SOARING TOGETHER

January Meeting

Chaplain’s Corner
Life does not always go according to plan
On a recent family trip to the USA, my husband and I meticulously picked a return flight known for its punctuality Our aim was simple: a 4:21 PM departure would ensure that our children could unwind, bathe, and get to sleep on time, making them ready for school the next day.
Despite boarding at 3:30 PM, we were stationary until 8:50 PM, a full four and a half hours late, and well past bedtime. Initially, I was at peace with the delay due to the stormy weather – I'm no fan of turbulence Yet, the flight was still rough Where was the reward after our long wait? It seemed there wasn't one. Despite our late arrival and my plan being completely upended, I had to have faith that this was God’s plan for our day.
Life often mirrors this experience Our careful plans are sometimes thrown off by unforeseeable events. When we do embark on our journey, it can still be far from smooth But where's the reward for our patience through delays and turbulence?
GAINING MOMENTUM
Chaplain’s Corner
It lies in reaching our destina and the lessons of patience garner en route It lies in trusting that this is the will t God has for our lives. Despit our desire for control, we m acknowledge that we are no ultimate planners
This doesn't mean we shoul abandon making plans. Inst we should write them in pen rather than in permanent marker; we should be ready adapt when necessary. No matter the season you're in –whether you're executing a flawless plan or clinging to faith when the path is unclear – allow yourself the grace to surrender to a God that promises that He can do exceedingly, abundantly, above all you can ask, think, conceive, or imagine

Your progress may be delayed, but you will not be denied. The journey might unfold differently than you expected, but if you entrust it to Him, He assures us that all things will work together for our good, in alignment with His purpose. This, my Sisters, is a matter of trust. Let's move into this year embracing the detours and the lessons they bring, fortified by faith and the sisterhood that binds us. Be still and know.

A TIME TO REFRESH...
2024 Chapter Retreat
Our recent Chapter Retreat, organized by the 2024 Founders’ Day Committee on 27th January 2024, provided a rejuvenating and enriching experience for all attendees From the thoughtful provision of refreshments to the thought-provoking meditation and engaging activities facilitated by dedicated Chapter Members like Sisters Tezel, Lesley, Yasmin, and Chapter Retreat Co-Chair Sister Ramona, every aspect of the event contributed to our collective growth and empowerment.

The weekend of Chapter Retreat ended with the Church Service and Rededication at the spiritual home of our Chapter President, St, Francis Xavier Cathedral on 28th January 2024. The time represented a recommitment to our faith and sisterhood and was appreciated by all in attendance.

President's Reactivation Tea

STRENGTHENING OUR SISTERHOOD Sisterly Reviews
I had a wonderful time at the President’s Reactivation Tea. I especially enjoyed the camaraderie and being able to reconnect with my Sisters. The event was welcoming and heartwarming.
Sister Rhonda Murray

As a random act of kindness, one of my Sisters invited me for coffee unexpectedly Being able to spend quality time with my sister reminded me of the warmth of sisterly love and the strength of our sisterhood
Sister Ramona Wells
I can’t explain the warmth I felt when I received a beautiful floral arrangement as my Secret Sister gift. It was a timely example of not only the beauty in our world, but also of our sisterhood. It was an amazing demonstration to other women of the importance of women supporting women.
Sister Shavonne Smith

I thoroughly enjoyed the President’s Reactivation Tea as it gave me the opportunity to connect with our Sisters on a more intimate level and build some new bonds. This was especially important to me as I had been “out of the loop” for a while.

