ohne Anwesenheit ist ein integraler Bestandteil von Kunst und Wissenschaft. Diese sind konzeptionell damit betraut, eine Art von Vertraut­ heit zu schaffen, die anschaulich, aber vielleicht nicht erfahrbar ist. Doch manchmal sickern auch andere Arten von Nähe ein, die nicht ganz so raffi­ niert verhandelt werden. Im indischen Grenzstaat Manipur widersetzen sich die radikalen Jugend­ lichen den hegemonialen Kulturen des indischen Festlandes (Bollywood) und der nordamerika­ nischen Franchises (Hollywood), indem sie nur noch raubkopierte koreanische Blockbusterfilme schauen.

Ihre Musik, Mode, Handyvideos und sogar Liebes­ erklärungen sind zunehmend von koreanischen Trends bestimmt, obwohl ihr Leben in der HimalayaProvinz keine Ähnlichkeit mit der koreanischen Super-Urbanität hat. Neben dem Impuls, der hege­ monialen Macht zu trotzen, bilden Formen der ­abstrakten Repräsentation und fantastischen Imagi­ nation die Koordinaten, die vielleicht diese Art von distanzierter Nähe prägen und rechtfertigen.

Und doch haben sich bestimmte Erinnerungen ohne Taktilität gebildet, noch bevor sich Intellekt und Entscheidungen zu entwickeln begannen.

Die ­Farben Asiens, die Landschaften Afrikas, die Stadtbilder Europas, die Weiten Amerikas, die Bil­ der von ­,natives‘ haben uns zunächst als gedruckte ­Bilder auf Keksdosen und Babynahrung erreicht – und sich im weiteren Verlauf des Lebens in Ansichts­ karten verwandelt. Das war die Geschichte des Jahrhunderts vor der Ära des Internets: als die ­Kolonialisierung das Reisen begehrenswert und die Migration zum Zwang machte. Das Fernweh wurde durch diese Erzählungen sorgfältig ­ausgearbeitet. All das steht jetzt auf dem Spiel.

Die steht auf dem Spiel, die Sozialität steht auf dem Spiel, und das Fernweh ist fast zu einem schändlichen Gefühl geworden.

Unser Sinn für Maßstäbe – für Intimität, für Zugang, für Entblößung, für Vertrautheit, für Distanz, für Abwesenheit, für PLU (people like us) – steht auf dem Spiel. Wir werden dazu gebracht, gegenüber jedem, der außerhalb der Familie, der kleinsten ­Einheit steht, einen Reflex des Misstrauens zu ­entwickeln. Die gefürchteten Anderen, die neuen ,natives‘, sind jetzt in den Nachbarschaften, in den Supermärkten, in den öffentlichen Parks, unter den Kolleg*innen. Doch auf dem Flachbildschirm der Kommunikations­technologien sind alle gleich weit entfernt und gleich zugänglich. Mit der rasanten Nicht-Materialisierung der Dinge um uns herum

werden die Maßstäbe überflüssig. Jetlags werden durch Computermüdigkeit ersetzt. Kinosäle sind zu Webserien geschrumpft. Ausstellungen sind jetzt Instagram-Fotos. Symposien und Vorträge haben sich in Musik zum Joggen ­verwandelt. In der Sprache des Films gesprochen ist unser Alltag zu einem ver­ längerten mid shot geworden – fein säuberlich in die Zoomanwendung verpackt. Doch es gibt neue Vulne­ rabilitäten. In der Gleichförmigkeit des Zoom-mid shots wird die sprachliche Disparität noch deutlicher hervorgehoben – jedes Umhertasten, jedes Zögern, jeder Ausrutscher wird bemerkt und registriert. Ein öffentlicher Auftritt wird aus dem intimen Raum des ­eigenen Laptops heraus inszeniert. Auch hier steht der Begriff der Wahrnehmung auf dem Spiel. sind die neue Kartografie für mid shot-Interaktionen: wer schläft also wann und wer bleibt wach? Es gibt Nachtstädte und es gibt Nachtmenschen, denn ihre Nächte sind für einige andere bequeme Arbeitszeiten. Einige dieser Nacht­ menschen arbeiten in der Plattformökonomie, einige bereinigen die Inhalte in den sozialen Medien, einige kümmern sich um Beschwerden und Klagen, einige werden angeheuert, um im Auftrag ihrer Kund*innen Onlinespiele und -wetten zu spielen.

Kurzum, sie sind die billigen Arbeitskräfte in der ­globalen digitalisierten Wirtschaft und Unter­ haltungsindustrie. Diese Fabriken, die meist im ­Globalen Süden angesiedelt sind, beliefern vor allem den Globalen Norden. Also halten sie sich unab­ hängig vom lokalen Sonnenstand durch die CST (zentrale nordamerikanische Standardzeit) oder die MEZ (mitteleuropäische Zeit) hindurch wach. ­Daraus hat sich eine breite Gemeinschaft von ­Menschen in ent­ wickelt. ,Off-Daylight‘ ist die neue Arbeitszeit für die ansonsten ortsungebundenen, über den ­ganzen ­Globus verstreuten Arbeitskräfte.

Uhrzeit ist nicht Zeit, sondern ein politisches und wirtschaftliches System, das in gewisser Weise alle Ungereimtheiten der Weltordnung enthält.

Ich bin in einer Industriestadt aufgewachsen, wo die Zeit durch den Klang der Sirenen abgebildet wurde, die den Beginn und das Ende der Fabrik­ schichten markierten, die 24 Stunden durchliefen.

Aus politischer Zugehörigkeit oder aus Wider­ stand gegen hegemoniale Mächte, und zu anderen Zeiten auch um die menschliche Arbeitskraft zu optimieren und die Kosten für die Infrastrukturen zu senken, haben verschiedene Nationalstaaten im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts ihre Uhren umgestellt.

Die ­Weltzeituhr (Greenwich Mean Time, heute UTC – Coordinated Universal Time) wurde Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts vom Britischen Empire als Antwort auf die neu entwickelten Eisenbahnen erfunden, die ihre Menschen und Waren zu und von den Kolonien in einer Geschwindigkeit trans­ portierten, die schneller als der Tagesverlauf war. Mehr noch scheinen die Zeiger der Uhr nun ­angesichts der Geschwindigkeit und des Rhythmus der globalen Digitalität aus dem Takt zu geraten,

vor allem angesichts der durch die Pandemie ­verursachten Ordnung. Während das Leben und die Interaktionen – ermöglicht durch die digitale Welt – für eine größere Geschwindigkeit und eine größere Reichweite gesorgt haben, ist die territoriale ­Ausdehnung aufgrund der LockdownGovernance geschrumpft und hat eine noch tiefere mit sich gebracht. Die Linearität der ­Uhrzeit hat es versäumt, auf solche gelebten Widersprüche einzugehen. Wir müssen neue Wege ­entwickeln, um die Zeit zwischen uns, die wir uns in einer anderen solaren befinden, zu nutzen.

Nicht nur die Zeiger der Uhr, sondern auch unsere eigenen drohen irrelevant zu werden.

Das vorherrschende Misstrauen gegenüber Händen, das als Maßnahme gegen die Ausbreitung des Virus propagiert wird, droht zum Sinnbild einer neuen, im Entstehen begriffenen Gesellschafts­ ordnung zu werden. Hände, die in der Ära der mate­ riellen Produktion gleichbedeutend mit Werkzeug, Ge­schicklichkeit, Gedächtnis, Reflex, Träger waren und später mit dem Aufkommen der Care-Theorie und der Kulturwissenschaften als Versorger, als Ernährer, als Geste, als Zeichen, als kultureller Signifikant in den Fokus gerieten; sie werden nun als Quelle der Kontamination isoliert. Das deutet auf ein Ende der Relevanz von Individuen und ­Körpern im öffentlichen und kulturellen Leben, im Produktionszyklus und auch in zukünftigen ­Entwicklungsschemata hin. Diese Unsicherheiten werden sich wahrscheinlich auch auf die öffentliche Wahrnehmung der Rolle kultureller Handlungen auswirken. Mit einer allgemeinen Akzeptanz von Notstand und Austerität läuft die Kunst Gefahr, in den Bereich des Überflüssigen und Unwesent­ lichen verbannt zu werden. Eine Ausbreitung der in einer so elemen­taren und ­paranoiden Gesellschaft ist keine wilde ­Spekulation. Die Kunst muss sich neu erfinden, in einer Rolle, die dem Kuratieren einst zugedacht war: sich zu kümmern.

Im Programmplan 2021 der ADKDW wollen wir uns mit all diesen gleichzeitigen Strömungen – Nähe, Öffentlichkeit, Zeitzonen, Wachsamkeit, Hände, Melancholie, Zeitlichkeit, Isolation, Soli­ darität – beschäftigen. Eine Kunstinstitution muss in der gegenwärtigen Zeit therapeutisch sein und neue Wege imaginieren, um Solidarität herzustellen, indem sie andere Maßstäbe für das Zusammensein entwickelt. Allerdings sollten therapeutische Inter­ ventionen mit einer gewissen Verspieltheit und Beweglichkeit konzipiert werden. Die Zeit ist schwer unter unseren Füßen und wir müssen leichtfüßig sein, um durch das Terrain der Zeit zu gehen.

without presence has been an integral part of art and academics. Conceptually they are entrusted with creating a kind of familiarity that is vivid yet may not be experiential. But some­ times other kinds of proximity that are not-so-­ sophisticatedly negotiated can seep in too. In the ­border state of Manipur in India the radical youths resist the hegemonic cultures of mainland India (Bollywood) and the North American franchises (Hollywood), and choose to watch only pirated Korean blockbuster films. Their music, fashion, cell phone videos and even love declarations, increas­ ingly bear the stamp of Korean trends; though their lives in the Himalayan province bear no resemblance to Korean super-urbanity. A kind of abstract repre­ sentation and fantastical imagination, besides the impulse to defy the hegemonic power, are the two coordinates that perhaps shape and justify this kind of distant proximity. Yet certain memories without tactility got formed even before intellect and choices began to evolve. Colors of Asia, land­ scapes of Africa, ­cityscapes of Europe, expanses of America, images of ‘natives’ have reached us at first as printed images on the tins of biscuits and baby food – to be converted into picture postcards at a later stage in life. This, of course, was the story of the century before the era of internet: when coloniza­ tion made travel desirable and migration a compul­ sion. ­Wanderlust was carefully crafted through these ­narratives. All of that is at stake now. is at stake, sociality is at stake, wanderlust has almost become a shame.

Our sense of measurement – of intimacy, of access, of exposure, of familiarity, of distances, of absence, of ‘PLUs’ (people like us) – is at stake. We are made to develop a reflex of distrust towards anyone who is outside the smallest unit of the family. The dreaded others, the new ‘natives’ are now in the neighborhoods, in the supermarkets, in the public parks, among one’s colleagues. Yet, on the flat screen of communication technologies all are equally dis­ tant and equally accessible. With the rapid non-­ materialization of things around us the measuring scales are getting redundant. Jet lags are now replaced by computer fatigue. Movie theatres are shrunk into web series. Exhibitions are now Insta­ gram photos. Symposiums and lectures have turned into music for jogging. In film language our every­ day has turned into a prolonged mid shot – neatly boxed in the zoom facility. But there are new vulner­ abilities. In the equality of zoom mid shots, the

language disparity is getting even more highlighted – each fumble, each hesitancy, each trail off is being noticed and registered. A performance in public is being staged from the intimate space of one’s own laptop. Again, the notion of perception is at stake. are the new cartography for the mid-shot interactions: that is, who sleeps when and who keeps awake? There are night cities and there are night people, because their nights are the convenient working hours for some others. Some of these nocturnal people work for platform economy, some clean the contents in social media, some attend to complaints and grievances, some are hired to play the online games and bets on behalf of their clients – in short, they are the low-end labor in the digitalized economy and entertainment of the world.

These factories, mostly situated in the Global south, cater mostly to the Global north. So, they keep awake through the CST (Central Standard Time of America) or the ECT (European Central Time) ­irrespective of the local position of the sun.

This has developed a wide community of people of . Off-daylight is the new factory rhythm for the otherwise footloose, site-loose work force scattered all over the globe.

Clock is not time but a political and economic system and, in a way, contains all the inconsistencies of the world order. I have grown up in an industrial town where the time was mapped by the sound of the sirens that marked the beginning and the end of the factory shifts that ran through 24 hours. Follow­ ing political allegiance or resistance to hegemonic powers and also, at other times, in order to optimize the human labor and reduce the infrastructural cost, various nation-states have altered their clocks through the 20th century. The world clock (Green­ wich Mean time, now called UTC – Coordinated Universal Time) was invented by the British empire in the mid-19th century in response to the newly developed railways that carried their people and the goods, to and from the colonies, in a speed faster than the progression of the day. Moreover, in front of the speed and rhythm of global digitality, especially in the face of the pandemic-induced order, the hands of the clock appear to move even more off the sync with time. While the lives and interactions – facili­ tated at the digital domain – have ensured greater speed and wider outreach; the shrinking of the terri­ torial expanses due to the lock-down governance have brought in deeper . The linear­ ity of the clock has failed to attend to such lived-in

contradictions and we need to evolve newer ways of doing times between us who are placed in different solar .

Hands of the clock is not the only impediment but our own too are being threatened to fall into irrelevance. The prevalent distrust in hands, widely advocated as a measure against the spread of the virus, might become emblematic of a new social order that is about to emerge. Hands that in the era of material production were synonymous to tool, skill, memory, reflex, carrier and so on; and later with the emergence of care theory and cultural ­studies came into focus as care giver, as nurturer, as gesture, as signs, as cultural signifier are now being isolated as a source of contamination.

This hints at an end of relevance of individuals and bodies in the public and cultural life, in production cycle and also in future development schemes.

These uncertainties are also likely to affect the ­popular ­perceptions about the role of cultural actions. With a general acceptance of emergency and austerity, art runs a danger of being relegated to the realm of excess and non-essential. A spread of in such an elementary and paranoid society is not a matter of wild specula­ tion. Art needs to reinvent itself in the role that curating was meant to be at the beginning: to take care.

In the program plan of 2021 of the ADKDW we wish to engage with and immerse into all these ­concurrent streams – proximity, publicness, time zones, wakefulness, hands, melancholy, temporality, isolation, solidarity. An art institution needs to be therapeutic in the current time and imagine newer ways of forging solidarity – by developing different measurements for being together. Yet therapeutic interventions need to be conceived with certain ­playfulness and agility. The time is heavy under our feet and we need to be light on our toes to walk through the terrain of time.

das erste Material, das ich unserer Sammlung hinzufüge, das erste, was ich mit Dir teilen möchte, sind Auszüge aus dem Buch The Falling Sky: Words of a Yanomami Shaman von Davi Kope­ nawa und Bruce Albert. Alle Zitate stammen aus Merchandise Love, dem dritten und letzten Kapitel des Buches. Wie Du weißt, ist es die Aufgabe des Schamanen, das Gleichgewicht her­ zustellen und ein Fallen des Himmels zu verhindern. Er muss den Himmel ­hochhalten. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger.

Bitte achte bei der Lektüre vor allem auf die Handarbeit im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes – auf die sehr spezifische Art und Weise, wie die ,Yanomami‘ Materie und Materialien zirkulieren lassen; das ist das ‚Herstellen‘, um das es eigentlich geht. Das Her­ stellen einer Lebensweise, die sich systematisch der ‚Leidenschaft für Waren‘ verweigert. Ein ,Yanomami‘-Leben, das täglich und kunstvoll hergestellt wird – aus Samen und Asche und Knochen und Blättern und Händen und Flügeln und Flossen und.

um dieses Material von Kopenawa, diesem Wald, zu empfan­ gen und es in meine Knochen eindringen zu lassen, habe ich etwas ,Rapé de Samaúma‘ genommen. Es vibriert noch immer in mir: Das ,Yanomami‘-Material, Kopenawa, ruht wie eine Schlange nach einer großen Mahlzeit, während ich diesen Text mit Dir webe. Grünes Schreiben.

Es war Sabá Marinho, der mir den mächtigen SamaúmaBaum zeigte, der in der Nähe seines Hauses in der Kautschuk­ plantage lag – er war mitten in den Wald gestürzt, eine Lich­ tung öffnend. Während wir auf seinem liegenden Stamm balancierten – der Baum war noch sehr lebendig –, deutete Sabá auf den um­liegenden Wald: „Die Heilmittel für Krebs und alle anderen Krankheiten finden sich in diesem Wald hier.“ Sabá war ein erfahrener Kautschukzapfer, ein Freund von Chico Mendes, mit dem er und weitere Mitstreiter*innen die Gewerkschaft der Kautschukzapfer*innen in Xapuri, Acre, im Nordwesten Brasiliens organisierten.

Ich taste, schaue an, höre, fühle, denke beim Betreten des Waldes an unsere Materialsammlung. Ich hätte jedes einzelne von ihnen auswählen können, um es hier mit Dir zu teilen.

Ossaim ist der, der vorauseilt. ,Ewè ô Assá!‘ Derjenige, der alle Geheimnisse der Blätter kennt, derjenige, der auch ein Vogel sein kann.

Das zweite Material ist ein ,Ossaim‘ -Lied, mit dem „die Blätter gebetet werden“ (rezar as folhas). Ohne Verzauberungs­ gesang funktionieren die Blätter nicht. Um es unserer Samm­ lung hinzuzufügen, habe ich die ,Yá‘ Wanda de Omolu gebeten, eine Audioaufnahme von ihrem Gesang zu machen.

Verbrennen wir die Gebeine eines großzügigen Mannes, so behandeln wir die Knochen seiner Hände, ungeachtet der Ursache seines Todes, mit besonderer Sorgfalt. Wir betrachten sie als wertvolle Gegenstände, denn mit seinen Händen hat er freigiebig Nahrung und Güter ausgeteilt.

Der Anblick der Knochen seiner Finger stimmt uns traurig und nostalgisch. Deshalb sind wir sehr darauf bedacht, dass bei der Einäscherung nichts von ihnen verloren geht. […] Gelegentlich verzehren die zur Zeremonie geladenen Gäste einen Teil der noch warmen Asche, die dem Boden des Mörsers entnommen wird, wo die verkohlten Gebeine gerade zermahlt wurden. […] Wir in Watoriki halten es für gefährlich, frische Totenasche zu verzehren. Aber die Xamathari tun es, um sich den Atem des Verstorbenen anzueignen und so ein Abbild seines nõreme-Lebens­ prinzips zu bewahren.

Wie ich schon sagte, behalten wir Yanomami die Gegen­ stände, die wir herstellen oder erhalten, nicht, auch wenn wir deswegen verarmen sollten. Wir bieten sie bald denen an, die uns darum bitten. So entgleiten sie schnell unseren Händen, um ständig von einer Hand zur anderen zu gehen.

Aus diesem Grund besitzen wir im Grunde genommen keine eigenen Güter.

