Dear Sorors:

Welcome to the 2022 Cluster Season! Implementation of the International Programs will be the focus of this Cluster Season. Sorors will have an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge, information, and best practices to ensure the successful implementation of the International Program “Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood.” I know that under the leadership of the Great Lakes Regional Director, Soror Gwendolyn Kirtley sorors will implement the programs with fidelity and Sisterly Service.

SORORITY HYMN

The Cluster concept was introduced to the Great Lakes Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in 1976 by Regional Director Dr. Gloria Smith. It was developed to afford members the opportunity to discuss pertinent sorority issues. The West Virginia Cluster was organized under the leadership of Soror Merle Leasure, who was chosen as its first Cluster Coordinator. The first meeting was hosted by Epsilon Delta Omega Chapter of Beckley in 1977. Dr. Gloria Smith was the guest speaker.

At its inception, seven graduate chapters comprised the West Virginia Cluster: Alpha Omicron Omega, Institute; Beta Beta Omega, Charleston; Beta Lambda Omega, Bluefield; Beta Tau Omega, Huntington; Gamma Chi Omega, Morgantown; Epsilon Alpha Omega, Logan; and Epsilon Delta Omega, Beckley. There were five undergraduate chapters: Nu, West Virginia State College; Beta Omicron, Bluefield State College; Eta Zeta, Marshall University; Eta Omicron, West Virginia University; and Nu Pi, West Virginia Institute of Technology.

In 1977, Soror Merle Leasure was replaced as Cluster Coordinator by Patricia Petty, who served from 1978-1984. During her tenure, annual cluster meetings were scheduled in alphabetical order according to the city in which graduate chapters are located. The first Cluster Directory was developed, and the Cluster Newsletter was published. Regional Directors have been invited each year to the cluster meetings. Opportunities for leadership training and better sisterly relations are afforded the members as a result of the cluster. Outstanding local resource persons are invited to be guest presenters and to meet the sorors.

A highlight in the history of the West Virginia Cluster a notable “first” for the Great Lakes Region and for all Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. In 1986, Regional Director Bella Clinkscale asked the West Virginia Cluster to host the annual regional conference and serve as a model for using clusters to host a regional conference. A cluster as host involves a greater number of sorors in the planning and implementation of activities. The West Virginia Cluster “carved its place in Alpha Kappa Alpha History” with this successful venture which left a lasting impression upon Great Lakes Sorors, the Charleston area and throughout the state. Patricia Petty served as conference chairman and Deloris Davis as co-chairman. Since that historic first, the West Virginia Cluster hosted the Great Lakes Regional Conference again in 2001 and 2018.

As the cluster concept continued to have a more significant impact, cluster coordinators were given greater responsibilities by Phyllis Robinson, 22nd Great Lake Regional Director. During her term as Regional Director, Patricia Petty continued to recognize the impact of the position and further expanded its responsibilities. Regional Director Petty disseminated revised guidelines with all chapters' input during her service term. With each new administration, theme, and foci, the commitment of the West Virginia Cluster to sisterhood and service is unchanged. We continue looking to the Alpha Kappa Alpha women of West Virginia to write another chapter in our cluster's history and continue moving forward to be of service to all mankind!
