was difficult to pass up. I jumped in head first after purchasing the land in 2022. The beauty that flowers can bring to people’s lives is special. We grow our flowers with deep love, care, and devotion.”

Looking ahead, Hansen hopes floral design continues to evolve. “I would love to see the future where we continue to expand, and welcome new ideas by creating space to bring their personality forward,” she says. Her work demonstrates how flowers can do more than decorate a wedding. They can reflect personal histories, celebrate love, and mark the promise of new beginnings. With her artistry, each wedding becomes a living, blooming reflection of the couples she works with, filled with thoughtfulness and personal charm.

The farm produces seasonal cut flowers from March through November, or until the first frost. “The list of flowers is expansive, but some highlights include tulips in early spring, followed by peonies, ranunculus, and anemones,” Willingham shares. “Then we will start to have snapdragons, delphinium, and larkspurs, among many other spring flowers. In the warmer months, we grow dahlias, hydrangeas, cosmos, zinnias, an array of filler flowers, and many more blooms.” This variety ensures each season brings new colors, textures, and possibilities for floral arrangements. Certain blooms hold a special place in Willingham’s heart. “There are so many flowers that speak to me at different points in the seasons as a flower farmer. In spring, the tulips are most anticipated after the winter months; we are eager to see the first blooms that emerge again! They always bring so much joy. The unique

dahlia varieties that we grow are very fascinating to me and often really show out toward the end of the season when everything else is starting to end. It’s amazing that there can be such different blooms among dahlias.” For couples planning weddings, Town Creek Field and Farm offers options to suit different needs and budgets. Their full-service wedding floral design includes phone consultations, bridal bouquets, bouquets for the wedding party, aisle arrangements, table arrangements, and other floral installations. “We require a minimum order of $2,000 for our full-service option. When possible, we include as many flowers that are grown here at our farm in our floral design work. We love to work with our flowers and let them guide us as we make arrangements.” Looking to the future of wedding floral design, Willingham sees a continued emphasis on unique, whimsical, and locally sourced flowers. “In my opinion, I see the future of wedding floral design continuing to utilize interesting and unique blooms with a whimsical design aesthetic. I think that more and more designers will choose to purchase from local growers because the blooms that we can provide are high-quality and do not require lengthy transportation, as flowers that are purchased through wholesale avenues do.” For Willingham, flower farming is about more than aesthetics – it’s about connection. “Flower farming has become very therapeutic for me, and I love sharing this passion with others through growing flowers,” she says. Through Town Creek Field and Farm, she offers couples not just arrangements, but living artistry that brings beauty and joy to weddings of every style and season.

THE FAMILY STORE A mother-daughter team honors a family legacy at McClendon Bridals. Photography by Piper Vine

McClendon Bridals in Sylacauga began as a dream rooted in family and a passion for bridal fashion. Owner Kim McClendon Duck fondly remembers her father, Joe “McClendon” Duck, who ran a jewelry store in their hometown for decades. “Growing up, I have the fondest memories of watching him connect with customers and work hard behind the scenes to keep his small business going,” Kim says. After her father passed in 2011, Kim finished her corporate career but knew she wanted to stay active. Reviving her father’s building while making a positive impact on the community seemed like the perfect next adventure. The store offers brides a personalized, intentional, and joyful experience. “We want our brides to truly feel like a queen in a private, luxurious space, all while finding a gorgeous gown at a great price,” Kim says. Every bridal appointment is private and tailored, with suites accommodating up to ten guests. Brides meet one-on-one with an experienced consultant for up to two hours to discuss their wedding vision, explore gowns, and receive custom styling advice. “While our consultants select gowns for our brides, each bride has access to view our full collection,” says Ginger, Kim’s daughter and coowner. “Sometimes a bride discovers new preferences by trying styles she might not have considered. We work with amazing designers and can customize gowns, rush shipments, and accessorize with jewelry, veils, and more.

