W H AT ’ S O N | F R O M A P R I L 2 019 THE MUSIC AND THE DRAMA OF THE BODYGUARD LIVE ON STAGE IN EDINBURGH.

Welcome to the latest Edinburgh Playhouse What’s On Guide! It was 90 years ago that Edinburgh opened its doors to its first super cinema, the Playhouse. Since then, the Playhouse has enjoyed highs and lows, from presenting an ever changing programme to being planned for demolition in the 1970s. Can you imagine Edinburgh without the Playhouse? We have hosted some of the world’s biggest and most successful musicals, including Phantom of the Opera, MAMMA MIA!, Miss Saigon and Billy Elliot. Many legendary bands and artists have also graced our world famous stage including Bob Dylan, Elton John, Tom Waits, BB King, The Proclaimers, Billy Connolly, Kevin Bridges and Chris Rock. And what a year 2019 will be as we continue to bring you world-class acts from around the globe. We hope you agree that there is much to look forward to. It brings me great pleasure to share with you some of our favourite pictures, facts and figures from the last 90 years. Please share your own memories and photographs with us on our social pages using the #playhouse90. We would love to hear from you.

Colin Marr, Theatre Director

INTERESTING FACTS AND KEY DATES • Approximately 1,250,000 bricks were used in the building of the Playhouse.

• In 1975 The Edinburgh Playhouse Society was formed and raised funds to reopen the venue.

• The Playhouse opened on 12th August 1929 – exactly 375 years after the first recorded play was performed on the Greenside Place site.

• The theatre was refurbished and reopened on 1st June 1980 with a charity gala.

• In 1932 Laurel and Hardy made a personal appearance at the Playhouse, meeting the General Manager Walter McGuire and taking in the views from the venue rooftop. • The venue closed down on the 24th November 1973 and the last film to be shown was ‘Live and Let Die’. • In the same year The Playhouse Preservation Group was formed and the Secretary of State intervened to prevent demolition of the Playhouse, granting the building a B listing.

• In 1985 on the 3rd July a royal gala was held to raise funds for the 1986 Commonwealth Games. The Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Anne were all in attendance. The BBC recorded the show and broadcast it across the nation. This in fact was the largest indoor ‘outside’ broadcast that the BBC had attempted at that time. • Sport made a return to the Playhouse in 1986 and this time it wasn’t on the screen, but live on stage when the Commonwealth Games used the venue for weightlifting and wrestling.

Projection Box to Director’s Box The venue closed in 1993 with a sold-out performance from Queen legend Brian May, and reopened later that year after a multi-million pound refurbishment. This included the transformation from the old projection box to a new viewing experience, The Director’s Box. Unique to any British theatre it quickly became a sought-after ticket and today you can still enjoy your very own VIP experience or exclusive hire.