GOLDEN MEMORIES: REFLECTING ON 50 PLUS YEARS OF SISTERHOOD AND SERVICE
By: Sisters Mia Nottage & R Octavia DeanMcIntosh, 2024 Archives Committee
When the commitment to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is made, the fact that it will be a lifelong commitment is emphasized. To dedicate one’s life to sisterhood, scholarship and service is no small undertaking, particularly with the vicissitudes of life. With that understanding, becoming a Golden Sister is one of the highest honors that a Sister can achieve. It indicates that, for at least fifty (50) years, the Sister has been continuously committed to the Sorority and its endeavors. It is a milestone that is achieved through intentional effort, dedication and an unwavering love for this sisterhood.
In the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter, we have the distinction of having three (3) members that are Golden Sisters. By counting them among our membership, we also acknowledge that through them and their experiences in the Sorority, we have a wealth of knowledge available to us as a Chapter. Having had the recent opportunity to spend time with our “Goldens” (as they are affectionately called), Sister Mia Nottage and Sister R. Octavia Dean-McIntosh were able to delve more into their background and their reasons for joining the Sorority while touching on matters of mentorship, commitment and family life.
Coincidentally, all of our Goldens were initiated through the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Delta Eta Chapter at the then Florida Memorial College with Sisters Linda and Mellany actually becoming line sisters. Our Goldens - Sister Linda Major, Sister Mellany Zonicle and Sister Annie Bain - became members of the Sorority for various reasons.
Sister Mellany shared that she didn’t know anything about sororities when she started college but that her interest was piqued by the Sorority women’s scholarly reputation and seemingly tight bond. Sister Linda, similarly, was enamored with the stature and poise of the AKA women on campus. Sister Linda fondly recounts that the wife of the President of the College, Sister Pearl Puryear (who would later serve as her mentor) was her greatest source of inspiration to join the Sorority and embodied an “Alpha Kappa Alpha woman”. Sister Annie, who completed her secondary education in the United States of America, was first introduced to the Sorority through her attendance at the Florida A&M University High School, as the University had its own Chapter of the Sorority. While there, Sister Annie bore witness to the Sorority’s commitment to service and to the community.
L-R Golden Sister Annie Bain, Chapter President Phylicia Ferguson and Golden Sisters Mellany Zonicle and Linda MajorTo Sister Annie, the camaraderie, sisterhood and scholarship on display from the AKA women at FAMU and the different, impactful service projects they spearheaded in the community solidified her choice. She boasts ‘I knew exactly what I was gonna do when I went to Florida Memorial. There was no doubt in my mind ’
It is clear that our Golden Sisters were impressed by the Sorority’s standards of sisterhood, scholarship and service as well as the commitment of individual Sisters to upholding these standards As GenNEXT Sisters, it is satisfying and pleasing to know that some things never change as these same sentiments are also echoed by the generations after our Goldens.
Recognising that mentorship is a vital part of our Sorority experience, it was imperative that we asked the Goldens about their experience with mentorshipas both mentees and mentors.
Sister Linda shared that she was President of her undergraduate Chapter when she met Sister Thelma McMillan, who was in Miami representing the Eta Psi Omega Chapter at a national function for the Sorority. Sister Thelma, along with Sisters Dolores Smith and Gwendolyn Godet would later mentor Sister Linda as she transitioned to sorority life as a graduate member of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter

