Things I’m personally looking forward to are the openings of NEXT TO NORMAL and KATHY AND STELLA SOLVE A MURDER. We have an exclusive rate on Kathy and Stella, so I’d suggest you reserve your groups now as I’m sure this one is going to be popular. MRS. Make sure you enter our competition to be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to see this fantastic show.
WICKED last month became the longestrunning musical in the West End. The show is a firm favorite amongst staff and our clients. Check out 10 facts about the show on page 23.
Highlights in this edition include interviews with Rhea Norwood and Layton Williams who have joined the cast of CABARET on page 9 and Gabriel Vick who originated the role of Mrs. Doubtfire on page 36. We also have staff reviews of TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL on page 35 and HADESTOWN on page 43.
Finally, I would also like to welcome Ross Finbow to the team. He has been with us for almost 6 months and has been a very welcome addition.

Star interview!
We recently interviewed Layton Williams and Rhea Norwood, who have just joined the cast as Emcee and Sally Bowles. Read on to see what they have to say…
Congratulations on joining the cast of CABARET, how does it feel to be part of such an iconic production?
Layton: Thank you. Honestly it’s a dream. I’ve been a huge fan of this specific production and seen it multiple times so the fact that I’m stepping into the show next is kinda wild.
Rhea: It’s an absolute dream come true for me. Sally has been a dream role of mine since I was a teenager and to be part of this production in the West End with Rebecca Frecknall’s incredible conception of it, and with it’s legacy of incredible actors in these roles - I feel so so lucky! I’ve been singing these songs since I was 16 and have always felt such a strong connection to them and the meaning I’ve attached to them. It’s very surreal to be singing them and it not be in my bedroom or in the shower, let alone on stage with an incredible team around me and a paying audience!
What drew you to the role?
L: If I’m being honest I didn’t ever have the Emcee on my wish list until I saw the show and was like “Oh, I’d love to do that”. I didn’t think someone like me would be able to portray such a character so I’m unbelievably grateful to the team for giving me the chance to shine.
R: I watched the film in sixth form college and immediately felt represented in Sally. I felt like she spoke to the parts of myself I didn’t like and also the parts of myself I did. I’m really interested in characters that feel undefinablethat can’t quite be categorised into ‘good’ and ‘bad’ because, to me, that’s the most authentic portrayal of what it is to be human. I’m not interested in playing ‘likeable’ characters, and Sally exists in this morally grey area. She’s incredibly multi-faceted and paradoxical. She’s sexy and ugly, selfish and caring, funny and heartbreaking, guarded and vulnerable. Her journey in the play speaks to the audience on both a domestic and existential level. Sally is a women who pursues self-expression in an increasingly constrained and conformist era but
she also is desperate to be loved and seen - that feels both heroic and devastatingly human to me. She’s a performer by profession but also by nature. And that’s incredibly fun to play. To be able to sing, dance and play with such varied emotions in one role is an absolute gift. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted to in a role.
Can you tell us a bit about your character and how you relate to/prepare for portraying them?
L: I’m playing the Emcee who is such a bonkers character. He’s a shape shifter, an entertainer, a host that does the most. We’re a week before officially opening so currently I’m trying to be kind to myself, continue growing and remembering what number is next when running off the stage!
R: Once I was cast I took myself on a solo weekend trip to Berlin before we started rehearsals. Sally’s incredibly independent so I felt it was important for me to explore Berlin on my own. In CABARET, Berlin is almost a character in itself - I’d never been to Berlin so I felt it was important to go as so much of the history of the place is embedded in it’s current geography. I walked around the city, sat in Jazz bars at night and watched Jazz singers perform- which felt incredibly useful to observe. I bought some old pictures and postcards from various little market stalls and used them to create a scrapbook. I like to write in character so I created a backstory for Sally as a diary entry. These are just useful tools to drop back into during the run to keep the essence and spirit of Sally alive. But ultimately, the script is so well written- it’s pure genius, and as a result so much of how I discovered Sally was through mining the text from clues and details. The script was a map for how to play out the journey. Our wonderful resident director Tom Hughes speaks lots about ‘playing the game’. Sally always wants something, so figuring out the yo-yo of her needs from moment to moment was a large part of the prep. Oh, and the vocal training for all the beautiful songs!! This is my first musical so I spent lots of time building up my singing technique with vocal coaches.
What is your favourite song in the show?
L: Honestly I don’t know yet until I get a few shows under my belt but I am feeling Money Once I get that costume on with the nails omg it’s gonna go off.
R: That’s like asking whose you’re favourite child! I honestly love them all, but I think if I had to choose I’d say CABARET is probably my favourite. It’s emotionally and vocally very satisfying to sing, and I sing it at the climax of the show. So much of the show is Sally hiding her emotions and vulnerabilities behind a carefully curated facade but CABARET is a moment of pure unhinged released. It’s her manifesto for living. That feels powerful. And it’s just a little bit iconic isn’t it!?
CABARET has a rich stage history. Have you drawn any inspiration from any previous performances or interpretations of the show?
L: Oh absolutely. I’ve fallen down many CABARET rabbit holes watching clips of as many previous Emcees as possible. Then I hope
to find my way and sprinkle some magic into the role myself.
R: Yes and no. My Sally has existed within me for such a long time, and I feel passionate about sharing my personal version of her so I’m really not interested in playing into any other previous interpretations of the role. I think playing Sally is like playing a Shakespeare character- there’s no point in doing what’s been done. I can only play the truth of my Sally. The script is so well written it allows for such varied interpretations of each moment and character- that’s incredibly freeing- there’s no ‘right’ way to play Sally. That being said, the show does have such a wonderful legacy. Some of my absolute acting heroes have played the role. I’ve seen clips of Judi Dench, Emma Stone, and obviously watched the film and saw this production a couple of years ago too. So that’s bound to have influenced my interpretation.
What do you hope audiences take away from your performance and the show as whole?
L: I hope it makes audiences think deeply about how we treat each other as a human race. This show is set during such a horrific time. It’s almost like we haven’t learnt our lesson you know? I quote “Why can’t the world just live and let live”.
R: Well I hope they have a great time firstly! Yes, there’s a very serious and heartbreaking through line of CABARET but it’s also a really fun spectacle of a show. The music, choreography, costumes, production design are all high concept and incredibly striking, and there’s a really fun immersive element too. I think audiences will experience a full range of emotions. I can’t control how audiences will react to my performance so I let them take whatever they want from it. I know my version and how I experience the show as Sally and that’s all I really have control over. I want them to take whatever facet of her they might connect to and feel seen in that.