Das Lied stammt von einem weit entfernten Ort. Es ist auf Iorubá, und die Aufgabe, es zu übersetzen, ist aufgrund seiner vielfältigen Varianten, der mündlichen Überlieferungsprozesse und der historischen Besonderheiten eine äußerst komplexe Aufgabe. Wie Amora Pêra mir gegenüber bemerkte, gleicht jedes Wort dieses Liedes einem Haus. Deshalb habe ich mich entschieden, es nicht zu übersetzen. Aber ich kann Dir sagen, dass es sich bei Peregun um ein Blatt handelt, das im Portugie­ sischen als ,Pau-d’água‘ (Duftender Drachenbaum) bekannt ist, das ursprünglich in ganz Afrika verbreitet war, aber inzwischen auch in Brasilien einfach zu finden ist. Es gilt als ein sehr altes Blatt und wird hauptsächlich in den Riten für verschiedene ,Orixás‘ verwendet. Während Du diesem Mate­ rial, dieser Stimme zuhörst, bitte ich Dich in den Tijuca-Wald zu gehen, den atlantischen Wald, der wieder aufgeforstet wurde, der riesig ist und der sich noch immer stolz erhebt, ver­ woben mit der Stadt Rio de Janeiro. Mitten in diesem Wald hat sich ,Ylê Asè Egi Omim‘, eine ,terreiro de Candomblé‘, gebildet.

ich habe über das nachgesonnen, was Du gesagt hast: „Ohne Verzauberungsgesang funktionieren die Blätter nicht.“ Und mir ist der Gedanke gekommen, dass ohne die Geste des Ver­ reibens, ohne die Hand-Blatt-Lied-Wort-Gemische, keine Ver­ zauberung möglich wäre. Erst durch das Verflechten entsteht diese grüne Masse, dieser grüne Mantel. Das nie endende Werk, die Pfade zu öffnen und diejenigen zu kräftigen, die diese Pfade beschreiten. Alles ist zugleich subtil und konkret, ganz materiell und dennoch immateriell. Und so voller Bewegung.

In diesem Sinne habe ich heute beschlossen, Dir über ­Bispos Hände zu schreiben, die Hände von Arthur Bispo do Rosário. Er verbrachte den ganzen Tag damit, zu stricken, zu kleben, zu hämmern, zu reparieren, zu justieren, zu sammeln, zu trennen, zu holen, zu nähen, zu knüpfen, zu lösen, zu span­ nen, zu lockern, zu schieben, zu ziehen, zu öffnen und zu schlie­ ßen. Es heißt, er habe ununterbrochen gearbeitet, kaum geges­ sen und praktisch nie geschlafen. Er hatte keine Zeit zu verlieren. Er musste eine Bestandsaufnahme von ,allem‘ ­machen, was auf der Welt existiert, um sie Gott am Tag des Jüngsten Gerichts zu überbringen. In erster Linie den An­ weisungen der Jungfrau Maria folgend, führte er seine Mis­ sion ohne Unterlass aus: eine Inventur von ,allem‘, ich wieder­ hole, von ,allem‘, was auf der Welt existiert. Auf diese Weise produzierte Bispo mehr als 900 Objekte – Miniaturen, Möbel, Fensterauslagen, bestickte Kleidung und Fahnen. Der größte Teil dieses Fundus ist in der Colônia Juliano Moreira entstan­ den, einer psychiatrischen Anstalt in Rio de Janeiro, in der er rund 50 Jahre lang untergebracht war.

Bispo do Rosário reagierte auf die Schrecken der brasilia­ nischen psychiatrischen Anstalten der 1940er bis 1980er Jahre, indem er ein Archiv anlegte und so die Erinnerung bewahrte.

Das ethische Wunder, das Bispo vollbrachte, war die Ver­ wandlung des Abfalls der Anstalt in einen Schatz, der Trüm­ mer in eine Struktur, der Unterdrückung in ein Handeln, des Horrors in eine Schöpfung, der Biomacht in eine B ­ iopotenz.

Mit den Schwarzen Händen eines ehemaligen Seglers und Boxers, mit denen er schon viel Seil gespannt und viele Schläge ausgeteilt hatte, schuf er eine Welt. Eine Welt, die gleichzeitig emanzi­patorisch und schützend ist – eine Art, sein Feld zu erweitern und es zu verdichten.

Ich werde Dir kurz von einer speziellen Sammlung erzäh­ len, die Teil des Fundus ist. Es handelt sich um eine Gruppe von Objekten, die der Kurator und Kunsthistoriker Frederico de Morais als ,ORFAs‘ (Objetos Recobertos com Fio Azul) bezeichnet hat, also Objekte, die vollständig mit blauem Faden umhüllt sind. Bispo trennte die Uniformen und das Bettzeug der Anstalt auf, um an das für seine Arbeit notwendige Mate­ rial zu gelangen – daher die Dominanz der blauen Farbe. Die ,ORFAs‘ sind Miniaturen von Alltagsobjekten wie Küchen­ utensilien, Sportgeräten oder Werkzeugen. Im ,ORFA‘ -Maß­ stab hat eine Leiter die gleiche Größe wie eine Gießkanne und eine Windmühle ist etwas kleiner als ein Türschloss. Befreit

von ihrem funktionalen Zweck, von ihrem Warenstatus, ste­ hen ,ORFAs‘ exemplarisch für die Dinge, die der Mensch her­ stellt. Viele der ,ORFAs‘ tragen den Namen des Objekts in wei­ ßer Schrift auf das Objekt selbst gestickt. Die gestickten Buchstaben sind Teil des Gewebes, der Linienhaut des Gegen­ stands. Der Name eines Gegenstands ist zugleich auch der Gegenstand selbst. Zusätzlich zum Namen gibt es oft auch einen Code. Zum Beispiel: ,REGADOR 701G‘ (­GIESSKANNE 701G). Ein Vorgang des Archivismus, des Archivierens eines Archivars.

Obwohl der Titel Objeto Recoberto com Fio Azul (Mit blauem Faden bedecktes Objekt) vermuten lässt, dass ein bereits existierendes Objekt mit Fäden umhüllt wurde, besteht doch jedes der ,ORFAs‘ aus einer V ­ erquickung verschiedener Mate­ rialien (Kunststoffstücke, Metall, Draht …), die dank der Aus­ gestaltungen durch Bispos Hände die Form eines spezifischen Objekts annehmen. Nach der Fertigstellung bleibt die Geste trotz der Abwesenheit der Hand auf dem Ding erhalten – prä­ sent, seltsam präsent. Das Geflecht aus blauen Linien ist stark verdichtet, die Stiche sind eng gesetzt, aber alles hängt an einem seidenen Faden. Es ist alles wunderbar prekär. Die Heterogeni­ tät des Materials ist immer zugleich sichtbar und verborgen. Die Homogenität und der Sinn des Dings sind immer präsent und abwesend. Und sämtliche ,ORFAs‘ – als Gesamtheit und jedes für sich – strahlen eine merkwürdige blaue Leuchtkraft aus, ein Blau, das fadenscheinig ist, verlebt. Jahre später, in einem Dokumentarfilm, hörte ich Bispo sagen: „Mein körperliches Handeln ist der Glanz, den ich [auf die Dinge] lege.“ Das trifft es genau. Das ist es, was da war.

Weißt Du, Adriana, ich glaube, Bispos Dinge vibrieren und leuchten derart, weil sie frei sind von jeder ausschließenden Dichotomie – frei von der vermeintlich unüberwindbaren Trennung zwischen Leben und Tod, zwischen Ding und Spra­ che, Signifikat und Signifikant, Nutzen und Nutzlosigkeit, Heterogenität und Homogenität, Geste und Materie, Präsenz und Phantasmagorie, Mumie und Kokon. In dieser Welt, die er mit seinen Schwarzen Händen – geboren in Sergipe, im Alter von zwanzig Jahren mit paranoider Schizophrenie diagnosti­ ziert, während der Kindheit in Japaratuba in der Zubereitung von ,Reisados‘ geschult – schuf, in dieser Bispo-Welt gibt es keine Beschwichtigung oder Normalisierung durch aus­ grenzende Dichotomien. Was es aber gibt, sind Schwingungen.

Daher würde ich sagen, dass es sich bei den Dingen, die er geschaffen hat, um Samen handelt. Seltsame, leuchtend blaue Samen, die wir mit unseren Händen weiterhin aussäen können.

The first material that I’m adding to our collection, the first thing that I want to share with you are excerpts from the book The Falling Sky: Words of a Yanomami Shaman by Davi Kopenawa and Bruce Albert. All quotes come from a chapter titled Merchandise Love. It is part of the third and last section of the book. As you know, the shaman’s task is to look for bal­ ance and stop this falling from happening. It is to hold up the sky. Nothing more, nothing less.

In the course of your reading, please focus particularly on handwork in a very literal way – in the very specific way that the yanomami circulate matter and materials; this is the actual ‘manufacture’ in question. The manufacturing of a way of life that systematically refuses ‘merchandise love.’

A yanomami life that is manufactured daily and articulately by seeds and ashes and bones and leaves and hands and wings and fins and.

To receive this Kopenawa material, this forest, and let it settle down in my bones, I took some ,Rapé de Samaúma‘. It carries on vibrating: the yanomami material, Kopenawa, resting like a snake after a big meal, while I weave this text with you.

Green writing.

It was Sabá Marinho who introduced me to the huge Samaúma tree; it laid near his house in the rubber planta­ tion, fallen in the middle of the forest, opening a clearing.

While we were walking on its lying trunk, the tree still being very much alive, he pointed to the surrounding forest saying, “the cures for cancer and all other diseases are in these woods here.” Sabá was an engaged rubber tapper, a friend of Chico Mendes, with whom, alongside other colleagues, he organized the rubber tappers union in Xapuri, Acre, in the Northwest of Brazil.

I grope my way, look around, hear, feel, think of our collec­ tion of ­materials while entering the forest. Each one of them could have been chosen to be what I will share now. Ossaim is who jumps ahead. ‘Ewè ô Assá!’ The one who knows all the secrets of the leaves, the one who can also be a bird.

The second material is an ‘Ossaim’ song to “pray the leaves” (rezar as folhas). Without enchantment songs, the leaves don’t work. To add it to our collection, I asked the ‘Yá’ Wanda de Omolu to make an audio ­recording, singing.

When we burn a generous man’s bones, no matter the cause of his death, we also take special care of the bones of his hands. We consider them precious objects, for it is with his hands that he generously gave away food and goods.

Seeing the bones of his fingers after his death makes us sad and nostalgic. This is why we are very careful not to lose any piece of them during cremation. […] Then the guests invited for the ceremony sometimes consume a part of the still-warm ashes of his charred bones, taken from the bot­ tom of the mortar where they have just been ground up. […] We in Watoriki think it is dangerous to ingest fresh funerary ashes. But the Xamathari do it to acquire the image of the deceased’s breath and thus to keep the imita­ tion of his nõreme image of life.

As I said, we Yanomami do not keep the objects that we make or receive, even if it leaves us impoverished. We soon offer them to those who ask for them. So they rapidly move far away from our hands to constantly pass from one ­person to another. This is why we do not truly possess any goods of our own.

We think it is bad to own a dead man’s goods. It fills our thought with sorrow. Our real goods are the things of the forest: its waters, fish, game, trees, and fruit. Not merchan­ dise! This is why as soon as someone dies we make all the objects he kept disappear. […] We try to not let any of his traces remain. The song comes from far away. It is in Iorubá and the task of translating it is a complex one due to its multiple variations, oral transmission processes, and historical aspects. As Amora Pêra said to me, each word in this song is like a house. There­ fore, I choose not to translate it here. But I can tell you that Peregun is a leaf, known in Portuguese as ‘Pau-d’água’ (­Dracaena fragrans), which is native throughout Africa but can be easily found in Brazil. It is considered to be a very old leaf and is largely used in the rites for various ,orixás‘. Listening to this material, to this voice, I ask that you go inside the Tijuca Forest, the Atlantic Forest, replanted, immense, which still insists on standing, intertwined with the city of Rio de Janeiro.

‘Ylê Asè Egi Omim’, a ‘terreiro de Candomblé’, established itself in the middle of this forest. Notice, too, this ground where the ‘Yá’ steps while she sings the song to “pray the leaves.”

I was mulling over what you said: “Without enchantment songs, the leaves don’t work.” And I was thinking that without gestures of trituration, without the hand-leaf-song-word ­mixtures, it wouldn’t be possible to enchant. It is by braiding everything together that this green mass comes to be, this green mantle. An endless work of opening up walking paths and strengthening their walkers. Everything is very subtle and very concrete, fully material and fully immaterial. And so full of movement.

Today, with all this in mind, I decided to write to you about ­Bispo’s hands, the hands of Arthur Bispo do Rosário. He knit­ ted, glued, hammered, fixed, adjusted, gathered, separated, fetched, sewed, tied, unraveled, tightened, loosened, shoved, pulled, opened, and closed the whole day. He supposedly worked nonstop, ate very little, and almost didn’t sleep. He couldn’t lose time. He had to finish the inventory of everything that exists in the world to show it to God on Judgement Day. Mainly following Virgin Mary’s orders, those of the Virgin’s voice, he carried out his mission without respite: to make an inventory of ‘everything’, I repeat, ‘everything that exists in the world’. In this way, Bispo produced more than 900 pieces – miniatures, furniture, window displays, embroidered clothing and banners. The largest part of this inventory was manufac­ tured in Colônia Juliano Moreira, a psychiatric hospital in Rio de Janeiro where he was a patient for around 50 years.

Bispo do Rosário reacted to the horrors of Brazilian men­ tal asylums between the 1940s and 1980s by developing an archive and affirming memory. The ethic miracle that Bispo performed was the transformation of the asylum’s rubbish into treasure, ruins into construction, oppression into action, horror into creation, biopower into biopotency. He built up – with his former-sailor and former-boxer’s black hands, a hand that had already pulled a lot of rope and thrown a lot of punches – a world. A world that is at the same time emancipatory and protective – a way of expanding his field and making it thicker.

I will briefly tell you about a specific collection that is part of the inventory. It is a group of pieces that the curator and art historian Frederico de Morais named ‘ORFAs – Objeto Reco­ berto com Fio Azul’ (Objects Covered in Blue Thread), that is, objects entirely enveloped in blue lines. Bispo actually unrav­ eled the asylum’s uniforms and bedding to have the necessary material for his work – thus the prevalence of the blue color.

The ‘ORFAs’ are miniaturizations of everyday objects like kitchen utensils, sports equipment, or construction tools. On an ‘ORFA’ scale, a ladder has the same size as a watering can and a mill is slightly smaller than a door lock. Freed from their functional lives, from their commodity status, ‘ORFAs’ are prime example specimens of things that human beings create.

A lot of the ‘ORFAs’ have the object’s name embroidered in white on the object itself. The embroidered letters are part of the mesh, of the thing’s line-skin. In an ‘ORFA’, the name of a thing is also the thing. In addition to the name, a lot of times there is also a code. For example: ‘REGADOR 701G’ (WATER­ ING CAN 701G). An operation of archivism, of archiving, of an archivist.

Even though the title ‘Objeto Recoverto com Fio Azul’ (Object C ­ overed in Blue Thread) might suggest that a pre-exis­ tent object has been enveloped in pieces of thread, each ‘ORFA’ is, however, an amalgamation of different materials (pieces of plastic, metal, wire …), which, thanks to the articulations of Bispo’s hands, are endowed with the form of a specific object.

And after it is done, despite the hand being absent, the gesture remains on the thing, present, weirdly present. The mesh of blue lines is compact, the stitches are tight, but everything is hanging by a thread. It is all wonderfully precarious. The mate­ rials’ heterogeneity is always apparent and hidden. The thing’s homogeneity and sense are always present and absent. And all ‘ORFAs’ – as a whole and each one of them – emit a strange blue luminance, a blue that is threadbare, lived. Years later, in a documentary, I heard Bispo say: “My bodily action is the shine that I add [to things].” In the end, that is what it was. That is what was there.

You know, Adriana, I think that Bispo’s things vibrate and shine like they do because they are free from any exclusionary ­dichotomy – free from the impervious separation between life and death, thing and language, signified and signifier, utility and uselessness, heterogeneity and homogeneity, gesture and matter, presence and phantasmagoria, mummy and cocoon. In this world made by his black hands – which were born in Ser­ gipe, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia at twenty-some­ thing years old, trained in the preparation of ,Reisados‘ during their childhood in Japaratuba – in this Bispo-world, there isn’t any appeasement or normalization through exclusionary dichotomies. What happens is vibration. And in this way, maybe the things he made are seeds. Strange, shiny blue seeds for us to carry on planting with our hands.

In Zeiten der Covid-19-Pandemie die Welt zu begreifen, ihr einen Sinn zu verleihen, scheint genauso zu sein wie Salman Rushdies Beschreibung eines Kinobesuchs mit der Nase zu nah an der Lein­ wand. Es scheint keine kritische Distanz zu geben, um die Dinge klar zu sehen, wenn man die Situation selbst erlebt. Die erste Schwierigkeit, der Gegenwart einen Sinn zu verleihen, ist die, dass uns die Gegen­ wart nur in Pixeln erscheint, ohne dass wir die ganze Geschichte überblicken könnten.

Die zweite Schwierigkeit hängt mit den Werk­ zeugen und Methoden zusammen. Der Versuch, die Geschichte der Auseinandersetzung der Mensch­ heit mit der Pandemie zusammenzustellen, unter­ scheidet sich von der Darstellung chemischer, bio­ logischer oder physikalischer Reaktionen.

Teleskope, Mikroskope und sonstige Mess­ instrumente der Naturwissenschaften sind nicht in der Lage, die Erfahrungen, Ängste und Wünsche abzubilden, die sich in einer Pandemie abspielen.

Die dritte Schwierigkeit ist, dass die Gegenwart dynamisch bleibt. Das, was an einem Tag passiert, wird sich wahrscheinlich nicht am nächsten Tag wiederholen. Menschen und Kontexte formen und gestalten sich ständig gegenseitig neu. Keine einzelne Instanz kann in diesem Gestaltungs­ prozess als Repräsentant für den gesamten Prozess dienen. Außerdem ist es unmöglich, den gesamten Prozess zu betrachten, da er noch gar nicht abgeschlossen ist.

DAS GLOSSAR In den Gurgaon Glossaries haben die Autoren ­Gurgaon untersucht,2 eine schnell wachsende Stadt in Indien, in der verschiedene Kräfte aufeinander­ trafen. Die Stadt zog Menschen und Unternehmen aus dem ganzen Land mit ganz ­verschiedenen Lebensformen und Hintergründen an, um eine völ­ lig fremde Landschaft zu bewohnen. Die Stadt ent­ stand nicht, indem die Differenzen zwischen den Kräften aufgelöst wurden, sondern indem Wege gefunden wurden, wie diese Kräfte miteinander existieren konnten. Mit der Entstehung der Stadt entstanden neue Praktiken, Beziehungen und Begriffe. Die Gurgaon Glossaries stellten die Begriffe zusammen, mit denen die Stadt entstand.

Es waren Mikro-Narrative von entstehenden Prakti­ ken und Beziehungen. Die Trope des ‚Glossars‘ ist nützlich, um über das Zeitgenössische nachzu­ denken, bei dem die Nase gegen den Bildschirm gedrückt wird. Jeder Pixel wird zu einem Begriff im Glossar – und je mehr Begriffe das Glossar enthält, desto größer wird die Möglichkeit, zu verstehen.

Das Glossar unterscheidet sich von einem Wörterbuch, das Begriffe definiert. Die Begriffe beziehen sich hier auf einen spezifischen Kontext und tragen eine Fülle von Geschichte(n), Erfahrungen und Mythen in sich. Der Begriff ‚Projekt‘ etwa würde sonst einfach ein Vorhaben, eine Idee oder ein Ziel bedeuten. In den Gurgaon Glossaries ist der Eintrag zu ‚das Projekt‘ wie folgt beschrieben: Das Projekt: Widersprüche entstehen, wenn die Bedingungen der fehlenden zentralisierten Infrastruktur und Governance mit den Bestrebungen, Wünschen und Ängsten der ­jungen Fachkräfte kollidieren, die für die ­großen Unternehmen in Gurgaon arbeiten.

Diese Widersprüche werden durch die Idee des ‚Projekts‘ aufgelöst, das sich um sie kümmert.

