OW! What a great Rodeo you Nobles and Ladies put on this year. A big thanks to each of you that had a hand in this years Rodeo. The Units, Clubs and Nobles that supported not only with your work but with your Rodeo Daddy tickets. We owe our Rodeo Chairman Chief Rabban Randy Murphy a big big thanks along with Joe Ramsey, Kenny Askew and banner sales Paul Beck. This just shows when Nobles work together for our temple it is a great success. Thanks so much.

Now as we look torward to our MASA and SASA conventions I look forward to seeing each of the Nobility there as you participate in parades and competitions. Lets have two great conventions.

Before our next HI-NOBLE we will have two more great events for our Temple. On October 19th our annual Seafood Fest will take place. Once again your temple needs your support in selling tickets and working to make this another feztastic Khedive fundraiser.

Your Units Ball will be on Saturday night November 16th following the Ceremonial that day. We will again invite our candidates to an Open House on Friday Night. We can make this a wonderful time for these new Nobles and their wives. Such a wonderful welcome to the Shrine fraternity and the philanthropy that it stands for, the support of the children we help in our 22 great Hospitals. What a great way to measure up for Khedive and the kids we stand for.

obles, the summer is moving on and I’m sure we will be glad to experience some cooler weather.

Nobles, please purchase any and all tickets that are mailed to you. Buy your tickets and come on out and have a great time at your temple. Call the office at 420-4510 if you need additional tickets for an event. This is the only way we can have a free Family Picnic for you and your children and grandchildren, a free Units and Clubs Party, a free Christmas Stag Party and last but not least, this is how we maintain our fraternity. Without a fraternity we couldn’t have the greatest Philanthropy in the world and that is the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.

Also Nobles, if you know any member who hasn’t paid his dues for 2012, talk to him about paying now.

The dues money owed for 2012 is $7869.00. The Temple has dues outstanding that total $17633.00 as of July 2013.

Dear Illustrious Sir Underdown: All of us on the Imperial Divan would like to send our appreciation to the temple leadership for participating in the most recent Imperial Session.

We appreciate your confidence in us by electing us to the positions we now hold. We will do everything to represent you and all Shrine members to the highest degree.

As we move forward with the Imperial 20132014 year, there will be nothing more important than securing the future of our fraternity. We have spent much of the past few years focusing on securing our hospitals. We will continue to provide the necessary dedication to the hospitals but now is the time we shift our focus and make our fraternity stronger than ever. This will require changes from both an Imperial and temple level.

On an Imperial level, our goal is to be more visible and accessible to our temples.

We are asking each temple to take seriously the need to focus their attention on the fraternity. In the remaining five and 1/2 months of the year, we ask that you create as many new nobles as possible and reduce your non-paid dues members by following the guidelines set forth by Shriners lnternational's membership team. For what makes Shriners Hospitals for Children different is Shriners! We are dedicated to help you improve your membership, but we need you and your leadership to also make a commitment.

llustrious Sir, Illustrious Sirs, Unit Heads, Club Presidents, Nobles and Ladies, THANK YOU…THANK YOU… THANK YOU!!! Those words cannot even come close to expressing my gratitude to the Nobles and Ladies who helped make our Annual Rodeo a HUGE success.

We had overwhelming support from all of you. This was the biggest

Rodeo we have EVER had! We had a record breaking year in attendance as well as sales, well exceeding even last year’s records. Thanks to those who paid for their tickets and returned them for distribution to our patients and their families. If you have not yet sent in the money for your tickets, it is still not too late…Especially if your tickets were used (see below).

A special thanks to Noble Joe Ramsey and Noble Kenny Askew for their countless hours, hard work and dedication.

I cannot believe half of the year has already come and gone. Your Divan just returned from Imperial, which was held in Indianapolis, IN this year. Congratulations to Imperial Sir John A. Cinotto who is our newly elected Imperial Potentate.

The next few months will be busy with our various parades, conventions and fundraisers.

Speaking of fundraisers… The Temple is going to have a spiral ham sale once again this year at a cost of $20 per ham. The cutoff date will be December 3rd with pick-up on December 18th between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. at the Temple.

These hams make wonderful Christmas gifts for family, friends, and even employees. A copy of the order form is enclosed in this issue (page 21) of the Hi-Noble. Please fill out this form and turn it in to the Temple Office along with a check for your order.

Lady Debbie and I had an excellent turn out at the 2014 cruise presentation. If you were unable to attend the presentation, it is still not too late to consider. We have packages in hand that we would be more than happy to get to you with all the detailed information. For those of you who may not have heard, we are planning on traveling to the Eastern Caribbean on the Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas from May 25 to June 1, 2014.

irst of all I would like to thank you for allowing me to be a representative for Khedive at the Imperial Session in Indianapolis in July.

It was a wonderful trip and an interesting session with discussion about many topics. The main emphasis of the entire session was MEMBERSHIP. Thanks to Chuck Schwender and Oscar Obsuna, we now have a display which will be out at all of our functions, telling our visitors about Masonry and Shrinedom. We are getting some hits on beashrinernow.com, but most of these are not Masons. We are getting them connected with the appropriate Blue Lodge and hopefully on the road to being a Shriner. We need to get out to our Blue Lodges and make our brothers aware of the Shrine and its philanthropy.

As you know our Spring Ceremonial in June brought in 30 new Nobles.

Unfortunately the Black Camel was not good to us in April and May, so we had no gain.

Our Fall Ceremonial is November 16th, and the price is $162.00, which includes $50 toward a Fez package.

Let’s get out, beat the bushes and try for 50 new Nobles this fall. We also need to be aware of any Nobles who are not active. Invite them to your Unit or Club meeting. Let’s try to get them involved.

reetings, Nobles.

