Dear Sorors of the Great Lakes Region,
As we gather to celebrate a remarkable 116 years of sisterhood and service to all mankind, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the legacy we uphold and the future we continue to shape. Our founders, visionary women of unwavering resolve and profound foresight, laid the foundation of our illustrious sisterhood with a mission rooted in academic excellence, social justice, and service to all mankind. We honor their vision by continuing to embody the principles and values of which they set the standard.
The Great Lakes Region has a special reason to celebrate this year as we commemorate 100 years of our own regional achievements and contributions to the broader mission of our beloved sorority. This centennial milestone is a testament to the enduring spirit of our founders and the collective effort of every soror who has dedicated herself to our cause over the past century. We have made significant strides in education, community service, and leadership development reflecting the unwavering commitment to our shared values.
In the Great Lakes Region, our centennial celebration is not just a reflection of our past but also a launchpad for our future. We are committed to expanding our reach, deepening our impact, and strengthening our bonds of sisterhood. This year, we will engage in a series of events and initiatives designed to celebrate our history, honor our achievements, and set the stage for the next 100 years of excellence and service.
As we look to the future, let us draw inspiration from our founders' vision and our own regional legacy. Let us continue to lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and uplift our communities with unwavering dedication. Together, we can ensure that our sisterhood remains a powerful force for good in the world.
I am honored to serve as Editor of The Great Lakes Gazette, and excited to publish the remarkable articles written by my sorors. I hope you enjoy this all new edition as much as my committee and I have enjoyed compiling it.
With sisterly love,
This year Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® celebrates 116 years of sisterhood, scholarship, and service to all mankind. Consequently, The Great Lakes Region, comprised of the Michigan, Ohio, Western New York, Western Pennsylvania, and West Virginia Clusters will celebrate its Centennial on September 21, 2024, in Cleveland Ohio As a result, there will be many celebrations throughout the year leading up to this auspicious occasion, and yet some may wonder what exactly IS all the fanfare?
To answer that question, we must look at the sustainability of Alpha Kappa Alpha over time. The organization’s ability to implement programs and initiatives that have had lasting positive impact on communities at large, and collaborations with other organizations and corporations through partnerships are bedrocks. They not only empower women, but create inclusivity among the members of the sorority through the bonds of sisterhood.
Alpha Kappa Alpha, founded on the campus of Howard University, in 1908, began its first step towards sustainability and perpetuity when Nellie Quander, Norma Elizabeth Boyd, and Minnie Beatrice Smith, led the organization towards incorporation- realized, January 29, 1913, making the way for expansion and growth. Ten years later, the Sorority had established over 28 chapters.
The first in the Great Lakes, as history has revealed, was Epsilon Chapter at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, followed by Zeta Chapter established at Wilberforce University, in Wilberforce Ohio, both in 1916, and the initiating chapter of L Pearl Mitchell Since that time our sorority has continued to grow with over 1,060 chapters worldwide. Now that’s sustainability.
The “Pearls” of Alpha Kappa Alpha are its programs and initiatives. Throughout the history of our sisterhood, we have implemented some of the most comprehensive and strategic programs that have contributed to the socioeconomic, political, and overall wellness of all mankind.
a h Health Care Project (MHP) 1935-1942, the sorority fulfilled its mission of service by caring for the neediest among us. Later, in 1965, Alpha Kappa Alpha secured a $4 million dollar contract from the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) to operate the Cleveland Jobs Corps Center (Ohio) The Mississippi Health Care Project and The Cleveland Ohio Jobs Corp Center were programs that launched the Sorority, into the forefront of supreme service to all mankind on a national level.
Even now, Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to be a trailblazer by fostering International Programs to alleviate problems concerning women and young girls, and conditions for people of color. Current program initiatives include, but are not limited to those that address issues with health, wealth, families, and education This is why the Education Advancement Foundation (EAF), For Members Only Credit Union (FMO), and Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Packs (CHIPP) are so important, and an integral part of the fabric that defines what we describe as Supreme in Service.
We understand the assignment when it comes to the essence of uplifting. It begins with understanding that we all are entitled to the basic needs of food, shelter and clothing, and that education and financial wellness are a necessity to one’s growth as a citizen of the world
Our current Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Packs (CHIPP), program, under the umbrella of the “Empowering Our Families” Initiative provides bag lunches and meals for students (Kindergarten to 8th grade) to combat the issue of food scarcity The Educational Advancement Program (EAF) provides funds for scholarships so that students can obtain higher levels of education. The For Members Only (FMO) Credit Union, financially empowers women as the first black-owned, women-led, sorority-based, digitalbanking, financial institution, in the United States.
Politically and socially, Alpha Kappa Alpha has continued to stand in the gap for all mankind, but also for African Americans in general. We participated in the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March We’ve continued the fight for racial uplift by ensuring voter registration for eligible voters and became lobbyist by Lobbying for the AntiLynching Bill (1939) alongside the National Council of Negro Women. We’ve supported the National Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) with our time, talent and finances since its inception. The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha
A new century ushered in the need for increased activism. Many of the issues that we previously addressed, have re-emerged, disguised and cloaked in coded language. Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to be influential in the political realm by combatti voter suppression, advocating for social justice, and providi support for African American female candidates that now ho office such as Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the Unit States, and Kyra Harris Bolden (Great Lakes) Justice of t Michigan Supreme Court. Both of which hold the esteemed ti of “First” in their respective offices, and our members of o illustrious sorority!
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has much to celebrate! The G Lakes Region has much to celebrate! We have much celebrate, and not just the works from the past, but all the w that we continue to do presently, to uplift our people, advoc for our civil rights, and provide supreme service to all mankin