Die Entwickler versprechen ein ‚Projekt‘ anstelle eines Hauses. Es wird versucht, alle Einrichtungen, die in jedem Zustand der ,­Ersten Welt‘ vorhanden sind, innerhalb dieser gated projects anzubieten. Clubs, Gärten, ­Parkplätze, Sicherheitssysteme, durchgehende Wasser- und Elektrizitätsversorgung werden vom Projekt zusammen mit einem Service­ managment auf Knopfdruck zur Verfügung gestellt – ein exklusiver Service, bei dem man einfach einen Knopf an der Gegensprechanlage drücken und nachfragen kann. Man hat Zugang zu Klempnern, Kabelfernseh­ installateuren, Elektrikern, Schädlings­ bekämpfungsdiensten usw. Einige Projekte ­bieten auch Dienstleistungen wie Kinder­ betreuung, Fahrdienste, Wäschereiservice, Essen aus verschiedenen Restaurants an. 3

Hier steht der Begriff ,Projekt‘ für die Besonder­ heiten von Governance, Werten, Praktiken, ­Systemen und dem Leben in Gurgaon. Die Menschen in Gur­ gaon verbinden den Begriff mit einer bestimmten Idee und einem bestimmten Raum und nicht mit der allgemeinen Bedeutung des Begriffs. Die Titel im Glossar mögen überaus allgemein klingen. In ihren Beschreibungen erhalten die Begriffe jedoch eine kontextuelle Spezifität, die genau über den Ort, die Zeit, die Situation spricht. Darüber hinaus ist die Form des Glossars in der Lage, mit der verpixelten Natur der Geschichte zu arbeiten, in der man sich innerhalb der Geschichte befindet und gleichzeitig ein Teil von ihr ist. Eine solche Form ist wie eine Hydra – mit mehreren Köpfen, wobei jeder Kopf mit einer anderen Stimme und einer anderen Sprache sprechen und unterschiedlich auf verschiedene Situationen reagieren kann. Alle Köpfe zusammengenommen wären in der Lage, kollektiv eine Geschichte des ­Kontextes zu erzählen.

DAS COVID-GLOSSAR Die unmittelbaren Tage nach dem ersten Lockdown in 2020 waren für alle verwirrend. Sozioöko­ nomische Aktivitäten mussten gestoppt werden.

Die einzigen Situationen, auf die man Bezug neh­ men konnte, waren kurzfristige Katastrophen wie Überschwemmungen, die eben auch sozio­ ökonomische Aktivitäten betrafen. Aber das Leben würde nach einer kurzen Phase des Umbruchs mehr oder weniger zur Normalität zurückkehren.

Genau das schien die Erwartung zu Beginn des Lockdowns zu sein. Aber die Lockdowns gingen weiter und die Erwartungen verwandelten sich in Ängste und die Ängste mutierten in den folgenden Monaten in Verzweiflung. In der Zwischenzeit erzwang der Lockdown eine Akzentuierung der verpixelten Erfahrung. Das Leben wurde auf das Zuhause beschränkt, für einige wurden die Compu­ ter- und Telefonbildschirme zu den Fenstern der Welt. Doch der Körper blieb gefangen. Die Medien blieben schlecht informiert wie der Staat, der sich selbst in einen Zustand der Verwirrung stürzte.

Die neuen Regime des ,social distancing‘ brachten eine Fülle neuer räumlicher Praktiken hervor, um den Alltag zu bewältigen. Während Praktiken wie das Arbeiten im Homeoffice, Online-Shopping, digitale Meetings explizit räumlich sind und einen Teil der sozialen Aktivitäten und der Ökonomie des Dienstleistungssektors abfedern konnten, gab es auch Praktiken verzweifelter Migrationen und Isolationen, plün­derndes Unternehmertum, emotio­ nale Zusammenbrüche, Misstrauen gegenüber öffent­lichen Räumen etc.; schiefe räumliche Dimensionen, die das gesellschaftliche Leben erheb­ lich erschüttert haben.

Wie bei der Lektüre von Salman Rushdie sehen wir in den Zeiten der Covid-19-Pandemie das Kino der Gegenwart mit der Nase auf der Leinwand.

Der beste Weg in die Zukunft scheint darin zu bestehen, Gespräche mit einer Vielzahl von Menschen zu führen und die Geschichten der einzel­ nen Pixel aller zu teilen. Aus solchen Gesprächen können größere Narrative und Muster entstehen, die ein Gefühl für die Zeit vermitteln. Die Form des Glossars scheint die Fähigkeit in sich zu tragen, solche Gespräche führen zu können.

In diesen Gesprächen kann es viele Stimmen, viele Sprachen, viele Sichtweisen und viele Orte geben. Während eine solche Konstellation von Geschichten das Potenzial bergen könnte, eine Meta­ erzählung zu produzieren, besteht doch immer die Möglichkeit, dass eine neue Geschichte ein solches Narrativ bricht und ein anderes erzwingt.

Das Glossar wäre in der Lage, nicht nur die Besonderheiten der Rekonfigurationen festzuhalten, die in der menschlichen Welt stattfinden, sondern auch ihre Ausarbeitung. Es wäre aus den dichten Erfahrungen von Individuen, die die Pandemie durchleben, hergestellt.

An der School of Environment and Architec­ ture (SEA) haben wir begonnen, Geschichten von ­veränderten und neu aufgetauchten Werten, Konzepten und Praktiken zu sammeln, die ent­ standen sind, als der Virus die Menschheit in ­unangenehme Richtungen drängte.

Diese Sammlung von Geschichten heißt Covid Glossary (covidglossary.net). Zusammengestellt von zweihundert Menschen der SEA im Laufe des letzten Jahres, hält dieses Glossar die Fragilitäten, die Agilitäten, den Widerstand und andere Dinge fest, die uns als menschliche Wesen charakterisieren.

Diese zweihundert Menschen kommen größtenteils aus Mumbai, aber auch aus seiner Metropolregion, dem Bundesstaat Maharashtra und vielen weiteren Metropolen und Städten in ganz Indien. Die Zusammenstellung der Geschichten umfasst solche von Unternehmungslust, Einfallsreichtum, Aus­ grenzung, Verlust, Glücksspiel, Not, Misstrauen, Verrat, Schwarzmarkthandel, Aufruhr, Verwirrung, Organisation, die die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Virus geprägt haben. Das Glossar wird viele Erzählungen und Gegenerzählungen über die Pandemie hervorbringen und möglicherweise Spekulationen über die Wege ermöglichen, die die Menschheit einschlagen wird.

THE DIFFICULTIES OF MAKING SENSE Saleem Sinai, the protagonist of Salman Rushdie’s novel Midnight’s Children, uses the metaphor of being in a cinema to explain the difficulty of making sense of the present: Reality is a question of perspective; the further you get from the past, the more concrete and plausible it seems – but as you approach the present, it inevitably seems more and more incredible. Suppose yourself in a large cinema, sitting at first in the back row, and gradually moving up, row by row, until your nose is almost pressed against the screen. Gradually the stars’ faces dissolve into dancing grain; tiny details assume grotesque proportions; the ­illusion ­dissolves – or rather, it becomes clear that the illusion itself is reality […] (When) we’re too close to the cinema-screen, the picture … [breaks] … up into dots, only ­subjective judg­ ments are possible. 1

Figuring out the world and making sense of it during these times – the times of the Covid-19 pan­ demic – seems to be exactly like Salman Rushdie’s description of sitting in a cinema with our nose touching the screen. There appears to be no critical distance to see things and make sense of them when one is living through the situation. This is the first difficulty of making sense of the present, where the present appears to us in pixels without a sense of the whole story. The second difficulty is related to tools and methods. Trying to put together the story of humanity’s engagement with the pandemic is different from putting together an account of chemical, biological or physical reactions. The tele­ scopes, microscopes and various measuring instru­ ments of natural and physical sciences are unable to handle the realm of the experiences, anxieties and desires that are played out in a pandemic. The third difficulty is that the present remains dynamic.

The actions that happen on one day may not be repeated on the next. Humans and contexts con­ stantly shape and reshape each other. Any one instance in this process of ­shaping cannot serve as representative of the whole ­process. Moreover, it is impossible to look at the whole process since it has not even happened yet.

THE GLOSSARY In the work Gurgaon Glossaries 2 the authors ­undertook a study of Gurgaon, a city that grew ­rapidly with diverse forces coming together. The city attracted people and businesses from all over the country with different kinds of lives and back­ grounds to inhabit a completely alien landscape.

The city settled not by resolving the differences between forces, but by figuring out ways in which these forces could co-exist. It generated new prac­ tices and relationships that became terms describing how the city happened. Gurgaon Glossaries is a ­compilation of the terms which brought the city together. They are micro-narratives of emerging practices and relationships. The trope of the ‘glos­ sary’ is useful for thinking about the present moment, where the nose is pressed against the screen. Every pixel becomes a term in the glossary – and the more terms there are in the glossary, the greater the possibility of making sense. The glossary is unlike a dictionary, which defines terms. The terms in the glossary are specific to a context and carry a thickness of histories, experiences and myths with them. In a dictionary, for example, a term like ‘project’ would simply be defined as an undertaking or an idea or an ambition. In Gurgaon Glossaries, one of the terms – ‘the Project’ – reads as follows: ‘The Project’: Contradictions arise when the lack of centralized infrastructure and gover­ nance collides with the aspirations, desires and fears of the young professionals who come to work for the big companies located in ­Gurgaon. These contradictions are resolved through the idea of the ‘project’ taking care of people. Developers promise a ‘project’ instead of a house. Efforts are made to provide all the facilities that are available in a first-world envi­ ronment, within these gated projects. Clubs, gardens, parking, security systems, 24 / 7 water and electricity are provided by ‘the project’, along with one-button services – an exclusive service where all you have to do is push a ­button on the intercom system and say what you want. You have access to plumbers, cable TV guys, electricians, pest control services, etc. Some projects also provide services like ­day-care, drivers for hire, laundry, and food from different restaurants. 3

Here, the term ‘project’ embodies the specificities of governance, values, practices, systems and living in Gurgaon. The people of Gurgaon associate the term with a specific idea and space and not with the general understanding of the term. The titles in the glossary may sound extremely generic. It is in their descriptions, however, that the terms acquire a contextual specificity which says something about the place / time / situation. Moreover, the form of the glossary is able to work with the pixelated nature of the story, where one is inside the story and also a part of it. Such a form is like a hydra – with multiple heads, each of which can speak in a differ­ ent voice and a different language, and respond differently to different situations. All the heads put together can collectively tell the story of the context.

THE COVID GLOSSARY The immediate days after the lockdown were con­ fusing for everyone. Social and economic activity had to be stopped. The only comparable situations in living memory were short-term disasters like floods, which also affected social and economic activity. But in the wake of those other disasters, life more or less returned to normal after brief peri­ ods of upheaval. This seemed to be exactly what people expected at the beginning of the lockdown.

But the lockdowns continued, and the expectations turned into anxieties and the anxieties turned into desperation as the months went by. Meanwhile, the lockdown forced an accentuation of the pixelated experience. Lives were lived from within the house, where, for some, computer and phone screens became ­windows to the world. The body, however, remained imprisoned. The media remained as illinformed as the state, which was descending into confusion. The new regimes of social distancing produced a plethora of new spatial practices for negotiating everyday life. While practices like work­ ing from home, online shopping, digital meetings, remote services, etc. are explicitly spatial and have been able to cushion some of the social activities and service sector economies, there have also been practices of desperate migrations, distressing ­isolations, ­scavenging entrepreneurship, emotional breakdowns, suspicion of public spaces, etc., where oblique spatial dimensions have significantly shaken social life.

Like Salman Rushdie’s reading, the era of the Covid-19 pandemic finds us watching the cinema of the present with our noses to its screen. The best way ahead, then, seems to be in having conversa­ tions with a multitude of people and sharing the stories of everyone’s pixels. Larger narratives and patterns may emerge from such conversations and provide a sense of the time we are living through.

The form of the glossary seems to have the capacity to hold such conversations. In this conversation, there may be many voices, many languages, many points of view, and many locations. While a constel­ lation of such stories would have the potential to produce a meta-narrative, there is always a possibil­ ity that a new story would force itself into breaking such a narrative and making a new one. The glos­ sary would be able to not only hold the specificities of the reconfigurations that are taking place in the human world, but also their working-out. It would be made from the thick experiences of individuals living through the pandemic.

At the School of Environment and Architecture (SEA), we started collecting stories of altered and newly emerged values, concepts and practices that were produced as the virus pushed humanity in awkward directions. This compilation is called Covid Glossary (covidglossary.net). Put together by 200 people from SEA over the past year, this glos­ sary records the fragilities, the agilities, the resis­ tance and other things that characterize us as human beings. These 200 people are mainly from Mumbai, but also its metropolitan region, the state of Maharashtra and many metropolises and second towns across India. The compilation includes sto­ ries of enterprise, ingenuity, exclusion, loss, gam­ ble-taking, distress, mistrust, betrayal, black-mar­ keteering, commotion, confusion, organization, etc., that have shaped the landscape of our engagement with the virus. The glossary will create many narra­ tives and counter-­narratives about the pandemic, and possibly enable speculations on the trajectories that humanity will take.

Sarah fährt in Santa Cruz für Lyft, einen Fahr­ dienstanbieter. Der ,stat meter‘ von Lyft bestimmt ihren Arbeitstag. Wie ein Head-up-Display (HUD) in einem Ego-Shooter-Spiel zeigt es ständig an, wie hoch ihre Akzeptanzbewertung ist, wie viele Fahrten sie absolviert hat und wie weit es noch bis zum Erreichen ihres Ziels ist. Gelegentlich schickt Lyft ihr eine Challenge: Absolvieren Sie eine gewisse Anzahl von Fahrten innerhalb einer bestimmten Zeit, um sich für einen Bonus zu qualifizieren. Ein­ mal pro Woche erhält sie eine Weekly Feedback Summary – eine Zusammenfassung von personali­ sierten Fahrgastkommentaren und einer neu berechneten Fahrer*innenbewertung, die ihre Arbeit in Form eines Balkendiagramms mit früheren ­Leistungen vergleicht.

Die Art und Weise, wie Sarahs Arbeit ver­ bunden, erzählt und vermittelt wird, ist als Gamification bekannt, definiert als die Gestaltung von Nicht-Spiel-Kontexten, die wie Spiele erscheinen sollen. Im besten Fall ist es ein düsterer, zynischer und manipulativer Ansatz zur Steigerung der Produktivität. Im schlimmsten Fall – obwohl das Ende des Spektrums derzeit fast unendlich zu sein scheint – ist es der Versuch einer totalen Kontrolle darüber, wie sich Konsumbürger*innen verhalten. Eine Gouvernementalität, die anstatt auf Disziplin und Bestrafung jetzt auf Abzeichen, Punkte und Auszeichnungen setzt.1 Die Lektüre der Literatur über Gamification ist wie ein Blick in ein Black Mirror-Drehbuch: eine Vision von hilflosen Individuen, die einem allmächtigen und voll ­vernetzten Plattform-Kapitalismus schutzlos ­ausgeliefert sind.

Es ist natürlich wie immer komplizierter als das.

Und vielleicht ist die Realität sogar noch trostloser als die Fiktionen von Black Mirror. Wenn man genau hinschaut, wird klar, dass die Individuen

nicht immer zur Teilnahme an gamifizierten Systemen gezwungen werden. Häufig sind wir sogar willige Teilnehmer*innen. Denn bei der Gamification geht es nicht wirklich um Spiele, sondern um das Spielen. Das verleitet uns unweigerlich, gegen uns selbst und zum Nutzen eines anderen zu spielen.

Während der Begriff der Gamification schon im späten 20. Jahrhunderts Spuren hinterlassen hat, entstand seine aktuelle Verwendung in der Marketingbranche der frühen 2010er Jahre.2 Oft zitierte Pioniere des Genres sind Kund*innen­ bindungsprogramme, die verschiedene Stufen (Silber, Gold, Platin), Sterne und Abzeichen ver­ wendeten, um die Konsumgeschichte des Einzelnen auf einer Kundenkarte festzuhalten. Im Kern ist Gamification eine Methode und Technik, die Elemente des ­Spieldesigns nutzt, um das Verhalten der Konsument*innen zu verändern.

Gamification als Strategie oder gar Ideologie, die sich um die Veränderung des Verhaltens von Menschen dreht, entwickelte sich jedoch schnell über die Grenzen des Marketings hinaus. Wenn wir uns die seman­tischen Geschwister der Gamification ansehen, können wir ihre Bestrebungen klarer erkennen; Playbor (eine Wortneuschöpfung aus Play und Labor, Spiel und Arbeit), behavioural games, productivity games, playful design und Funware stecken eindeutig das Territorium von Produktivität, Verhalten, Arbeit und Software ab.3 So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass Gamification in der zeit­ genössischen Gig-Economy gut etabliert ist; digitale Schnittstellen und Spielstrukturen werden bei ­Fahrdiensten (Lyft, Uber), Lieferungen (Amazon), das Packen und Lagern (Amazon) sowie beim Kund*innen-Checkout (Target) eingesetzt, um nur einige zu nennen. Die Idee, dass Arbeiter*innen produktiver werden können, wenn ihre Umgebung wie ein Spiel strukturiert ist, ist nicht neu; der

Paradigmenwechsel entsteht mit der Datafizierung dieses Prozesses. Denn die digitale Arbeit ermöglicht nicht nur eine totale Arbeitsplatzüberwachung, die die Fabrikhalle nie bieten könnte; alle von einer*einem Arbeiter*in generierten Daten können gesammelt, gespeichert und geerntet werden. Die Verteilung von Belohnungen und Strafen für die Arbeiter*innen wird an algorithmische Analysen delegiert, Entscheidungen, die die Arbeitenden und vielleicht auch die*der Arbeitgeber*in oft weder verstehen noch entschlüsseln können.

Doch Gamification ist keineswegs auf die Produktivitätssteigerung des Plattformkapitalismus beschränkt. Sie durchdringt unsere digitalen Existenzen: die undurchsichtige Wettbewerbslogik von Social Media (Freunde, Likes, Posts, Gruppen), das Spielautomaten-Design von ‚Pull to Refresh‘ auf zahlreichen Apps (Nachrichten-, E-Mail-, Reise-Apps, Podcast-Aggregatoren) oder auch die explizite Gamification einer Vielzahl von Apps (von Sprachlern-Apps über Diät-Apps bis hin zum Sport). Darin liegt der Knackpunkt: Gamification ist nicht irgendwie in den digitalen Bereich ein­ gesickert, hat ihn nicht plötzlich infiziert, sondern sie ist symptomatisch und vielleicht sogar typisch für unser vernetztes Leben.

Wir sind also keine Marionetten, die dem Genie der Gamification-Gurus machtlos ausgeliefert sind, sondern Handelnde, die vielleicht sogar aktiv an der Koproduktion eines spielerischen Netzwerks beteiligt sind? Ja und nein. Gamification ist tief in die digitale Ordnung eingebettet, da sie mit Vor­ stellungen von Spiel verwoben ist. Der Art und Weise, wie ein Pilz zwischen Baumwurzeln wächst, um ein mykorrhizisches Netzwerk zu erschaffen, nicht unähnlich, baut Gamification auf den Ideen des Spiels auf, die in das Internet eingebettet sind.

Der sogenannte ‚ludic turn‘, die Ludifizierung der Kultur und der Kreativwirtschaft, entstand in einer Epoche des vernetzten digitalen Selbst.4 Es ist das Netz der neunziger Jahre, der Raum der Vor­ stellungskraft, in dem wir anfingen, Fantasien online auszuleben, die Grenzen dessen, was wir glaubten zu sein, zu verbiegen, herumzualbern und manchmal sogar Geld damit zu verdienen.