Staff review
Groups account handler Neil McMinnies saw TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL
TINA – THE TINA TURNER
MUSICAL celebrated it’s fifth year at the Aldwych Theatre recently and it’s no surprise that this show is now a firm fixture in the West End. The musical celebrates the remarkable life of this incredible singer and amazing entertainer in a brilliant and dazzling manner.
Karis Anderson is outstanding in the lead role as she takes on the mammoth task of singing Turner’s songs from her early years as Anna Mae Bullock, through meeting Ike Turner and belting out all time classic tracks such as Nutbush City Limits, Proud Mary and River Deep, Mountain High.
The show is a tough watch in parts as it focuses on her marriage with Ike and the brutality he showed towards her (with scenes are brilliantly acted by Okezie Morro) but sad to witness the pain caused to Tina.
As with all the great icons though, Tina bounced back from those troubling times and in the second act it is a joy to watch her rise from a forgotten figure in the late 70’s to one of the world’s biggest stars by the mid 80’s. All the great tracks are covered, with We Don’t Need Another Hero a particular high point. Private Dancer, What’s Love Got To do With It and of course, Simply The Best are all absolute crowd pleasers that had the audience in raptures.
When BACK TO THE FUTURE THE MUSICAL hits 88mph, your groups are gonna see some serious entertainment! So what are you waiting for? Book your tickets yesterday!