A Risk Management Plan aims to help chapters assess how risks may potentially impact specific projects, programs, events, membership, and general operations. Chapters are expected to develop and implement a Risk Management Plan and annually review the plan. The Chapter’s Risk Management Plan will define how risks will be identified, evaluated, managed, and monitored.
The Risk Management Plan should include the following elements:
Identify: Identify and acknowledge the existence of particular risks, including potential threats to the chapter’s assets, operations, programs, and membership.
Evaluate: Assess the identified risks to understand the scope, severity, and frequency of the risks.
Manage: Develop strategies to manage the risks, such as avoiding the risks, implementing measures to control the risks, or obtaining insurance to transfer the risks.
Monitor: Monitor and observe the effectiveness of the selected risk mitigation strategies over time.
Consider adjusting the strategy as the situation evolves.

Under the leadership of Regional Director Gwendolyn L. Kirtley, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, the Great Lakes Region witnessed an inspiring surge in community engagement and environmental stewardship during our annual Regional Day of Service. Undergraduate chapters, graduate chapters, and interest groups joined forces, aligning with our Enhance Our Environment program initiative and making a remarkable impact across our communities.
The collective efforts of Sorors resulted in planting over 590 trees throughout the Great Lakes Region! This year's community impact represents a significant milestone, with an increase of 80 trees planted compared to our impact in 2023. The Regional Day of Service continues to be a testament to our commitment to environmental sustainability.
The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the chapters and interest groups have been nothing short of inspiring. The increased number of trees planted this year is not just a statistic; it symbolizes our growing legacy of environmental responsibility and community improvement. Each tree planted contributes to cleaner air, enhanced green spaces, and the overall well-being of our neighborhoods. From urban parks to suburban community centers, tree-planting activities have beautified our surroundings and brought communities together. Residents of all ages participated, learning about the importance of trees and how they can contribute to a healthier planet.
I encourage Sorors to continue enhancing our environment, strengthening our communities, and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. We are Greater Together, making a difference, one tree at a time!

Detroit, MI - Theta Tau Chapter at the University of Detroit Mercy celebrated their 50th Chapter Anniversary with a Timeless Reunion Weekend. Events included a history display in the university library, a game night, a workshop service and concluded with a formal tea party. The Timeless Tea Celebration was a lively tribute to Alpha Kappa Alpha's history of service, inspired by "Alice in Wonderland." With teacups clinking and laughter filling the air, the event was a joyful reflection of Theta Tau's close bonds and achievements over the years. The theme reminded everyone of the strength of sisterhood As guests enjoyed the festivities, they were reminded of the lasting impact of coming together to make a difference, creating a legacy of kindness and empowerment The celebration was a special moment to cherish, marking 50 years of sisterhood and the continuing commitment to Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood.
Detroit, MI - Theta Tau Chapter hosted a “Painting with a Twist” event on February 29, 2024 led by Soror Cailyn Calhoun, which perfectly captured the spirit of sisterhood by blending art and fun. It brought together current and former members, creating a sense of unity and nostalgia. Laughter and cherished memories filled the room as paintbrushes moved across canvases, creating a colorful picture of sisterly bonds In this friendly and energetic setting, everyone felt motivated, no matter their skill level Soror Calhoun's vision went beyond art; it connected the past, present and future of sisterhood, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended
In halls where dreams first found their flight, You crafted futures, hearts alight. With books and pens, through nights so long, You wrote your story, brave and strong.
New chapters call, adventures new, The paths unknown, yet bright with hue. Embrace the change, let futures soar, For you are meant for even more.

Let’s reminisce on a time inspired by the vision of the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.®... a time grounded in the essence of sisterhood and supported by scripture. Close your eyes and breathe deeply, allowing your mind to journey back to the year 1908. Picture a group of extraordinary women, driven by a shared vision of unity, service, and sisterhood. These women, the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha, were guided by a deep sense of purpose and love for one another, the community and all mankind.
In Ecclesiastes 4:9, we find these words: "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up." This Scripture embodies the sentient of Alpha Kappa Alpha, "we help each other"
Imagine our founders standing together; their bond unbreakable, their commitment unwavering. Like the woman described in Proverbs 31:25, they were clothed with strength and dignity, and they laughed without fear of the future Their faith in each other and in their shared mission illuminated their path.
As you reflect on their journey, consider the words of Galatians 6:2: "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ" The founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha embraced this principle wholeheartedly; lifting each other up in times of need and standing shoulder to shoulder as they worked to uplift their communities and to ensure the perpetuity of our sisterhood.
Their vision was not only for themselves, but for generations to come. They planted seeds of sisterhood, scholarship, and service that continue to flourish today In the book of Proverbs 27:17, we are reminded: "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." In their unity and support for one another, the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha exemplified this truth Allow this truth to ignite your devotion to sisterhood and togetherness.
Now, envision our sisterhood, in the year 2024, 116 years strong, thriving and uncompromised…connected across time and space by the same spirit of love and service. As you open your eyes and return to the present, carry with you the vision of those who came before you, their love and commitment lighting the way forward. May you also embody the true essence of sisterhood in all that you do; for truly there is no other like our sisterhood, Alpha Kappa Alpha.
