Berkeley Adult School, established in 1881, is part of the Berkeley Unified School District, a member of the Northern Alameda Consortium for Adult Education, and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION (CE)

Registration is required for all Community Education (CE) Classes.

Classes listed with a room number are scheduled to meet in person. Check our website for the latest information about class locations. Students registered for online classes can expect a Zoom link for a course ~ 24 hours before the first class and again about an hour before the first class.

Classes are canceled if the minimum number of students is not reached two days BEFORE the first class session.

Mountain Dulcimer is easy & fun to play. You’ll be playing a tune from the beginning! MOUNTAIN DULCIMER 2

For players with some familiarity with their instrument. You will explore scales, finger-dexterity exercises, chords, and at least two tunings. New tunes will be presented each week in the chordmelody and cross-string techniques. Ornaments, such as hammers, pulls, and slides, will be incorporated into lessons & applied to tunes.

*Prerequisites: Comfort with tuning and tablature, some melody tune experience, understanding of fretting and basic strums, and a nodding acquaintance with chords. You will also need your own instrument.

While classes are designed to focus on the needs of people 55+, all adults 18 and older are welcome to enroll.

Diverse programs for older adults are offered online and at various locations through Berkeley. Courses in this program develop skills and knowledge that enhance the quality of life of each participant and the community.

ART AND CIVILIZATION: EUROPE OF THE HIGH RENAISSANCE

Survey the art and architecture of the Renaissance, with artists such as Michealangelo, Holbein, Durer, Bosch, Breughel and Botticelli, in the context of the revolutionary cultural change and discoveries of Columbus, Queen Elizabeth, the Médicis, Luther and the Spanish Empire. FOUR STEPS REGISTRATION & ENROLLMENT PROCESS

1. Complete the online registration form online or in-person at BAS. (Only NEW students need to fill out the registration form. You are considered NEW, if you did not attend BAS for the Fall 2024 semester.) If you are NEW, click on the black ‘Register Now’ button - after you complete the form, you will receive an automated email from “registration@asaponlinereg.com”. (Check your spam or junk mail folder if you do not see it in your inbox.)

New students: Please submit your high school transcripts to our office. You may email transcripts to joanneriverabalino@berkeley.net or betseyhoyt@berkeley.net. This is highly recommended before meeting with our counselor.

2. Attend an ORIENTATION & CASAS TESTING SESSION. The CASAS testing and Orientation is held at the 1939 Ward Street location. Allow up to 3 hours for the orientation testing as they are required before students can enroll in classes. Both are required before students can enroll in classes. See the website for exact dates, bas.berkeleyschools.net.

Immediately after your orientation session, take the CASAS Reading Assessment to determine your proficiency level in English. Allow about 90 minutes for the test. There are alternative dates to take the CASAS as well.

3. Take TWO additional assessments online (either at school or from home): an Intake Questionnaire & Writing Sample and a Math placement test. (The links to these assessments are emailed to you after you register. They are also on our website.)

4. Get enrolled in classes. Schedule an appointment with the academic counselor, Betsey Hoyt, to enroll in classes and plan the educational program that best meets your needs. (The appointment link is emailed to you after you register. It is also on our website). Once you are enrolled, Ms. Hoyt will give you the schedule with the location of your classes.

INTEGRATED SCIENCE

What does it mean to be alive? While this question may be unanswered and have opposing views in a philosophical sense, the biological definition of being alive is quite straightforward! Topics include introductory coursework in ecology,

genetics, human health/disease, cells, and nutrition/toxicology. This course is geared towards students who have limited background knowledge in science and would like to learn more about various overarching scientific topics!

How does our human body work? In this course, you will learn about the human body systems. We will explore how we sense and perceive the world around us. We will also study how our body moves, functions, and develops over the course of our lifespan!

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA: INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM

Are you motivated and able to study and complete assignments on your own? If yes, our Independent Study program might be right for you! All courses required for a high school diploma can be taken independently. Students meet once a week with an instructor who monitors their progress. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

ESL classes offer language learners a foundation in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students have the opportunity to build their vocabulary and conversational skills in an environment that cultivates community and connection.

