Welcome to our latest What’s On Guide bursting with incredible shows! Hello and welcome back to a wonderful new season of music, laughter, drama and family entertainment at the Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall. We’re all incredibly excited about Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story which will be rockin’ the Regent Theatre stage on its 30th Anniversary tour. If you love a glitzy classic you’ll be blown away by the magic of Cabaret, and for something more ‘in the moment’, the heart-warming musical Once will make you cling a little tighter to your loved ones during the winter months. We’ve an exclusive cast interview inside, so don’t miss out. Over at the Victoria Hall we’re happy to welcome comedians Jimmy Carr and Milton Jones who’ll be splitting sides with their unique take on life. The intrepid Ben Fogle, will also be visiting us on his travels so don’t miss your chance to hear first-hand about his fascinating adventures. There’s so much going on I can’t squeeze it all into this bit, so why not browse your brochure and pick your favourites? See you soon!

Frazer Hoyle, Theatre Director

What do you love most about working at the theatre? The atmosphere! There is a certain buzz in the air when we have a sold out show at the Regentnothing else quite compares! It is also nice to work with such a good bunch of people.

Hello From... Ryan Brereton Deputy Customer Experience Manager

FROM DECEMBER 2019

Which show from the guide are you most looking forward to? I am most looking forward to Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story at the Regent Theatre in February. I love all of the music of that era and I would love to learn more about the legendary whirlwind of his short-lived life. Which movie would you like to see on stage? I would love

to see a theatre production of ‘Stand By Me’. It has been one of my favourite films since I was a child and I think it would translate really well into a theatre production! The soundtrack is fantastic too! What is your first theatre memory? When I was 11 years old, a group of us went to London to celebrate a friend’s birthday. With his parents being from London, they were really interested in taking us to the West End. We found ourselves watching The Woman In Black. It was quite scary for an 11 year old – I can still remember the rocking chair scene! I have also been lucky enough to catch it twice at the Regent since!

9 TO 5? More like 5, 6, 7, 8! With 9 to 5 The Musical movin’ and shakin’ its way into theatres, we decided to give our TheatreCard Members the chance to dance like Dolly at our latest exclusive event at The Palace Theatre, Manchester. The evening started with a toe-tappin’, hip-bumpin’ workshop led by the musical’s own dance captain, Sierra Brewerton. Members spent 45 minutes learning a dance from the show, with expert instruction and plenty of exciting choreography! Members who felt more comfortable in a cosy theatre seat than up on their feet were also able to enjoy the class. A mum who decided to spectate said: ‘I’m watching my daughter up on stage, she’s doing really well. It looks really good fun. As a parent, I’m really proud!’ After all that two-steppin’, complimentary refreshments were provided in the bar... in the form of a signature ‘Cup of Ambition’ cocktail of course! Members were able to kick back, relax and socialise before sitting down to enjoy the evening performance. Everyone had a fantastic time, both at the dance class and the musical itself. They loved being able to perform a routine from the actual show, which they watched back later – this time performed by the cast as part of the storyline. One Member sent us a lovely note afterwards, saying:

‘We very much appreciated all your help throughout the event; my daughter Taylor was in her element. We’d like to extend our best wishes to Sierra, who was brilliant throughout. Please also send a message to the cast of the show, who were tremendous. It was a great show – everyone was amazing – and we’ll be telling everyone to go and watch it!’ Not a Member yet? Simply sign up for TheatreCard Classic or TheatreCard Plus – you’ll enjoy a huge range of benefits, including ticket offers, fee-free booking, priority seats, access to exclusive content... and invitations to backstage experiences like this at your local theatre.

‘Thank you so much for the enjoyable pre-show entertainment. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. We were so looked after by all the staff involved in the workshop.’