82 PROFILES

Ginger says her favorite moments are the connections the store fosters. “The tender moments between brides and their family and friends are what make this work so special. The mother who sheds tears when we veil her daughter, the sister who flies in from out of state to surprise everyone, the daughter who beams at her mom in a white dress – it is incredibly rewarding to witness women feel beautiful as they share their love story.” Working together as mother and daughter makes the venture even more meaningful. “I’m grateful to do something I love alongside my mother,” Ginger says. “Her strong work ethic, determination, and perseverance have always inspired me. Most people never take the chance, and I’m so glad she did.” For the McClendons, the most rewarding part is keeping their family’s

story alive. “My grandfather did more than sell jewelry. He was an advocate for entrepreneurship, family-owned businesses, and our beautiful town,” Ginger says. “It is so rewarding to know that we’re continuing his legacy.”

THE SCIENCE OF AESTHETICS Dr. Holly Gunn of Gunn Dermatology creates an inviting space where medical practice marries spa services. Photography by Piper Vine

For brides and mothers preparing for one of life’s most memorable days, radiant, healthy skin is often top of mind. Dr. Holly Gunn, owner of Gunn Dermatology in Mountain Brook, knows that achieving that glow isn’t only about aesthetics; it’s about combining expert dermatologic care with a calming experience. “Advanced dermatologic care doesn’t have to feel clinical,” Gunn says. “We intentionally designed Gunn Dermatology to blend the two worlds: cutting-edge lasers, injectables, and medical treatments delivered in a setting that feels warm, soothing, and elevated. It allows patients, especially brides, to achieve transformative results without sacrificing the calming experience they love.” Her practice uniquely combines medical and cosmetic dermatology under one roof, giving clients a truly integrated approach. “Patients will get the best results when we blend medical and cosmetic treatments,” Gunn explains. “Many brides and mothers come in with concerns like acne, rosacea, or pigmentation, and we can address those medical issues while also planning aesthetic treatments that enhance their natural beauty for the big day. This integrated approach creates better outcomes, a smoother treatment timeline, and a truly personalized experience.” From the moment clients walk through the doors, Gunn aims to provide a welcoming, exceptional experience. “We want every client to feel instantly embraced,” she says. “Our approach blends holistic care with medical science, creating a space where

86 PROFILES

patients feel both understood and expertly treated. Whether someone is here for acne, injectables, or pre-wedding glow treatments, the experience should feel warm, intentional, and truly exceptional.” Wedding planning can be stressful, and Gunn notes that skin often reflects that stress. Her advice for brides is to prepare early and surround yourself with trusted experts. “The best way to minimize wedding anxiety is to prevent it with a solid plan,” she says. “If anything unexpected comes up, you already have a team in place who knows how to guide you through it.” For brides and mothers planning ahead, Gunn recommends a timeline to ensure optimal results. She suggests starting 9 to 12 months out with a cosmetic consultation to create a customized plan and review the skincare routine, including resurfacing treatments if needed. Four to six months before the wedding, skin tightening treatments such as Vivace or SkinPen can be introduced. Three to four months out is ideal for trial Botox or filler, hydrafacials, oxygen facials, dermaplane, and IPL treatments to target pigmentation or redness. Botox touch-ups are best scheduled six weeks before the big day, with hydrafacials, oxygen facials, and dermaplane treatments reserved for the week of the wedding. With careful planning and a holistic approach, Dr. Gunn helps clients feel confident and radiant from the inside out. Achieving glowing, healthy skin does not have to be stressful; it can be an experience to enjoy.

KEEPING THE SHOPPE Teamwork is the cornerstone of success for these woman-owned businesses.

Olexa's Café, Cakes, & Catering

For more than 25 years, Olexa’s Café in Mountain Brook, has been a place where food, family, and community come together. Diane Olexa, the heart and soul of the café, continues the legacy of her mother, Marilyn, whose dream was to create recipes that made loved ones’ hearts happy. “She loved people and loved serving and feeding people,” Diane says. “Her dream was to have a restaurant where the community could enjoy food, family, and friends in a heartwarming atmosphere. Her legacy lives on when we hear, ‘Oh, this is delicious,’ or ‘This is my favorite soup,’ or ‘This is the best cake ever!’” Teamwork is central to the café’s success. “We are proud to say we have staff who have been with us for more than 17 years, as well as staff who have returned after school or moved back to town,” Diane explains. “We all work together, and it’s so apparent that we all have the same heartbeat of caring about our customers’ special events, whether it be designing a cake or planning a party. It takes a team to turn their buttercream dreams into a special, memorable, and delicious event.”

