2024 is already shaping up to be one of our most exciting years yet, and we’re looking forward to welcoming a huge variety of productions to our theatre.
In February, we launched the brand new Steps musical, Here & Now, and we loved hosting the band at our venue. Customers queued from 3am to be the first in line to meet the pop sensations in our Box Office! The show comes to us for its world premiere this November and it is not one to miss.
After the success of our free Open Day last year, we’ll be opening our doors to the public again this May. Guests will be able to access our stage as well as enjoying family craft workshops and freshly made candyfloss!
Our Stage Experience production for 9-24 year olds is back this August – the hills will be alive for this year’s talented performers and technical participants when they take on The Sound of Music.
I’m thrilled that as a venue we were recently shortlisted for a Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Award and won the award for Team of the Year at the Midlands Service Excellence Awards – a real testament to the efforts of our fantastic team.
As ever, we’d like to thank you for your continued support, and we hope to see you at The Alex very soon.

The timeless music of Steps unfolds as a backbeat to an incredible story in this long-awaited musical.
With 22 million record sales and 500 million streams under their belts, Steps are the UK’s most successful mixed-gender band ever. Since coming to fame in 1997 with 5, 6, 7, 8, Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Lee Latchford-Evans and Lisa Scott-Lee have notched up 14 top five singles and four no.1 albums, and have sold-out arenas across 11 tours. So why has it taken so long for a Steps musical to reach the stage?
It turns out they’ve been waiting for the dovetailing of the perfect story with the right creative team. Lisa says ‘We’ve been talking and dreaming about this for around ten years. It’s taken time to find all the right components.’
HERE & NOW, which draws its title from their 2001 single of the same name, isn’t the Steps story. It’s an all-new narrative, with Claire saying: ‘This is a completely standalone story and the characters aren’t based on us. We wanted it to be its own tale and let the music do the talking.’
Among the band’s numerous hits are the number one’s Tragedy/Heartbeat and Stomp along with One for Sorrow, Better Best Forgotten, Last Thing on My Mind, Chain Reaction and so many more. With such an embarrassment of riches, how have they decided which ones to include in the show?
H grins proudly. ‘That’s the problem but it’s a nice problem to have. It’s the same as when we go on tour. It’s really difficult knowing which songs to perform and which songs to leave out. With this musical the only difference is thinking about the lyrical content of how they fit within a narrative.’
Faye adds, ‘With this show, we were very conscious of making sure that the story and the characters were exactly right and that the people who are our fans, as well as everybody else, would be able to relate to it.’
The fivesome are known for their spectacular live shows and they promise HERE & NOW will also be a treat for the eyes and ears. ‘Everybody needs escapism in their life at some point and that’s what we’re bringing with this musical,’ Lee says. ‘We’ve always said no matter what’s going on in your life you can come to one of our shows, put it all aside for two hours and have a great time. If we manage that with the musical too then we’ve done our job.’
Faye adds, ‘We are so excited to be opening HERE & NOW in Birmingham later this year. We have such fond memories of playing here over the years, and we can’t wait for everyone to see the incredible show we have had a part in creating. You are going to love it!’
The world premiere of HERE & NOW, the hilarious and heartwarming new musical based on the songs of pop phenomenon Steps, comes to the Alexandra Theatre!
Welcome to seaside superstore Better Best Bargains, where it’s Friday night, the vibe is right and everyone’s dancing in the aisles. With Caz and her friends around, who knows what love has in store…
Directed by the award-winning Rachel Kavanaugh (The Great British Bake Off Musical) and written by Shaun Kitchener (Hollyoaks), HERE & NOW is produced by Steps themselves, ROYO and music legend Pete Waterman, and features many of Steps’ iconic hits, including Stomp, 5, 6, 7, 8 and Last Thing On My Mind