These same women, in particular Charter Member (of Eta Psi Omega Chapter) Sister Dolores, pinned their hopes for the then budding Eta Psi Omega Chapter on young women like Sisters Mellany, Linda and Annie who would eventually return home from university and build up the Chapter. Our Golden Sisters did not disappoint and it is surely a credit to their mentors that even today, they continue to be active members of the Sorority and the Eta Psi Omega Chapter.
Sister Annie also shared with us her love and respect for Sisters Dolores and Gwendolyn Godet. Similarly, Sister Mellany shared how impressed she was to be in the company of Sisters Donna Donaldson (Charter Member), Shirley Vanderpool (Charter Member), Dolores Smith (Charter Member) and Thelma McMillan. She recalls that ‘Sister Shirley was special because she had taught me in high school but I was able to develop an intimate relationship with Sister Thelma.’
It is evident that our four Charter Members were resolute in ensuring the success of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter. Their initial advocacy to the Sorority for the chartering of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter was grounded in the belief that the Chapter would be supported by young Bahamian women who returned to The Bahamas following the completion of their tertiary education in the United States of America. This belief became fact and its advent was supported by their intentional love and mentorship of those young women, particularly our Goldens, that returned home.
As now mentors, Sisters Linda, Annie and Mellany are quick to express how much they enjoy connecting with the younger Sisters of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter. Sister Annie commented on the involvement of the GenNEXT Sisters in the Chapter, indicating how much fun she is having getting to know the younger generation and serving with them.
Besides their appreciation of their mentorship in the Sorority, Sisters Linda and Annie regaled us with so many memories of their time in the early days of our Chapter. Even though the Chapter was small, the work being done in the community was impactful and fulfilling. Sisters Linda and Annie fondly recalled meetings being hosted at the homes of other Sisters. Sister Linda was adamant that that was a time when the sisterly bonds were significantly strengthened as even the children of the Sisters would know one another well and help to serve the community alongside their mothers.
L-R Golden Sisters Linda Major, Mellany Zonicle and Annie BainHaving spent more than five decades dedicated to sisterhood, scholarship and service, we wondered whether the Goldens would have done anything differently during their lifetime membership. Reflecting on what she would have done differently, Sister Linda, despite her lifelong active status, would not attend Boulé until her Golden year in 2018 She lamented, ‘If there was one thing I would have done differently, it’s to have attended Boule earlier. You young people have the right idea about enjoying life now. To see that sea of women dressed in all white is just something! The Boulé has so much to offer outside of AKA, the workshops focused on development are all just really good ’ We all agreed that Boulé is truly an event to experience and that led us to converse on how challenging it can be to navigate the personal, career and financial obligations both outside of and related to being an active member of the Sorority
In fact, when asked about what she would do differently, Sister Mellany responded ‘I would have tried harder to balance my career goals and continuous involvement in the Chapter affairs locally and internationally’ It was really validating to hear that our Sisters faced some of the same challenges we face today. We are lucky to be guided by their experience.
It was heartwarming to see that more than sixty (60) years later, our Chapter continues to build on the efforts of our early members. Sisters Linda and Annie recalled that there were never more than twelve to fifteen (12-15) members in those early days, yet the work done by the Chapter stood out and apart from other organizations It is truly a testament to the commitment of our Goldens and others, that today, the Chapter has more than one hundred (100) members and continues to stand out not only locally, but also regionally and internationally (in the Sorority)
When asked about the best part of their time as members of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter, the Goldens, unsurprisingly, referred to the Chapter’s community initiatives, past and present Sister Linda remembers fondly the work done (over the years) with the Children’s Emergency Hostel while Sister Annie counts the development and continued success of the Honour’s Day Scholarship and Award Programme as her favourite Chapter initiative. Sister Mellany reflected that the best part of her Chapter membership has been to witness the Chapter survive various obstacles and remain vibrant. Sister Mellany “pays it forward” and continues to encourage undergraduate Sisters to join the Chapter, just as she was encouraged years ago
After having such an inspiring and vibrant time with our Goldens discussing their past and present experiences with the Sorority, and by extension the Chapter, we wanted to ask our Goldens for their best advice for the Chapter’s GenNEXT Sisters. Sister Mellany stressed the importance of mutual respect between all Sisters. She added that we should align our service initiatives with the pressing social issues faced by Bahamian society. Sister Annie also emphasized the need to be kind to all of our Sisters, no matter the age. She encouraged us to remain committed to the growth and endurance of the Chapter and the Sorority, in whatever capacity one is able. Sister Linda shared how impressed she is by the growth of the Chapter and encouraged us to remember the commitment made to the Sorority.
Ultimately, we understood that our Golden Sisters wanted to impress upon us (and the Chapter at large) the momentousness of ensuring our Chapter’s legacy and continuing of all obstacles.

My Beloved GenNEXT,
As a long standing member and former President of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter, I've had the honour of witnessing the growth, unity, and sisterhood that define our beloved Sorority and Chapter. As I reflect on my journey and the incredible experiences we shared, I feel compelled to offer a heartfelt recommendation to all GenNEXT members of Eta Psi Omega.
First and foremost, embrace your legacy. Our Sorority is built upon a foundation of tradition, friendship, and empowerment. Each one of you contributes to this legacy in your own unique way. Reach out to your Sisters both near and far, and nurture those relationships. Whether it's a simple message of encouragement or a heartfelt conversation, the connections you forge today will enrich your life for years to come.