Diane works closely with brides to design cakes that complement each bride’s vision, from the gown to the venue, flowers, and color palette. “Weddings are celebratory. We are meant to gather, to acknowledge, to celebrate, and support one another in our most special lifetime events,” she says. Every cake is crafted to inspire and bring a bride’s dream celebration to life, ensuring that each creation becomes a centerpiece as magical as the day itself. Every team member Olexa’s contributes to the experience, from the bakery staff to servers, hostesses, and the dishwashers. Diane shares, “Knowing they are part of a big picture creating memories for guests’ celebrations makes us all feel like we have a part in their joys of life and love.” Their dedication ensures that every meal, every cake, and every event is handled with care, creativity, and heart. At Olexa’s Café, every cake, dish, and smile carries forward a legacy of love, care, and unforgettable celebrations that delight both the eyes and the palate.

“We carry the largest selection of bridesmaid designers, colors, fabrics, and styles you can shop in-person in Alabama. Almost anything our brides can dream of, we can make happen. We love seeing inspiration pictures, swatches, floral designs, and all your Instagram saves to ensure the perfect look for each wedding.”

Photo: Sweet Home Studios

The team is intentional about the designers they work with. Boudreaux says, “We only work with designers who offer a wide range of sizes and options that work for different body types. We have our go-to styles that flatter almost everyone, but we also love when brides select a few different styles so each bridesmaid can look and feel her best.” Once the bride chooses the style and color, bridesmaids schedule appointments to get fitted. The team takes time to get to know each bridesmaid, offering personalized advice and support throughout the process.

Bella Bridesmaids Birmingham For Jordan Boudreaux, owning and leading Bella Bridesmaids Birmingham is the culmination of a decade-long journey in the wedding industry. “I have been with Bella Bridesmaids for 10 years,” Boudreaux says. “I started working part time as a stylist in South Louisiana, where I’m originally from, and quickly moved up to store manager. When my husband and I moved to Birmingham in 2020, I was very lucky to get connected with Charlotte and Jeana Lee. They were looking for help at Bella Bridesmaids at the same time I was seeking work. We have always said it was God that brought us together at the right time.”

After the birth of her daughter in 2021, Boudreaux stepped into ownership as Charlotte and Jeana Lee were ready for their next chapter. “I’m so honored to continue the beautiful tradition of superior customer service and toptier fashion that Bella Bridesmaids has brought to Birmingham for the last 18 years,” she says. Boudreaux and her team take pride in helping bridal parties navigate differing body types, styles, and budgets. “Each appointment is paired with a personal stylist, so we can listen and take to heart the things that matter most to the bride and bridesmaids,” she explains.

Boudreaux’s own style and years of experience influence the store’s offerings. “I love talking with brides to see what they are looking forward to and track upcoming trends. I also remind them to stay true to what they believe is beautiful, regardless of current trends,” she says. Collaborating with designers allows her to bring new colors and styles to market, blending expert design with real-world insight into what brides and bridesmaids actually want. She recommends starting the bridesmaid dress process 9 to 12 months before the wedding. “Our designers take 12 to 20 weeks to deliver dresses, and we suggest leaving extra time for alterations. For brides starting late or with large bridal parties, we know trusted designers who can meet tighter timelines,” Boudreaux says. She also advises keeping the guest list small for the initial appointment to maintain focus on the bride’s vision. At Bella Bridesmaids Birmingham, every dress selection is about creating confidence, beauty, and memories that last a lifetime. Boudreaux and her team help ensure every bridal party leaves feeling ready for the big day. alabamaweddings.com

LADIES OF LEGACY Trailblazers of the Alabama wedding industry. Photography by Piper Vine

Here in Alabama, three women have shaped decades of celebration, creativity, and hospitality. Susan Mason of B&A Warehouse, Kathy G. Mezrano of Kathy G. and Company, and Dorothy McDaniel of Dorothy McDaniel’s Flower Market have each charted a path defined by a deep commitment to the couples they serve. Their stories are different, yet their influence is collectively woven into Alabama's wedding landscape. Susan Mason: Hosting with Southern Hospitality At B&A Warehouse, Susan Mason found her calling in a place where hospitality and creativity collide. Her introduction to the wedding world came unexpectedly

90 PROFILES

when the late Art Durkee recognized her potential and encouraged her to step into a broader role. “Walking in the doors of B&A Warehouse and having Art Durkee see something in me that changed my life and the direction of this venue,” Mason said. “His trust and faith gave me the opportunity to be creative and take risks.” Those risks included investing in equipment, linens, and staff to elevate both the catering and the event experience. Mason wanted clients to feel cared for, supported, and celebrated. “We feel that it is an honor and privilege to be trusted as the caterer and sometimes the venue for their special day,” she said.

