Volunteers Wanted!

Samantha Fowler and Logan Carbaugh are the 2012 recipients of the AKDF Bedford scholarship.

Chesley Andrews wins the Andrew K. Dwyer Award

Samantha Fowler is finishing her junior year at Endicott College. Samantha has a dual major in Psychology and Human Services with a minor in Education. Her father is a 30-year member of the Katonah Fire Dept.

The AKD Award is given annually to an individual who by his or her dedication has honored the Foundation’s values while contributing to the spirit of volunteerism.

Logan Carbaugh has been a member of the Katonah-Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corp for two years. Logan will be attending Gettysburg College in the Fall.

The Trustees were thrilled to present the 2011 AKD Award to Chesley Andrews. Chesley was responsible for the innovative redesign of the AKD Foundation website. The new website has been an instant success, increasing participation and communication amongst our supporters.

Nicole Diebold will be receiving the scholarship for her sophomore year at Binghamton University. She is majoring in Actuarial Science. Nicolle is taking a course at Western Connecticut State this summer in order to graduate from Binghamton in three years. For the third straight year, Nicolle Perry will be receiving the AKDF scholarship for her senior year at Williams College. This summer Nicole will be interning at the Legal Aid Society.

Dogg Day ‘11

If interested in helping out please email: cdwyer2250@yahoo.com

All week long it seemed that we might have a repeat of last year’s washout of Dogg Day sports activities, but the weather gods smiled upon us, the skies cleared, and, thanks to the herculean efforts of the Bedford Club staff, we had a magnificent day. The turnout was outstanding with 72 avid golfers participating, and, not to be outdone, a strong and extremely fit contingent of tennis players, all competing for the coveted Dogg Day glassware. Once again, Steve Kroll organized the tennis tournament with his contagious enthusiasm and boundless energy. No one was allowed to rest on the sidelines for very long with Steve in charge. Steve remarked that the men had to bring their very best “A” game this year just to stay on the court with the women who were ‘tournament tough’ and highly skilled! After awarding prizes to all the deserving winners, the group, of well over 200 strong (and now very relaxed!), settled in for dinner while Andy Dwyer recounted the Foundation’s highlights of the last year – of which there were many. Next up on the evening’s schedule was the much-anticipated auction. When Dede Brooks took the microphone from her brother, Andy, the crowd became excited, as they knew they were in for some delightful entertainment and great fun. Donated fine wines, beautiful ski houses, trips to some of the finest golf courses in the world, and much, much more made the evening a tremendous success. To all the generous donors, bidders and buyers, we thank you!

Hotchkiss Varsity Lacrosse Team and EHS Students

As we look back on our 8th Dogg Day and close our book on 2011, we can hardly believe our good fortune in having such a strong group of supporters. As the final receipts are tallied, it appears we will have raised the astounding amount of $200,000.00 from the event. This generosity will allow us to continue supporting the worthy charities featured on our website and perhaps add a few more. What a special day!

At the Dogg Day dinner Chesley’s father read a statement from Chesley. “I am really honored to receive this award, but I am even happier to be able to give back to the Foundation in the best way I can. Andrew was such a special person who we all miss, and I am glad to help a wonderful Foundation and family spread that specialness and love to so many.”

KIPP DC: Chesley Andrews picked KIPP DC for the $1000.00 gift in her honor. KIPP DC is a network of high performing, college-preparatory charter schools in Washington DC. Our gift was used to buy a First Grade Guided Reading Program at the Heights Academy.

John and Ramsay Scott Scholarship John and Ramsay Scott were extraordinary teachers, friends and role models at the St. George’s School. Sadly they lost their battles to a liver transplant and cancer, respectively. They made sure their son, Andrew, would be able to finish his education and receive all the benefits St. George’s has to offer. The AKDF is pleased to support a scholarship for applicants who have lost one or both parents and who could otherwise not afford to attend St. George’s School. Andrew Scott is a great friend to the AKDF and we are excited to support this endeavor to honor his parents.

Thank You Bedford Post Inn and Rebekah Jacobs In October, Rebekah Jacobs, Creative Director and Manager of the Yoga Loft, contacted Elly Dwyer Rice and asked if the AKDF would approve a donation based class at the Bedford Post Yoga Loft. We were deeply touched by Rebekah’s request and always thankful for an opportunity to honor Andrew’s memory. Laurie Luongo taught the class and it was sold out. The class raised $500.00 for the Foundation.

Thank You from the Trustees The Andrew K. Dwyer Foundation would like to thank all of you for a wonderful 2011. Despite difficult economic times the Foundation has continued to grow and expand the reach of those whom we are able to help. Your support has allowed the Foundation to change the lives of so many children and to provide them with opportunities that they may never have been able to have. Entering our 9th year, we look back and are extremely grateful for the dedication and generosity of so many who have contributed to the success of the Foundation and are excited to continue to help improve the lives of those less fortunate. Cindy and Andy Dwyer, Nancy Eaves, Elly Rice, Chris Brooks, Jake Grand, John Hyland and Nate Thorne.