GENNEXT

Launched in September 2023, the GenNext Initiative of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is geared toward members who are 40 years of age and younger. The GenNEXT Committee of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter, has hit the ground running toward its goals of strengthening sisterly bonds and encouraging younger members to not only act as Chapter leaders, but also to relentlessly pursue their respective individual goals.

Led by Sisters Candace Lockhart-Bastian and Shikita Deveaux, the GenNEXT Committee started 2024 strong with the Founders’ Day event, Sip, Paint & Soar on 15th January 2024 Our Chapter members were able to engage in an interactive activity, while celebrating the tenets of our organisation Our GenNEXT Sister and Ivy Leaf Reporter, Alexis Lightbourne, tapped into her creative centre and led the painting aspect of the event. The individual canvases, once strategically collated, will create a beautiful masterpiece that will be donated to the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre here in Nassau, The Bahamas.
The GenNEXT Committee continued to shine and led a Lunch and Learn session during the recent Chapter Retreat on 27th January 2024. During this session, members of the Chapter had an invaluable opportunity to ask direct questions of our more seasoned Silver and Golden Sisters. Those questions involved a range of topics, including (i) how to balance sorority obligations and family life; (ii) sisterhood; (iii) taking on more responsibility; and (iv) maintaining lifelong sisterhood bonds. It was an insightful activity and the entire Chapter appreciated learning from those Sisters who have set the standard of excellence.

GENNEXT

In the month of love, the GenNEXT Committee hosted a Galentine’s Pajama Game Night on 9th February 2024. The evening was filled with love as GenNEXT Sisters enjoyed great food, drinks, music, and games The camaraderie during the game portion was one for the books and our Sisters looked and felt fabulous in their satin pink and green matching pajamas!

To end the first quarter, our GenNEXT Sisters gathered to shower our Pearl and Golden Sisters, including one of our Charter Members - Sister Dolores Smith, with love and appreciation on 25th February 2024. The GenNEXT Committee presented the Pearl and Golden Sisters with gifts and sang their accolades - both literally and figuratively. It was beyond impactful to spend our time with our Pearl and Golden Sisters, who, even as they were being celebrated, offered us inspirational and encouraging words.
The GenNEXT Initiative, though fairly new, has been a great success The GenNext Committee looks forward to hosting more events that strengthen our sisterly bonds and helps us to uplift our local community

HONEY-DO CLUB

A HONEY-DO IS DEFINED AS THE HUSBAND OF A SISTER WHO WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO MAKE A SISTER HAPPY...
On 17th February 2024, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter, officially launched its “Honey-Do Club” , an initiative to support our Sisters and their spouses. The launch event was planned by Sisters Contanza Adderley Bourne and Shavonne Smith while hosted by Sister Samantha Culmer Kemp at the Palm Cay Clubhouse.
Nine (9) couples had the opportunity to connect with their partners and other couples. From the delicious food, provocative conversation and games led by our sister, Samantha Culmer Kemp, the evening was a great introduction for this initiative. Couples were able to reflect on their love for one another and celebrate that love in a tangible way.

It is of utmost importance to have those closest to us be supportive of the work we continue to do in the community. With the launch of the Honey-Do Club, it is our hope to get the men in our lives more involved in some aspects of our programming in a special way. Sisters are definitely looking forward to the next event.
BOOKS & BRUNCH

The Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Eta Psi Omega Chapter’s Executive Committee were proud and honored to welcome our Sisters initiated in Spring 1984, Iota Lambda Chapter at the University of Florida. The ladies celebrated their 40th AKAversary with a cruise and on their stop in Nassau, donated nearly 100 books for the Ivy Reading Room at Ridgeland Primary School.
Our gratitude goes out to Sisters Yolanda, CC & Jerilyn for fostering this connection at the ‘Welcome Brunch’ hosted on 16th March 2024. A heartfelt thank you for enriching our community. We are grateful for the generosity of our Sisters who display ‘Service to All Mankind’ and who represent the truly global nature of our sisterhood.