ESL enrollment, testing, and in-person classes are located at 1939 Ward Street, Berkeley :

1. Register at the Main Office and take CASAS tests.

2. Students are enrolled in the appropriate ESL class, and given the teacher’s name, class time and room number.

3 If the class is currently full, students will be added to a waitlist and contacted by the school when space is available

ESL CLASS SCHEDULES

For students who want to enroll and attend online classes, via Zoom:

1. Students register at the main office and take CASAS tests.

2. Students are enrolled in the appropriate ESL class.

3. Assigned teacher will welcome you with an email including class Zoom link and time.

4. Online classes are offered in the morning and in the evening, but not in the afternoon.

*Online students need a working email account, preferably Gmail. If needed, online students may borrow a Chromebook from the BAS office.

WAITING LISTS

Classes sometimes become full (too many students). In this case, students are placed on a waiting list. When the class has room, students on waiting lists receive a phone call or email from the teacher inviting them to attend.

ATTENDING CLASS

If you stop coming to a class, or did not start class the next week after you registered, we will drop you from the class. If you want to come back, email your teacher. If your work schedule or family responsibilities change and make it hard to come to class regularly, talk to your teacher about transferring to a class at a different time.

SATURDAY CLASSES

■ Saturday classes meet one day only unless specified otherwise.

■ Classes scheduled from 8:00 or 9:00 am to 4:00 pm have a 1-hour lunch break.

■ HiSET® Testing occurs the first Saturday of each month (except in January and April 2025). Check ged.com or hiset.ets. org for more information.

■ Students must have basic computer skills for courses with asterisks ( * ).

ADMISSION AND ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENT

Classes are open to adults (must be 18 or older) regardless of residency or citizenship.

Berkeley Adult School classes are for people who live in Berkeley and the surrounding communities. Funding for these classes comes from the State of California. We cannot serve people who live outside of California.

CHILDREN

Children are not permitted in any Berkeley Adult School class. Adult School students who bring children to class will be asked to take their children home.

SPRING REGISTRATION SCHEDULE (WHAT

ABOUT IN-PERSON REGISTRATION?)

■ Online registration begins 12/14/24.

■ Phone registration begins 1/6/25 (1:00-3:00pm).

FEDERALLY FUNDED CLASSES

Classes supported by federal funding (Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, English as a Second Language) have no registration fees.

CLASS SIZE/CLASS CLOSURE POLICY

CTE, Life-Long Learning, and Community Education class fees vary. Classes with low enrollment (fewer than 15 students) or low attendance may be canceled. In the event of a class cancellation, full refunds will be given.

REFUND POLICY FOR CAREER TECH ED, COMMUNITY ED, AND SATURDAY CLASSES

Please select classes carefully. Refunds requested by students will be given up to one business day before the start of the first class meeting. After that, no refunds or transfers of fees will be issued.

TRANSPORTATION

■ Bus: BAS is accessible by AC Transit bus.

■ BART: BAS is within walking distance of North Berkeley BART, and Ashby station.

■ Driving: Follow guidance posted on street signs for where, when, and how long to park. Restrictions for on-street parking are set by the California Vehicle Code and by section 14 of the Berkeley Municipal Code.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS

Students who need special accommodations due to a disability should call (510) 644-6130 to make a request at least two weeks in advance.

LAPTOP LOAN PROGRAM

We have a limited number of Chromebook computers available for adult students participating in BAS classes.

Registered students or their legal guardians agree to hold Berkeley Unified School District free and harmless from any claim or expense that may arise because of participation in Berkeley Adult School program(s). Berkeley Unified School District does not carry medical insurance for its students.

LEARNING SPECIALIST SERVICES

The BAS Learning Specialist supports all students with distance learning and works particularly close with students who have learning disabilities. For questions, please contact our office or email Eva Bowler at evamarlatt@ berkeley.net. Meetings are scheduled at the student’s convenience and occur on Zoom.

COMPLAINT PROCEDURES

In accordance with state guidelines, the District has adopted Uniform Complaint Procedures. These shall be followed when addressing complaints alleging unlawful discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or failure to comply with state and federal laws related to Adult Basic Education programs, Consolidated Categorical programs, Career Technical Education programs, and Special Education programs. A copy of Uniform Complaint Procedures may be obtained from the Main Office.

VISA/AU PAIR INFORMATION

Berkeley Adult School is not a postsecondary institution. Hours of attendance at this school do not fulfill the educational requirements of any contract that requires attendance at a postsecondary institution, such as Au Pair contracts or visa requirements.
