Welcome to the Regent Theatre & Victoria Hall We’re very excited to launch this new season with some incredible shows coming up across both of our venues. It’s been an exciting start to the season! Our annual pantomime launch saw the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk head to Trentham Gardens to kick off the festive period. Head to page 46 to see all the behind-the-scenes antics – including the lovable Daisy the Cow. Are you looking for the perfect Christmas present for your loved ones? Why not give them the gift of live entertainment? From huge musicals The Drifters Girl and Jesus Christ Superstar to hilarious comedians including Tom Davis and Chris McCausland, dancing sensations Diversity and music marvels such as the hit 80s band ABC – there’s something for everyone. If you can’t choose, our gift vouchers are a great option to make someone smile this Christmas. Earlier this year, we were excited to announce our new partnership with North Staffs Mind. As our chosen charity of the year, we have been busy supporting this amazing local organisation in fundraising efforts. So, whether you see their team in our foyers, or our staff taking part in exciting fundraising activities we’d appreciate your support! Visit page 18 to find out more about how you can donate. On behalf of everyone at the Regent Theatre & Victoria Hall, we are incredibly grateful for your ongoing support and appreciation of our beautiful venues. We hope you enjoy reading our latest What’s On guide and we cannot wait to see you very soon!
Cheryl Taylor, Theatre Director
Jack and the Beanstalk
We are delighted to welcome you to our venue, where we want everyone to enjoy the show. With that in mind, we politely ask that you show consideration to your fellow audience members, who have come to enjoy the performances on-stage. We all have a part to play in making sure the theatre is a fantastic experience for all – you can help by ensuring the professionals on-stage are the only people entertaining us with their performances, and being kind to our dedicated staff, who are here to keep everyone safe. Anti-social behaviour towards our staff or other customers will not be tolerated.
Giving a voice to our city’s young people Thanks to our ongoing partnership with the National Theatre, we’re excited to highlight one of our amazing outreach projects – Speak Up. Speak Up is a secondary school programme that gives young people the opportunity to explore issues that matter to them. They work together with local artists to produce creative work in any form that they choose. This programme is all about giving a voice to those young people whose voices are not always heard. Since starting in January 2023, we’ve worked with five local schools and provided workshops alongside some great partners, including BBC Radio Stoke and The Maccas Project. Speak Up Project Manager Phebe Smith says, ‘Speak Up is a brilliant project where we’re seeing young people across the city grow in confidence and feel empowered to use their voice through the arts.’ This ongoing project has received great feedback with one teacher sharing, ‘Speak Up has allowed our students to feel confident and comfortable to explore their feelings around their self-awareness and confidence through the arts. We are very much looking forward to continuing the project and producing some innovative artwork for our community, that really speaks out about who we are and why we are.’ Scan to Book

EDITORIAL
Ahead of Her Time We catch up with the talented Carly Mercedes Dyer for an insight into the groundbreaking career of The Drifters’ manager, Faye Treadwell. What attracted you to The Drifters Girl? I saw it in London because I knew most of the cast. I thought it was such a slick show. I knew the vocals would be amazing, but they blew me away. I thought then that Faye Treadwell would be a great part to play because her story is fascinating. How would you describe Faye and her role in the story? She’s tenacious, groundbreaking, hugely intelligent and resilient. If there wasn’t a Faye Treadwell there wouldn’t really be The Drifters. They’d be some sort of tribute band, but she kept them at the top of their game AND fresh. She was the first African-American manager to take on an industry which didn’t have women managers and she was constantly undermined. That’s crazy when you consider all the things she did. Can you relate to her in any way? One hundred percent. Like Faye, I do things that scare me and push me out of my comfort zone. I never just rest on my laurels. Were you already familiar with the true story that inspired the show? No, I just knew the songs and often I didn’t realise it was The Drifters singing them. Seeing the show really opened my eyes. She created a legacy both for herself and for the group. Do you think she was ahead of her time? Absolutely. As an AfricanAmerican woman in the record business she was groundbreaking and to persevere when people kept shutting her down takes resilience.