As a self-described dream maker, Mason believes her role is to help couples bring their vision to life. She considers budget, taste, personality, and priorities, then works to shape an event that feels both meaningful and achievable.

“My friends frequently asked me to make arrangements for them and I did so happily. However, as the numbers grew, I decided I would have to go into business or out of friends,” McDaniel said.

One of her most memorable stories involves a groom who proposed to his future bride in B&A’s Bottle Room, the same space where they first met. Mason later hosted their wedding and reception, completing a full-circle celebration that still brings her joy.

She opened her first shop in a tiny 12-by-12 room inside a house on Linden Avenue in Homewood. She bought a Pepsi-Cola cooler, painted flowers over the logo, and set up for business. Within months, she moved to Homewood’s main street, and soon after, a friend asked her to design her daughter’s wedding flowers. McDaniel agreed, unaware that this one event would spark a career in weddings.

Her advice to those entering the field is direct and heartfelt. “Never think of the wedding industry as a job,” she said. “Being part of this industry in any capacity should be a calling. You must be passionate about meeting the needs of others, and above all, listen to their dreams.” Kathy G. Mezrano: Culinary Artistry with Purpose As one of Alabama’s premier caterers, Kathy G. Mezrano has long believed that food is a foundational part of celebration. Her company, Kathy G. and Company, is known for combining excellent hospitality with elevated culinary presentation, and her guiding philosophy has always centered on honor and service. For Mezrano, weddings are never routine. Each event offers a chance to innovate, refine, and celebrate. “It is a challenge that never grows old,” she said. “Witnessing the joy and satisfaction of clients on their wedding day can be incredibly rewarding and keeps the passion for catering and designing weddings alive.” Her success has been shaped not only by talent but by strong relationships. Vendors, venues, and clients form an extended network that supports creativity and consistency. To stay ahead in an ever-evolving field, Mezrano and her team attend educational workshops and industry conferences, keeping up with shifts in food trends and presentation styles. From visually striking displays to menus tailored to region, heritage, or personal taste, Mezrano has turned catering into a form of storytelling. Her work reflects a deep understanding of how food enhances the celebration. “The opportunity to bring together delicious cuisine with beautiful presentation that reflects the couple’s personality and style is a most gratifying experience,” said Mezrano. “It’s the challenge that never grows old. Witnessing the joy and satisfaction of clients on their wedding day can be incredibly rewarding and keeps the passion for catering and designing weddings alive.” Dorothy McDaniel: A Life in Flowers For more than four decades, Dorothy McDaniel has been synonymous with floral artistry in Birmingham. Her career began more casually than the business that bloomed later.

“I had not really thought about doing weddings, but after the first one my business kept growing,” McDaniel said. “The fact that every wedding is different and challenging has sustained my interest, and the heartfelt thanks from brides and their families has sustained my passion.” McDaniel has witnessed the evolution of the wedding industry firsthand. Early in her career, ceremonies and receptions were usually held in churches or private clubs. With no wedding planners in Birmingham at the time, florists often handled not only flowers but tablecloths, display items, and various décor elements. “Today, however, there are a large number of services including furniture rentals, draping, and lighting to mention a few,” she said. “Execution has changed dramatically because of the diversity of vendors and what they bring to the table." Throughout her career, McDaniel has emphasized professionalism and integrity. “First, always return calls promptly. People feel slighted if they have to call you several times,” she said. She also stresses transparency, consistency, and personal connection. “Email and Zoom are good ways to communicate, but I think in-person meetings build a relationship and enable the trust that is so important to brides.” Her approach remains steadfast: be prompt, be kind, and always add a personal touch. A Collective Impact Mason, Mezrano, and McDaniel have shaped Alabama weddings with a blend of creativity and purpose. They’ve guided countless couples with steady expertise and genuine care. Through their work, they’ve created lasting memories, inspired those entering the field, and helped strengthen the industry as a whole. Their stories remind us that weddings are more than events. They reflect community and kindness, shaped by women who devote themselves to turning dreams into reality for couples across Alabama. alabamaweddings.com

