Welcome to Richmond Theatre

I’m so excited to have you ‘spring’ into our latest season and what better way to welcome the warmer weather than a picnic on the Green and a show at Richmond Theatre!

2024 marks a momentous year for Richmond Theatre as we celebrate 125 years! We first opened as a theatre in 1899 having been designed by renowned architect Frank Matcham. Matcham designed a variety of iconic theatres across the UK, including The London Palladium, Hackney Empire and Bristol Hippodrome. At 125 years, Richmond is one of the oldest surviving examples of his work.

As you can see from our front cover, we have a rich history of amazing stars treading our boards, and we’ll be sharing more about our history in a dedicated History Page in our What’s On guide this year. Read this one about our custodians over the years on page 9.

Don’t forget you can make your visit extra special by upgrading to the Ambassador Lounge and adding some impressive packages too! Or why not treat yourself by having your drinks and snacks brought directly to you with our Delivered At Seat service?

We not only have brilliant shows on our stage, we are also bringing budding theatre artists backstage with our Creative Learning offerings. See more information on all the ways they can get involved, including masterclasses and workshops on pages 30 and 31.

The entire Richmond Theatre team can’t wait to see you again soon.

Celebrating 125 years of Richmond Theatre

Over Richmond Theatre’s 125 year history it has had various custodians and managers, whose contributions have ensured the longevity of the building.

The first owner was F. C. Mouflet, who commissioned the building in 1898 and was also the manager of the Castle Rooms on Whittaker Avenue. He opened the theatre in 1899 with C. E. Hardy as Manager. In 1902 the Theatre was purchased by journalist, playwright and producer George Dance. Dance oversaw the first major change to theatre, reseating the auditorium to increase capacity to over 1300 and the provision of more fire exits to secure a license as a variety house.

In 1913, the theatre was briefly leased to N. Carter Slaughter, aka Tod Slaughter, who was best known for putting on blood-curdling melodramas before passing over to Joseph ‘JT’ Mears in 1917. A prominent local businessman and later Mayor of Richmond, Mears owned and operated the theatre until 1935 when the lease was passed to the Arthur Rees and his Repertory Company.

In 1937 the theatre was acquired by Circle Theatres Ltd. who, under the management of A. B. Brandreth, introduced pre-West End runs, something we regularly continue today. Circle Theatres were followed by Leon Underwood in 1940 before being purchased by F. J. Butterworth (FJB Theatres) in 1944. The Butterworth family still own the building today.

By 1947, Alan Miles, Frederick Piffard and Andrew Melville took the helm. Piffard remained manager until 1973, becoming one of the longest serving theatre managers in the theatre’s history. This is commemorated by a plaque in our foyer.

From 1973 to 1986, Louis Michaels Ltd., who operated several theatres including Theatre Royal and Playhouse Bournemouth, took over and oversaw the first redesign of the gallery (upper circle), updating it from the original stone-padded steps. In 1986, the torch was passed to Kenneth H. Fox who became Chairman of Richmond Theatre, with Sally Greene OBE as Managing Director. Greene remained with the theatre through the major refurbishment from 1989, seeing the theatre reopen in 1991. It was during this time that the Richmond Theatre Trust was established.

2000 saw Richmond Theatre become part of the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), who continue to operate it today. At nearly 25 years, this makes them the second longest caretakers of the building.

Who wants to be a millionaire?

Gaynor Faye directs and joins an all-star cast in Kay Mellor’s stage adaptation of TV classic.

Hit TV show The Syndicate is making a leap from screen to stage. Created by the late writer Kay Mellor, the show captured the imaginations of millions when it made its ITV debut in 2012. Its stage adaptation was Kay’s final foray into theatre before her death in 2022 and her storytelling legacy continues in the hands of her daughter, Gaynor Faye, who was initially set to co-direct with her mother.

