GREETINGS FROM Madam Regional Director

To My Dear Sorors of the Great Lakes Region,

It is an honor and privilege to greet you in this first edition of The Great Lakes Gazette for the “Greater Together” administration.

Since my election as the 30th Great Lakes Regional Director, the love and support shown to me by sorors within the Great Lakes region has been enormous. I am humbled and grateful to each of you. I would like to send pink tea roses to my hometown sorors of Alpha Omega Chapter in Cleveland, Ohio for their constant and unwavering support.

Over the past several months, we have completed many transitions within our sorority. At the regional level, we have instituted the regional theme, Greater Together, and appointed a combined graduate and undergraduate administration whose vision is to focus on leadership development, soror inclusiveness, and increase AKA’s presence in the Great Lakes. We held regional leadership strategic planning sessions, defined community partnerships, hosted the final Undergraduate Roundup & Basilei Retreat, aligned regional vision with the international initiatives and established the Gwendolyn L. Kirtley, “Greater Together”, EAF Endowment Scholarship Fund.

At the national level, Soror Danette Anthony Reed, Supreme Basileus has instituted the theme, Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood and released the 2022-2026 Program Initiatives of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Madam Supreme charged our initial focus to be on our Foundation Initiative, Strengthen Our Sisterhood.

Sorors, you have encapsulated our national theme, Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood and our regional theme, Greater Together in many of your chapter programming and sisterly relations activities. Please continue using these two themes, along with our international program initiatives, to guide your chapter programming.

We have recently concluded the 2022 Cluster Conference season and I want to thank the Great Lakes Cluster Coordinators, Cluster Conference Chairmen, Host Chapter Basilei and Chapters for all your hard work to ensure all cluster conferences were executed efficiently and sisterly.

Save the date, the 92nd Great Lakes Regional Conference will be held March 2-5, 2023, in Cleveland, Ohio.

As I conclude this greeting, thank you to all sorors who galvanized your community and soared to the polls to cast your vote in the 2022 mid-term elections. Congratulations to all sorors who campaigned in any local, regional and national election.

Soaring Greater Together,

FROM THE DESK OF The Editor -In - Chief

Greetings Sorors!

Extra! Extra! Here comes The Great Lakes Gazette!

Madam Supreme Basileus Danette Reed has set a vision of “One Sorority, One Brand.” writing this editor’s letter—the first of the Administration—sitting amongst a lot of moving boxes. Just as I am excited about my new home, I am extremely excited about showcasing the amazing things that are happening in the Great Lakes Region as we usher Alpha Kappa Alpha into its next chapter.

The legacy of the Great Lakes Region’s brand is defined in our moniker “The Great Great Lakes Region.” The Great Lakes Gazette’s mission is to “provide coherence and consistency to the Alpha Kappa Alpha brand and communicate national and regional events to members and the global community.”

The theme of this issue is “Greater Together as We Soar.” The decision to put our Regional Director, Gwendolyn L. Kirtley, on our cover couldn’t have been more intentional, as she embodies the spirit of teamwork and synergy....... as we step into a new spotlight that encourages us to soar.

In closing, I must take a moment to shout out the amazing newsletter staff whose beautiful smiles you’ll see in this issue—thank you! I know it wasn’t easy as I tried my best to articulate my ideas. I truly appreciate every one of you. And, to the ever so accommodating proofreading team, led by Soror Carol Franklin—thank you too!

We hope you enjoy this inaugural issue. Let us know what you think and keep those fantastic articles coming! in the News!

WEST VIRGINIA Cluster News

Under the loving and gracious leadership of Gwendolyn Kirtley, Great Lakes Regional Director, I am delighted to serve as the West Virginia Graduate Cluster Coordinator. Having the privilege of representing the Alpha Kappa Alpha women of the West Virginia Cluster is an honor and a pleasure for me.

West Virginia celebrates a long and rich history of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and we celebrate a significant milestone with the West Virginia Cluster’s first chapters in the waning days of 2022. Nu Chapter, the thirteenth undergraduate, was chartered on December 26, 1922, on the campus of West Virginia State College (now University) by ten tenacious young women: Ione M. Bowyer, Thelma D. Brown (First Basileus), Louise Coleman, Exie Kelly, Clara Fairfax, Ruby Hubbard, Madeline Marshall, Ethel Nunnally, Anna Perry, and Marie Elizabeth Robinson. Sarah Meriweather Nutter, one of our beloved founders, was instrumental in the chartering of the chapter. The chapter has served the campus and community with service programs, including carnivals, teas, fashion shows, pageants, dances, and nursing home volunteering. Nu Chapter is shaped by and produces leaders. Two of Nu Chapter’s graduate advisors have served as Great Lakes Regional Director—Soror Gwendolyn Goldston, 11th Great Lakes Regional Director (1954-1958), and Soror Patricia Petty Wilson, 23rd Great Lakes Regional Director (1994-1998), who also served as Nu Chapter Basileus from 1966-1967.

Various activities were held from October 6-8, 2022, to celebrate this momentous occasion during West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) Homecoming Week. On Thursday, October 6, 2022, the festivities began with the Nu Centennial Gala, a semi-formal affair highlighted with dazzling shades of pink and green. North Atlantic Regional Director Elicia Pegues Spearman, the legacy daughter of a Nu Chapter initiate, delivered remarks. The highlight of the occasion was the announcement of the $126,500 endowment for WVSU sponsored by the Nu Chapter. On Friday, October 7, Nu Chapter donated to the TRIO WVSU program to create a student pantry to address food insecurity on campus. On Saturday, October 8, 2022, Nu Chapter celebrated with a festive pink and green float during the homecoming parade. During the homecoming game, Nu Chapter received special recognition for the Endowed Scholarship.