SOARING IN THE REGION

BUILDING CAPACITY

Leadership Academy

In a digital age where connection often feels fleeting, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter recently met virtually for a truly meaningful and impactful event: an online ‘Rituals and Protocol Seminar’ entitled ‘Polishing Our Pearls’, the first event presented under of Dolores Smith Leadership Academy (“DSLA”) for the 2024 Sorority Year.
The DSLA is named for one of our Charter Members, Dolores Smitha Pearl Sister of the Sorority. The DSLA launched in October 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 global pandemic It was established for the leadership development of members of the Chapter Now, the DSLA collaborates with the Strengthen Our Sisterhood initiative of the 2022 - 2026 International Program of the Sorority
The ‘Polishing Our Pearls’ virtual seminar was held on Thursday, 21st March, 2024 and showcased our Rituals. The seminar not only served as a platform to deepen our understanding of our Sorority’s traditions but also as an opportunity to cultivate leadership skills among our members.
Rituals hold a special place in the heart of our sisterhood, serving as a bond that connects us across oceans, chapters and generations Through this workshop, we delved into the significance of our Rituals, exploring their relevance in shaping our shared values and identity By understanding the roots of our traditions, we were able to reaffirm our commitment to upholding them with reverence and pride
The workshop went beyond any socalled “refresher” of information as it sparked a newfound enthusiasm among our members
The engagement and participation were palpable as Sisters eagerly participated It was inspiring to witness the depth of connection that our Rituals fostered, bringing us closer together as a cohesive unit Moreover, the workshop served as a catalyst for personal growth and leadership development. By exploring the principles embedded within our Rituals, members gained valuable insights into effective leadership practices. From communication and teamwork to integrity and accountability, our Rituals serve as a blueprint for ethical and empathetic leadership.
As we move forward, the lessons learned from this workshop will continue to resonate within our Sisters and the Chapter. Armed with a deeper understanding of our traditions and a renewed sense of purpose, we are better equipped to serve with confidence and compassion. Together, we will uphold the legacy of our sisterhood, guided by the timeless wisdom of our Rituals.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Chapter President, Phylicia Ferguson and to every Sister who participated in this enriching experience. Your enthusiasm and dedication exemplify the spirit of Eta Psi Omega, and we look forward to continuing our journey of growth and sisterhood together.

Our Youth

The overarching theme for this year is: ‘Soaring Through Excellence’ , and for the first quarter, two impactful sessions have been held On 3rd February 2024, the first session focused on ‘The Transformative Power of Self-Love’ In this session, we set out to remind the young ladies of the importance of self-love, and encouraged them to utilise several tools to increase overall self-esteem Our guest speaker, Ms Chantel O’Brien, Miss Bahamas Universe 2021 and notable motivational speaker, reinforced the power of selfworth and self-love. The session concluded with a mini painting segment, led by Sister Alexis Lightbourne. The segment allowed the young ladies to customise their very own “Pretty Pouches”- a cute bag that holds female essentials for “freshening- up” during the day
The second session, held on 2nd March 2024, featured a ‘Human Library’ with a focus on self-discovery and selfexpression by exploring career options. Chapter members and other esteemed members of the community acted as “books” that our young ladies could “check out” and sit with for ten (10) minutes to “read” or learn all about their professional careers

Empowered Families: Nurturing Holistic Wellness in Our Community
In a spirit of empowerment and unity, the devoted women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Eta Psi Omega Chapter, orchestrated a transformative event on 20th February, 2024 entitled The 'Empowered Family Network' . This event unfolded during the Ridgeland Primary School's Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A.) meeting, leaving an indelible mark on our community.
With the resonating theme of 'Healthy Heart, Healthy Living, and Healthy Families, ' our aim was to empower our community with knowledge, resources, and a shared commitment to holistic wellness. The event brought together families, educators, and community members, fostering a sense of togetherness and a collective pursuit of healthier lives.
The gathering featured a lineup of informative speakers who shared their expertise and insights. Mrs. Phylicia Ferguson, our esteemed Chapter President, set the tone for the evening with her opening address, emphasising the significance of holistic well-being for families. Dr. Kristen Darville-Gardner, a Pediatric Dentist and dedicated Chapter Member, provided invaluable insights into dental health, offering practical tips for maintaining healthy smiles within our households.
Additionally, Mrs. Rhonda Wright, a Lifestyle Coach and past Chapter President, shared her wisdom on cultivating wellness habits that extend beyond the individual to the entire family unit.