Gaynor, no stranger to her mother’s creative vision, says, ‘Mum’s shoes are big ones to fill, but I understand what she wanted for this production because I’ve been by her side from the beginning. I’m excited for everyone to see it.’ The Syndicate tells the tale of five supermarket employees whose lottery syndicate wins the jackpot just as their jobs and livelihoods teeter on the edge of uncertainty. Will the windfall fulfil their dreams or plunge them into despair?

Kay Mellor’s knack for translating TV hits to the stage is evident in her previous successes like Fat Friends – The Musical and Band of Gold, both collaborations with theatre producer Josh Andrews. The allure of working on a Kay Mellor production proved irresistible for actors Samantha Giles, Brooke Vincent, and Gaynor’s son, Oliver Anthony who makes his stage acting debut in the role of Jamie, adding a third generation of the Mellor family to the production.

Brooke, known for her role as Sophie Webster in Coronation Street, is returning to acting for the first time after becoming a mother. She is a fan of the show’s warm northern humour and Kay’s authentic storytelling. Samantha Giles, who played Bernice Blackstock in Emmerdale for 26 years, commends Kay’s ability to craft relatable stories and characters, emphasising the stark contrast between her glamorous soap persona and the ‘frumpish’ Denise in The Syndicate.

While Samantha and Brooke bring years of soap experience to the stage, Oliver’s TV acting credits include the award-winning My Left Nut, Fat Friends and series four of the BBC’s Syndicate.

Oliver said, ‘Having worked with my grandmother, playing the role of Jamie, in development workshops, I’m chuffed to bits to be making my stage acting debut alongside my mum in my grandmother’s final play’.

While full of laughter and drama, The Syndicate’s universal appeal lies in its exploration of the age-old fantasy of winning the lottery and invites the audience to contemplate their reaction to a life-altering windfall, reminding us to be cautious about the dreams we chase and decisions we make. However, audiences will no doubt be in awe at the power of Kay Mellor’s storytelling.

‘We all have one thing we are ashamed of…’

A deliciously thrilling play about scandals, exposés and the value of personal reputation.

When Welsh playwright Emlyn Williams conceived Accolade in the 1950s, he selected a theme that still resonates in today’s social media-obsessed world –the fragility of personal reputation.

Williams’ protagonist is Will Trenting, a novelist famous for his scandalous novels. As Trenting is honoured with a knighthood, and acceptance amongst the establishment, his own double life lies in wait of exposure.

As glasses are raised and eyebrows arched, the spotlight focuses on the award-winner himself – on the eve of his knighthood, Will’s own ‘Accolade’ becomes a double-edged sword as a schoolgirl’s father (himself an unsuccessful novelist) accuses Trenting of a shocking crime and threatens him with blackmail. The play explores the intricate web of secrets that surround Will’s private life – his hidden relationships and unconventional choices.

Whilst set in post-war Britain, it seems little has changed – instead of tabloid revelations, today’s generation will recognise how easily peoples’ lives can be exposed in minutes on social media platforms and ‘shaming’ sites. Accolade unravels the consequences of societal judgment and the media’s insatiable appetite for sensationalism, making it a timeless commentary on how intrusion can threaten private lives – a theme that will resonate profoundly with today’s relentless celebrity culture.

As the characters in the show grapple with the consequences of their choices and face public scrutiny, the narrative challenges audiences to reflect on the morality of passing judgment on others, prompting a reconsideration of society’s role in the private lives of its members. While Accolade highlights the enduring fascination with the personal affairs of those in the public eye, it prompts big questions on the impact any of us may face, living in a world dominated by misinformation, manipulation, and the authenticity of public perception.

At the time it was written the play was shocking for its sharpness as it exposes the hypocrisy of the fifties and the fragility of reputations. Now in its eighth decade, Accolade is a testament to the timeless nature of its themes, offering a mirror up to society and challenging us to re-evaluate our relationship with the truth. In an age where the spotlight never dims, it seems we are still delighted to condemn.