Gamification spielt mit dieser Vergangenheit, führt uns an der Nase herum und wir spielen (täuschen) uns schließlich selbst etwas vor.

Langsam verwandelte sich dieser offene Raum des Experimentierens und Erforschens in Kommerz und Eroberung. Das ludifizierte Internet wurde zu einem gamifizierten Internet geformt.5 Gamification ist in der Tat die spiegelbildliche Abbildung des Spiels, ähnlich und doch diametral entgegengesetzt.

Das Spiel ist durch Freiheit, Handlungsfähigkeit, Spontaneität, Zusammenarbeit gekennzeichnet und wird in seiner reinsten Form als die Essenz des Menschseins gesehen.6 Gamification bringt geschlossene Welten, Kontrolle, determinierte Ergebnisse, Atomisierung und Entmenschlichung mit sich. Doch ohne das Spiel wäre Gamification unmöglich. Was irgendwie

ironisch ist, wenn man innehält und spekuliert, wie das Endspiel der Gamification aussehen könnte (Spoiler – es macht nicht viel Spaß).

Gamification basiert auf einer ererbten Idee von digitalem und internetbasiertem Spiel. Aber sie ist vollständig auf Datenströme und Algorithmen angewiesen. Wie die meisten von Big Data getriebenen Ideologien ist sie daher eher von Korrelation als von Kausalität geprägt.7 So gesehen ist Gamification mit seinem großen Bruder, der datengetriebenen Ideologie der Choice-Architecture, verwandt. Choice-Architekten gehen davon aus, dass alle Umgebungen gestaltet werden können und dieses Design wiederum die Art und Weise beein­ flusst, wie Individuen mit diesen interagieren.

Daher könnten Choice-Architekten Individuen auch dazu bringen, anstatt die ‚falsche‘ die ‚richtige‘ ­Entscheidung zu treffen. Zusammen betrachtet schlagen Choice-Architecture und Gamification eine ­dystopische nahe Zukunft vor, eine vollständig gestaltete Umgebung, die alle Lebensbereiche umfasst, online und offline, öffentlich und privat, bei der Arbeit und in der Freizeit. Eine Umgebung, die auf dem Primat der Wahl beruht, die aber Zugang zu so detaillierten psychografischen Profilen aller Konsumbürger*innen hat, dass sie jede mög­ liche Zukunft modellieren und die Umgebung so gestalten kann, dass nur eine bestimmte Wahl getroffen wird. Und sie vermittelt gleichzeitig die Illusion, dass wir alle das Spiel gespielt und gewonnen haben. Willkommen im libertären Paternalismus.8 Man könnte annehmen, dass in der Gamification genauso viel Spiel steckt wie in der Choice-Architecture. Und in der Tat ähneln sich diese Ideologien auf merkwürdige Weise. Anstatt die Absicht zu erforschen, versuchen sie, die Wirkung zu verändern. Anstatt den Versuch zu unternehmen, die Einstellung zu verstehen, versuchen sie, das ­Verhalten zu regulieren. Beide Systeme sind zutiefst überwachend, gleichzeitig jedoch irgendwie blind.

Dieser Schimmer von Fehlbarkeit, dieser Sprung in der Schüssel hinterlässt bei mir einen Hauch von Hoffnung. Das Gefühl, dass diese extrem anspruchsvollen stochastischen Modelle auch konzeptionell einfach und primitiv sind. Es lässt mich an einen kolossalen Zyklopen denken, ein omnipotentes Wesen, das nur eine Sichtweise auf die Welt hat. Gamification ist ein perfektes Beispiel dafür, wie das Silicon Valley einen ideologischen Apparat aus Wahlmöglichkeiten, Entscheidungs­ findungen, Produktivität und Spaß in unser Leben geschmuggelt hat. Doch gleichzeitig entlarvt sie dabei unbeholfen diese Mantras und Dogmen als hauchdünn und eindimensional.

Sarah drives for Lyft, a hail and ride application in and around Santa Cruz, CA. The Lyft stat meter governs her working day. Like a head-up display (HUD) in a first-person shooter game, it constantly displays what her acceptance rating is, how many rides she has completed and how far until she ­completes her goal. Occasionally Lyft sends her a challenge: complete a certain number of rides within a certain time in order to qualify for a bonus.

A Weekly Feedback Summary arrives once a week – a summary of personalized passenger comments and a newly-calculated driver rating, which ranks her against former performance in the form of a bar chart.

The manner in which Sarah’s work is inter­ faced, narrated, and mediated is known as gamifica­ tion, defined as designing non-game contexts to appear like games. At best, it is a bleak, cynical and manipulative approach to increasing productivity.

At worst (although currently that end of the spec­ trum seems to be almost infinite) it is the attempt at total control of how consumer-citizens behave, a governmentality which has switched discipline and punishment for badges, points and awards.1 Reading through the literature on gamification is like peeking into a Black Mirror script; a vision of helpless indi­ viduals defenseless in the face of an omnipotent and fully-networked platform capitalism.

It is of course more complicated than this.

And perhaps the reality is even more desolate than the fictions of Black Mirror. If you look closely, it appears that individuals are not always being coerced into participating in gamified systems. More often than not we are willing participants. Because whilst gamification is not really about games, it is

about play. This invariably draws us in, to play against ourselves, for someone else’s benefit.

Whilst there are some traces of the term ­gamification in the late 20th century, its current usage emerged in the marketing industry in the early 2010s.2 An oft-quoted pioneer of the genre are ­consumer loyalty programs, which use different ­levels (silver, gold, platinum), stars, badges, etc., to manifest the consumption history of the individual in the form of their loyalty card. At its root, gami­ fication is a method and technique of using game design elements to change consumers’ behavior.

Gamification as a strategy (or indeed an ideol­ ogy) relating to the changing of people’s behavior quickly migrated beyond marketing. If we look at gamification’s semantic siblings we can see its ­aspirations more clearly; playbor (a neologism made up of play and labor), behavioral games, ­productivity games, playful design and funware clearly stake out the territory of productivity, behav­ ior, labor and software.3 So it comes as no surprise that gamifi­cation is well established within the ­contemporary gig economy; digital interfaces and game structures are employed for driving services (Lyft, Uber), delivery (Amazon), warehouse ­ packing (Amazon) and customer checkout (Target), to name but a few.

The idea that workers can become more ­productive if their environment is structured like a game is not new; the paradigm shift comes with the datafication of that process. Because not only does digital labor offer a total job surveillance that the factory floor could never provide, but all the data generated by a worker can also be gathered, stored and harvested. The distribution of workers’

rewards and penalties is outsourced to algorithmic analysis, producing decisions which often the worker, and sometimes the employer, can neither understand nor decipher.

Yet gamification is by no means limited to increasing the productivity of platform capitalism.

It permeates our digital existences. The opaque competitive logic of social media (friends, likes, posts, groups), the slot machine design of ‘pull to refresh’ on multiple apps (news, email, travel apps, podcast aggregators), or indeed the explicit gamifi­ cation of a multitude of apps from language-learn­ ing to dieting and exercise apps. Therein lies the nub. It is not that gamification has somehow seeped into or infected the digital domain, but rather that it is symptomatic of, and maybe even typifies, our networked lives.

So is it in fact the case that we are not puppets who are powerless to resist the genius of gamifica­ tion gurus, but agents who are perhaps even active in the co-production of a playful network? Well, yes and no. Gamification is deeply embedded in the ­digital order, in that it is intertwined with notions of play. Not unlike the way a fungus grows between tree roots to create a mycorrhizal network, gamifica­ tion builds on ideas of play which are embedded within the Internet. The so-called ‘ludic turn’ – the ludification of culture and the creative economy – emerged in an epoch of networked digital selves.4 The Net of the nineties was a space of imagination where we started playing out fantasies online, bend­ ing the boundaries of who we thought we were, messing about and sometimes even making money from it.

Gamification plays off this past, plays us for fools, and we end up playing (fooling) ourselves.

Slowly, this open space of experimentation and exploration was transformed into commerce and conquest. The ludified Internet was shaped into the gamified Internet.5 Gamification is in fact the mirror image of play, so similar yet diametrically opposed. Play is typified by freedom, agency, spon­ taneity, working together, and at its most pure is seen as the essence of being human.6 Gamification entails closed worlds, control, determined outcomes, atomization and dehumanization. Yet without play, gamification would be impossible. Which is kind of ironic if you pause to speculate what the endgame of gamification might be. (Spoiler – it’s not much fun).

Gamification draws on, and owes its existence to, an inherited idea of digitally-afforded and Inter­ net-based play. But it is fully reliant on data streams and algorithms. Like most big data-driven ideolo­ gies, it is thus shaped by correlation rather than ­causality.7 Seen in this light, gamification is akin to another, related, data-driven ideology: that of choice architecture. Choice architects hold that all environments can be designed, and this design in turn shapes how individuals interact with them.

Hence choice architects might as well nudge indi­ viduals to make the ‘right’ decision rather than the

‘wrong’ one. Seen together, choice architecture and gamification propose a dystopian near-future, a fully designed environment which encompasses all spheres of life, online and offline, public and ­private, work and leisure. An environment which is premised on the primacy of choice, but which has access to such detailed psychographic profiles of all consumer-citizens that it can model every possible future and tailor the environment to ensure that only one particular choice will be made. Whilst at the same time giving the illusion that we have all played the game and won. Welcome to Libertarian Paternalism.8 It would seem that there is as much game-­ playing in gamification as there is choice in choice ­architecture. And in fact, these ideologies echo one another in curious ways. Rather than inquire into intention, they try to change the effect. Instead of trying to understand attitude, they try to regulate behavior. Both systems are deeply surveillant yet at the same time somewhat blind.

This glimmer of fallibility, this chink in the armor, leaves me with a certain sense of hope. The sense that these extremely sophisticated stochastic models are also conceptually basic and primitive.

It makes me think of a colossal cyclops, an omni­ potent being that only has one way of seeing the world. Gamification is a perfect example of how Silicon Valley has smuggled an ideological appara­ tus of choice, decision-making, productivity and fun into our lives. But in doing this quite so clumsily, it has revealed these mantras and dogmas to be wafer-thin and one-dimensional.

Chantal Akerman arbeitete im autobiografischen Register, ob sie an einem Spielfilm oder an einer Dokumentation saß, darüber sind sich die meisten, wenn nicht gar alle, die über sie schreiben, einig.

Das heißt aber nicht, dass ihre Arbeit solipsistisch ist und sie den Ereignissen ihres Lebens gegenüber treu blieb. Sie nutzte sich selbst als Start- und End­ punkt für die filmische Auseinandersetzung mit der Welt. Wo aber ihre eigene Selbstkonstruktion begann oder endete, war eine weniger gesicherte Angelegenheit. Sie beschäftigte sich in ihrem Œuvre immer wieder und an Besessenheit grenzend mit einer Reihe von Tropen (Grenzen, Exil, Dauer, ­Warten, Vergänglichkeit, Jüdischsein, Heimat), aber vor allem mit der Mutter.

Die Mutter ist in Akermans Filmen mehr als eine Figur und sogar mehr als eine Trope; sie ist das Zentrum der Identifikation, gleichzeitig abjekt und begehrt, sodass sie die Unterscheidung zwischen dem Selbst und dem Anderen unterläuft. Das war ein gut eingeführtes Themenfeld der zweiten Welle der Frauenbewegung (Nancy Fridays Bestseller Wie meine Mutter erschien 1977), aber Akerman verpasste ihm wie immer einen neuen und unerwarteten Dreh. In diesem kurzen Artikel bespreche ich Chantal Akermans Brief-Film News from Home (auf Deutsch: Briefe von zu Haus), der die Fort-Da-Beziehung zwischen Mutter und Tochter auf eindrucksvolle Weise inszeniert.

News from Home (1976) ist Chantal Akermans zehnter Film, sie hat ihn zwischen ihren beiden bekanntesten Filmen aus den 1970er Jahren, Jeanne Dielman (1975) und Les Rendez-Vous d’Anna (1978), gemacht. Das ist auch deshalb erwähnens­ wert, weil ihr Publikum so schon eine Version der Mutter kannte, die in diesem Film eine prominente Rolle spielt, ihr also bereits im vorherigen Film begegnet war und im nächsten Film etwas über die Lebensumstände der filmemachenden Tochter erfahren würde.

Allerdings ist News from Home auch ein Bruch, eine Verschnaufpause. Eine Rückkehr zu Akermans früherer, einfacherer, strukturalistischer Arbeits­ weise – vor dem Druck des Ruhms (der für sie ­extrem früh kam), als das Experimentieren keine ­Konsequenzen hatte und sie einfach ihren Instink­ ten folgen konnte. Sie hatte vorher schon ein paar Filme in New York gedreht. Besonders erwähnens­ wert ist Hotel Monterey (1972), der in einer billigen Absteige, in der Akerman selbst ab und an unter­ kam, gedreht wurde.

News from Home und Hotel Monterey nutzen die gleichen formalen Mittel: lange beobachtende Einstellungen, oft aus respektvollem Abstand, aber immer mit Akermans charakteristischem durch­ dringenden Blick. In beiden Filmen verstärken bewegliche Räume (ein Fahrstuhl in Hotel Monterey, eine U-Bahn, ein Auto und eine Fähre in News from Home) die Bewegungen der Kamera. Beide Filme sind vernarrt in New York, eine Stadt, in die Akerman immer wieder zurückkehrte und wo sie der Legende nach die avantgardistischen Filme von Jonas Mekas und Michael Snow kennenlernte.

Während Paris die Stadt ihrer fiktionalen Filme wurde, war New York der Ort für das experimen­ telle, nicht-narrative Filmemachen – zumindest in den 1970er Jahren.

Akerman war mit 20 Jahren (1971) das erste Mal in New York; nachdem sie Brüssel fluchtartig verlassen hatte, schwor sie sich bereits bei der Ankunft, den Kontakt zu halten. In ihren eigenen Worten: Als ich dort ankam, machte ich mir klar, dass ich ihnen viel schreiben müsste, um sie auf dem Laufenden zu halten und die Verbindung ­aufrechtzuerhalten. Für die Generation meiner Eltern ist New York eine Art Mythos, ein Traum. Für mich passte das, was ich täglich sah, Soho, die U-Bahn, die Einsamkeit, nicht

zu diesem Mythos, der schon verrottete. Gleich­ zeitig habe ich dort eine außergewöhnliche Erfahrung gemacht: Menschen zu sehen, die so undefiniert wie ich selbst waren, das tat mir sehr gut. Sie schienen nirgendwo hinzugehen, und auch ich wusste nicht, wohin ich gehen sollte. Zu Hause, in meinem familiären Umfeld in Brüssel standen die Leute um sieben Uhr auf, sie gingen zur Arbeit, sie waren definiert. Im Gegensatz zu ihnen ließ ich mich immer treiben.

Bei ihrem ersten Besuch, Akerman blieb sieben Monate in New York, erhielt sie eine Flut von Brie­ fen von ihrer Mutter, und als sie nach einem Kurz­ aufenthalt in Belgien drei Monate später wieder nach New York zurückkehrte, wusste sie, dass sie einen Film machen würde. Akerman sagte: „Ich war im Flugzeug und dachte, meine Mutter wird mir diese Briefe noch einmal schicken […] So bin ich auf die Idee für den Film gekommen.“ Obwohl sie die Idee für den Film bereits 1971 hatte und von Oktober 1971 bis März 1973 mehr oder weniger ununterbrochen in New York lebte, drehte sie das Filmmaterial zu diesen Briefen erst 1976, nachdem sie, wie schon erwähnt, ihren von der Kritik hochgelobten Spielfilm Jeanne Dielman abgedreht hatte, mit Delphine Seyrig, der französischen Nou­ velle-Vague-Sensation in der Hauptrolle und damit deutlich unerwartet besetzt. Seyrig spielt eine klein­ bürgerliche belgische Hausfrau, deren Tagesablauf mehr oder weniger lose auf auf denen der eigenen Mutter und einer Tante basiert. Akerman war 25 Jahre alt, als sie Jeanne Dielman drehte, der schon damals als Meisterwerk galt. Jeanne Dielman war Akermans zweiter Spielfilm, nachdem sie im Jahr zuvor, 1974, Je, Tu, Il, Elle gedreht hatte. Über die Umsetzung von News from Home sagte Akerman: Ich hatte eine Art Plan, ich kannte die Orte sehr gut, an denen ich drehen wollte; ich wusste, wie er beginnen und wie er enden würde. Es sollte sich um die Sequenzen in der U-Bahn drehen: oben, unten, aber nichts Systematisches.

Ich wusste, wie sich der Sound selbst organisie­ ren würde, mit erst ruhigen Momenten und dann heftigeren. Alles läuft über Brüche, visu­ elle Rhythmen, Linien.

New York ist in diesem Film gleichzeitig leer gefegt und überlaufen, es ist geschäftig und ruhig, kako­ fonisch und wenn nicht still, dann gedämpft. Und in einer spielerischen, ebenso gegenläufigen Span­ nung ist die Mutter an- und abwesend, schwer abzu­ schütteln und trotzdem nie wirklich da. Die Nähe und Intimität, die die Worte „Meine geliebte Tochter“ hervorrufen, werden von den nagenden Schuld­ gefühlen gemildert, die aus jedem Brief strömen.

Die Distanz zwischen den Worten und den Bildern ist eine Art Erleichterung, eine andere Art von Atem­ pause, vom endlosen Ziehen und Zerren der Mutter.

Doch anstatt ihr aufregendes Leben als Filme­ macherin zu zeigen – auch im Gegensatz zu den oft

tristen Briefen ihrer Mutter – stellt Akerman ihren entfremdeten, distanzierten Blick auf ihre Wahl­ heimat dar. Sie hat sicherlich ein Gespür für die Stadt, aber sie bleibt immer distanziert, ihr Blick geht gewissermaßen von außen nach innen. Wie Kenneth White sagt: „Akerman ist keine New Yorkerin. News from Home ist das Produkt eines Individuums, das sich nicht mit seiner Umgebung anfreunden kann.“ Es geht aber nicht einzig und allein um Ent­ fremdung – in diesem Film steckt viel Liebe. In ers­ ter Linie die Liebe der Mutter, die immer wieder zum Ausdruck kommt, wenn sie jeden Brief mit „Deine Dich liebende Mutter“ unterschreibt. Und da ist die Liebe zu New York: sowohl ober- als auch unter­ irdisch. Es drückt sich eine Zuneigung für dessen Verfall und die Dysfunktion aus, für seine leeren Grundstücke und Schlaglöcher, für die Graffitis auf den Zügen und die müden Pendler*innen, die etwas misstrauisch sind, sich aber damit abfinden, dass sie von ihrem festen Blick erfasst werden. Da ist ebenso eine enorme Liebe der Tochter für die Mutter, auch wenn das Vorlesen dieser privaten Briefe, die nicht für ein Publikum bestimmt waren, ein Hauch von Grausamkeit umweht.

Der Film wurde nicht zuletzt von Akerman selbst als etwas unfreundlich gegenüber der Mutter interpretiert. Als würde er die einfältigen Worte der Mutter mit dem dynamischen Kosmopolitismus der filmemachenden Tochter in der Metropole kontras­ tieren. Aber wenn man genauer darüber nachdenkt, ist dies ein Weg, Nähe zur Mutter aufzubauen. Viel­ leicht sogar, um die Einfachheit in einem anderen Register zu reproduzieren. Schließlich ist das Bild der Stadt, das Akerman zeigt, nicht das der erwart­ baren strahlenden Großstadt, sondern schlicht eine Version einer alltäglichen Stadt, voll mit durch­ schnittlichen Menschen und unauffälligen Straßen.