East Harlem School

Project Sunshine

Waterside School

Claudette Ramos was the AKDF scholarship recipient this year at the East Harlem School. Claudette is a talented and extremely intelligent eighth grader. We are proud to share that Claudette was accepted to the Groton School in Massachusetts.

Our first recipient, Tara Pokras, has learned so much and done a superb job for Project Sunshine. She now facilitates events, mobilizes hundreds of volunteers, brings art education enrichments, support and joy to more than a thousand young patients.

East Harlem Lacrosse

Since the intern program at Project Sunshine has been a tremendous success, the AKDF will be supporting 2 intern scholarships this year.

On Tuesday, September 6, 2011, Waterside School celebrated its tenth year of operation with the opening of a new facility at 770 Pacific Street. Governor Daniel Malloy, State Senator L. Scott Franz, Congressman Jim Himes and Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia attended the school’s ribbon cutting ceremony.

AKDF continues to support the lacrosse program at the East Harlem School. Now in its fifth year, the lacrosse program is a core component of the athletics curriculum at EHS. AKDF Committee Member, Chris Einhorn persuaded Inside Lacrosse to donate 50 tickets to EHS to attend the Big City Classic on April 1, 2012 at the Met Life Stadium. The event featured games between top men’s college programs. Chris Einhorn and John Hyland attended the event with the EHS student-athletes for what was an awesome and inspiring day. John Hyland, Chris Einhorn, Coaches Chris Burchfield and John Cooper coordinated a day for the EHS boys’ team to visit Hotchkiss, and watch a lacrosse game on April 14th. Following the game, the Hotchkiss varsity players hosted a clinic with the EHS boys. Lisa, Mary and Emilie McKenna have set up a similar day for the EHS girls’ team, thanks to the efforts of Coach Traggio, to visit Hotchkiss on May 12th. Special thanks to the Hotchkiss School, Coaches, Varsity Lacrosse teams and alums for making the clinics a great annual tradition.

Harlem Academy Congratulations to Harlem Academy’s first graduating class! All thirteen eighth graders have been accepted at excellent schools and the students have been awarded over $300,000.00 in annual scholarships. The AKDF supports two Second Graders at Harlem Academy: Yealie and Nicholas. Their teacher recently updated on us on their progress. “Yealie truly loves school and shows enthusiasm for reading, writing, science and math. She pushes herself to read challenging nonfiction books and quickly learns new algorithms in math. Nicholas enjoys group games, reading aloud and science. He reads above grade level with 100% comprehension.”

Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center One of the most exciting days of the year at Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Department of Pediatrics is the Spring Prom. Patients, family members and staff join together to eat, dance and have fun. The AKDF is proud to support this spectacular and unforgettable event.

“Andrew’s memory has become a light that brings happiness into hundreds of young patients’ lives and that give caring individuals the opportunity to volunteer and make a difference.” Beatrice Kernan, Executive Director of Project Sunshine

Brooklyn Jesuit Prep AKDF continues to support a scholarship at Brooklyn Jesuit Prep. Founded in 2006, its one of the newest Nativity modeled schools. The school is a private and tuition-free school. Our recipient is seventh grader, Ohsafa Harding. Ohsafa has earned First Honors and excellence in his character grade. Ohsafa also has not been absent or tardy any day this year earning him attendance honors as well.

Calvin Hill Day Care Center The AKDF continues to support a scholarship at the Calvin Hill Day Care Center in New Haven, CT. The Center strives to create a rich and stimulating learning environment for children of Yale University families from all economic levels: the Center provides child care at a reduced cost for families which are unable to afford the tuition. Many of Andrew’s Yale friends have donated their time at the Calvin Hill and have had the opportunity to understand that it is a special place.

Add A Stunning Dogg Day Belt To Your Wardrobe!! Zwilling Designs has created a custom Dogg Day belt and the proceeds will go to the Andrew K. Dwyer Foundation. Thank you Tom Collingham for your creativity and generosity. To order: www.zwillingdesigns.com.

The AKDF swimming program is in its seventh year at the Stamford Y. The Waterside students have become excellent swimmers due to our program and many are now swimming on their city teams. Our AKDF scholarship student is Mikayla, a third grader at Waterside School. Mikayla loves math, reading and is an excellent student. She has been a Homework Shining Star each year at Waterside School.

First Tee The First Tee is dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop through golf and character education. The AKDF supports two scholarships from the First Tee of Connecticut. Ronnie Foshay is attending Western New England University in Springfield, MA and majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Ronnie wrote, “I want to thank the Andrew K. Dwyer Foundation, because without the scholarship, it would have been impossible for me to attend WNE.” Hou-Tai Wong is attending University of Connecticut and has not declared a major yet, but is leaning towards finance with a minor in communications. Hou-Tai wrote, “Getting this scholarship means a lot to me. It really drives me forward to study harder and overall do better in college.” Our two new recipients will be announced on June 23, 2012, at the First Tee Breakfast before the Travelers’ Golf Tournament.