The Empowered Family Network event went beyond informative speeches; it was a dynamic experience designed to nurture not just individuals but entire families towards brighter, healthier futures. Hearthealthy activities were seamlessly woven into the fabric of the evening, engaging participants in a range of fun and educational activities.
The atmosphere was charged with positivity and a collective commitment to fostering well-being within our families. Attendees were not just passive listeners but active participants in their health journeys, taking home practical knowledge and actionable steps towards achieving holistic wellness.
As we look back on the inaugural Empowered Family Network event, we are filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. The impact reached far beyond the school's meeting space, resonating within our local community as families embraced healthier living. The event stands as a testament to our Chapter's dedication to empowering and uplifting our community, one family at a time. In the spirit of unity, growth, and holistic wellness, we look forward to continuing our journey towards building a healthier, happier community.

MLK Day of Service Majority Rule Day
At the outset of the 2024 Sorority year, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter committed to performing, at minimum, nineteen hundred and eight (1,908) hours of community service for the year. On that basis, the Chapter introduced the P E A R L Award - Purpose. Empowerment. Assistance. Responsibility. Leadership. This initiative challenged Chapter members to complete a minimum of twenty (20) community service hours each and to honor purpose-driven service while encouraging leadership in community volunteering To earn the P E A R L Award, our Sisters are ‘Strengthening Our Sisterhood’ by participating in Chapter coordinated service projects and community events and by ‘Uplifting Our Local Community’ an initiative of the Sorority.
On 20th January 2024, the Uplift Our Local Community Committee participated in a joint community service project with the Nassau, Bahamas National PanHellenic Council Chapter at the Willie Mae Pratt Center for Girls. As part of that community service project, members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter, along with other members of the ‘Divine 9’ sororities and fraternities led and participated in a seminar for the young women at the Centre. Sister Margo led the meditation while Sister Robyn shared her insights on the keys to success.

TREE PLANTING COMMUNITY AND HOME GARDENS WASTE REDUCTION SHREDDING AND ELECTRONICS RECYCLING DAY
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter’s ‘Enhance Our Environment’ Committee aims to provide various strategies to improve and protect our environment, consistent with the 2022 - 2026 International Program of the Sorority.
To date, the Committee has organised a ‘Tree Planting, Waste Reduction, Shredding and Electronics Recycling Day’ in addition to a Community and Home Gardens initiative in partnership with local primary school, Ridgeland Primary School, led by our Golden Sister Annie Bain.
In January 2024, the Committee also introduced the ‘Bring Your Own Tumbler’ campaign whereby Chapter Members were encouraged to keep with them and use a tumbler during Chapter meetings and events. It is the Committee’s hope that this campaign will result in Chapter members maintaining more sustainable habits that ultimately protect the environment.
Besides this, on 25th February 2024, the Committee partnered with the GenNEXT Committee to donate small tokens of appreciation and love (in the form of fresh produce) to the Chapter’s Pearl and Golden Members.
On 21st March 2024, the Committee partnered with the St. Cecilia’s Catholic School’s Eco-Club to visit and tour The Bahamas’ National Ecology Park. This tour aims to help the members of the Eco-Club to learn more about The Bahamas’ natural environment and the importance of protecting the same.