124 REAL WEDDINGS

“The Chapel at The Waters has always held a special place in my heart. I was the very first flower girl there years ago, and getting married in the same chapel, wearing the same pearl necklace, felt like a full-circle moment. I grew up in the neighborhood, so every detail carried deep meaning. Seeing God's sovereignty and providence woven throughout it all was such a gift. For the reception, I wore my mom's wedding dress, cut short for a fun and sentimental touch. My advice to other brides is to make your day your own. Choose what's meaningful to you, not just what everyone else does.” Kat

We went for a walk in Jamison Park after church one day and little did I know Ivan had picked out a spot by the creek with a little bench and wisteria all around and he got down on one knee! On our wedding day, we had another coffee date at the same O’Henry’s in between our ceremony and reception. We sat and relaxed at the same table where we met almost four years prior.” Virginia

“My advice would be to not seek perfection. Don’t be afraid to be different, pursue the things that make you happy. Let the wedding represent who y’all are. A lot of people ask me where the colors from the girls’ dresses came from. They all wore the color that I wore in their wedding. I was a little nervous that it wouldn’t be as pretty in real life as it was in my head, but it exceeded what I imagined in every way and I love the meaning it holds for me and my girls.” Mary

“My best advice is to be intentional and add sentimental touches wherever you can – they make the day so much more personal. One of my favorite details at our wedding was a nod to Hanan’s grandmother, who loved peach Bellinis. On my first trip with his family, we went to the same restaurant where she had her first Bellini decades earlier, and I learned that we shared that love. So when it came time to choose our signature cocktails, peach Bellinis felt like the perfect fit." Jessica alabamaweddings.com

“We met online on Bumble. Almost two years after our first date at Marble Ring, Jeffrey tricked me into thinking we were meeting his boss there for a drink before dinner at Bottega. “Parker and I met at the end of our sophomore year of college at Auburn University. Parker asked me to be his girlfriend in front of the legendary lathe on Auburn’s campus. “Trust your wedding planner and the process you’ve built together. By the time your big day arrives, everything is already in motion, so let go and allow your team to handle the details. Focus entirely on your partner and the joy of the moment. Things may not go exactly as planned, but none of that will matter when you’re fully present with the person you love. ALABAMA VENUE GUIDE

“It started as a casual night out with friends before visiting a few art galleries. While we were sitting in the lounge, this man walked in and immediately caught my attention – there was something about the confidence in his walk and, honestly, his jawline. My friend whispered for me to stay focused, but as fate would have it, he walked over and asked if he could sit with us since there were no other seats. Of course, I said yes. His name was Kevin. We talked, flirted a little, and later I nervously invited him to join us at the galleries. He said he was waiting on someone, so I assumed the worst and made a very graceful exit. Weeks later, he found me on LinkedIn asking about that night. Turns out he’d even left me a voicemail asking me out – one I never listened to. Instead of giving up, Kevin tracked me down and asked again. Talk about a pursuit!" Sheyda alabamaweddings.com

"If at all possible, I highly suggest having a wedding planner. There is so much that goes into throwing a celebration of the covenant of marriage that it can be really easy to get lost in all the logistics and details. The wedding should be a day to truly celebrate and enjoy, and for us knowing we could relax into the moment knowing our planners were handling all the moving pieces was invaluable" Hannah

Dalvey, Pocket Watch, Compass and Albert Gift Set $566

“Odd things happen to all of us on our way through life without our noticing for a time that they have happened.” J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

Time is the most valuable thing we possess as human beings. I think about how quickly the last twenty-five years have flown by, and wonder where we will be when the calendar reaches 2050. If time holds a miracle, you and I will continue to surround ourselves with love – from friends, from family, and most importantly, from ourselves. I leave you with meaningful sentiment I learned from famed relationship therapist Esther Perel: love is a choice. Love is a verb, not a noun. Love is something that we do, not something that happens to us. Wake up every day and choose to love. When time is no more, every choice of love becomes your legacy. x, C
