Lexicon AIAS On the 30th of November 1990, the ›International Association of Independent Art and Design Schools‹ (AIAS) was founded in the Bauhaus, Dessau, GER. This Association was an initiative of the Schule für Gestaltung in Basel and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. The aim is to re-enforce and strengthen the contacts between the participating institutions, all of which are schools of higher education with strong traditions and high standards of quality, which can contribute to the internationalisation of education in the arts. Currently the director of the AKI is president of this orgnisation. AKI Originally stood for Academy for Art and Industry. The AKI was founded in 1949, and has been located in a former chemistry lab on the campus of the University of Twente since 1998. Its present name is ArtEZ AKI, the Enschede Academy of Visual Arts. AKI-ArtEZ Festival Every year the AKI organises a series of General Studies – as part of dAcapo ArtEZ General Studies – in which experts illuminate the theme of the year in the form of lectures, presentations and workshops. ArtEZ The AKI, the Protestant Academy for Art (CABK) Zwolle, and the Academy for Art and Design Arnhem (ABKVA) combine to form the Art and Design faculty. The faculty is part of ArtEZ, Polytechnic for the Arts. ArtEZ provides education in art, design, architecture, music, dance and theatre in Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle. With some 2800 students and more than 600 members of staff, ArtEZ is one of the largest independent institutes of higher professional education in the Netherlands. International office The International office of the AKI, which was set up by the student dean, has been an independent office within the AKI since 2003. It cooperates with 45 academies at an international level. This includes guest lectureships and joint projects, but most of its work is concentrated on the exchange of students inside and outside Europe. DAI The Dutch Art Institute (DAI) is a postgraduate master’s course in Autonomous Art and Art in the Public Space under the aegis of ArtEZ. A maximum of thirty young artists of various nationalities work at DAI for two years to further develop their artistry, under the supervision of artists, designers and theoreticians. The DAI is housed in the AKI in Enschede. Parttime This course is in principle equivalent to the full-time course. There are four graduation options: Painting/Drawing/Graphic; Sculpture; Mixed media; and Photography. Lectureship in Art and Technology This lectureship at the AKI explores the interface between art and technology in the form of lectures, symposia and workshops.