Do you have a favourite number in the show? I really enjoy Save the Last Dance For Me because you can tell the boys really enjoy it when they’re dancing. And with the opening medley I think, ‘Wow, what a way to start the show!’ I especially enjoy performing Harlem Child because it is so emotive. The music in this show is amazing and it’s all about nostalgia. People see it and they go ‘I remember hearing this’. What first led you into performing? My friend went to dance classes when we were in nursery school so I wanted to go too. I was painfully shy, so dance and drama were about the social aspect of it and having an emotional outlet. One of my first jobs was High School Musical at Hammersmith Apollo. It was insane because it was more like an arena than a theatre, but it was amazing. What are you most looking forward to about touring the country with The Drifters Girl? I’m looking forward to seeing how each city responds. I know they are going to be blown away by the sheer talent of the company because our Drifters are something else. I just don’t know how they find these people that have the vocal range and the acting ability to put on so many different hats. The cast is incredible and the buzz from the audience is going to be electric. They’re in for a great time. I also hope they come away knowing more about who the backbone behind The Drifters was and how much tenacity went into keeping them going.

Over 50 Years of Faith From a Bible-free brief to world-class musical. Jesus Christ Superstar is back in town. In 1968, on a weekly wage of £20 each, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were on a mission. Their producer, David Land urged them to steer clear of the Bible; he’d had enough of that already. And so, Jesus Christ Superstar was born. Initially conceived as a stage show, it entered the world as a double record. That recording featured some of the best rock musicians of the day including Murray Head as Judas and Ian Gillan of Deep Purple as Jesus. The album was original and exhilarating. And, of course, there was I Don’t Know How to Love Him with its Mendelssohn quotation. When Dmitri Shostakovich, arguably the greatest composer of the twentieth century, came to London in 1975, he asked to see a performance of Jesus Christ Superstar. He was so impressed that he went back the following night.
Photography by Paul Coltas.
It was the subject matter as much as the music that caused the stir. In 1966, John Lennon declared that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus – a more secular approach to religion was part of the mood of the time. The double album played for ninety minutes, and no libretto was needed. There was no impulse behind the composition of a ‘through-sung’ musical beyond it making sense as a record. Unlicensed concert performances sprang up all over America, and in February 1971 Rice and Lloyd Webber, with David Land, went to New York to discuss strategies.
16 | ATGTICKETS.COM/Stoke
The producer, Robert Stigwood, tracked down these unlicensed performances and wiped them out with legal action. The authorised US show with its twentystrong choir beefed up with a 32-piece band played to an audience of 12,000 people in Pittsburgh in July 1971. On 12 October 1971, Superstar made its Broadway debut. When its initial director was replaced, the show shifted its theatrical approach; huge angels swung about on psychedelic wings across shimmering, surreal sets and a full battery of laser beams, smoke and wind machines. Still, it was instantly a landmark in musical theatre history. The evangelist Billy Graham inveighed against it, and the theatre was picketed by the National Secular Society. Lloyd Webber’s first reaction was to return to basics and insist on an austere London production more suited to the simplicity of the work. It cost £120,000 to put on, went into profit after 22 weeks and became the longest-running musical in West End history, overtaking Lionel Bart’s Oliver! Today, Superstar continues to thrive, with numerous revivals showcasing its vibrant and powerful score, like the 1996 revival and a 2014 al fresco production in Regent’s Park, adding new dimensions to an enduring masterpiece. Written by Michael Coveney.

Backstage Pass Here’s your exclusive backstage pass to all the goings-on behind the scenes at the Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall. The cast of Jack and the Beanstalk had a lot of fe-fi-fo-fun when they headed to Trentham Gardens for the launch of the 2023 festive season. Jonathan Wilkes, who will be taking on the title role of Jack Trot, and Kai Owen, donning his yellow wellies as Farmer Trot – woke up the residents of North Staffordshire and South Cheshire as they took over both the BBC Radio Stoke and Signal 1 breakfast shows.