Die Autos sind ramponiert, die Straßen von Schlag­ löchern gespickt, die Gesichter mit der Aussicht auf einen weiteren Tag, der dem vorherigen ebenso wie dem kommenden gleicht, düster.

Als wäre Akerman so weit wie möglich gereist, nur um die Alltäglichkeiten wiederzufinden, die sie zurückgelassen hat. Und die Mutter begleitet die Tochter unbewusst, hält sie aus der Ferne fest.

Als gäbe es in den leeren Blicken New Yorks, unfähig mit irgendjemandem oder irgendetwas eine tiefe Verbindung einzugehen, immer noch den Anker der Mutter, deren einfache und sich wieder­ holende ­Refrains sie beruhigen, sie ihr ein Stückchen näherbringen und ihr so erlauben, an zwei Orten gleichzeitig zu sein und so das Fremde im Vertrauten und das Vertraute im Fremden ertragen zu können. Übertönt von den Geräuschen der Stadt, muss sich das Publikum manchmal bemühen, um die Worte der Mutter ,überhaupt‘ hören zu können.

Die von der Tochter adoptierte Stadt droht die Worte der Mutter zu verschlingen, verzehrt ihre ­Einfachheit und Geradlinigkeit. Adriana Cerne hat dafür die schönen Worte gefunden, dass „die Stimme manchmal wie weggewischt wirkt – als ob sie schreiben würde.“

Sie beschwört das Bild von Worten auf einer Seite herauf, die ausradiert wurden, wobei das Übertönen noch etwas anderes ist: ein Kampf, ein Ringen, eine Anstrengung, die gemacht werden muss. Wir hören nicht einfach auf zu versuchen, sie zu verstehen, tatsächlich versuchen wir es noch mehr. Und zwar nicht so, wie ein Spion versuchen würde, ausradierte Bleistiftstriche zu entziffern, sondern eher so, als ob wir versuchen würden, dem treu zu bleiben, was wir zu hören berechtigt sind.

Wir sind nicht an das Gefühl gewöhnt, Worte der Erzählung unerlaubt zu belauschen.

News from Home ist ein Film, der Geduld er­ fordert, der fordert, sich seinem Rhythmus hinzu­ geben. Gönnen Sie sich die Zeit zu sein, zu schauen und mit den Spannungen und Widersprüchen des­ sen zu leben, was es bedeutet, erwachsen zu werden, wegzugehen, in Verbindung zu bleiben, woanders zu leben, gleich­ zeitig ein Kind und ein*e Er­ wachsene*r zu sein, und an zwei Orten zu leben.

Den Voiceover hat die junge Chantal Akerman selbst ge­ sprochen. Sie hat zwei Versionen produziert, eine englische und eine französische. Viele Jahre war die französische Version in englisch­ sprachigen Ländern unbekannt und man nahm vielleicht etwas ­arrogant an, die Version, die wir kennen, sei die definitive. Ganze Theorien wurden über die Über­ setzung der Worte aus der Mutter­ sprache in eine andere gesponnen; der entfremdete Raum zwischen Zuhause und Anderswo, der sich in der akzentuierten Sprache der Tochter auftut, die die Worte der Mutter in einer Sprache ausspricht, die sie selbst nicht verstehen würde. In der akzentuierten englischen ­Version kann man diese Distanz und den Unterschied spüren.

Stellen Sie sich also unsere Überraschung vor, als mehrere renommierte Akerman-Forscher*innen sehr spät, nämlich auf einem Symposium nach Akermans Tod, erfuhren, dass ihre eigene bevor­ zugte Version tatsächlich diejenige ist, die sie in Französisch aufgenommen hat. Und das, obwohl Generationen von Filmwissenschaftler*innen und Fans in der englischsprachigen Welt behauptet ­hatten, dass die Version, die sie kannten, die Ent­ fremdung der Tochter von ihrer Mutter besonders treffend artikulierte und die gespaltene Subjekti­ vität, die durch diese gebrochene Sprache sprach, ­verkörperte. Und dennoch ist es wichtig zu sagen, dass es hier kein Richtig oder Falsch geben kann. ­Akerman mag ihre Lieblingsversion gehabt haben, aber auch Kritiker*innen haben ein Recht auf ihre ­Lesarten, und ich für meinen Teil denke immer noch, dass aus all den oben genannten Gründen die englische Version vorzuziehen ist.

Für mich ist die englische Version dort angesiedelt, wo der Film spielt, nämlich in New York. Sie erkennt ein Leben an, das weit weg von der Mutter gelebt wurde, in einer Sprache, die die Mut­ ter nie beherrschte, zu der sie keinen Zugang hatte, und doch werden ihre Worte als eine Art ambiva­ lente Einladung in diese Welt gebracht – und manchmal von ihr verschluckt.

Die Briefe der Mutter insistieren. Sie fügen eine Alltäglichkeit ein, die sagt, wir sind hier in Brüssel und leben unser ereignisloses Leben und du musst uns anerkennen. Du musst dich an uns erinnern. Wir sind ein Teil von dir. Und während der Blick der Tochter von so vielen anderen Menschen eingenommen ist, und von einer Landschaft, der sie trotzt, während sie sie verschlingt, schafft sie einen Raum, der die Mutter dennoch in ihre Welt mitnimmt.

Es ist die englische Version, mit den übersetzten und besonders akzentuierten Briefen, die es uns erlaubt, die komplexen Manöver zu registrieren, die es braucht, um an zwei Orten gleichzeitig zu sein, nah und fern, fort und da, und um geteilte und doch tief empfundene Loyalitäten zu verhandeln, ohne die begleitenden Schwierigkeiten auszulöschen oder zu glätten. All das ist in der Spannung zwischen Ton und Bild und in der stark akzentuierten Stimme, die die trügerisch-einfachen und unschein­ baren Worte der Mutter vorträgt, zu hören und zu spüren. In der bauchrednerischen Übersetzung der Worte der ­Mutter durch Akerman sind sie zu­ sammen und getrennt, sowohl da als auch nicht da, gleichzeitig weit weg und nah. Akerman musste all dies nie ausformulieren, so wie ich es hier getan habe, sie hat es einfach gelebt und gefilmt, wie sie es empfunden hat, und wurde nie müde, das ewige Fort-Da-Spiel zwischen Töchtern und ihren Müt­ tern zu spielen, oder zumindest das zwischen dieser bestimmten Tochter und ihrer Mutter.

Revisiting Chantal Akerman’s News from Home (1976) Text: Alisa Lebow

Chantal Akerman worked in an autobiographical register, in both her fiction and non-fiction films – a fact recognized by most, if not all, who write about her work. This is not to say her work was solipsistic, or even that it was faithful to the events of her life, but rather that she took herself as the starting and ending point for her cinematic engagement with the world. But where she began or ended in her own self-conception was another, less certain, matter. She had a set of tropes, verging on obsessions, that recur throughout her oeuvre (borders, exile, duration, wait­ ing, transience, Jewishness, home), but most promi­ nently, that of the mother. The mother, in Akerman’s films, is more than a character, and more even than a trope: she is the main point of identification, both abject and adored, which threatens to overflow the boundaries between the ‘self’ and the ‘other’. This is, of course, a well-worn second-wave feminist theme (Nancy Friday’s best-seller, My Mother/My Self came out in 1977), but Akerman always gave it a fresh and unexpected twist. In this brief article, I will discuss Chantal Akerman’s News from Home, an epistolary film that stages the fort-da relationship between mother and daughter in striking ways.

News from Home (Akerman, 1976) is Chantal Akerman’s 10th film, made in between her two best known films from the 1970s, Jeanne Dielman (1975) and Les Rendez-Vous d’Anna (1978). This is rele­ vant in part because her audience had, in the previ­ ous film, encountered a version of the mother who ­features so prominently in this film, and would come to learn something of the filmmaker-daughter’s ­perambulations in the next film.

But News from Home is also a break, a breather, a return to Akerman’s earlier, simpler, structuralist filmmaking, before the pressures of fame (which for her came extremely early), when experimentation had no consequences and she could just follow her instincts. She had made a few films in New York before – most notably Hotel

Monterey (1972), which was shot in a Manhattan SRO (Single Room Occupancy, also known as a ‘flophouse’ or ‘dosshouse’), a place where Akerman herself used to crash occasionally.

News from Home and Hotel Monterey employ something of the same method of long observational takes, often at a respectful distance but with ­Akerman’s signature penetrating gaze. Both films delight in the use of moving chambers (an elevator in Hotel Monterey, a subway car, an automobile, and a ferry in News from Home) to amplify the motion of the motion picture camera. Both of these films are enamored of New York, a city that Aker­ man returned to over and over in her life and where, ­legend has it, she learned about the films of avantgarde filmmakers like Jonas Mekas and Michael Snow. If Paris was to become her base for fiction ­filmmaking, NYC was her city for experimental, non-narrative filmmaking, at least in the 1970s.

Akerman had made her first trip to New York when she was 20 (in 1971), leaving Brussels abruptly and vowing to herself to keep in touch while she was away. In her words: Once I got there I told myself that I’d have to write them a great deal in order to keep them up to date, to maintain that connection. New York, for my parents’ generation at least, is still a sort of myth, a dream. For me, what I saw every day was Soho, the subway, loneliness, and that was no match for the myth, a myth already rotting.

At the same time, I was living an extraordi­ nary experience. To see people as blurred (indefinis) as myself, that did me a lot of good.

They seemed to be going nowhere, and I didn’t know where I was going either. Back home, in my family environment, in Brussels, people got up at seven o’clock, they went to work, they were defined. In contrast to them I was always drifting.

On her first visit, Akerman stayed in New York for 7 months, received a slew of letters from her mother, went back to Belgium briefly, and then returned to New York three months later, somehow knowing she would make a film.

Akerman said: “I was in the plane and I thought – my mother is going to send me those let­ ters again […] That’s how I got the idea of the film.”

Though she came up with the idea for the film in 1971, and lived in New York more or less continu­ ously from October 1971 to March 1973, she didn’t actually shoot the footage to go with those letters until 1976, after she had made, as mentioned earlier, her critically acclaimed feature film Jeanne Dielman. This film starred French New Wave sensation Delphine Seyrig, cast distinctly against type as a petit bourgeois Belgian housewife whose daily rou­ tines were loosely, or not so loosely, based on her own mother’s and aunt’s. Akerman was 25 when she made Jeanne Dielman, which was widely considered even at the time to be a masterpiece. Jeanne Dielman was Akerman’s second feature; she had made Je, Tu, Il, Elle the year before, in 1974.

About the making of News from Home, Aker­ man has said: I had a sort of plan, I knew very well the places where I wanted to shoot; I knew how it would start and how it would end. It was to be paced around the subway sequences: above, below, but nothing systematic. I knew how the sound would organize itself, with quiet moments and then more violent ones. Everything plays in terms of ruptures, visual rhythms, lines.

The New York we see in the film is somehow simul­ taneously evacuated and heavily populated, it is bustling and still, cacophonous and if not silent, then muted. And in a playful push-pull tension, the mother both is and is not present, hard to shake off and yet never quite there. The closeness and inti­ macy wrought by the words “My Darling Daugh­ ter” is mitigated by the gnawing guilt-trip exuding from each letter. The distance between the words and the images is something of a relief, another kind of breathing space, from the endless pull or tug of the mother.

And yet, instead of showing us how exciting her life is as a filmmaker, in contrast to her mother’s often dreary letters, Akerman reveals her alienated, distanced view of her adopted city. She has a feel for the city, to be sure, but it is always at one remove, from the outside looking in, as it were. As Kenneth White suggests, “Akerman is not a New Yorker. News from Home is the product of an indi­ vidual on uneasy terms with her environment.”

But it’s not all or only about alienation. There is a lot of love in this film. First and foremost the love of the mother, expressed over and over again as she signs off every letter: “Your mother who loves you.” There is also a love of New York, both above ground and below. There is an affection for

its dereliction, its dysfunction, its empty lots and potholes, its graffitied trains and weary commuters, slightly suspicious yet resigned to being caught in the filmmaker’s steady gaze. There is also tremen­ dous love for the mother on the daughter’s part, even if there is some tinge of cruelty in the act of reading out these private missives, never meant for a public audience.

This film has been interpreted, not least by Akerman herself, as being slightly unkind to the mother, as if contrasting the dull­ ness of the mother’s words with the dynamic cosmopolitanism of the filmmaker-daughter’s adventures in the big metropolis. But upon reflection, one can see it as a way of keeping the mother close. Perhaps even of reproducing the dullness in another register. After all, the image of the city Akerman chooses to show is not the bright lights and big-city buzz one might expect, but simply another version of a mundane, workaday city, full of average people and unexceptional streets. The cars are beat up, the roads rutted with potholes, the faces gloomy with the prospect of another day just like the one before and the one to come.

It’s as if Akerman travels as far away as possible only to repro­ duce the quotidian-ness she has left behind.

And the mother accompanies the daughter unwittingly, holding her from afar. As if, in the empty vistas of New York, unable to connect deeply with anyone or anything, there is still the anchor of the mother, whose simple and repetitive refrains reas­ sure, pulling her just that bit closer, allow­ ing her, in effect, to be in two places at once, and thus to be able to bear the strangeness in the familiar and the familiarity in the strange.

Sometimes the audience has to struggle to hear the mother’s words. They get drowned out by the sounds of the city. The daughter’s adopted city threatens to eat the mother’s words whole, devouring their sim­ plicity and straightforwardness. Adriana Cerne notes that “at times the voice is rubbed out – as if it were writing”. She conjures the image of words erased on a page, but drowning out is something else – it is a battle, a struggle, it requires an effort to be made. We don’t simply stop trying to hear the words; in fact, we try that much harder.

And not the way we would try to decipher erased pencil marks like a spy, but rather as if we are trying to remain faithful to that which we are entitled to hear. We are not accustomed to feeling as if we are illicitly overhearing the words of narration, they are usually ours for the hearing.

News from Home is a film that requires patience, requires you to allow the rhythms to ­overtake you. Allow yourself the time to be, to look, to live with the tensions and contradictions of what it means to grow up, to move away, to stay connected, to be elsewhere, to be a child and an adult, to live in two places at once.

The voiceover for the film is performed by a young Chantal Akerman, who made two versions, one in French and one in English. For many years,

many of us in English-speaking countries were unaware of the French version and assumed, perhaps arrogantly, that the definitive version was the one we knew. Whole theories have been spun about the translation of the mother’s words, from the mother tongue into another’s; the alienated space in between home and elsewhere that opens up in the accented speech of the daughter voicing words of the mother that the mother herself would not understand. In the accented English version, one can sense the distance and the difference by virtue of the tongue-lag.

So imagine our surprise when several renowned Akerman scholars learned very belatedly – at a sym­ posium held after Akerman’s death, in fact – that Akerman’s own preferred version is actually the one she recorded in French. This despite the fact that generations of film scholars and fans in the English-speaking world had asserted that the ver­ sion they knew neatly articulated the dislocation of the daughter from her mother, enacting the split subjectivity that spoke in that broken tongue. And yet, it is important to say, there is no right or wrong here. Akerman may have had her preferred version, but critics too have a right to their readings, and I for one still think, for all the reasons men­ tioned, that the English-language version might still be preferable. For me, the English version resides where the film resides, that is to say, in New York. It acknowledges a life lived far from the mother in a language the mother had never mastered and could not access, yet her words are brought into that world (and sometimes swallowed up by it) as a kind of ambivalent invitation.

The mother’s letters insist. They insert and assert a quotidian-ness that says, we are here, in Brussels, living our uneventful lives, and you must recognize us. You must remember us. We are a part of you. And while the daughter’s gaze is taken up with so many others who people her frame, and with a landscape that defies as it engulfs, she nonetheless creates a space that brings the mother along into her world.

It is the English version, with its translated and accented letters, that allows us to register the complex maneuvers required to be in two places at once, to be close and distant, gone and there, and to negotiate divided yet deeply felt alle­ giances without erasing or smoothing out the difficulties.

It’s all available to be heard and felt and seen, in the tensions between sound and image and in the strongly accented voice that delivers the mother’s deceptively simple and unassuming words. With Akerman ventriloquizing the mother’s words in translation, they are together and separate, both there and not there, at once ­distant and close. Akerman never had to spell all of this out, as I’ve just done; she simply lived it and filmed it as she experienced it, never tiring of the eternal fort-da game played out between daughters and their mothers, or at least between this particu­ lar daughter and her mother.

This sumptuous hand, as if it doesn’t belong to me, crippled for reasons it does not understand, now seems appropriately mine.

Kapitel I In nur gut einem Jahr vollbrachte Charlotte Pose­ nenske ihr heute gefeiertes Werk, die unlimitierten Serien. Ihr Manifest zeugt von ihrer Programmatik und dem Entschluss, mit der Kunst, die sie ohnehin an ihr Ende gekommen sah, zu brechen. Dieser Bruch wird als letzter künstlerischer Akt angesehen, „als Konsequenz eines in ihrem Werk überall beleg­ baren Reduktionismus“, so Burkhard Brunn. Ihre Serien signierte sie nicht, stellte sie auch nicht selbst her, sondern konzipierte Einzelteile, die zum Selbst­ kostenpreis gekauft und montiert werden konnten.

Reproduzierbarkeit, Erschwinglichkeit, Zugäng­ lichkeit und demokratische wie kooperative Modelle waren ihr ebenso wichtig wie das Taktile, Spiele­ rische und Ephemere ihres Werks.

Ihr enger Freund Peter Roehr starb 1968 mit kaum 24 Jahren. Auch er ist heute vielfach gerühmt, und auch er brach mit der Kunst, wie dieser so ­eindringliche Brief zeigt. Der ­Verweis auf Charlotte Posenenske ist keinesfalls zufällig, verband die beiden doch nicht nur eine so kurze wie intensive künstlerische Praxis, sondern auch die Motive, mit ebendieser Kunst und Kulturproduktion aufzuhören.

Dieses Flugblatt wurde bei der vierten Documenta 1968 verteilt. Wahrscheinlich hat Charlotte ­Posenenske es nicht selbst verfasst, sondern den Besucher*innen am Eröffnungstag in die Hand gedrückt. CC: There has been no lack of attempts in the past to make art accessible and affordable, to thwart its economic appropriation and to expose its cooperative, tactile and playful dimensions.

Things and the Unconditional – Renegotiations of Art and Society in Three Chapters “I find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that art can contribute to nothing to the solution of pressing social problems.” This statement from Charlotte Posenenske aptly demarcates the subject matter in the following three exam­ ples. We begin at the end of the 1960s in Frank­ furt, as Charlotte Posenenske forges radical new paths with her unlimited series. From here we head to Remscheid, Düsseldorf and Cologne, where Wolfgang Feelisch’s VICE-Versand tire­ lessly sells unlimited multiples by famous artists at cost from the 1960s to the 1980s. We end our journey at the beginning of the 1990s in Cologne, where the project spaces Copyshop and Friesen­ wall 120 delve into the possibilities of the counter­public. We look at the series, the multi­ ple, the project space – at the things. We also look at the way these three artistic practices are used, their meanings, and their consequences – at the unconditional.

Chapter I In just over a year Charlotte Posenenske completed her now celebrated work, the unlimited series. Her manifesto testifies to her agenda and the decision to make a break with art, which she anyhow saw as having come to an end. This break is considered a final artistic act, “as the consequence of a reduc­ tionism demonstrated throughout her work,” according to Burkhard Brunn. She did not sign her series, she also did not produce them herself, rather she conceptualized single components that could be sold at cost and assembled. Reproducibility, affordability, accessibility, and democratic and ­collaborative models were just as important to her as the ­tactility, playfulness, and ephemerality of her work.

