As the last flakes (we hope) of snow fall on the Great Lakes, we turn our attention to the renewal that comes with spring. It’s amazing what a few rays of sunshine can do for the spirits!
This issue of The Great Lakes Gazette is focused on philanthropy or purposeful giving. As Alpha Kappa Alpha women, our first acts of purposeful giving began in 1908.
Our founders purposefully planned for the betterment of our people as they crafted the plan for the first black sorority. They pooled their pennies to donate food to the less fortunate. They brought culture to a university setting that did not previously exist. They used their organizational skills and talents to establish a framework that was used in establishing the other sororities in the Divine 9. They were the role models for our philanthropy.
Every chapter and soror in the Great Lakes Region purposefully gives when they contribute to the success of The Great Lakes Gazette. It is the willingness to share best practices and accolades across the region that keeps our engine running. Each article is like a bud in spring…..purposefully thoughtful, purposefully written, purposefully entertaining, purposefully given.
Thank you. Enjoy!
Gwendolyn D. BushThe word philanthropy comes from two Greek words – philos meaning to love, and anthropos, meaning humankind. So, philanthropy can accurately be defined as the love of humanity and a philanthropist as one who acts out of love for humankind.
In our modern usage of the word philanthropy, we most often associate it with great wealth We read about wealthy people- millionaires and billionaires - who give enormous amounts of money to various charitable causes But if our perspective on philanthropy is limited to material wealth, it is too narrow Nothing in the etymology of the word suggests that wealth is a criterion To require it would exclude those of us who are not rich from ever being recognized as philanthropists.
In the Gospels of both Mark and Luke, the Bible records the story of a poor widow who joined the line of worshippers in the temple to offer her meager donation. All she had in the world amounted to two small coins, together worth less than a penny. Yet she sacrificially gave those two coins to show her love of God and God’s people. That poor widow was no Warren Buffett, but she was, nonetheless, a great philanthropist.
While philanthropy is not defined by the amount of money given, it merits emphasis that Philanthropy does not require money at all If that is our view of philanthropy, we don’t have the complete picture In fact, there is nothing in the etymology of the word that limits philanthropy to gifts of money. Philanthropy is not an outcome of any amount of money. Rather, it emanates from a loving heart.
The philanthropic heart embraces the opportunity to help others by giving its time, talents, knowledge and skills in the service of others. Those endowed with a philanthropic heart give whatever they must to aid or comfort someone else: an encouraging word, a robust hug, or a warm smile. Those who appreciate the true meaning of philanthropy simply give of themselves, of who they are to make life better for someone else.
What a blessing it is to be a part of a beloved sisterhood, which puts philanthropy in action Let us resolve to be philanthropists of the highest order, possessed of hearts of great compassion and selflessness and motivated by love and “service to all mankind”. Let us be known for our love of humanity – the love we share with those who need us. In all of our endeavors, may we be the heart of philanthropy.
by Soror Alma Forte, Chaplain, Mu Alpha Omega Chapter, Midland, Michiganlthough Dr. Betty Jones and S. Preston of Midland have never thought of hemselves as philanthropists, for more than 50 years they have edicated their time and resources towards organizations that benefit heir community and others. And the couple was recognized locally with n "Outstanding Philanthropist" award on National Philanthropy Day on Nov 15th, nominated by Delta College
rowing up in Florida and South Carolina, respectively, Preston and etty’s churches encouraged them to use their gifts to better the ommunity Betty explained that a common belief in Black communities is “lifting as we climb ”
“I have a lot to be grateful for,” Betty said. “I also feel that once you have gotten (something), you really owe a lot back You need to put some more into the pot so other people can have similar opportunities to reach their dreams “I came to see what we give is really an investment in other people,” Betty added.