During the preceding three months your elected Divan has been busy, attending parades, meetings, fundraisers and the Imperial Session. We see a lot of Nobles out at the various events working very hard to ensure their success. As the summer continues, there are many more events that beg for your participation, hope to see you at them.

In the last edition of the Hi-Noble I wrote about the importance of supporting your respective Blue Lodges and challenged each of the Units and

Clubs to attend those Lodges of their members as a group. In this edition I’d like to discuss the situation in Arkansas and the decision regarding Shrine membership in that state.

As most of you have heard by now, there is a serious divide between the Grand Lodge of Arkansas and the two Shrine Temples there.

Without repeating the details of the story, the end result is that the Grand Master in Arkansas has forced Shriners in that state to choose either Masonry or the Shrine, and has expelled from Masonry those that have chosen the Shrine.

Your Imperial Line has worked very hard to reconcile the differences, but the conditions attached to reconciliation by The Grand Lodge of Arkansas have been simply unacceptable. The end result is that Shrine membership in Arkansas has dwindled.

From a Shrine perspective, the first issue that comes to light in this debacle is patient care. If Scimitar and Saraha Shrine Temples were to close, which they are in imminent danger of having to, the ability to transport patients in Arkansas to the hospitals would be lost along with them.

The delegates attending the Imperial session in Indianapolis heard impassioned pleas from the Arkansas delegation to permit them to allow non-Masons to join the Shrine in that jurisdiction to enable

them to continue patient care. After much debate and discussion the delegation voted to permit nonMasons to join the Shrine in Arkansas.

This was a very pragmatic, patientoriented decision on the part of the delegates, and was by no means a unanimous decision. There are also some safeguards in place to ensure that we get the right kind of person into the Shrine there and to govern Arkansas Shriners who visit during tiled meetings in other jurisdiction Temples.

This issue has to make you appreciate the amity that exists between the Shrine in Virginia and our Grand Lodge. Every member of the elected line in the Grand Lodge of Virginia is a Shriner and we get superb support from that great body. It also underscores the importance of supporting our Blue Lodges, promoting the wonderful story of the Shrine in our Lodge meetings, and helping to arrest our joint membership decline.

Let’s make a concerted effort to get out and attend our Blue Lodges on a regular basis.

Philadelphia Hospital Report Lon Weber

I

t was a pleasure for your Philadelphia Hospital representative to have attended the 139th Shriners International Imperial Session in Indianapolis, IN, June 30-July 4, 2013.

One comes to more fully appreciate the Shrine’s scope of work during such an event.

Perhaps the most significant news out of Philadelphia is during the past 10 months the campaign to raise funds for the medical imaging project, $690,000.00 in donations have been received with only $26,000.00 remaining to achieve its goal! As a result of this success, the Home Office has approved the purchase of the necessary equipment. However funds are still needed for necessary building

renovations. This addition for the equipment and technology available to our medical staff vastly improves their professional capabilities and thanks are deserved to everyone who made this possible.

The work of the Philadelphia Hospital was highlighted during the Imperial Session in that two surgeons were asked to make a presentation of

their work which again suggests that the SHC-P stands out as one of the finest in the network of hospitals.

Finally, I lam pleased to report that work continues on the development of “Outreach Centers” designed to accommodate children on “follow-up” visitations at locations closer to and more convenient for appropriate appointments. Further, the Hospital is on-going with its strategic planning process that includes examining the: mission statement; vision statement; internal and external assessment; and overall goals. In other words, the hospital is not resting on its merits but continuing to look at ways to improve all aspects of its delivery system.

n June Noble Leon Stocks took his adult daughter as his co-driver on a trip to Greenville. On the next page (10) is her perspective on this trip. The only flaw is her use of

Khedive Transportation Chairman “Free” in describing our treatments.

With the advent of “Third Party Pay,” this is no longer true. By Law we must now collect co-pay and coinsurance for our patients. That is

why today we must use the phrase “regardless of their ability to pay.”

Greenville Hospital Report Jody Dudley

obles and Families, Greetings from Greenville. All is well, We are busy and patient count is up!

We are getting started on construction for our new E-O-S X-ray machine. We have partnered with Philly hospital for a Clinic in Richmond (ACCA) which should be set up very soon. This will be for follow ups and checkups as needed.

Greenville is reaching out and setting up several Clinics. At our last Board meeting, we got to meet Olivia Stamps our national patient ambassador (She is also a Greenville

patient). We at Greenville would like to thank all the Shriners, Lady Shrine, Eastern Star Drivers, Clubs and Units for all they do! You are very special people.

Something coming up in our near

future October 27th Bethel 3 Junior Princess Brooke Baez wants to make it a Shrine Night, inviting all Shriners and Ladies.

Also have some of our patients and families there to speak. Thank you Brooke. It will happen.

LOVE TO THE RESCUE

M

y dad is a Shriner. You know, the guys with the funny little red hats. (Funny red hat = fez, for future reference) He even has a little Camaro go-cart that he rides in parades. In fact, my dad has been the parade loving, fund-raising Shriner since before I was born. I grew up around those guys, had my own personal clowns that visited me at each parade, and sold drinks at the annual Shrine Circus when I was a teenager.

But, what many people don’t realize, is that the Shriners do amazing philanthropy work. Amazing. And I’m not just saying that because my dad has spent 30+ years raising money to help the children. I’m saying that because I have seen it.

I had the honor of accompanying my dad on a recent trip to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Greenville, SC. My dad volunteers as a Road Runner, a guy who transports children to the various Shrine Hospitals around the country. These hospitals treat children with various orthopedic and neuromusculoskeletal disorders and diseases…for free. There are also a few Shriners Hospitals that specialize in treating children with extreme burns.