EDITORIAL

A Perfect Match We catch up with Daniel Healy who plays ‘Guy’ and Emma Lucia who stars as ‘Girl’ in the 2020 UK tour of Once. Daniel, do you remember the first time you played the role of Guy? I got to play ‘Guy’ in the West End, so that was a special night. My parents came and all the friends who could be there. I remember giving it absolutely everything as I thought it would be my last time playing the role. How wrong I was! I’m just so blessed to be able to tell such a beautiful story. Why do you think Once resonates with audiences? D: Glen Hansard’s music is timeless, Enda Walsh’s script is perfect and the story is conveyed by a stellar cast. We have all had that once-in-a-lifetime moment when we’ve met someone who turned on the light in our eyes and reminded us of our true selves. Did we fall in love and sail into the sunset? Did we let it fall away due to outside circumstances or timing? Was it only for that moment? You’ll have some questions for yourself after you see the show. I think that’s why people love it. What do you think, Emma? It’s a story of love and friendship that isn’t romanticised. Often in theatre, decisions are tailored to ensure that the piece ends ‘happily ever after’ which isn’t always how life is. Once is truthful and bare, with the most heart-wrenching music you’ll ever hear. Tell us a bit about Girl. What’s she like? E: ‘Girl’ is a beautiful example of someone who’s experienced a huge amount of pain, but refuses to let it taint her outlook on life. She quite literally laughs in the face of cynicism and is constantly trying to uplift and inspire others. Daniel, you’ve co-written songs with Ronan Keating, who you met through Once. How was that? Ronan is someone I consider a great friend. We met on Once and I’ve played in his

FROM DECEMBER 2019

touring band for the last four years. I wrote six songs on his last album ‘Time of My Life’. It was an amazing experience that’s opened up a lot of doors for me. I signed a publishing deal with Concord Publishing and have since worked with artists and production houses all over the world. Emma, you play the piano on stage – is that an added challenge? One of the unique aspects of Once is that the music is played live by the actors. I’ve been playing the piano since I was seven years old and it’s always been a kind of outlet for me – so to combine the two is really special. There are so many different instruments in the show, especially for the swings who cover several parts, so the challenge comes with playing everything live. Daniel, are you excited to head out on tour? I’ve toured with the band but I’ve never toured with a theatre show before, I can’t wait! Emma, what’s your favourite part of the show to perform? I love ‘Falling Slowly’ because it’s the moment Guy and Girl connect with each other. I also love when the whole company perform ‘When Your Mind’s Made Up’ for the first time. Both scenes give me goosebumps every time! Why should people come and see it? E: Once really is the most relatable musical I have ever come across. When I did the show last year, so many of my friends and family came to watch – from my 80-year-old granny who loves crosswords and classical music to my 17-year-old brother who generally dislikes theatre and only listens to heavy metal... Everyone loved it. Once isn’t just a big emotional love story. It’s also hilarious. For a night out at the theatre it has everything you could ever ask for. Great music, laughter and a beautiful story that everyone can relate to.

WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE REGENT THEATRE Join us in the summer for a fortnight as an apprentice actor or technician. Learn about life in the theatre whilst working on a real production which will be performed to schools in week two. WHO IS IT FOR?

Shortlisted for the UK Theatre Awards 2019 for Excellence in Arts Education, this programme is open to young people in years 10 – 13 only (age 14 and above). We want to provide a great experience and therefore need applications from young people who can demonstrate a genuine passion for the creative industries. It’s an exciting opportunity to see the inner workings of a large scale venue and gain valuable work experience to take forward in life.

WHEN IS IT?

This is a two week placement. Students need to be available for both weeks. MON 29 JUN – FRI 10 JUL 2020 | For school years 10 – 13

WHAT WILL IT INVOLVE?

As part of the programme students will spend the first week working as an actor or a technician as well as finding out about a variety of departments including Creative Learning, Front of House, Box Office and Marketing. In week two, they will take the skills they have acquired out into the community and, after a VIP performance at the Regent Theatre, they will take a performance ‘on tour’ to local primary schools. Students choose to specialise in either Acting or Stage Management & Design. Acting Placement: Students will work with a professional director to produce a short play that will be toured out into the community in week two.

APPLY BY

3 FEB 2020

They do not need acting experience but there will be a short workshop/audition with other applicants to determine who is most suitable. Students need to be energetic, enthusiastic, able to take direction and able to work in a team. Stage Management & Design Placement: Students will work with the technical department and learn how to design, rig and operate simple lighting and sound systems. They will also learn basic stage management skills. No experience is necessary but applicants need to be a strong team player and have an interest in working as a technician in the future.

‘It’s an amazing experience for anyone who wants to do tech or become on actor’ – Student, aged 15

HOW DO YOU APPLY?

Contact stokecreativelearning@ theambassadors.com for an application form. Applications close 3 February 2020. Interviews and auditions take place w/c 10 February 2020. We anticipate a high number of applications so not all applications will be successful. This is the only work experience we currently offer. If you are unable to do these dates then please look elsewhere as we will not be able to offer you alternative dates.