This mentality has guided them to thoughtfully contribute resources to support certain causes Betty explained that when they see issues or values that need aid, they direct their attention to supporting those areas. For example, when one of their sons began working for a nature conservancy, the Joneses’ attention expanded to the environment. “Some of these things we’ve just adopted,” Betty said
In addition to the environment, initiatives that are near and dear to Betty are education and social justice. The Joneses have endowed scholarships at Delta College, Hampton University in Virginia and Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina In addition, as contributors to the University of Michigan, the U-M School of Social Services and the Kellogg Eye Center, they are members of the U-M Legacy Society.
Betty serves on the advisory council of the Midland County Historical Society She donated copies of her book, “Pass it On: African Americans in Midland, Michigan 1860-2020,” to the historical society as the beneficiary of all sales. Local libraries, high schools, colleges, universities and several church libraries received complimentary copies of the book.
In her continued pursuit to support education, Betty Jones is a charter member of Mu Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, where she chaired early programs of development for Black youth in Midland and Saginaw. She locally endowed a scholarship in honor of Mu Alpha Omega in 2009
For Preston, the idea of philanthropy is much more than financial donations “When I looked up the definition (of philanthropy), I found one that says, ‘People who give of their time, talent and treasure,’ that made the definition one that I can deal with,” Preston said.
There are many types of philanthropy, including offering volunteer hours, putting talents to use, even simple acts of kindness without expecting anything in return. Anyone can be a philanthropist. “We all ought to be philanthropists in the sense of being able to give to sustain a good life for all of us,” Betty said
Pearl Soror Betty Brown Jones, PhD became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on March 28, 2023. She was initiated in Gamma Theta Chapter at Hampton (Institute) University in 1954

sorority sister can be described in many ways; a nd of sisters united by a bond, solidarity, shared w points, shared goals and experiences In bruary 1973, thirteen strong-minded, sisters of pha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated were inspired to organize a graduate chapter in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The purpose for this desired unity was to continue the perpetuation of sisterhood and service to mankind
Under the name “The Kalamazoo Graduate AKA Women”, the organization set goals towards serving the community and becoming a recognized official chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. This group met the latter specifications through working with guidelines from the national office of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. under the leadership of our Regional Director, Dr Eva Evans On October 27, 1973, this organization was chartered as an official graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and given the name Iota Sigma Omega
“We give thanks and pledge ourselves as Alpha Kappa Alpha women to remember”
Charter members were: * Jacquelyn Barham, Janet Benson, Ruth Burton, Emily Dawson, Brenda Earhart, * Mary Harper, Jacqueline Jackson, Bertha Morgan, Gala O’KeKe, Diane Smith Petway, Jean Phillips, Gloria Quinney, Juliette Smith, Joye Williams and Johnnie Wilhite. (*Ivy beyond the wall)
We’re proud of our rich heritage and connection to L Pearl Mitchell, third Supreme Basileus, who established the Douglas Community Association in Kalamazoo The chapter was host to the Great Lakes Regional conference in 1984. Iota Sigma Omega continues to stand on the shoulders of outstanding leadership of its charter members. We also pay respect for the former leaders who have held high the touch of this outstanding sisterhood
The heart and spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha and the sorors of Iota Sigma Omega are its international programs. Over the years they have expanded the programs and developed numerous partnerships with other organization in and around the Kalamazoo community.