And it’s all free. That’s right, free. They pay for the children and their families to be transported to the hospitals, pay for their room and board (including the families), and pay for all of their treatment, follow-up, and prosthetics, medicines, labs, etc. Just take a moment and let that soak in.

This fraternal organization spends all of its fund raising efforts to fund these hospitals and provide sick and injured children with state-of-the-art care, without charging their families a penny.

This is mind-blowing to me.

So, back to my story. I went with dad to transport a child to Greenville1 and had the pleasure of touring the hospital.

The Greenville Hospital is an amazing place that is built for the children. Every aspect of the hospital is meant to make the patients comfortable and to take away the “scare factor” associated with a regular hospital. Here, take a look: On the second floor, there are many places to be found. The hospital rooms and family rooms are on one end. The picture below shows the big open area that encompasses play areas, cafeteria area, and OT/PT area. The picture was taken from one of the television areas, looking toward the tables where families can dine. To the left is a small gift shop, as well as a play area for patients and their families. There are pool tables, air hockey tables, a small library, some toys for smaller children, and a racecar simulator. To the far right is the small cafeteria. (There is a huge cafeteria and food court in the adjoining “regular” hospital.) To the near right is the OT/PT area, where patients can receive occupational and physical therapy. I love that they have bright sunlight rather than flourescent lighting when they’re doing their therapy! I got to see a little boy practicing how to walk on his prosthetic using a treadmill. Just another bit of proof that the Shriners hospitals help miracles happen on a daily basis.

The Road Runners have a lounge to use while they wait for their patients to finish with the doctors. In here, the runners sign in and log their trips. There are snacks, drinks, a tv, and comfy recliners where they can rest up before their drives home.

The walls are painted with colorful murals of animals and flowers. You can

see a glimpse of them in the pic of me with the giant turtle (photo top left).

As a Shriner’s kid, I’ve grown up knowing that my dad cared for the children who needed extra care. As an adult, I finally got to see the place that my dad’s lifetime of giving has helped to build. These hospitals, located around the country, are amazing. The care the children receive is phenomenal, and it warms my heart to know that thousands of Shrine Daddies around the world help raise money to fund these hospitals and their programs.

64th Annual Oyster Bowl Chairman Terry Riley

T

he 64th Annual Oyster Bowl Football Game is less than 2 months away!!! The Old Dominion Monarchs will be playing host to the University of Albany Great Danes @ Foreman Field Saturday, September 28th, kick off will be @ 6:00PM. Knowing we have so much to do in September, this event should be one of our biggest highlights, starting off with the Oyster Roast being held September 12th from 4-7 @ the temple (just prior to the business meeting) to support the Oyster Bowl. So come out and enjoy the good food and festivities surrounding this event with all you can eat and drink steamed, fried and raw oysters, bake beans, hush puppies etc.

Nobles, we have 500 tickets to this year’s game for the low price of $28 so get them while their hot, tell your friends and family about them as we need to sell all of them by the 14th of September. See Anne Harriman at the front desk to sign up for tickets today!!!

Nobles, I need your help selling

ad’s this year, as I wrote in last quarter’s High Noble, any Club, Unit or Individual who sells a new ad will receive 10% back in cash. We will be putting additional information in the Units and Cubs boxes this month. All ad material will need to be in by September 1st, so don’t delay; let’s start now to make this the biggest event of the year.

Homecoming Parade is scheduled for 1 week after the Oyster Bowl, October 5th @ 2:00 PM. Let’s come out and parade, have a good time and tailgate once again with your friends and family and cheer Old Dominion on as they take on Liberty University. GO BIG BLUE!!!

Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, the Apprentice School Builders will be hosting the Shriners at their October 26th home football game.

This event has been called the Chili Cook-off Tailgating Day and will be recognizing the Shriner’s as their special guest. They would like to use this game as an opportunity to

revitalize tail-gating activities at their home games in which we would invite our Chili Cook-off participants from the Clubs and Units and others to pull their cars in, set up tents and enjoy tailgating at a Builder event.

We will also advertise this game as an opportunity for other organizations to make donations to the Shriners during half-time. Hopefully, the same organizations will participate in the cook-off as well. Please let me know if your Unit or Club would be interested in participating in this event, more details to come…

elcome all to the Khedive Events Corner which is something I just made up to help plan upcoming events without having to add a bunch of extra planning meetings. First of all on behalf of the Rodeo Chairmen I want to thank everyone who first of all bought or sold tickets but especially those who worked the event we had record crowds both nights. Everyone stepped up to the plate and really got things done. Great Job! Next year with what we learned can only get better.

While there are functions happening all around the Temple the next big Temple function is the Seafood Feast which after moving all around the calendar landed on October 19th. I will be without several of my key people so I will need a lot of help in a lot of different places. I am tentatively planning a strategy meeting on September 10th at 7:00. If you are looking for something to do and are interested in assisting please give me a call or stop by the meeting.

Remember ask not what your Temple can do for you ask what can I do for the Temple.

our Golf Classic Committee is working very hard to make this 24th Annual Golf Classic a very successful outing and raising money to support the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children and Khedive Shrines Transportation Fund.

The Khedive Golf Classic is still asking all to try and help support this year Golf Classic by making cash donation ($10, $15, $20, $30 or etc.) or you might want to make your donation by either being a hole sponsor for $100 or putting in advertisement in the Golf Classic program for as little as $30.00 for 1� card up to full page advertisement for $250.00.

This year you will be able to make your registration payment or donation by means of the use of a credit card through Khedive Shrine Center. All payments for the Golf Classic either by check and credit card need to be noted for the Khedive Golf Classic. To pay your dues, make a donation or buy tickets please go to our Khedive website www.khediveshrine.org and click the Payment Center Link. y how time flies, summer is here and the year is half gone. From all reports the Khedive Annual Rodeo was a successful event which was enjoyed by all who were able to attend.