CHARLOTTE POSENENSKE The things I make are changeable as simple as possible reproducible.

They are components of a space, because they are similar to building ­elements, they can always be rearranged into new combinations or positions, thereby altering space.

I leave this alteration to the consumer, who thereby again and again participates in the assembly process.

The simplicity of the basic geometric forms is beautiful and suited to demonstrate the principles of rationalized alteration.

I make series because I do not want to make individual pieces for individuals, in order to have elements combinable within a system, in order to make something that is repeatable, objective, and because it is economical.

The series can be prototypes for mass-production.

Series DW (at Fisher’s) is made of corrugated cardboard, which is lightweight and inexpensive: a material for consumption.

Often, the elements or their combinations are very large in order to alter the spatial surroundings all the more thoroughly. They approximate architectural dimensions and for this reason also increasingly differ from the former gallery objects.

They are less and less recognizable as “works of art.”

The objects are intended to have the objective character of industrial ­products.

They are not intended to represent anything other than what they are.

The previous categorization of the arts no longer exists. Future artists will have to work with a team of experts in a development laboratory.

Although art’s formal development has progressed at an increasing tempo, its social function has withered.

Art is a commodity that is only temporarily contemporary, yet the ­market is minute, and prestige and prices rise the less current the supply is.

I find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that art can contribute to nothing to the solution of pressing social problems.

Dear Mr. van Ravesteijn, Thank you for your letter! Maybe you have already heard from Charlotte Posenenske that I am not making ‘art’ anymore.

I think that the motives that lead to this culture production are quite irresponsible socially, but most certainly useless – except to some artists themselves and the art market. And neither interests me anymore since quite some time.

Therefore, also no more exhibitions of my earlier work, all of which had very well been alright at some point, but are today no longer important enough to me to deal with the hassle of an exhibition.

Her close friend Peter Roehr died in 1968 just shy of his 24th birthday. Today he too is much lauded, and he also broke with art, as this very emphatic letter shows. The reference to Charlotte Posenenske is not at all a coincidence; the two were connected not just by their short but intensive artistic practices but also by the same motives to quit art and ­culture production.

YOU CULTURE SNOBS, So you come together again and blather and lie and bullshit all for your own benefit. Everyone fancies himself and his stuff to be so special, never noticing just how specious he really is.

You ought to finally realize that you are useless! Exactly as useless as the art that you make, sell, ­consume, critique – in short: your entire apparatus of appreciation and devaluation of ­imaginary and inculcated value in which you claim to believe!

This flyer was distributed at the fourth documenta in 1968. Charlotte Posenenske probably did not compose it herself, but rather just passed it out to visitors at the opening of the exhibition. Authorship was for her of no importance in any case; collabora­ tive forms of creation were much more desirable.

Though the style of the writing corresponds little to her, the document and its context are a revealing addendum to her manifesto.

Artists – little names, big names – fumble around here and don’t notice that reality has long since overtaken them and not just aesthetically. They take note of the “art problem” and fabricate something on top of their formal “revolutions”. They are thirsting for some capitalist to empty his pockets. “By day, tell ’em who’s boss – that’s life”, and in the evenings you show yourself and others that you aren’t like this at all, you have culture. That you can afford yukking it up with the four Castellis and a well-wrapped paradise from Christo.

It is ridiculous when they distance the American artists from the Vietnam War so that there won’t be demonstrations against them in Kassel. You can’t condemn the capitalistic war in ­Vietnam and build yourself a cultural alibi from the same societal system. And the oh so engaged ones who take on reality waste it with a comfortable aesthetic.

The assholes who complained sit in the audience and applaud.

There is no need to make art anymore.

There is no need for documenta.

It is an instrument. It is at the disposal of a system that makes use of it. documenta represents all that which is used by the system to fake progressiveness.

Get it through your heads already: a cube is a cube. Whoever declares it to be an art cube makes themselves suspect.

Kapitel II Mitte der 1960er Jahre gründete Wolfgang Feelisch den VICE-Versand, um unlimitierte Multiples von Künstler*innen insbesondere aus dem FluxusUmfeld zum Selbstkostenpreis zu verbreiten. Ziel war es, Öffentlichkeit herzustellen, Kunst alltäglich, geradezu ‚handgreiflich‘ und so günstig wie möglich zu machen und ein demokratisches Modell der ­Kultur gegen den Kunstmarkt zu etablieren. Über 12.000 Mal wurde Joseph Beuys’ Intuition zwischen 1968 und 1985 verkauft, anfänglich für 8 DM, am Ende für 27 DM. Jedes einzelne Multiple wurde von Beuys eigenhändig signiert und mit der Inschrift „Intuition“ versehen, stets in Anwesenheit von Wolfgang Feelisch. „Bei den Holzkisten ist es schon eine erhebliche Arbeit […], denn der Feelisch kommt alle naselang und da geht jedes Mal ein ganzer Tag drauf, denn die Dinge muss ich ja alle selber machen, sonst werden sie nichts.“ (Beuys) Erstmals in der Öffentlichkeit ausgestellt wurde Beuys’ Intuition parallel zum Kölner Kunstmarkt – in einem Supermarkt.

Feelisch hatte die Kästen zunächst an verschiedene Künstler*innen mit der Bitte um Entwürfe ver­ schickt. Alle sahen die Kästen als Behälter oder Rahmung an, allein Beuys machte den Kasten selbst zum Kunstwerk. Form und Inhalt stellen eine Ein­ heit dar, die Rezeption ist unmittelbarer, untrenn­ barer und wesentlicher Teil des Werks. Intuition gilt als das Multiple par excellence, worin sich alle Ver­ sprechen und Hoffnungen, aber auch das Scheitern und die Widersprüche kristallisieren.

Trotz der so hohen Auflage erzielt Intuition heute Preise von über 1.000 Euro. Die Aporien des Mul­ tiples lassen sich letztlich nicht auflösen: Signiert oder unsigniert, in kleiner Auflage oder unlimitiert, das Beharren auf den Selbstkostenpreis oder Spe­ kulation auf dem Kunstmarkt, Entmystifizierung durch Massenproduktion oder doch Aura des Ori­ ginals, die nicht unterlaufen werden kann. Fee­ lischs Ideal und Sisyphusarbeit scheinen heute fer­ ner denn je.

Chapter II In the mid-1960s Wolfgang Feelisch founded VICE-Versand for the distribution of unlimited, at-cost multiples by artists, especially from the Fluxus scene. The aim was to produce a public sphere, to make art common, directly palpable, and as affordable as possible, and to establish a demo­ cratic model of culture in counter to the art market.

Between 1968 and 1985, Joseph Beuys’s Intuition was sold more than 12,000 times, at first for 8 Deut­ sche Marks and later for 27. Every single multiple was signed personally by Beuys and supplied with the inscription “Intuition”, always in the presence of Wolfgang Feelisch. “With the wooden boxes it is a considerable amount of work […], since Feelisch comes by constantly and every time it takes the whole day, for I really do have to make the things myself, otherwise they are nothing” (Beuys). In parallel to the Kölner Kunstmarkt, Beuys’s Intuition was shown publicly for the first time – in a supermarket.

Feelisch had initially sent the boxes to different ­artists with a request for ideas. They all saw the boxes as containers or frames; only Beuys turned the box itself into an artwork. Here form and content exist as a unit, and the reception constitutes a direct, ­inextricable, and essential part of the work. Intuition is considered the multiple par excellence, a crystal­ lization of its promises and hopes but also failures and contradictions.

Despite such a large number of copies in circulation, Intuition fetches prices of over 1,000 euros today.

The aporias of the multiple ultimately do not easily resolve themselves: signed or unsigned, small ­editions or unlimited, insistence on selling at cost or speculation on the art market, demystification through mass production or aura of the original that cannot be escaped. Feelisch’s ideals and Sisyphean task seem today even further away than ever.

Die Kunstszene der Stadt wähnt sich noch in Zeiten, als man in einem Atemzug mit New York genannt wurde, und zugleich beschleicht sie schon die berechtigte Angst, von Berlin pro­vinzialisiert zu werden.

Als Gegenmesse zur Art Cologne findet die Unfair statt. Die Projekt­ räume Copyshop und Friesenwall 120 werden zum Zentrum des soge­ nannten Rahmenprogramms der Unfair. Sie bringen den Begriff der Gegenöffent­lichkeit ins Spiel, der bewusst auf die künstlerischen und sozialen Bewegungen der 1960er und 1970er Jahre rekurriert. Wir nutzen diese historische Konstella­ tion für einen kurzen, so wehmüti­ gen wie kritischen Blick zurück.

In Köln fand 1967 die weltweit erste Messe für bildende Kunst statt – ebenso alt ist in Köln auch die Tradi­ tion der Protestaktionen und Gegen­ messen, wobei es schwer ist, zwischen hehren und opportunistischen ­Motiven zu unterscheiden. Auch die Unfair im Jahr 1992 wollte als Gegenveranstaltung zur Art Cologne gesellschaftspolitische Akzente set­ zen – allerdings: die Initiator*innen waren zuvor nicht zur Art Cologne eingeladen worden. Für Galerien und Künstler*innen war diese Gegen­ veranstaltung vor allem ein Sprung­ brett und eine günstige Möglichkeit, Netzwerke zu knüpfen. Schon zwei Jahre später waren die meisten Gale­ rien auf der Art Cologne vertreten.

Stärker aber als die Unfair selbst wiegt heute die Suggestivkraft des Rahmenprogramms.

Das Rahmenprogramm der Unfair wurde vom Projektraum Friesenwall 120 organisiert, den vornehmlich Stephan Dillemuth von 1989 bis 1994 betrieb. Als Archiv, Ausstellungs­ raum und „verlängertes Wohn­ zimmer“ stellte er irritierende Situa­ tionen her, die mal Gegenentwurf zum Kölner Galeriewesen waren, mal als deren experimentelle Ergänzung dienten. Es war informeller Kristalli­ sations­punkt von Künstler*innen­ gruppen, die sich am „Wunder, sich kennenzulernen“ berauschten. War der Friesenwall 120 mehr als ein Ort, an dem man ein „antifaschistisches Bier“ trank, wie sich Dillemuth allzu kritisch selbst fragte? Er lotete jeden­ falls fünf Jahre lang intensiv die Möglichkeiten aus, was ein kleiner Projektraum ohne Förderung und „ohne dass Autorenschaft und Kunstobjekte eine Rolle spielen soll­ ten“, zu bewirken imstande ist.

Proto-Internet-Café und Ausstel­ lungsraum, Info-Laden und Kneipe: Copyshop, von der Künstler*innen­ gruppe BüroBert (Renate Lorenz und Jochen Becker) während des Rah­ menprogramms der Unfair betrieben, agierte an der Schnittstelle von künstlerischer Praxis und politischem Aktivismus. Das so dichte wie viel­ fältige Programm reflektierte einen Monat lang künstlerische und kura­ torische, politische und soziale, nicht zuletzt mediale und kommunikative Strukturen. Hier deutete sich eine Engführung von Politik, Theorie und Kunst an, die für Ausstellungsprakti­ ken wegweisend sein sollte und über das kurze Aufglimmen des Begriffs der Gegenöffentlichkeit hinausging.

The city’s art scene still persists in believing that the days when it was mentioned in the same breath as New York are not over, all the while a legiti­ mate fear of being provincialized

by Berlin is creeping in. The Unfair is organized to run counter to Art Cologne. The project spaces Copyshop and Friesenwall 120 become the ­center of what is ostensibly the frame­ work program of the Unfair. They bring the term “counterpublic” into play, which ­consciously refers back to the artistic and social movements of the 1960s and ’70s. We make use of this historical constellation for a short look back, one that is as nostalgic as it is critical.

The first trade fair for fine art in the world took place in 1967 in Cologne; the tradition of ­protest actions and counter fairs in Cologne is just as old, though it is difficult to tell the differ­ ence between noble and opportunistic motives. As counter event to Art Cologne, the Unfair of 1992 likewise wanted to place emphasis on socio-­ political issues – its initiators had how­ ever themselves not been accepted into Art Cologne. For galleries and artists this counter event was above all a springboard and a good opportu­ nity to network. Just two years later most of the galleries were included at Art Cologne. Today the suggestive power of the events happening along the framework program has a greater weight than the Unfair itself.

The framework program of the Unfair was organized by the project space Friesenwall 120, which was run from 1989 to 1994, primarily by Stephan Dillemuth. As archive, exhibition space and “extended living room”, it put together disconcerting situations that were sometimes counter concepts to the Cologne gallery scene and other times served as their experimental extension. It was an informal focal point of artists’ groups who were high on the “marvel of getting to know each other”. Was Friesenwall 120 more than a place where you drank “anti­ fascist beer”, as Dillemuth himself all too critically asked? In any case for five years he intensively sounded out the possibilities of what a small project space is capable of achieving without funding and “without authorship and art objects having to play a role”.

Proto internet café and exhibition space, infoshop and bar: Copyshop was run by the artist group BüroBert (Renate Lorenz and Jochen Becker) during the framework program of the Unfair and existed at the intersection of art practice and political ­activism.

As dense as it was diverse, its monthlong program reflected artistic and curatorial, political and social, as well as mediumistic and communicative structures. It portended a coupling of politics, theory and art, which set a trend for exhibition practices and transcended the short glimmer of the notion of the counterpublic.

Worte des Erzählers: Da ist eine Welt, die zu sprechen beginnt.

Hörst du sie? Das erste Sprechen ist lärmend, etwas ungeordnet. Man mahnt sie zur Ordnung.

Man beschneidet das besondere Material ihrer kehlig-gutturalen Stimme. Es stimmt, dass sie sich in einem Ausbruch entlädt, nachdem sie zu lange zurückgehalten wurde. Man will wis­ sen, was das ist. Das Knacken eines Astes, der Schrei eines Vogels, das Seufzen von Pilzen?

Man erinnert sie an den Kanon, die Kanäle, die Regeln einer Sprache, die nicht die ihre ist.

Man stutzt sich das Chaotische zurecht, damit es mit den feinsinnigsten Philosophien an einem Tisch sitzen darf. Man macht daraus ein wohl­ gesetztes und glänzendes Spektakel. Denn was könnte die Schwarze Stimme anderes sein als ein strahlend leuchtendes Ding, das not­ wendigerweise ,amazing‘ ist, ,eine Neuheit‘, bekannt und elegant, ohne schmutziges Gesicht und ohne Lärm? Ohne jedes Wort, das fehl am Platz wäre. Und doch ist das Lärmende ein ­Wissen, eine besondere Form von Wissen, ein Raum, in dem sich Geschichten kreuz und quer anhäufen. So wissen es manche, und so spre­ chen sie. Und sie lernen in diesem Gewirr und Getöse, was sie bereits wissen, was sie auf eine andere Weise spüren, die sich lange still verhielt.

Nun aber tut sie es nicht mehr.

In diesem Jahr der Pandemie begegnete ich bei ­verschiedenen Gelegenheiten – auf Zoom und manchmal auch persönlich – rassifizierten Künstler*innen und Student*innen, die aus der Diaspora stammen und in Europa oder in den ­Vereinigten Staaten leben. Es war eine sehr wertvolle Erfahrung für mich, die in gewisser Weise von einem Zustand der Verwirrung geprägt war. Ich halte es für notwendig, auf ihn hinzuweisen, und möchte den Versuch unternehmen, ihm nach­ zuspüren. Denn bei diesem emotionalen Zustand könnte es sich um eine der ästhetischen Formen handeln, die in einem historischen Augenblick zutage treten, wenn sich bestimmte Stimmen laut­ stark Gehör verschaffen oder bestimmte un­er­ wünschte Bilder einen Ort finden, um unerwartet hochzukommen.

Um diesen Gedankengang weiterzuverfolgen, müssen wir zunächst den Begriff ‚Verwirrung‘ von dem lösen, was er Abwertendes in sich trägt, ihn anders auffassen. Denn diese Verwirrung, die ich auch ‚Störung‘ nenne, versucht hier, eine Gesamtheit von Sprech- und Handlungsweisen, Seh- und Fühlweisen zu beschreiben. Ausgehend von einem Körper, der sich dem modernen Erbe der ­Vernunft widersetzt und somit auch der Vorstellung eines klaren und aufgeklärten, sich präzise aus­ drückenden Geistes, wie er eine würdige Menschheit auszeichnen sollte, die sich über das Dunkel in der Welt zu erheben vermag. Im Gegensatz zu diesem

modernen Körper, der sich von einer radikalen Trennung her von dem, was er nicht ist, denkt – sei es über eine Distanzierung von der ihn umgebenden Welt, über die Durchsetzung seiner Erzählmuster oder den Einsatz einer biopolitischen Polizei an seinen physischen Grenzen –, möchte ich den Blick darauf lenken, was diese Verwirrung, diese Störung, über einen anderen Körper erzählt, geformt von einer gesteigerten Aufmerksamkeit, einer radikalen Gastlichkeit, die er sich auferlegt hat, den Erzählungen mehrerer Welten – menschlicher ebenso wie nicht-menschlicher – entgegenzubringen.

Einen Körper, der somit auch zwanghaften und mit aller Wucht auftretenden Intrusionen ausgesetzt ist, die ihn zu einem authentischen postkolonialen Material verschmelzen, bis an die Schwelle zum Wahnsinn. Einen Körper, der sich daraufhin der Kräfte der Raserei bemächtigt, sich für Halluzi­ nationen öffnet, um eine Welt zu erfinden und den giftigen Ufern der Vernunft zu entfliehen, hin zu einem Zustand der Verwirrung als künftiges Land, als erträgliches Leben.

Mit dem hier eingeführten Begriff der ‚Störung‘ möchte ich mehrere Aspekte der stimmgewaltigen Intrusion ausdrücken, die mich interessiert.

Auf einer ersten Ebene zeigt uns das Wort eine ver­ schlungene Welt auf, die die Beziehungen der ­Menschen untereinander ebenso wie die zwischen dem Menschen und nicht-menschlichen Existenzen in neue Vorstellungen fasst. In dem Wort ‚Störung‘

ist aber auch der Gedanke des Verstört-Seins ent­ halten, als ein emotionaler Zustand, auf dessen Ursprung und besondere Natur ich später noch ein­ gehen werde. Und schließlich bezeichnet der Begriff auch das, was stört (,trouble-making‘), und entfaltet hier seinen ganzen Reiz. Diesem Gedankengang möchte ich weiter folgen, um zu verstehen, wie eine bestimmte verschlungene Welt verworrene Aus­ drücke hervorbringt und diese wiederum Körper, die stören und mitunter die ‚Stimmung trüben‘.

Dies steht der coolen Vorstellung einer Kreolisie­ rung entgegen und greift wohl eher auf das Getöse der Chaos-Welt zurück, von dem Édouard Glissant sprach und das sich in den philosophischen Salons von heute zu einer süßen Konsensmusik gewandelt zu haben scheint.

Der afroamerikanische Soziologe W. E. B. Du Bois führte 1903 in seinem berühmten Buch Die Seelen der Schwarzen den Begriff eines doppelten Bewusst­ seins ein, um so das besondere Selbstverständnis der aus der transatlantischen Sklaverei hervor­ gegangenen Schwarzen Diaspora zu beschreiben: nämlich das Bewusstsein einer Zugehörigkeit zu Nationalstaaten ebenso wie zu afrikanischen Welten. Afrikanischen Welten, die wiederum durch eine Reihe radikaler, von der kolonialen Moderne verordneter Brüche zersplittert waren, weit entfernt, geisterhaft und teilweise verboten. Dieses doppelte Bewusstsein hat sich in fast 120 Jahren, so scheint mir, zu einem multiplen Bewusstsein weiter­ entwickelt und wird zusätzlich noch durch das ­Aufkommen des digitalen Zeitalters gespalten, das eine*n jede*n mit multiplen und fernen Reali­ täten in Verbindung setzt. Hieraus ergibt sich eine psychische Anspannung, die bis an die Grenze des Erträglichen geht.