They had attended well-known, prestigious colleges and universities such as Howard, Florida A&M, Kentucky State, Wilberforce, North Carolina Central, Alabama A&M and Morgan State where, as undergraduates, they joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sisterhood
November 17, 1973
Then, in 1973, their love for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority brought them together; eighteen women from Elyria, Lorain, Oberlin and Sandusky, Ohio, as they began the process to establish a graduate chapter There were many meetings and telephone calls as the group worked diligently to see their dream through to fruition Exie Ashburn of Sandusky and Barbara Orr and Dorothy Anderson of Lorain became the liaisons of their respective communities and kept the group on task Finally, on November 17, 1973, Iota Phi Omega Chapter was chartered by Eva L Evans at the home of Dorothy Anderson
Exie Ashburn was chosen as the first Basileus Immediately, the sorors of Iota Phi Omega began to impact their respective communities through programs and service projects The Champagne Breakfast became an annual event Over the years the theme of the breakfast evolved, but the focus remained the same; promoting black culture and pride as well as homage to the black family and outstanding individual leadership and accomplishments The breakfast featured entertainment provided by jazz musicians, theatrical performances, modern and interpretive dance groups It became the signature event of the chapter Another well received event was The Bruncheon on the Bay Onboard the beautiful Emerald Empress of Neuman Boat Line, the sorors and their guests cruised around Sandusky Bay while enjoying a delicious luncheon
Early in 1990, the sorors of Iota Phi Omega were approached by a group of coeds at Oberlin College who wanted to establish an undergraduate chapter Pamela Williams, a student at Oberlin, worked closely with then Basileus Barbara Orr and Lynette Ledbetter in obtaining permission to start a citywide undergraduate chapter, which would become Pi Omicron In addition to Oberlin, Pi Omicron’s charter would also include Ashland University. Over the years many talented women have served Alpha Kappa Alpha through Pi Omicron. Their service programs included working with young girls on character development, support of the arts, celebrating the black family, and awareness of health concerns in the black community. Iota Phi Omega has remained dedicated to keeping Pi Omicron active.
We cherish our memories over the years and look forward to many more years of service, dedication and progress for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Iota Phi Omega Chapter. We will always be there for each other because we know there’s no other, like our sisterhood- ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA
Eta Omicron was chartered Saturday, January 20, 1973. Eva Evans, Great Lakes Regional Director, presented the charter. The Chapter was sponsored by Gamma Chi Omega of Fairmont, West Virginia.
The charter members were: Vickie Buster, Cozette Cleckiey, Anita Crider, Thelma Ford, Carolyn Greei, Gwendolyn Marshall, Kathy Mayfield, Delnora McCullar, Gwendolyn McKinley, Vickie Mosley, Alma Smith, Marie Stevens, and Linda Walton.
Two young women were initiated in May, 1973 They were Norma Heard and Inez Jones.

Colorectal cancer disproportionately affects the black community. African Americans have the highest rate of colon cancer than any racial/ethnic group in the United States. They are about 20% more likely to get colorectal cancer and about 40% more likely to die from it.
Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer in the country. The American Cancer Society recommends that people at average risk begin regular screening at age 45 while those at higher risk should talk with their healthcare provider about starting screening earlier. If any of the following applies to you, then you are considered high risk:
Individuals with a personal and/or family history of polyps or cancer
People over age 50
Those with history of inflammatory bowel disease
Individuals with genetic conditions or family history of a hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome
A personal history of radiation of the abdomen or pelvic area
Screening can often prevent colorectal cancer by finding and removing polyps in the colon and rectum, before they have a chance to become cancer; detect colorectal cancer early, when it is still small, making it easier to treat Screening options include colonoscopy, multitarget stool DNA test (Cologuard) and FIT/FOBT (fecal immunochemical test/fecal occult blood test).
A change in bowel habits
Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool
Cramping or pain in the belly
Unexplained weight loss
The most common symptoms may include: However, there may be no symptoms. Do not wait for symptoms before talking to your doctor.

What do you think when a mysterious package is delivered to your house by a soror who claims not to know where it came from? In Mu Alpha Omega, you think “random acts of sisterliness 44 to be exact ” In celebration of the chapter’s 44th anniversary, sorors surprised and delighted each other with gifts, trinkets and notes of affirmation over a four-week period. During the culmination dinner, it was hilarious to hear the lengths that sorors went to not to be detected or to figure out who was behind the sisterly acts. Subterfuge included sending cards with another soror’s return address (permission granted) or inviting a soror to lunch to “talk” and picking up the tab. Good times!