I hope all the Nobles who attended the Imperial at Indianapolis enjoyed and benefited from the meeting. Fall MASA at Virginia Beach is coming up in September. Hope everyone is gearing up for this event and as well as the fall SASA in Myrtle Beach.

September appears to be a busy month with the Khedive Golf Classic and the Oyster Bowl coming up.

Speaking of the Oyster Bowl Game,

does anyone remember the first Khedive Oyster Bowl Game? Well it was played December 7, 1946 at Foreman Field in Norfolk, Virginia.

Granby High School played Clifton High School from New Jersey. Believe it or not tickets cost $2.00 and official programs cost only 25 cents. It is hard to believe the Temple could make any money at these prices.

Don’t forget the Seafood Fest has been rescheduled for October 19, 2013. In keeping with policies in the past, the Arab Patrol will be expected to volunteer in helping out in serving the food for the Seafood Fest. So please, all members and their ladies who are able are requested to serve.

In lieu of a Patrol Meeting in July, the Patrol held a ladies luncheon at Logan’s Road Side Restaurant with a good turn out. Everyone who attended enjoyed the food and fellowship.

Several of the widows, also, attended.

Due to illness, some of the members and ladies were unable to participate.

Our prayers and get well wishes go out to them.

he Autos Unit has been rolling along with engines humming. The Unit has had a very successful year so far. We sponsored a Simonsdale dance this march and was able to make a large donation to our Transportation Fund.

The Autos provided parking for the Temple Rodeo, followed by a nice turn out for the Temple Spring Ceremonial and if that wasn’t enough we threw in a great Car & Craft Show. he Camaros are off to a great start as the Unit gets ready for the competitions at the MASA convention in September. We are having weekly practice to hone our skills for competition and with 2 new riders it is paying off.

The MAASMC Officers will be discussing the new classes for 2013 during the 11am Thursday meeting at Virginia Beach during MASA. The South Norfolk parade was a fun event and the large crowd appreciated our participation. Several Unit members assisted in the Masonic Child ID Program after the parade.

reetings from the fun house we certainly hope everyone is having a great summer. The Clowns sure are.

First of all I would like to introduce our two newest Clowns Paul Durand and William Mainer. Welcome to the Unit guys we look forward to clowning around with you. A special shout out goes to William who hit the ground running and worked the South Norfolk July 4th parade solo which is no simple task.

The Clowns are always looking for new members. If you are interested drop by one of our regular meetings.

The meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month and they start at 7:00. Food and beverage is always provided.

Our next BIG parade will be the MASA Parade on September 7th.

Please mark your calendar now because this parade is always well attended and Director Ed “Two Dollar” Clifton would love to have a full house hitting the street. That is about it for now.

or a change, we held our July meeting in Hertford, NC, closer to the home of long time member, Noble Jim Carr, to give him a brake in driving such a long distance to attend our meetings. A good time was had by all in attendance. A special thanks goes out to Jim for his efforts in setting this up for us! Good food and good friends it just doesn’t get any better than that!

At our meeting we decided to start taking orders early for this years annual Whitley’s peanut products so if anyone is interested in placing

As with all other Units it is very time consuming and expensive to maintain these cars so please help us out with an order if you can.

Our new weekly sign-up procedures seem to be working fantastically and members are participating in our 5050 every week. Our members member received $200 and gather at a different area golf the other half went to our course every Tuesday morning for the Transportation Fund account, which joy of fellowship, exercise and because will be turned in at the end of the 2013 we truly enjoy the game. ongratulations to all our new Nobles of the Spring Class of 2013.

The Shrine is like a bank, if you do not put anything in the Shrine, you can not get anything out of the Shrine, now is the time to find and join a Unit and become active in the Shrine.

On 6 June the Staff held our third scheduled pot luck dinner in our Unit room. It was well attended and enjoyed by all. The first half of this year has been hard on the Staff, we have had several members who have had medical problems and operations, and we will continue to keep them in our prayers.

Now some notes from the 139th Imperial session, held in Indianapolis the first week in July. The Imperial Potentate Alan “Al“ W. Madsen wanted

to try to break the Guinness World Record for the most clowns in a parade.

The record was set in 1991 at Bognor Regis, United Kingdom, with 850 clowns in a parade, which included 450 clowns from North America. The Shrine did not break the record, they had a little over 650 clowns, but this should be good enough to set the North America record.

A second item was the dispute between the Grand Masonic Lodge of Arkansas, and the states two Shrine Temples. A vote was held to allow Non Masons to petition the two Arkansas Shrine Temples for initiation and membership. After much debate the vote 616 in favor and 137 no votes. It is now permissible for Non Masons to petition the two Arkansas Shrine Temples for membership.

A item of interest to the Staff, is how the Second Sections of the ceremonials will be conducted, this was not discussed at this session. The Imperial Sir did attend the Spring Ceremonial at New Bern, N.C., a hot bed of the traditional Second Section, which he said he enjoyed. Was this a “Hot Sands“ Ceremonial? I hope I am not the only Shriner who enjoys the new color covers of our Hi-Noble.

his being the first article written for the LOH this year I will start by Thanking Ill Bill Kern and his lady Carol for hosting the wonderful breakfast at the St. Patrick’s day parade and to the members of Corinthian Lodge #266 for preparing the meal. This parade is getting bigger and better as each year goes by. However, the LOH is getting smaller in numbers and older in age, so we are looking for a few good men to bail us out.

The qualifications to become a Legion noble are: (1) You can be on active duty or retired. (2) possess a DD-214 and (3) be able to participate in 60% of the meetings. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Khedive Shrine Center.

We do raise money for the transportation fund through paper drives and the BBQ. The Golden Unit Wives Club supports us and also the Transportation Fund. The GUWC donated $2000.00 this year and the LOH donated $1700.00 for a grand total of $3700.00.

