government of Malay, Aklan, happened on May 30 to 31, according to Salome David, assistant provincial agriculturist. David said the Month of the Ocean is celebrated annually in the Philippines in May by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 57 issued in 1999. According to David, the theme of this year’s observance is “Stand Up, Save our Reefs” which emphasizes the cause and effect relationship of the Filipinos’ action towards the environment and the ecosystem services and goods that the oceans provide to create a flourishing environment. “In light of the current issues in our coral reefs, we are also highlighting the need to make a stand and save our frontline barriers against coastal calamities,” David added. Prior to the Boracay underwater clean-up, a short program was conducted on the first day of the activity at the Bantay Dagat Post in Tabon Port, Caticlan, Malay, followed by a series of activities. An information education campaign (IEC) activity was also conducted in coordination with BFAR to promote clean ocean; marine resource sustainability; and to increase the appreciation and understanding of the public about the various programs and projects especially on coastal and marine environment with primary focus on endangered shells.