Star interview: Gabriel Vick
We recently interviewed Gabriel Vick who originated the role of MRS. DOUBTFIRE. Read on to see what he had to say…
The show recently celebrated 1 year in the West End. How does it feel to have been in the show from the beginning?
It’s a real honour to know that people want to see our show going into our 2nd year. I feel a sense of responsibility to bring the same great experience to each and every audience that has come since Manchester and the London run. I feel proud of what we have created together and a sense of care for the message of the show: the importance of being with family.
The role of Daniel Hillard/Mrs. Doubtfire is iconic. How do you approach bringing your own interpretation to such a well-known character?
It is an iconic role and as a 12 year old boy the movie was a huge part of the formation of my understanding of comedy. Robin Williams gave us such a treat. I approach the role with care, knowing that people love it as much as I do. I also know that I needed to bring myself to it otherwise it would lack life. Each of us are unique and I like to trust that - I bring my own personality, knowledge, experience and fun to the role and in that way, I am freed of feeling in anyone’s shadow.
Transitioning between the characters of Daniel and Mrs. Doubtfire must be quite a challenge.
change team of dressers who make the changes between Daniel and Doubtfire possible - sometimes as quick as 18 seconds!
Can you tell us about your process for switching between these roles?
Well, physically it is a feat and a special mention must go to the quick
In terms of acting process, I find it fun to snap between the two characters; it’s a skill that helped land me the role.
What is your favourite scene in the show?
It’s definitely the pie in the face scene. It’s a farce of perfectly orchestrated comic rhythm and when it flows it is a moment of beauty and joy. Also, it ends with a pie in the face - what else is theatre for?!
MRS. DOUBTFIRE has a heartwarming message about the importance of family and acceptance. How do you think this message translates to audiences today and what do you hope audiences take away from their experience seeing the show?
I think the message that families don’t always stay together and that can be for the best and that you’re going to be alright is very healthy for children, particularly, to hear. But the show is also about the acceptance of any perceived abnormality of what a family is; knowing that we can accept whatever form of family we have as long as we are guided by love and not fear. On its purest level, I hope audiences simply enjoy a great night out having fun and laughing along with one of cinema’s best ever comic creations.

Staff review
Did you know…
• 20,520 words are sung throughout the show, at an average of 144 words per minute, and if Hamilton were sung at the pace of other musicals, it would take four to six hours to perform.
• The rap in the show’s 18th track Guns and Ships is considered to be the fastest song in musical theatre, with an average of 6.3 words a second.
• 890km... is the distance the show’s two revolves (known as a donut!) have travelled over the course of 1500+ shows so far at the Victoria Palace Theatre. This is the same distance as driving from London to Munich.
Groups account handler Theresa Baker recently saw HADESTOWN. Read on to see what she thought of the show…
I was never top of the class in Greek Mythology at school, so was a little unsure if HADESTOWN would be my thing - how wrong I was!
I even did a little homework to be sure of the story beforehand but nothing prepared me for such a fantastic musical theatre treat – the show has quickly become one of my current favourites in the West End.
As the show started and Hermes the narrator entered the stage the atmosphere in the audience lit up – I could tell this wasn’t the first time many
had seen the show and we were in for a treat!
Hermes passionately introduces each of the 4 central characters and carries you on their journey of love & hope into the underworld of HADESTOWN
The angelic chorus of the three Fates and an onstage band bring a backdrop of outstanding music - which is now at the top of my Spotify playlist!
The four main characters of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades and Persephone are played by an
outstanding cast – particularly Orpheus with a beautifully poetic voice and Hades with an amazing resonating deep bass sound.
In short, HADESTOWN is a powerful intertwined story of good versus evil, power verses romance and tragedy versus heartbreak - all set to a fantastic musical score ranging from beguiling modern folk and stretching to contemporary rhythmic jazz & beyond.
HADESTOWN is a pure love story from Ancient Greek times transformed into a captivating and powerful contemporary musical - musical theatre at it’s best for me! Like many in the audience, I plan to be back to see the show again very soon.

Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock & roll. The unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock.