I speak on behalf of all sorors who were privileged enough to attend the Centennial celebration: Thank you to ladies of Nu Chapter past and present. The attention to detail was exemplary, and your hard work and hospitality were unparalleled. But more than what you did, we appreciate the love and care you displayed in honoring the charter members, past and present chapter members, graduate advisors, graduate advisor committee members, and sponsoring chapter members. Special Tea Roses Soror Samantha Groom, Basileus, Nu Chapter, Soror Patricia Wilson, Graduate Advisor, Nu Chapter for your leadership during this celebration. To each and every Nu Chapter initiate - you are indeed a “Special Kind of Girl.”

As a key pillar of the Great Lakes Region’s vision, leadership development will be intentional and threaded throughout our engagements at the chapter, cluster and regional levels. The committee will leverage the Leadership Development program as it is formally deployed in the coming months from the SOAR administration. We will customize the approach for Great Lakes by utilizing insights from a Leadership Development survey.

Our next committee focus area is supporting workshops for the 92nd Regional Conference in March 2023. We also encourage Great Lakes sorors to prepare to join other sorors in Chicago as we “soar to greater heights” in our leadership journey at the Leadership Seminar in July 2023 – you will not be disappointed!

Community Partners & Sponsorship Committee

The Community Corporate Partnership and Sponsorship (CCP&S) Committee is excited to work as part of an unwavering commitment to lead “change, education and advocacy” in our local communities.

CCP&S serves as one of the means through which the region will fulfill our commitment to:

Being vested in our communities by expanding our commitment to serve all mankind, while strengthening Alpha Kappa Alpha’s (AKA) visibility and positive impact within our communities through strategic, sustainable partnerships

Increasing visibility in our communities by collaborating with other organizations to increase the impact of our service

We will do this by working with sorors throughout the region and across AKA to:

Identify and build diverse relationships with key community, business, civic and government leadership

Engage in open and honest dialogue with many groups who share our goals and objectives to solidly align with and advance our international initiatives and focus areas

Ensure mutual advantage in all our relationships so that others prefer to partner with us to make improvements in the lives of those we serve

Our aim is to help deliver measurable, sustainable progress throughout the region to ensure local communities benefit from our presence and endeavors. We will seek to challenge the status quo and leverage each soror’s time, talent and resources.

StrategicCommitteePlanning GREAT LAKES

“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” This is a quote from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. It occurred during a conversation between the Cheshire Cat and Alice when she asked which way she should go. Organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha, including our Great Lakes Region, are successful because we have a sense of where we are going which manifests itself in our mission and vision, “service to all mankind.” Creating a strategy helps us get there.

Under the direction of Great Lakes Regional Director Gwendolyn L. Kirtley, regional leaders were invited to a Sunday Night Football styled “Leadership Kick Off”, where they were encouraged to “Catch the Vision” of the “Greater Together” administration. In the Great Lakes, Committee = Team.

Regional Director Kirtley shared the cornerstone of her vision; leadership development, inclusion (every soror’s voice counts), and expanding AKA’s community presence (building new partnerships). When we think about building new partnerships, we must think out-of-the-box.

From a leadership perspective, “Greater Together” means that everyone is working for Alpha Kappa Alpha’s and the Great Lakes Region’s success. Some of the projects we undertake may have great benefit to our region; but will have long term impact on our sorority because we are always aligned with Alpha Kappa Alpha’s values. Our leaders strive to build TRUST and RESPECT with each soror. Strategically, this is a “win-win.”

Unlike Alice, the Strategic Planning Committee and our Great Lakes Leaders know where the “Greater Together” administration wants to go; flawless execution, amazed sorors, and an energized Great Lakes. Our strategic plan will help us get there. Catch the Vision, Sorors!

Membership Experience GREAT LAKES

The Membership Experience

During the 2022 Boule in Orlando, the newly installed Supreme Basileus, Soror Danette Anthony Reed, when speaking of Membership, stated: Sorors, can we talk? Can we really talk, membership?

Madam Supreme immediately implemented a membership intake ‘pause’. In addition to our continued focus on Retention and Reclamation, one additional charge she gave to the International Membership Committee, led by Chairman, Soror Jasmine Adkins Moore, is to provide an enhanced Membership Experience for candidates and sorors. This new member program is designed to engage new members from the start, integrate them into the culture of our sisterhood’s high standards, and ensure their ability to commit to lifelong membership.

The new process will now be known as the MEMBERSHIP EXPERIENCE! In order to be eligible to initiate new members, chapters must be certified in this new process to ensure the new material is uniformly delivered around the world. For a chapter to be certified, the Basileus, Membership Chairman, and Graduate Advisor (for undergraduate chapters) must be certified.

Certification is required for chapters seeking to have a Membership Experience:

Graduate Chapters seeking to hold Graduate ME - Basileus and Membership Chairman Undergraduate Chapter seeking to hold Undergraduate ME - Basileus, Membership Chairman and Graduate Advisor

Chapters meeting this requirement during this certification workshop will be eligible to request approval for a Spring 2023 Membership Experience.

This certification workshop is designed to certify chapters in the Membership Experience and provide them with the tools and guidelines necessary for this transformational process for candidates and sorors.

This new process will: Soror Lisa E. Dubose, International Membership Committee member, Great Lakes Region provided an overview of all Membership initiatives including the Membership Experience and Retention and Reclamation during Cluster Conferences.

Provide candidates with a consistent experience globally Focus on identifying and selecting candidates of the highest quality Focus on developing bonds between line sisters and their chapter members

Sorors, more details will be provided during the:

Plenary Report and one Membership Workshop at every Regional Conference Membership Experience Facilitator Certification at Leadership Seminar 2023

Additionally, each chapter will receive the revised 'Reactivation Toolkit' in the Fall 2022 mailing.