The Commanders picnic was held at Frances Riggs farm and it was a great time for all. good food, fellowship and great music by the Khedive Band. A superb job by our Commander Jack Larsen and his lady Debbie.

We look forward to a great rest of the year under the leadership of Commander Laursen and a wonderful next year by or 1st Vice Commander Chester Butler and his lady Michele.

reetings Nobles! This year is flying right along. We’ve been busy participating in events and parades such as the Norfolk NATO Parade, Holland Parade, Pungo Strawberry Festival, Spring Ceremonial, Khedive Rodeo, South Norfolk 4th of July Parade and the Annual Fire Brigade Picnic.

We are out there doing great things and raising awareness in our community. Our Shriners Hospitals are now working with the Wounded Warrior Project as a way to build fellowship with the military community.

In that same vein, I approached the Temple to see if they would publically recognize our fallen heroes and their Gold Star families and was received with overwhelming support. Within days, an Honor and Remember Flag was presented to and flown at the Temple on behalf of the Khedive Fire Brigade. I teamed up with Brenda Ike of H&R to accomplish this. Lady Brenda is the wife of Noble Bob Ike on the Chesapeake City Council and we give her many special thanks!

Honor the fallen and those left behind… always. spectacular this year. What a great time it was. No doubt because everyone heard the world renowned Hillbilly Band would be playing. In all seriousness it was due to a lot of hard work from the Nobility Temple wide.

All is well this quarter with the Hillbillies. We had a great meeting in April. The turnout was standing room only. I’m thinking it was for the delicious chicken and dumplings provided by Noble Lank Malbone P.D. and Lady Barbara.

Illustrious Ray Hall presented Director Bud and the Unit with Illustrious Don McManus’ Past Potentates fez that was donated by his lady Connie. It is beautifully displayed in a glass case on our showcase in the shack. I was one of the Khedive 100 and came into the Shrine during Don’s year as Potentate. I have many fond memories of him.

The NATO parade went very well. many Hillbillies showed up and had a great time as usual. Special thanks to Nobles Liggy and Brian for helping out with the wiring and brand new OOOGAAH horn for Rocky Top. The band played for the L.O.S.N.A. Fish Fry and got some very good reviews.

The annual paper drive was very successful. We ended up taking in around $1500.00 dollars for the Shrine Hospitals. Special thanks to Noble Bill Hamilton, the band and all the Nobles and Ladies for coming out to participate.

I was not able to attend our ladies night this year but from what I’ve heard from several Nobles and Ladies I missed out on a beautiful night with delicious food and very nice atmosphere. Thank you to Director Bud and Lady Barbara for setting up this very nice event.

The Holland parade in Suffolk looked as though it was going to be a rain out but at the last minute the rain let up and Noble Al Kinchen P.D. and

some of the guys that showed up at the shack took Rocky Top and said it was an awesome time.

The Pungo Strawberry Festival Parade was a wonderful time as always.

The crowd was great. The weather was gorgeous and a good time was had by all. Thank you very much to Noble Brother Russell Malbone for letting us

park at the farm. This made getting to and leaving from the Pungo area a breeze.

The annual Memorial Day Parade in Portsmouth went off without a hitch. We got there early enough to go and grab some breakfast. The band played beautifully.

The spring Ceremonial was very nice this year and as per usual the Hillbilly open house was on point.

Thanks to all the ladies that brought all the wonderful dishes and to the band for coming out and playing for the guests and members. I sure got a belly full. As did alot of the new candidates.

Looks like we have a couple of new Hillbillies coming in. The family picnic went very well. A lot of Hillbillies and their families came out. The weather was perfect and the food was great.

The annual Khedive Rodeo was

In June we had a 1948 International pickup donated to the Unit. We are very exited about getting it back together and running it in the parades soon.

The July 4th parade in South Norfolk went great . It was a little warm out as usual for this time of year but the crowd was very energetic and glad to see us coming down the parade route. After the parade was over Joe Thornton P.D. and myself stuck around to see the War Memorial dedication in Lakeside Park. The South Norfolk Ruritan Club and The Disabled American Veterans did a beautiful job on the memorial and the ceremony.

There was a unofficial Hillbilly event on the evening of July 9 2013 at Kempsville Lodge #196. Our Noble Director Bud Marchman and our Noble Past Director Joe Thornton received their 50 year Masonic Veteran’s pins. I think I counted 15 Hillbillies present. It was a very nice presentation. We couldn’t be prouder of these two brethren. We are looking forward to all of the upcoming events and parades this summer.

At our last meeting, the KOM enjoyed a nice dinner and Fellowship at Peking International Buffet in Hampton and it was a well-attended fun night.

Vice Pres. Noble Ray Soltis presided in my absence and did a commendable job. Thank you Ray for stepping in on short notice.

We will be holding our next meeting on August 29th at Khedive Shrine Center with social at 6:30 and dinner 7:30. Meal will be catered in.

reeting Nobles and Ladies. The heat from the summer has tried to slow us down a little bit, but the Mini 18 Wheelers have managed to keep rolling along. We had several members on hand to welcome our newest Nobles during the Spring Ceremonial Open House & Parade.

Our joint golf tournament with the Drum & Bugle Corp. was a great success and probably would have turned out to be better if it were not for the threat of thunderstorms..

We had a great showing during the Khedive Rodeo, where we worked the crowd with fresh hot popcorn & ice cold sodas, and our display of trucks beside the popcorn tent was a big hit with the kids (and adults). We actually sold out of popcorn on Saturday night!

We had five trucks on hand for the South Norfolk 4th of July Parade and we will have also participated in the Cape Charles Parade, by the time this edition hits the news stand.

We are currently gearing up for MASA competition and hopefully we will be able to “woo” the crowd with our precision maneuvers.