Um noch einmal auf die Künstler*innen der afrikanischen und afrokaribischen Diaspora zurückzukommen, denen ich in diesem Jahr der Gesundheitskrise überwiegend begegnet bin: Ich konnte spüren, wie sehr sie von einer wider­ sprüchlichen Spannung zerrissen waren von der Notwendigkeit, den Bruch in der Weitergabe ihrer Geschichte zu schließen und zugleich auf immer drängendere Forderungen reagieren zu müssen, ebendiese bruchstückhafte Geschichte der west­ lichen Kunstszene zu präsentieren. Denn es sei darauf hingewiesen, dass diese Künstler*innen ein zunehmend geschärftes Gespür dafür besitzen, was von ihnen erwartet wird. Sie haben ein fein aus­ gebildetes Sensorium für ihnen entgegenkommende ästhetische Dispositive entwickelt, mit denen sie arbeiten können und die nach ihren Worten, ihren Bildern und ihren Körpern verlangen. Dies ist die Folge einer erzwungenen Aufmerksamkeit für die Wünsche der Herrschenden, die sich zu einem Geschick der Antizipation gewandelt hat.

Hierin simuliert sich eher eine Situation echter Gleichheit, als dass diese tatsächlich bestünde, und sie zeugt vor allem von einem Wissen darum, wie man sich den Gefahren des Todes entzieht:

das tut, was von einem erwartet wird, um am Leben zu bleiben, um sich zu schützen. Noch ist dies aber keine Situation, in der es möglich ist, mit eigenen Worten zu sprechen. Eine Situation, von der wir annehmen, dass sie sich nur in Lärm, Wut und ­Verwirrung herbeiführen lässt. In störender, unruhiger Weise also. Dieses Stimmengewirr und das gesättigte Bild – zusammengesetzt aus akku­ mulierten Schichten von Sichtweisen – zeichnen die Emanzipation aus. So sieht ein Wort aus, das nach langem Schweigen fällt, das spricht und nicht zustimmt.

Der diasporische Körper ist ein solcher Raum der Akkumulation, gefangen zwischen zwei Welten, und was er in der Gegenwart sehr genau auszu­ drücken vermag, ist dieser Zustand der Verwirrung, der Überlagerung, des Getöses und der Unordnung.

Denn was zum Schweigen gebracht wurde, kann nicht in aller Gelassenheit hervortreten. Geschich­ ten, Wissensformen und Stimmen steigen in diesem Körper auf und wählen ihren Weg, ergreifen über­ raschend Besitz von ihm, bewohnen ihn und ver­ stören ihn ‚bis an die Grenzen der Vernunft‘. Erfüllt von dieser Wut, von so vielen Dingen gleichzeitig sprechen zu müssen, von diesem Übermaß, das sich nicht zum bloßen Vergnügen eines Auges, das nun danach verlangt, entladen kann, bewegt sich der diasporische Körper auf einem Grat der Erschöpfung. Und er wird lernen müssen, zu über­ leben, tief durchzuatmen, im intensiven Bewusstsein dessen, was hier, auf den Bühnen des Westens, zu sagen und zu tun ist, und gleichzeitig steht er dort in der Verantwortung, sich für den lebendigen Strom jener zu öffnen, die bisher nicht sprechen konnten, für den Strom all der Toten, denen das Wort ­verweigert und jede Möglichkeit eines lebendigen Weitergebens genommen wurde, die zu einem ­negativen, gegen sich selbst gerichteten Leben ver­ urteilt waren.

Während das politische Umfeld des globalen Nordens heute oszilliert zwischen den Forderungen nach einer Zwangsintegration – in Fortführung eines Bruches mit dem ‚dort drüben‘ – und nach einer Selbst­exotisierung – als Weigerung, ‚hier‘ weiter in einem Zustand der Verwirrung zu ver­ bleiben –, zeugt die Ästhetik der Unruhe und Störung von einer wichtigen Übergangsphase für einen Teil der Menschheit. Diese Dynamik darf nicht mit einer abstrakten Kreolisierung verwechselt werden – denn sie vollzieht sich in einzelnen, von geisterhaften, aber auch heiteren Geschichten durchdrungenen Körpern, und in ihr kommt ein innerer Aufruhr zum Ausdruck, der bisweilen ungeheuerliche Formen annimmt.

Was der diasporische Körper so schmerzhaft in sich vereint, ist eine Folge dessen, dass er am Sprechen, am Projizieren nach außen gehindert wurde. Er kündet vom langen Entzug der Fähigkeit, die Welt aus eigenem Empfinden und aus seinen besonderen Wissensformen heraus zu gestalten.

Er vermittelt lautstark die Problematik, als ein zwei­ fach verfügbarer Körper zu leben: verfügbar für

gewalttätige oder begehrende Projektionen, für ­Diskurse und Wissensweisen des Westens ebenso wie für die unaufhaltsame Wiederkehr nicht ­ausgesprochener Geschichten, für die er in dringender Verantwortung steht. Er ist somit das herzzerreißende Theater der Verwirrung, der unruhige Hallraum, der fiebrige Erzähler eines ungeordneten Selbst.

Als ich hörte, was die Menschen berichteten, denen ich während des pandemischen Winters in der ­seltsamen, schwebenden Welt der Monitore begegnete, als ich ihre visuellen, choreografischen, textuellen und oralen Arbeiten untersuchte und besprach, erkannte ich die Notwendigkeit, neue Formen der Akzeptanz für diese verwirrten Körper und bisweilen verworrenen Worte zu finden. Dass es nicht nur darum geht, sich ihrer annehmen zu wollen, ihnen dabei zu helfen, ‚ihre Gedanken zu klären‘, sondern vielmehr darum, das ungeheuer­ liche Land anzunehmen, auf das sie am Horizont verweisen, ein Land, für das wir noch keine Worte haben und in dem Geschichten unvermittelt her­ vordrängen. Wir müssen nun lernen, das Getöse zu hören, mit dem zerbricht, was diese Geschichten unter Schloss und Riegel gehalten hat, wir müssen lernen, die Unordnung dessen anzunehmen, was sich vom Schweigen emanzipiert und uns aufruft, sich dem Abenteuer des Lebendigen anzuschließen.

In Defense of an Aesthetic of Disorder: Notes on Artistic Forms of Empancipation Text: Olivier Marboeuf Translation: Good&Cheap Translators

Words of the storyteller: There is a world that is starting to speak. Can you hear it? This emergence of speech is noisy, a little disordered. They call it to order. They ­dissect the peculiar substance of its saturated voice. It is true that it appears in an explosion, on account of having been restrained for too long.

They want to know what it is. The snap of a branch, the cry of a bird, sighing mushrooms?

They remind it of the ideals, the channels, the rules of speech that are not its own. They ampu­ tate this chaos so that it may sit at the same table as the most subtle philosophies. They make it into a well-behaved, brilliant spectacle. For what could a Black voice be if not a brightly shining object, incontrovertibly ‘amazing’, a familiar and ‘elegant novelty’, without a dirty face, soundless?

Without a word out of line. Yet this racket is a form of knowledge, a unique way of knowing, a space where disordered stories accumulate.

This is how some people know and this is how they speak. And it is in this confusion and in that they learn what they already knew, what they had already sensed in a different way, one that was silent for a long time – but not anymore.

On a number of occasions during this pandemic year, I have met – sometimes on Zoom, sometimes in the flesh – racialized artists and students of the ­diaspora living either in Europe or the United States.

This was a very rich experience, and I was struck by a certain state of confusion that I find necessary to express. Moreover, I would even like to try to ­pursue it, for this emotional state could well be one

of the aesthetic forms of a historic moment in which certain voices loudly make themselves heard, or ­certain unwelcome images find a place to appear without warning.

In order to embark on this path, we must start by stripping the term ‘confusion’ of all its pejorative connotations, by welcoming it differently. Because this confusion, which I am also going to name ‘disor­ der’, is an attempt to name a set of ways of saying and making, seeing and feeling from a body that is ostensibly opposed to the modern legacies of reason, to the idea of a clear and informed mind, to the ­concise expression that would create a humanity that is worthy and capable of overcoming the dark­ ness of the world. In contrast to this modern body, which conceives of itself on the basis of a radical separation from what it is not – by distancing itself from the world surrounding it, by the imposition ­of its own narratives, and by the action of bio­ political policing at its physical borders – I would like to observe what this confusion, this disorder, establishes as a narrative for a different body, the product of the acute attention, the radical hospital­ ity that it must offer to the narratives of several worlds – human and non-human. A body thus receptive to the sometimes forced and violent intru­ sions that forge it into an authentic postcolonial ­subject on the threshold of madness. A body that then seizes the powers of delirium, welcoming ­hallucinations, in order to invent a new world while fleeing the toxic shores of reason towards a state of confusion as a future country, as a livable life.

By introducing the term ‘disorder’ here, I am aiming to express several aspects of this noisy ­intrusion that interests me. The first meaning of

this word takes us toward an entangled world that conveys new understandings of human relationships, both with each other and with non-human life. But the word ‘disorder’ also adds this idea of confusion that testifies to an emotional state whose origin and particular nature I will try to explain later on.

Finally, and this is where the term reaches its full appeal, disorder is also something that poses a prob­ lem (‘dis-order’). And it is this path that I wish to ­follow, in order to understand how a certain entan­ gled world produces muddled expressions which in turn engender bodies that pose a problem and some­ times ‘spoil the mood.’ This, a reversal of the cool concept of creolization, is instead perhaps a return to the racket of Édouard Glissant’s chaos-world, which now seems to have become the quiet and ­generally accepted music of the salons of thought.

The African American sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois introduced the idea of a double consciousness in his famous 1903 work The Souls of Black Folk to reflect the particular consciousness of the Black ­diasporas that emerged from transatlantic slavery.

An awareness of belonging to nation states and ­African worlds at the same time, African worlds that were themselves dispersed, distant, ghostly and sometimes ­forbidden by a set of radical incisions instigated by colonial modernity. It seems to me that over nearly one hundred and twenty years this ­double consciousness has become a multiple con­ sciousness, further intensifying the development of a digital era that places each person in a position of connection with multiple and distant realities, to the point of ­producing a psychological tension that is barely ­tolerable.

To return to the artists of the African and Afro-Caribbean diasporas, who constituted a large number of the people I met during this health crisis: I could sense the degree to which they were seized by a contradictory tension, that of having to resolve the break in the transmission of their history while having to respond to the increasingly urgent demand to present this same tattered history on the stages of Western art. For it must be said that these artists are gaining an increasing awareness of what is expected from them, an increasingly sophisticated knowledge of the aesthetic systems able to accom­ modate them, which they can make use of and which bring together their speech, their images, and their body. It is the result of a forced attention to the desires of masters that has been transformed into an agility of anticipation. This simulates rather than translates a situation of real equality and is first and foremost a way of knowing how to distance one­ self from the risk of death – doing what is expected of me in order to live longer, to protect myself. It is not yet a situation where it is possible to speak with words of one’s own. A situation that we suppose can only be established in noise, fury, and confusion.

In sum, in a disordered way. Such is the cacophony and the saturated image – composed of accumulated layers of visions – that signals emancipation. Such is the form of speech that follows a long silence and that affirms without agreeing.

The diasporic body is this space of accumulation caught between two worlds, and what it can more precisely express at present is this state of confusion, of superimposition, of din and disorder. For what has been kept silent cannot now appear serene. ­Stories, knowledges, and voices rise in this body,

choosing their path, taking it by surprise, inhabiting it and disturbing it ‘to the limits of reason’. It is because it is filled with this fury at having to speak of so many things at once, with this overflow that can­ not be poured out for the sole pleasure of a gaze that now demands it, that the diasporic body is ­sailing on the crest of exhaustion. And it will have to learn to survive, to find its breath, with an intense awareness of what must be done and said here, on the Western stage, while assuming the responsibility of welcom­ ing the living flow of those who could not speak before, over there, the flow of all the dead who have been denied their voice and cut off from any possibil­ ity of communicating with the living, who have been condemned to negative lives against themselves.

The political context of the global North is ­currently oscillating between calls for forced integra­ tion – a renewal of the rupture with ‘down there’ – and the exoticization of the self – a refusal of the ability to remain ‘here’ in a state of confusion. The aesthetic of disorder, however, testifies to an import­ ant transition of a section of humanity whose dynamic does not merge completely into an abstract creolization, for it is situated in specific bodies per­ vaded by haunting – or even peaceful – stories, and it conveys an interior chaos that takes sometimes monstrous forms.

What the diasporic body painfully synthesizes is thus the result of being prevented from speaking, from projecting outwards. It tells of the long with­ drawal of the ability to shape the world based on one’s own sensibilities and personal knowledge.

It loudly expresses the difficulty of living as a body doubly receptive to violent or desiring projections, Western discourses and forms of knowledge, and

the irresistible return of the unspoken stories for which it is chiefly responsible. It is this harrowing theater of confusion, this discordant echo chamber, the feverish storyteller of a disordered self.

As I listened to the testimonies of the people I met during this pandemic winter, in this strange, suspended world of screens, as I studied and dis­ cussed their work – visual, choreographic, textual, oral – I felt that it was necessary to invent new ways of welcoming these troubled bodies and these some­ times disordered words. And that it was not only necessary to want to be attentive to them, to help them to ‘elucidate their thoughts’, but rather to accept the monstrous country that they were point­ ing to on the horizon, a country for which we do not yet have words, and from which stories suddenly loom in return. We must now learn to listen to the racket that is shattering what was obstructing these stories, to welcome the disorder of that which is emancipating itself from the silence and calling us to join this adventure of the living.

Mit HANDS lanciert die Akademie der Künste der Welt mehr als eine Ausstellung: Es handelt sich um den Versuch, Taktili­ tät und Interaktion zurück ins öffentliche Leben zu bringen.

Kunst fungiert dabei als eine Art Inkubator, um soziale Wunden zu heilen und dem Gefühl der Isolation entgegenzuwirken. ­Händen als überdeterminierten Trägern von Arbeit kommt dabei eine besondere Rolle zu – so werden sie inmitten einer Pandemie als mögliche Kontaminationsquelle stigmatisiert, die unsere Vorstellung von Gemeinschaft bedroht.

Die Wahrnehmung von Händen hat sich 2020 mit dem Eintreten in die pandemische Phase grundlegend verändert, wenngleich die Bedeutung und Wertschätzung von Händen als Werkzeug und Helfer, als Versorger und Ernährer, als ­Signifikant und Geste – und somit auch der Wert von Hand­ arbeit und arbeitenden Händen – bereits mit der voran­ schreitenden Digitalisierung massiv infrage gestellt wurde.

Das mit der Eindämmung der Covid-19-Pandemie einher­ gehende wachsende Misstrauen in Hände könnte zum ­Sinnbild einer neuen Weltordnung werden, in der Körper gemäß ihres Risikopotenzials kategorisiert werden. Diese kollektive Verunsicherung gegenüber dem Taktilen könnte sich auf die allgemeine Wahrnehmung der Rolle kulturellen Handelns im sozialen Leben auswirken. Die Akzeptanz von Notstands­ regelungen und Austerität birgt die Gefahr, Kultur in den Bereich des Überflüssigen und Unwesentlichen zu verweisen.

Ein solches Szenario könnte eine soziale Depression zur Folge haben.

Hier muss Kunst intervenieren, um die Produktivität und Würde der Hände wiederherzustellen, aber auch, um neue Wege der taktilen und interaktiven öffentlichen Kultur zu ­imaginieren. Die Herausforderung für Künstler*innen besteht in diesem Moment darin, künstlerische Praxis nachhaltig zugänglich zu gestalten, Kunstwerke in den alltäglichen Reali­ täten zu verankern und ihr spielerisches und therapeutisches Potenzial auszuschöpfen.

HANDS umfasst die im Academyspace gezeigten Arbeiten von Cevdet Erek, Ali Eyal, Shilpa Gupta, Taus Makhacheva, Dhali Al Mamoon, Charlotte Posenenske, • • PROPAGANDA DEPARTMENT, Evariste Richer, Yazan Rousan, Antje Van Wichelen (mit Maxime Gids) und Ala Younis sowie die Ver­ vielfältigung und Verbreitung der Kunstwerke. Ausgehend von dem Dispositiv des partilha, einer Kultur und Öko­ nomie des Schenkens und Teilens, liegt der Fokus des Symposiums auf den Händen und ihrer Bezie­ hung zu Materialien und Gegen­ ständen. Dabei werden die Aspekte Arbeit, Heilung, Ästhetik, Medizin, Bewegung, Zeit, Gestus, Rhythmus und Nützlichkeit näher erforscht.

Ziel ist es, über handwerkliche Arbeit unter Berücksichtigung ver­ schiedener Produktions- und Ferti­ gungsweisen nachzudenken, wobei traditionelles Wissen im Mittel­ punkt stehen soll.

Dem Symposium gehen ein ­zweimonatiger Workshop (Times of Hands – and paws and leaves and wings and fins and) der Studieren­ den des NEP sowie ein Seminar (Urban Quilombo, Enchantment, Traditional Knowledge, Manual Labor and Other Economies) ­voraus, an denen alle beteiligten Akteur*in­ nen teilnehmen. Die in diesem Rah­ men entstandenen Archive und Sammlungen werden in verschiede­ nen Formaten präsentiert: Szenen, Objekte, Performances, wissen­ schaftliche und fi ­ ktionale Texte etc.

Lockdowns, Hygieneregeln und Social Distancing haben im Zuge der Covid-19-Pandemie eine Fülle von räumlichen Praktiken hervor­ gebracht, die das alltägliche Leben neu verhandeln. Während Home­ office, Online-Shopping, digitale Meetings, Remote-Services explizit räumlich sind und einen Teil der sozialen Aktivitäten und der Öko­ nomie des Dienstleistungssektors abfedern konnten, gibt es auch Praktiken verzweifelter Migratio­ nen, qualvoller Isolationen, plün­ dernden Unter­nehmer*innentums, emotionaler Zusammenbrüche sowie des Misstrauens gegenüber öffentlichen Räumen. Dies deutet auf eine räumlich-zeitliche Umstrukturierung hin, bei der die Unterscheidung zwischen privatem Umfeld und Arbeitsplatz zusam­ menbricht, nationale, zeitliche und geografische Beschränkungen wegfallen. Eine Umstrukturierung mit sozialen Konsequenzen.

Diese Krise ist ein Gradmesser für die Widerstandsfähigkeit eini­ ger der grundlegendsten Prinzipien menschlichen Denkens und stellt sowohl die Effektivität von Syste­ men als auch Konzepte wie Zeit, Raum, Öffentlichkeit infrage. Die langfristigen Auswirkungen auf unsere Vorstellungen von Zuhause, Arbeitsplatz, Bewegung und Ruhe gilt es zu erforschen.

Ziel ist es, Raumerfahrungen und Resilienzen, die in Zeiten der Pandemie entstanden sind, in einem Covid Glossary zu sammeln.