OUR ECONOMIC WEALTH LAUNCH OF THE PRETTY PURSE CHALLENGE
Under the auspices of the ‘Build Our Economic Wealth’ Committee, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter launched an innovative initiative called the ‘The Pretty Purse Challenge’ in February 2024. This was done in an effort to promote financial health and to strengthen our sisterly bonds
Chapter members are encouraged to participate in this unique savings program, designed to alleviate some of the costs associated with Chapter membership, particularly annual dues.
It is the hope of the Committee that this initiative will also foster a culture of accountability and support within the community of our Chapter.
Although simple, the concept is powerful. Each Chapter member is urged to save forty-four dollars monthly (B$44.00) or eleven dollars weekly (B$11.00) in the time leading up to the December General meeting. If this savings plan is followed, at the end of the challenge, participants will have saved the entirety of their 2025 membership dues. This strategic approach aims to ease the financial strain often associated with dues payments, allowing our Sisters to focus on other meaningful contributions to the Chapter.
A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication that is generally about one main topic of interest to its subscribers Newspapers and leaflets are types of newsletters. For Newspapers and leaflets are types of newsletters
The Pretty Purse Challenge isn't just about saving money it's also about creativity and collaboration. The launch of this savings initiative coincides with the introduction of Sister Circle activities, which will provide Sorors with a supportive environment to discuss personal finance goals, share strategies for saving and investing, and accountability partners.
OUR ECONOMIC WEALTH
Through these Sister Circles, Chapter members will have the opportunity to learn from one another, offer encouragement, and celebrate each other's successes along the way.
To make the challenge even more fun, Sisters have been encouraged to form small groups to design their own ‘pretty purses’ by 13th May 2024 The Committee will then identify the ‘prettiest purse’ and that Sister will win a prize. In December 2024, a prize will also be awarded for best kept purse and the most money saved!
The Pretty Purse Challenge symbolises the aspirational ideals behind the Build Economic Wealth Initiative that forms part of the 2022 - 2026 International Programme of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®, more specifically financial security and sisterhood solidarity in working toward financial security.

FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In honoring the essence of the infamous quote by the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated), the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter’s Advocate for Social Justice (“ASJ”) Committee has organized several events in addition to the implementation of several key events and initiatives to date.

The Committee’s overarching objective is to promote fairness and equity to empower our communities, especially for women and children. In January 2024, the Chapter collaborated with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Pi Upsilon Omega (Freeport, Grand Bahama) and Tau Nu (the University of The Bahamas) Chapters to produce and share digital content on the respective social media platforms of all chapters centred on the 57th anniversary of The Bahamas’ Majority Rule Day observed on 10th January, 2024.

FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
Majority Rule Day is celebrated on 10th January annually, and is the epitome of advocacy for social justice in the Bahamian context as it memorialises the day when the majority of (Black) Bahamians were represented in the House of Assembly, i e Bahamian Parliament.
The aforesaid digital content paid homage to Bahamian freedom fighters, particularly women, that paved the way for national advancement in every aspect of Bahamian life While recognizing the past, the commemoration also highlighted the need for more strategic action in the constitutional, political, social, cultural and economic aspects of life for Bahamian citizens
Additionally, the above-mentioned chapters also issued a joint Press Release to urge local authorities to stand against the alarming increase in crime rates in the country, particularly in New Providence. The chapters recommended initiatives to address the root causes of crime and highlighted women and children as the vulnerable groups most impacted by the recent incidence of crime, both directly and indirectly
On 20th February, 2024, the ASJ Committee of the Chapter coordinated and hosted ‘The Roundtable: Women Uniting Against Crime’ with featured panellists, Dr Aubynette Rolle (Managing Director - Public Hospitals Authority), Dr Phillipa Dean (Mental Health Therapist), Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings (Royal Bahamas Police Force), and Senior Magistrate Sandralee Gardiner (Judiciary of The Bahamas and Chapter Member)
The panel discussed the causes of crime and contributing factors, sought to understand the impact of crime on society, identify solutions and strategies, and offer support to victims and society to cope. Subsequently, the Chapter shared Dr. Dean’s Mental Health Resources Directory and savvy self-care tips in recognition of International Women’s Day
In March 2024, the Committee implemented a social media campaign entitled, ‘#InspireInclusion’ during International Women’s Week (4th - 10th March, 2024). The week long itinerary consisted of members of the Chapter providing empowering messages and quotes, sharing statistics to highlight the need for gender equality, highlighting contemporary women excelling in their fields, sharing stories about unsung women heroes, sharing photos of themselves wearing the colour purple, creating a carousel post with women who provide inspiration to their lives and sharing tips on self love and self care.