As usual, we will be blasting our way through the crowd at the oceanfront, so we are looking forward to a tremendous crowd. Get the word out and invite your friends and family to come down to MASA. Once again, Noble Biggie & Lady Betty will be serving up breakfast sandwiches at Ocean Eddie’s before the parade, so stop on by! Again, Thank You Biggie & Betty for your hospitality!

We still have a few trucks available and are always looking to grow our Unit. So, if you are interested in becoming one of “Khedive’s Finest,” we invite you to drop on by the Truck Stop. We ordinarily meet on the first Monday of each month.

ow have you been to any of the Shrine Club`s meetings lately? If you haven’t then you are really missing some fun. President Ray has been going above and beyond the call of duty in the entertainment and meal planning process this year. Let me recap in May for “Ladies Night” we had Joe Maniscalco and he put on a great show.

In June we had former major league baseball player Hank Foiles as our guess speaker and he really gave us a great talk reminiscing about his days in the game. Then came “Father/ Son/Daughter Night” where we had Jonathan Austin entertain us with his dry humor, magic tricks and juggling (photo 1). What a great show. That night we also awarded Aja McCullough with our annual “Murray L. Buck scholarship”. Great job Aja now go make your parents proud (photo 2).

We have something going on at the Club every months so why don`t you join us? I would like to plant a seed regarding our Christmas party which is being held on December 16th. We have a great meal planned and that event always sells out so mark your calendar now.

On a sidebar I would like to thank everyone who came out and assisted in the Rodeo. It was our biggest one ever and we could not have done it without your help and support. That is about it for now. Remember your Lodge needs Masons and your Temple needs Nobles. Chesapeake Shrine Club third Monday of the month hors de oeuvres are at 6:00 and the dinner is at 7:00. Provost is preparing the marching Unit for the MASA (VA Beach) and SASA (Myrtle Beach) Parades. Plan to attend one or both as a good time is sure to be had by all.

reetings Nobles, hope everyone is surviving this July heat. Since our last communication Motor Corps has participated in three parades, the NATO Parade, the Holland Founders Day Parade and the Pungo Strawberry Festival Parade, all were great fun and a great success. We would like to thank Page and Nini Eaton for opening their home and for their hospitality at the Strawberry Parade, we look forward to this every year. Also The Motor Corps had the honor of presenting Page with a 100,000 Million Dollar award at the June Virginia Beach Shrine Club meeting.

Motor Corps presented this award to Page for all he does and has done for Khedive and for the Motor Corps. We all felt it was well deserved.

The next weekend Motor Corps held its annual Spring Flower Sale and it too, under the direction of our Flower Sale Chairman P.C. Steve Smith, was a huge success. Motor Corps sold over 1,000 flowers for this fund raiser, again breaking all records for sales and profit. Great job everyone.

And lastly on June 24th Motor Corps held a fund raiser at Chipotles Mexican Grill in Greenbrier between 3 and 8 pm. Chipotles gave us a percentage of the sales during that time period, and all we had to do was come out and eat.

Again we would like to thank everyone that came out to have dinner with us and a special thanks to the Scooter Patrol for your large showing of support, it did not go unnoticed.

One of the greatest successes of the year has to be the Khedive Rodeo. Under the direction of MOTOR CORPS MEMBER and Chief Rabban Randy Murphy, both Friday and Saturday nights were a sell out, there wasn’t a seat to be had in the stands and after talking with several people I believe everyone had a great time. Motor Corps was proud to have had a small part in its success. I’m not sure if we should make Randy our Potentate or keep him as our Rodeo Chairman, either way we can’t loose.

This year’s Ceremonial was also a great success. Motor Corps would like to welcome our two new active members, John Skinner and Walter Desenburg to our group. We hope you are as excited about joining as we are and we are looking forward to seeing you on the street.

June 20th Motor Corps held an outing at American Indoor Karting. If you have never done this you must give it a try, what a hoot. We challenged our ladies and several other Units to some friendly competition, there was a lot of trash talking but in the end our ladies were the only ones up for the challenge, and to our surprise they were really good, but we should have known, after all they are Motor Corps ladies. Thanks to all that came out and made this so much fun.

On May 5th The Motor Corps held its annual Shrimp Feast, and to say this years event was a huge success is an understatement. Motor Corps entertained well over 600 paying guests, there wasn’t an empty seat in the house. The two serving lines extended well into the lobby but thanks to the outstanding performance of our cooking crew and servers no one waited more than 6 minutes to be served, all of you went above and beyond. Our Ladies once again did a fantastic job on their basket raffle and dessert sale, they sold all their baskets and desserts thus breaking all previous records for sales and profits. Our Ladies are the best, they always make us proud. And our auctioneer, Kevin Dawkins kept the crowd2nd entertained whileofbringing dollar for all Meets Monday Each top Month our auction items.

We want to thank everyone that came At Fred’s Restaurant out to support us and we hope you enjoyed being there In Beautiful Downtown Franklin as much as we enjoyed having you. We are now going into the second half of 2013, and we are well on our way to the main events coming up in early September. Get your calendars out and mark the dates. The Shriner’s Conventions, the Fall MASA, in Virginia Beach and the Fall SASA, at Myrtle Beach, SC. We have the “HOGS” out practicing over at Lake Taylor High School about once a week, (when weather permitting) so come on over and check us out if you can? We’re looking pretty good. Thank you Dot for keeping our men hydrated.

May 31st, we had our Spring Open House to recruit and welcome new Shrine members. We had good food and some good comradery with the Horse Patrol Unit.

Our new Potentate Mr. Richard Underdown and our recorder Charles Lee P.P. stopped by to socialize a while.