Dieses ist als langfristiges Projekt angelegt, das von Studierenden und Fakultätsmitgliedern der SEA sowie Wissenschaftler*innen aus anderen Ländern des

globalen Südens gemeinsam erar­ beitet wird. Geschichten von Unter­ nehmer*innengeist, Ausgrenzung, Verlust, Misstrauen, Verrat, Schwarzmarkthandel, Verwirrung, Organisation werden zusammen­ getragen. Das Glossar wird für das Symposium in eine Online-­ Ausstellung verwandelt.

Das Symposium lädt Raumak­ teur*innen und Wissenschaftler*in­ nen aus der ganzen Welt ein, um Spekulationen über die Entwicklun­ gen von Räumen und Infrastruktu­ ren nach der Pandemie anzustellen.

Eine der vielen Folgen der Digi­ talisierung ist die wachsende Prä­ senz und Bedeutung des Spiels.

Einerseits sehen wir es auf Handys und Laptops, als eine globale Pra­ xis, die Freizeit und Arbeit gleicher­ maßen bestimmt. Andererseits wird Gamification als Mittel zur Produktivitäts- und Effizienzsteige­ rung und als Werkzeug zum Lernen eingesetzt. Angesichts der Allgegen­wärtigkeit dieser Praxis stellt sich die Frage, ob Spiele und das damit v ­ erbundene Spielen nicht weniger eine Folge der Digita­ lisierung als vielmehr eine Voraus­ setzung für deren Erfolg sind: Ist es möglich, sich zeitgenössische digi­ tale F ­ elder – wirtschaftliche, sozi­ ale, kulturelle oder politische – ohne spielerische Attribute vorzustellen?

Ein erweiterter Begriff von digita­ ler Arbeit – jede Arbeit, die durch Digitalisierung produziert wird, ist digitale Arbeit – und eine neue

­ erspektive auf Spiele stecken den P Rahmen des Symposiums ab. Nai­ robi ist sowohl Inspirationsquelle als auch Fokus dieser Untersuchungen.

Als afrikanischer Tech-Hub, einge­ bettet in globale Finanz- und Wis­ sensnetzwerke und reich an idiosyn­ kratischen digitalen Praktiken, ist Nairobi ein Raum, der reich an Kom­ plexität und Widersprüchen ist.

Das Symposium untersucht Themen wie den globalen Einfluss und die lokalen Praktiken der Sili­ con-Valley-Rhetorik, die Präsenz chinesischer Tech-Ideologien im Süden und Norden, die Praxis des Offline-Filesharings in Nairobi, die Ent­stehung der transkontinentalen professionellen Spieleindustrie und die Explosion der Hailfor-Ride-Industrie in Ostafrika.

Eingeladen sind Studierende und Mitarbeiter*innen der KHM, Künst­ ler*innen, Autor*innen, Gamer*in­ nen und Programmierer*innen aus Nairobi und angrenzenden Stand­ orten. Bevorzugt handelt es sich dabei um aktive Akteur*innen aus diesen Bereichen, da der Fokus auf einer ­kontextspezifischen Reflexion der Praxis liegt.

Die Ausstellung HANDS ist der Ver­ such, taktile Empfindungen, Ver­ spieltheit und Interaktion zurück in das öffentliche Leben zu bringen – inmitten einer Pandemie, in der Berührungen und Hände per se als Kontaminationsquelle stigmatisiert werden.

Die Herausforderung für Künst­ ler*innen besteht in diesem Moment darin, künstlerische Praxis nachhaltig zugänglich zu gestalten, Kunstwerke in den alltäglichen Realitäten zu verankern und ihr spielerisches und therapeutisches Potenzial auszuschöpfen. Touch Again! Live with Art! Public Art! Let’s play! sind dabei die Parame­ ter, die die Spielregeln für die ­präsentierten Arbeiten definieren.

Touch Again! – das Objekt soll interaktiv sein, durch Berührung aktiviert werden. Live with Art! – das Objekt soll k ­ ostengünstig reproduzierbar und erschwinglich sein. Public Art! – das Objekt soll unter die Grundsätze der ­Commons f­ allen. Let’s play! – das Objekt soll verspielt und thera­ peutisch wirken.

Neun Künstler*innen – Cevdet Erek, Ali Eyal, Shilpa Gupta, Taus Makhacheva, Dhali Al Mamoon, • • PROPAGANDA DEPARTMENT, Evariste Richer, Yazan Rousan und Antje Van Wichelen mit Maxime Gids – sind eingeladen, jeweils ein Kunstwerk nach diesen Vorgaben herzustellen. Jedes dieser neun Exponate wird als Replikat, Minia­ tur oder Modifikation des Originals in Auflage produziert und unab­ hängig von Produktionskosten und Bekanntheitsgrad der Künstler*in­ nen zu einem einheitlichen, er­ schwinglichen Preis im Rahmen der Ausstellung verkauft. Ziel ist es, Kunst zu entmystifizieren, von ­Galerie- und Vermarktungsstrate­ gien loszulösen und von institutio­ nellen in private und öffent­liche Räume zu überführen.

Mit Charlotte Posenenske zollt die Ausstellung einer Künstlerin ­Tribut, die sich für zugängliche und interaktive Kunstpraktiken einsetzte und bereits 1967 Arbeiten schuf, die reproduzierbar und erschwing­ lich, kooperativ und taktil, unlimi­ tiert und unsigniert, nicht zuletzt verspielt und ephemer waren.

Neben dieser Hommage steht auch Ala Younis’ Videoinstallation Hands: dismemberance für die pro­ grammatische Ausrichtung der Ausstellung und kann als Manifest für das gesamte P ­ rojekt HANDS gelesen werden. Younis befasst sich darin mit den Zwängen, Defor­ mationen und der Zergliederung von Händen. Die Arbeit entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit der Lyrikerin Iman Mersal.

Ergänzend werden die Work­ shops Tactile Sensibility von Kerstin Schroedinger und A ­ natomy Atlas von Nicolás Paris stattfinden; die dabei von den Teilnehmer*in­ nen produzierten Objekte werden ebenfalls in der Ausstellung zu sehen sein.

WORKSHOP

Tactile Sensibility mit KERSTIN SCHROEDINGER

Ausgehend von Anni Albers’ Text Tactile Sensibility (1965) lädt der Workshop mit Kerstin ­Schroedinger die Teilnehmer*in­ nen dazu ein, sich in der Gruppe spielerisch der haptischen Wahr­ nehmung von Textilien und dem Erinnern an eben diese Empfindun­ gen zu widmen. Welche Erinne­ rung verbinden sich mit bestimm­ ten Stoffen, welche N ­ arrative, welche Familien­geschichten, Mythen, Fertigkeiten und Wissens­ formen sind daran geknüpft – die an der Nähmaschine sitzende Großmutter, das erste paar Jeans, Fertigkeiten und Techniken der Hand­arbeit, die über Generationen weitergegeben wurden?

Es geht um ein kollektives ­Er­leben dieser Erfahrungen und einen Austausch von Narrativen und Empfindungen und zugleich um die Frage, wie sich diese in Worte fassen lassen. Wie fühlt sich der Stoff hinsichtlich seiner

Beschaffenheit, seines Gewichts, seiner Farbigkeit an? Diese sprach­ lichen Äußerungen der taktilen Erfahrung w ­ erden gesammelt und miteinander geteilt; eine Samm­ lung an Begriffen, die die Vorstel­ lung und das Vokabular der Teil­ nehmer*innen erweitert. Es entsteht eine Art t­ aktile Sprache, ein taktiles, nicht-verschriftliches Vokabular.

Der Workshop findet abhängig von den aktuellen Corona-Regelun­ gen der Stadt Köln analog oder digital statt. Die Workshopteilneh­ mer*innen werden dazu eingela­ den, ein Stück Stoff oder einen tex­ tilen Gegenstand mitzubringen.

AUSSTELLUNGSRUNDGANG

HANDS mit MADHUSREE DUTTA, ALA YOUNIS

Die beiden Kuratorinnen ­Madhusree Dutta und Ala Younis laden zum Ausstellungsrundgang im A ­ cademyspace ein. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung HANDS stehen ­taktile Erfahrungen, Verspieltheit und Interaktivität. Doch in welche ­globalen gesellschaftlichen ­Entwicklungen ist dieses Konzept ­eingebettet?

Dahinter steht die Idee, dass Kunst soziale Wunden heilen und neue Formen des Zusammenlebens hervorbringen kann. Angesichts sozialer Isolation im privaten Raum und zugleich wachsenden Miss­ trauens gegenüber sozialer Inter­ aktion im öffentlichen Raum greift Kunst therapeutisch ein und unter­ streicht die Relevanz und Unver­ zichtbarkeit kulturellen Lebens.

Die Künstler*innen der Ausstel­ lung haben Objekte gestaltet, die Taktilität erfahrbar machen (Touch Again!), reproduzierbar und somit zugänglicher sind (Live with Art!), die unter die Commons fallen

(Public Art!) und zum Spielen anre­ gen (Let’s play!).

Der Ausstellungsrundgang b ­ ietet die Möglichkeit, direkt Fragen an die Kuratorinnen zu stellen, Zusam­ menhänge gemeinsam zu diskutie­ ren und nicht zuletzt vor Ort die ausgestellten Kunstwerke spiele­ risch zu erkunden.

Hands: dismemberance mit MADHUSREE DUTTA, IMAN MERSAL, ALA YOUNIS

Madhusree Dutta, Kuratorin und künstlerische Leitung der ADKDW, spricht mit Ala Younis, Ko-Kuratorin und Künstlerin der Ausstellung HANDS, und der D ­ ichterin Iman Mersal über deren gemeinsam ­entwickelte Videoinstallation Hands: dismemberance. Die Arbeit dient dem gesamten Ausstellungs­ projekt als Manifest; eine Art Video­ essay, der sich mit Deformationen und Zergliederung von Händen beschäftigt.

Im Gespräch werden u.a. die programmatische Ausrichtung und die dafür entwickelten Parameter – Touch Again! Live with Art! Public Art! Let’s play! – näher beleuchtet.

Ist es nicht paradox, dass die kultu­ relle Natur von Händen, die sich durch vielfältige Gebrauchsweisen und Bedeutungen auszeichnet, in der jetzigen Pandemie Gefahr läuft, zu verkümmern und margina­ lisiert zu werden? Es stellt sich die Frage nach der therapeutischen Dimension: Welche Rolle nehmen Künstler*innen angesichts einer sich anbahnenden sozialen Depres­ sion ein?

With HANDS, Academy of the Arts of the World launches more than an exhibition: it is an effort to bring tactility and interaction back to public life. Here art functions as a kind of incubator, ­healing social wounds and counteracting the feeling of isolation.

Hands as overdetermined instruments of work take on a special role – as they are stigmatized in the midst of a pandemic as a pos­ sible source of contamination, threatening our concept of commu­ nity. Since the arrival of the pandemic in 2020, our perception of hands has fundamentally changed; though with advancing digitali­ zation, the significance of and appreciation for hands have already massively come into question – hands as tools and helpers, ­caregivers and providers, as signifier and gesture, these concepts are being challenged, and the value of handiwork and working hands is as well.

The growing mistrust in hands that has resulted from the mea­ sures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic could be the symbol of a new global system, a system in which bodies are categorized according to potential risk. This collective uncertainty around the tactile could affect our general perception of the way cultural activity functions in social life. The acceptance of emergency ­regulations and austerity carries the danger of relegating culture to the domain of redundancy and irrelevancy. Such a scenario could result in a social depression.

This is where art must intervene, to restore the productivity and dignity of hands but also to imagine new pathways for tactile and interactive public culture. The challenge for artists in this moment is to create sustainably accessible artistic practices, to anchor ­artworks in everyday realities and to fully utilize their playful and therapeutic potential.

Based on the device of partilha, a culture and economy of giving and sharing, the symposium places the focus on hands and their relationship to materials and objects. Various aspects of work, healing, aesthetics, medicine, movement, time, gesture, rhythm and utility will be explored in greater detail. The aim is to think about manual work, taking into account various methods of produc­ tion and creation, with a particular emphasis on traditional knowledge.

The symposium is preceded by a two-month-long workshop (Times of Hands – and paws and leaves and wings and fins and) with the stu­ dents of the NEP as well as a semi­ nar (Urban Quilombo, Enchantment, Traditional Knowledge, Manual Labor and Other Economies) in which all contributors take part. The archives and collections that result will be presented in various formats: scenes, objects, academic texts, fictional texts, performances, etc.

Lockdowns, health measures and social distancing have given rise to a plethora of spatial practices that negotiate everyday life anew. While

working from home, online shop­ ping, digital meetings and remote services are explicitly spatial and can compensate for a share of social activities and the economy of the service industry, there are also practices of desperate migrations, agonizing isolation, the plundering of entrepreneurship, emotional breakdowns as well as mistrust toward public space. This points to a spatial-temporal restructuring in which the differentiation between private sphere and workplace breaks apart, and national, tempo­ ral and geographical limitations fall out of relevance. It is a restructuring that brings social consequences.

This crisis is an indicator of the resilience of some of the most ­fundamental principles of human thought and puts into question the effectiveness of systems as well as concepts like time, space and the public sphere. The long-term effects on our ideas of home, work­ place, movement and rest are to be explored.

The aim is to collect spatial experiences and resiliencies that have arisen during the pandemic in a Covid Glossary. This is planned as a long-term project that will be col­ laboratively developed by students and faculty at the SEA as well as academics from other countries in the Global South. Stories of entre­ preneurial spirit, marginalization, loss, mistrust, betrayal, black mar­ ket trade, confusion, organization, etc. will be compiled. The glossary will be transformed into an online exhibition for the symposium.

The symposium invites academ­ ics and people working with spati­ ality from around the world to speculate on the post-pandemic development of spaces and infra­ structure.

Times of Hands – ­Gamification vs Play

One of the many effects of digitali­ zation is the growing presence and significance of games. On the one hand we see them on mobile phones and laptops, as recreational activities and as a career, as a global practice. On the other hand gamification is used as a means of increasing productivity and effi­ ciency and as a tool for learning.

Considering how ubiquitous it is as a practice, it raises the question of whether games and gaming are not less a consequence of digitali­ zation as they are much more a precondition for its success: is it ­possible to imagine contemporary digital fields – whether economic, social, cultural, or political – with­ out playful, game-like features?

Defining the framework of the symposium are a broadened con­ cept of digital work – i.e. every work that is produced through digi­ talization is digital work – and a new perspective on games. Nairobi is both a source of inspiration and the focus of these investigations.

As an African tech hub, embedded in global finance and knowledge networks and rich in idiosyncratic digital practices, Nairobi is a space with complexity and contradictions in abundance.

The symposium examines themes like the global influence and local practices of Silicon Valley rhetoric, the presence of Chinese tech ideologies in the South and the North, the practice of offline file sharing in Nairobi, the emer­ gence of the transcontinental pro­ fessional gaming industry and the explosion of the ride-hailing indus­ try in East Africa.

Invited are students and employ­ ees of the KHM, artists, writers,

gamers and programmers from Nairobi and neighboring areas.

Involving active contributors from these fields is preferred, as there is a focus on a contextspecific reflection of the practice.

The exhibition HANDS is an effort to bring tactile sensations, play­ fulness and interaction back to public life – in the midst of a pan­ demic in which touch and hands are in and of themselves stigma­ tized as sources of contamination.

The challenge for artists in this moment is to create sustainably accessible artistic practices, to anchor artworks in everyday reali­ ties and to fully utilize their playful and therapeutic potential. Touch Again! Live with Art! Public Art! Let’s Play! represent the parame­ ters that define the rules of play for these artworks.

The artists in the exhibition have created objects that are tactile (Touch Again!), reproducible and thus more accessible (Live with Art!), that fall under the principle of the commons (Public Art!) and that inspire playfulness (Let’s Play!).

Nine artists – Cevdet Erek, Ali Eyal, Shilpa Gupta, Taus Makhacheva, Dhali Al Mamoon, • • ­PROPAGANDA DEPARTMENT, Evariste Richer, Yazan Rousan and Antje Van Wichelen with Maxime Gids – are invited to each create an artwork according to these specifi­ cations. As part of the exhibition,

each of these nine pieces will be produced in a limited edition, as replicas, miniatures, or modifica­ tions of the originals, and sold for a standard affordable price, inde­ pendent of production costs and name recognition of the artist.

The goal is to demystify art, to detach it from gallery and market­ ing strategies and to transfer it from institutional spaces to private and public ones.

With Charlotte Posenenske, the exhibition pays tribute to an artist who espoused accessible and inter­ active art practices and who was creating works as early as 1967 that were reproducible and affordable, collaborative and tactile, unlimited and unsigned, not to mention play­ ful and ephemeral.

Alongside this homage, Ala Younis’s video installation Hands: dismemberance also stands for the programmatic focus of the exhibi­ tion and can be read as a manifesto for the whole project HANDS. In this work Younis addresses the ­constraints, deformations and the ­dismemberment of hands. The art­ work was created in collaboration with poet Iman Mersal.

In addition, there will be the workshops Tactile Sensibility with Kerstin Schroedinger and Anatomy Atlas with Nicolás Paris; the objects produced by participants in the workshops will also be seen in the exhibition.

WORKSHOP

Tactile Sensibility with KERSTIN SCHROEDINGER

Using Anni Albers’s text Tactile ­Sensibility (1965) as a starting point, this workshop with Kerstin Schroedinger invites participants to playfully engage as a group with the haptic perception of textiles and with memory in relation to

these very sensations. Which mem­ ories connect with specific fabrics, which narratives, which family ­stories, myths, skills and knowl­ edge are tied to these materials – grandma sitting at the sewing machine, the first pair of jeans, crafting skills and techniques that have been passed down over ­generations?

It’s about a collective sharing of these experiences and an exchange of narratives and memo­ ries, and, at the same time, it’s about the question of how to put these things into words. How does a fabric feel in terms of its quality, its weight, its coloring, etc.? These verbal expressions of tactile expe­ rience will be collected and shared with one another; a collection of terms that expands the imagina­ tion and vocabulary of the partici­ pants. A kind of tactile language will be created – a tactile, unwrit­ ten lexicon.

The workshop will take place either in person or online, depend­ ing on the current coronavirus ­regulations of the city of Cologne.

The workshop participants are ­invited to bring a piece of cloth or a textile item with them.

EXHIBITION TOUR

HANDS with MADHUSREE DUTTA, ALA YOUNIS

The two curators Madhusree Dutta and Ala Younis offer an invitation to a gallery walk in the Academy­ space. At the center of the exhibi­ tion HANDS are tactile experiences, playfulness and interactivity. But in which global social developments are these concepts embedded?

The core idea is that art heals social wounds and can bring forth new forms of coexistence. In the face of social isolation in private space, alongside a growing mistrust

towards social interaction in public space, art is a therapeutic inter­ vention and underscores the rele­ vance and necessity of cultural life.

The gallery walk affords a chance to ask the curators ques­ tions directly, to engage in discus­ sion, not to mention the oppor­ tunity to playfully explore the exhibited artworks on site.

Madhusree Dutta, curator and artistic director of the ADKDW, speaks with Ala Younis, artist and co-curator of the exhibition HANDS, and the poet Iman Mersal about their collaboratively devel­ oped video installation Hands: ­dismemberance. The work serves as a manifesto for the whole exhibi­ tion project; a kind of video essay that deals with deformations and the dismemberment of hands.

Their conversation will examine in detail the programmatic focus and parameters of the exhibition – Touch Again! Live with Art! Public Art! Let’s Play! Is it not paradoxical that the cultural nature of hands, characterized by a diversity of practices and meanings, is at risk of atrophy and being marginalized due to the current pandemic?

This raises the issue of a therapeu­ tic dimension: what role do artists occupy in light of an imminent social depression?
