KALIBO, Aklan, (PIA) -- The kick-off of World Blood Donors month in Aklan, July 3, had 119 successf blood donors. Held at City Mall Kalibo, the whole day activity was led by the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), Provincial Health Office, Department of Health and Aklan Blood Coordinating Council (ABCC) with the support of the Rotary International District 3850 Rotary Clubs of Kalibo and Metro Kalibo, Metro Kalibo Community Rotaract Club and local government unit of Kalibo. Blood donors, who came for the event, were of varied ages, a few first timers and some regular donors coming from the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, groups like Brotherhood of Aklan Riders, The Guardians, MMS Foundation, friends and family members of Rotary, Kalibonhons and some walk-in individuals, according to ABCC president Melrose Lunn. Prior to the bloodletting, Dr. Felma de Cruz of the Aklan Medical Society (AMS) and in behalf of the ABCC, gave a short orientation on the importance of donating blood as well as the do’s and and don’ts for people planning to donate blood. On the other hand, Rotary District 3850 governor Raphy Tayco said that his
legacy project in his stint as Rotary governor aims to help the PRC collect quality blood supply. Both non-government organizations recently forged a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) about this initiative, according to Lunn. The Philippine Red Cross, together with the PHO, DOH and other partners, are targeting to collect sufficient supply of blood to save lives of Aklanons, especially those sick with dengue; victims of vehiclular accidents; those undergoing dialysis and medical operations; and other health issues. The launching was an offshoot of Resolution No. 2019-05, Series of 2019 crafted by PAC-PTD during an emergency meeting called by the group and held July 7 at the Conference Hall of the APPO to help devise ways to control the rising cases of dengue in Aklan. As of this writing and as recorded by the Aklan Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance and Response Unit (APESRU), dengue cases in Aklan have reached 2,171 with 15 deaths. MAD, according to Aklan BAGHAY president Ramel Buncalan, is an advocacy program to help fight dengue in the province by soliciting the unity and cooperation of the Aklanon community.