Thank you! for the help and support ACE, Debbie, Linda, Valerie and Dot. We have recruited one new Member, “Success” June 15th, we participated and helped with the Shrine Rodeo. It was a good Temple turnout by the public and our Unit. If you have never been to this event you need to check it out next year with your children and grands. My nephew, Liam, is still talking about the horses.

June 22nd, the Color Guard held it’s annual Beef-ORama. It is some really good food and a lot of fun at this event. Roger Hartman and Linda were hard at work behind the scene. Dot and I had a good time. Come on out and support our Units hard at work, it doesn’t cost a lot to have a great time.

Let’s keep on working to get new members. If you own a Harley (any color) WE WANT YOU!!

n previous editions of the Hi-Noble, I have informed you about the Beach Bum Brothers Unit. You have heard about whom we are and what we do. You have heard that we raise funds to support the Khedive Temple and the Transportation Fund. You have also heard that we like to have fun and spread the word about the great work being done at the Shrine Hospitals.

In this edition, I want to let you know that although we are all happy Shriners, we are also proud to be Master Masons. We hold the values taught in our Blue Lodges close and exercise every opportunity to be seen as Master Masons and Shriners in all we do. Our Unit, although small in numbers, is active throughout Masonry. Our Unit has members that are Past Masters, current Worshipful Master and Senior Warden. We are collectively involved in Scottish Rite Masonry, Royal Arch Masonry, Commandery, National Sojourners, Heroes of ’76, and Knights of St. Andrew. We are active in our community and our churches. The Beach Bum Brothers Unit represents all that is good about Masonry and the Shrine. We are proud to be Master Masons and proud to represent every organization we can in Masonry. Should you have a desire to be a part of the Beach Bum Brothers Unit, we would be happy to speak with you. Summer is here and between the rain and the heat we are staying pretty well drenched. But that’s okay we are still putting our hearts out there for the kids.

As mentioned last issue we had our second annual John Thomas Memorial golf tournament. I am happy to report that it was bigger and better than last years. We raised over $3,000.00 dollars for the kids this year. Kudos goes out to the Tidewater Shrine Club Nobles for their support but special thanks go to Noble Charlie Craig. Charlie, in spite of a torn rotator cuff, worked all year on the tournament. He brought in many new ideas to go along with the door prizes. The major achievement was having a new car donated for anyone getting a hole in one. Nobody won the car but it was exciting to watch all the golfers aiming for that pin on the green. All the players seemed to have a great time and they were already asking about next year’s tournament.

Noble Charlie will be Chairman again and we will be looking for bigger and

better things again. Special thanks goes out to Noble Charlie’s lady and her helpers. We couldn’t have done it without them.

The fourth of July parade was attended by Noble Mitch Dunston in the TSC dump truck. Holding the bed of the truck down were Noble Mark Cook and President Rob Parker. The Beach Bum Brothers were also in attendance which gave us a good representation from Khedive. I have to say that the Shriners really get the crowd going.

We get a lot of cheers along the parade route which shows me we are doing a good job of getting our message out to the public.

We are looking forward to our joint meeting with ACCA at the July meeting in Topping. President Rob has also proclaimed it Blue Lodge night.

This means all Blue Lodge members who are not Shriners eat for free. We would really like to get new members because after all that is the life of our temple and the Shrine.

setting was terrific and the hospitality fantastic. We had close to one hundred Nobles and their families in attendance. The weather was perfect and great fun was had by all. This is another TSC function that really draws us together and shows how much of a family we really are. Thanks to all the workers who made it possible.

emorial Day weekend 2013 is past and one that Khedive Yacht Club, especially Commodore Travis Twiford, is not likely to forget. Heading out on Friday, May 24th in good weather and approximately halfway to Cape Charles in his 43-foot trawler he found himself in an unexpected violent storm. The good news is Travis and Lady Kathy arrived safely at Kings Creek Marina. Due to inclement weather only two of the Club’s other boats made it to Kings Creek.

On Sunday, May 26th other Yacht Club members and their ladies took their land cruisers to Kings Creek for the Memorial Day Ceremony orchestrated by Past Commodore Bill Kennedy. The weather did cooperate, there were problems with the audio portion, but this was not a showstopper. All joined in singing patriotic songs a cappella.

Rear Commodore Clyde Dixon gave a Memorial Day address honoring all veterans with a focus on the men and women of our armed forces that have served and are currently serving in the War on Terror. As a sobering reminder he emphasized that although Osama Bin Laden is dead, the threat of terrorism remains.

The final part of the ceremony was the placing of the wreath in the water. This year Lady Cynthia Bull designed and fabricated a beautiful floral wreath. The wreath was ceremoniously carried to water’s edge then placed in the water by Commodore Twiford. After the ceremony Club members and ladies enjoyed a fellowship luncheon at the Bay Creek golf Club.

The next big event was the Mid-Atlantic Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs (MAASYC) annual rendezvous (11-13 July). This year’s rendezvous was held at Spring Cove Marina, Solomons Island, Maryland. Eight Khedive boats participated now known as the Khedive Solomons Island Fleet. Khedive boaters arrived a day early to help our commodore, who is also the MAASYC fleet captain, prepare for the event.

Commodore Fletcher Johnston of Almas Shrine Yacht Club conducted a memorial service for Yacht Club nobles and ladies who met the black camel over the past year. For Khedive this included past commodores Lou Larcombe Jr., J. Herbert Norton, and Noble Doug Thurner. Although Lou Larcombe Jr. passed away July of 2005 while attending the Imperial session in Baltimore, he was honored at the ceremony at the request of his son Lou Larcombe III. Past Commodore Norton is Dave Norton’s father. Doug Thurner was Don Super’s roommate at the Coast Guard Academy and later his business partner. The ceremony concluded with placing red roses in the water honoring those who passed and is representative of the camaraderie Shriners have for one another.

Khedive Yacht Club took the Burroughs trophy home as the outstanding Yacht Club at the MAASYC rendezvous. Other awards will be announced and presented at the MAASYC change-of-the-watch in September.

All Shriners are fortunate in belonging to an organization bigger than us by supporting our children’s hospitals and burn centers and are provided a platform for developing long-lasting friendships and camaraderie. Participation is the key.

Peninsula Shrine Club

he Peninsula Shrine is very much alive and kicking this year. Under the leadership of Noble President Jerry Whitlock and Noble Vice President Page Neale, the Club has been very busy.

In February, the Peninsula Shrine Club was pleased to receive our Potentate for his Official Visit to the Club.

Members of the Divan as well as many visitors attended and had a great time as our own Noble John Howe was “harassed” as the new Oriental Guide for Khedive. We kicked off our plaque program that same evening and to date have already sold more plaques than in previous years.

On Easter weekend, we held our Annual Paper Drive at A. C.

Moore in Newport News. We had great support from the Nobles of the Club and received good donations. The weather also cooperated and it was a good event. Our 2nd Annual Fishing Trip was held in May and although we did not sell out the boat, we had a great time and were able to raise some money. Our Annual Ladies Night was held in April and was a fun time by all that attended. Special door prizes were presented to our ladies and a great meal was provided. We once again joined forces with Tidewater Shrine Club and sold delicious Vidalia onions this year. We took a risk of obtaining more onions that we had last year but had no problem selling them all. Noble President Jerry has done an excellent job this year making certain that we have had interesting programs at each of our meetings. We have had a program on the 2013 tax changes and how they affect investments, a special program on General Douglas McArthur, and a program on Long-Term Care Insurance. In July, we had an interesting program by Retired Colonel Mike McGurk who spoke about the current issues in the US Military. Noble President Jerry has many other programs planned for the rest of the year which will hopefully keep everyone enlightened.

Nobles, if you are living on the Peninsula and are looking to join a Shrine Club, I highly recommend that you consider joining the Peninsula Shrine Club. We meet the 4th Monday of each month at Artie & Toni’s Steakhouse on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. Our social time begins at 6:00pm, dinner at 6:30pm and our meeting is held at 7:30pm. Drum & Bugle Corps

T

he Drum & Bugle Corps is once again gearing up for our 3rd and 4th quarter push with all the events coming up in 2013. The Drum Corps continues to work with Festevents at one of the locals favorite Friday night events TGIOV. We will be working this event every Friday night through August, so Nobles, come out and enjoy a little Ocean View flavor @ the park there’s plenty of good food, drinks and entertainment. I’d like to take this time to welcome one of our newest members from the Spring Ceremonial and future Hall of Fame

With so much to do, so little time, Cape Charles parade, MASA, SASA, Shrine Golf Tournament, Oyster Bowl, and a new event this year Chili Cook-off Tailgating Day @ the Apprentice School in Newport News October 26th along with Urbanna and a Christmas parade TBD. The Drum Corps will be working hard this fall, Helping Our Children….That’s what it all about.

Williamsburg Shrine Club

t has been a busy quarter for the Williamsburg Shrine Club. In May we had our bi-annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser at the Capitol Pancake House on Capitol Landing Road here in Williamsburg, helping to raise money and awareness for our Hospitals. Attendance was good and all attending had a good time and no one went away hungry.

For the May Club meeting we had Wor. Roxy Gwen, Past Master of Wmsbg No 6, and who is employed

by Dominion Power. He spoke on nuclear power in Japan and talked about the Fukashima disaster. He explained how the incident came about and related it to our own Dominion Power and the safe guards that are in place to prevent such a disaster here. It was an interesting and educational evening.

In June we had a program presented by Wor. Dick Jones on the history and biography of M:.W:.

Robert Scott, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia for the year 1829 and a Past Master of Williamsburg No. 6. His history has been sorely missing and Dick did an extraordinary job of collecting and organizing much information on this fascinating personality.

Also in June the WSC once again had its annual Golf Classic thanks in part to the hard and determined work of Noble Dick Jones. This year it was held at the Kiskiack Golf Club.

The weather was perfect, everyone had a good time and we raised money for our Temple, Hospitals and our Children.

As was well deserved, at our June meeting we gave Noble Dick Jones our Williamsburg Shrine Club’s “Shriner of the Year” Award for 2013. Noble Dick has been working diligently for years to keep the Club moving forward in a positive direction. Congratulations to Dick; well deserved!

HOY MATEY’S. I hope everyone’s year is going well so far. We have been very busy working on our ship and it is progressing nicely. Our maiden voyage will be at the MASA parade in September so be sure to come out and check us out.

We are working very diligently in planning of our 2nd Ever Pig Pickin it promises to be bigger and better than last year. More pulled pork than last year, our world famous cole slaw, baked beans, french fries, hush puppies, live entertainment, your favorite beverages, door prizes, raffles

In July we had a program given by Mr. Mark Summers from the Jamestown Foundation Preservation Society who presented a program called “Discovering the New World” which was about the archeological dig at James Fort at the Jamestown Settlement. There were many questions by Nobles and the presentation was outstanding and most informative.

As always, the Club has interesting, and sometimes even entertaining, programs, and the fellowship is always fun. Come see us.

We meet at the Holiday Inn on Bypass Road, here in Williamsburg, on the first Wednesday of each month. The social hour begins at 6:00PM with dinner at 7:00PM. Directions to the Holiday Inn are easy. When you get to Williamsburg, take the “Camp Perry” exit off of I-64.

Pass through the first traffic light, then turn right at the next traffic light, and then turn right again at the next traffic light. That is Bypass Rd., or US Rt. 60. The hotel is located at the top of the hill, on the right, next to the Hotel 1776.
